• Did You Know Facebook Has Built-In Shortcut Keys?

  I was spending some time browsing around Facebook today (translation: wasting time), when I noticed that they have some shortcut keys for navigating around the site using the keyboard, so I put together a list for everybody. Note: for each of these shortcut keys, if you’re using Firefox, you’ll need to use Shift+Alt instead of just Alt, and for Internet Explorer you’ll need to hit the Enter key after the shortcut to trigger it. • A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • Is it a bad practice to include all the enums in one file and use it in multiple classes?

  I'm an aspiring game developer, I work on occasional indie games, and for a while I've been doing something which seemed like a bad practice at first, but I really want to get an answer from some experienced programmers here. Let's say I have a file called enumList.h where I declare all the enums I want to use in my game: // enumList.h enum materials_t { WOOD, STONE, ETC }; enum entity_t { PLAYER, MONSTER }; enum map_t { 2D, 3D }; // and so on. // Tile.h #include "enumList.h" #include <vector> class tile { // stuff }; The main idea is that I declare all enums in the game in 1 file, and then import that file when I need to use a certain enum from it, rather than declaring it in the file where I need to use it. I do this because it makes things clean, I can access every enum in 1 place rather than having pages openned solely for accessing one enum. Is this a bad practice and can it affect performance in any way?

• Hurricane Season 2010 Starts

  Here we are at the start of another hurricane season.  As with past years, I have been preparing.  Last year I had the house painted with a high-quality paint, giving the stucco its best waterproofing possible.  I have a few cracks to patch with elastomeric patching material.  I will paint it to match the house later.  I also need to clean out the anchors for the lower angle brackets and reattach them.  I had removed the brackets for painting. You can read all my past hurricane entries here.  The predictors are promising a busy season.  We have heard that one before, so I put little credence in long range press releases.  Other than that we are pretty much ready.  I have a few new plans I will blog about later, but for now we get to listen to our daily thunderstorms outside.

  I have a problem in UbuntuGNOME 13.10 which I didn't had in prior releases: I did a clean install and I don't know if it was already there or if I may have changed something, but my "Control L" and "Caps Lock" keys are swapped. How to swap them back? • Hidden text and links appearing just on click for SEO?

  I am working on a site that has neat clean/minimalistic design/layout. Menu items are "hidden" behind an icon, to see them, users need to click on that icon to get a javascript toggled overlay with the list of menu items. Then there are blocks with photos and users need to click on a small icon/button on each of them to get a block of text shown for each of the photo. While I don't like such "design" myself, making me click lots of time just to read, I also think that for SEO purpose this model is really wrong. Is such model bad for SEO? Are there ways to keep design like this but have "safe" methods of displaying text content on click that will not hurt SEO?

• Paren-free PHP? [on hold]

  I stumbled upon the idea for paren-free ecmascript (https://brendaneich.com/2010/11/paren-free/), which is inspired by Go language. And it's simple, clean and cool - if you make braces required instead of recommended (and they are recommended everywhere anyway: http://www.php-fig.org/psr/psr-2/), then parenthesis are unneeded around control structure “heads”. It would work exactly the same in PHP. So, a piece of PHP code could look like this: if $someVar == 42 { doSomething(); } or: foreach $someArray as $key => $value { echo "$key: $value"; } It's a small, but nice step towards a nicer, cleaner syntax and removing unnecessary parts. The question is - would PHP community be willing to see the languange move in that direction? Would it be considered an improvement by majority, or are we too used to typing those parenthesis and unwilling to see any change in PHP syntax?

• How to fix LibreOffice 3.5 to start from launcher icon?

  Recently I installed LibreOffice 3.5 from debs (including the ones for desktop integration. Since then it behaves in a weird manner. Basically it won't launch from launcher shortcuts. Example: dash libreoffice launched (launcher shows with 2 seconds delay) 'keep in launcher' LO closed the LO icon on the launcher clicked pulsating for 5 seconds, then stops LO didn't launch I didn't look for open processes or anything and... dash libreoffice launched immediately without problems It also didn't remember recently opened items, but now it got fixed somehow. Other symptoms: - icon on the launcher and all menu categories appear with a delay of few seconds - two writer icons appear on the launcher What I did: used 3.4.5, uninstalled, installed 3.5 RC3, problems started to occur uninstalled RC3 'clean' per http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_LibreOffice_on_Linux#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu_3 installed 3.5 stable which is identical to RC3 still same issues I don't know if it is related but I use Unity test PPA:vanvugt/unity which I needed to solve the stuttering windows bug. Any ideas?

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.   Something has been gnawing at me for a while now and I can't seem to find a relevant answer either in man pages or using your 'Don't be evil' search engine. My .bashrc has the following: shopt -s histappend HISTSIZE=100 HISTFILESIZE=0 # 200 previous value Putting HISTFILESIZE to 0 allows me to start with a clean history slate with each new term window. I find it practical in conjunction with using a prompt that contains \#, because when visualizing a previous command before recalling it with !n or !-p, one can just do: $ history | more to see its relevant "n" value In my case, usually the result of: $ \history | tail -1 | awk '{print $1}' # (I know this is an overkill, don't flame me) equals the expanded value of # in PS1 minus 1, which is how I like it to be at all times. But then, sometimes not. At times the expanded value of # sort of "runs away". It's incremented in such a a manner that it becomes than $(( $(\history | tail -1 | awk '{print $1}')+1 )) Any pointers, anyone?

• How do I run update-grub from a LiveCD?

  Okay, so I did something stupid. I was trying to clean up my Grub entries, and accidentally removed all of my Linux kernels from Grub (they're still on the hard drive). So now, obviously, Grub doesn't give me any way to boot into Ubuntu; I can boot into Windows just fine, but Ubuntu isn't even listed. So I just want to run "sudo upgrade-grub" somehow to restore Ubuntu to the list. I can boot from a LiveCD, but once there how do I run that command? (My Ubuntu installation is on sda5, by the way.)

• /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with error after partitioning

  I just wanted to create a separate home partition on my Ubuntu 12.10 system. I booted the liveDVD, resized the sda2 partition (28gb of data resized to 30gb based on MiB [originally on a 100gb partition]) and made a new ext4 partition for the home folder. The drive is an SSD drive. I had changed the settings (noatime etc.) for SSD succesfully a week ago. On reboot I get the following error: /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with errors Inode 74669 has an invalid extent node (blk 6881289) fsd / [953] terminated with status 4 What would you suggest me to do? If I can avoid a clean install that would save me a lot of time (I had just done all the config). I was following this HOWTO, but I did not get to changing any of the files or configs other than those with gparted. I have a (two-week old) SSD Samsung drive which is functioning just fine (other specs see bottom of this question). Other specs: 64bit 12.10, i7, 8gb ram, nvidia.

• Collision: Vector class (java)

  When handling collision detection / response and you need a Vector class, do you need to create that class yourself or is there a java class you can use? A vector class should have methods like: subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... At the moment it seems logical to use classes like java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? My question is not about how to implement collision detection, I know how that works. • Upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 to 11.10

  Our project definition is to develop CUDA programs. Our workstation has CUDA 3.1 installed in Ubuntu 9.10. We need to program in CUDA 5.0 which can be installed only on ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04. We tried upgrading but were faced with many problems as 9.10 is no longer supported. So we chose to proceed with a clean installation. Since we have a shared workstation, we need to back up the settings. We decided to use clonezilla for cloning the system. Booting from the LiveCD showed an unexpected error. Another option was to install 11.10 in an external HDD by partitioning it, but Gparted could not be installed and terminated with the error "installArchives() failed" which we couldn't solve even after modifying the sources.list. We are stuck either ways. Have no idea how to proceed and we have a deadline to submit our CUDA program. Any suggestion is welcome.

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build.   There is this data structure that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate over it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the value is treated as "clean". This has come up in this answer on Stack Overflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.

This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

• usb keyboard works except in terminal window (SOLVED)

  I just installed 12.10 (clean install and updates). USB keyboard and mouse work fine EXCEPT the keyboard does not work in a terminal window (USB mouse is working in terminal). keyboard is Logitech MK320 and associated mouse. I'm typing in a mozilla window on the keyboard at this very moment and when I switch to the terminal window, nothing can be typed. Any ideas? I use terminal mode alot. Thanks matrixunloaded I didn't realize passwords do not show even an asterisk in terminal mode! I'd just installed 12.10 and was pasting a long sudo command and then typing my password (which looked like nothing appearing)
