• Ubuntu 12.04 using UEFI

  I want to upgrade my machine with a new Motherboard, RAM and Processor. I am planning on doing a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. The Motherboard I want to use is an Asrock 970 Extreme4 which uses an AMI 32 MBit UEFI BIOS. My Question is, is there anything I have to watch out for during the installation process? Cause I have read that some people have trouble booting into ubuntu using a UEFI BIOS. Any advice? I don't want to spend all that money for the different parts only to find out that I can only use windows properly. Thanks in advance

• Customizing Texmaker

  I use LaTeX a lot but I find quite obnoxious all the crappy files it leaves behind when you compile: .aux, .log... Fortunately TeXMaker has the option "clean" that deletes all of these. However, I don't like having to remember to click on it every time I'm going to close a document, ie I'd like a button that both closes a document and cleans all that stuff. Any hint as how to do it? I suppose if I knew how to access the program code I'd be able to do it as I'd just have to put together two options that already exist. Thanks

• How to fix LibreOffice 3.5 to start from launcher icon?

  Recently I installed LibreOffice 3.5 from debs (including the ones for desktop integration. Since then it behaves in a weird manner. Basically it won't launch from launcher shortcuts. Example: dash libreoffice launched (launcher shows with 2 seconds delay) 'keep in launcher' LO closed the LO icon on the launcher clicked pulsating for 5 seconds, then stops LO didn't launch I didn't look for open processes or anything and... dash libreoffice launched immediately without problems It also didn't remember recently opened items, but now it got fixed somehow. Other symptoms: - icon on the launcher and all menu categories appear with a delay of few seconds - two writer icons appear on the launcher What I did: used 3.4.5, uninstalled, installed 3.5 RC3, problems started to occur uninstalled RC3 'clean' per http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_LibreOffice_on_Linux#Debian_.2F_Ubuntu_3 installed 3.5 stable which is identical to RC3 still same issues I don't know if it is related but I use Unity test PPA:vanvugt/unity which I needed to solve the stuttering windows bug. Any ideas?

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • Hidden text and links appearing just on click for SEO?

  I am working on a site that has neat clean/minimalistic design/layout. Menu items are "hidden" behind an icon, to see them, users need to click on that icon to get a javascript toggled overlay with the list of menu items. Then there are blocks with photos and users need to click on a small icon/button on each of them to get a block of text shown for each of the photo. While I don't like such "design" myself, making me click lots of time just to read, I also think that for SEO purpose this model is really wrong. Is such model bad for SEO? Are there ways to keep design like this but have "safe" methods of displaying text content on click that will not hurt SEO?

  I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. But: Reading state information... Done usb-modeswitch-data is already the newest version. So, my question is: what actions should I take in order to obtain a clean and fresh installation of Lubuntu? And also, how do I safely remove all the kubuntu-desktop-related stuff?

  I have a problem in UbuntuGNOME 13.10 which I didn't had in prior releases: I did a clean install and I don't know if it was already there or if I may have changed something, but my "Control L" and "Caps Lock" keys are swapped. How to swap them back?   Something has been gnawing at me for a while now and I can't seem to find a relevant answer either in man pages or using your 'Don't be evil' search engine. My .bashrc has the following: shopt -s histappend HISTSIZE=100 HISTFILESIZE=0 # 200 previous value Putting HISTFILESIZE to 0 allows me to start with a clean history slate with each new term window. I find it practical in conjunction with using a prompt that contains \#, because when visualizing a previous command before recalling it with !n or !-p, one can just do: $ history | more to see its relevant "n" value In my case, usually the result of: $ \history | tail -1 | awk '{print $1}' # (I know this is an overkill, don't flame me) equals the expanded value of # in PS1 minus 1, which is how I like it to be at all times. But then, sometimes not. At times the expanded value of # sort of "runs away". It's incremented in such a a manner that it becomes than $(( $(\history | tail -1 | awk '{print $1}')+1 )) Any pointers, anyone?

• Hurricane Season 2010 Starts

  Here we are at the start of another hurricane season.  As with past years, I have been preparing.  Last year I had the house painted with a high-quality paint, giving the stucco its best waterproofing possible.  I have a few cracks to patch with elastomeric patching material.  I will paint it to match the house later.  I also need to clean out the anchors for the lower angle brackets and reattach them.  I had removed the brackets for painting. You can read all my past hurricane entries here.  The predictors are promising a busy season.  We have heard that one before, so I put little credence in long range press releases.  Other than that we are pretty much ready.  I have a few new plans I will blog about later, but for now we get to listen to our daily thunderstorms outside.

• Paren-free PHP? [on hold]

  I stumbled upon the idea for paren-free ecmascript (https://brendaneich.com/2010/11/paren-free/), which is inspired by Go language. And it's simple, clean and cool - if you make braces required instead of recommended (and they are recommended everywhere anyway: http://www.php-fig.org/psr/psr-2/), then parenthesis are unneeded around control structure “heads”. It would work exactly the same in PHP. So, a piece of PHP code could look like this: if $someVar == 42 { doSomething(); } or: foreach $someArray as $key => $value { echo "$key: $value"; } It's a small, but nice step towards a nicer, cleaner syntax and removing unnecessary parts. The question is - would PHP community be willing to see the languange move in that direction? Would it be considered an improvement by majority, or are we too used to typing those parenthesis and unwilling to see any change in PHP syntax?

  Okay, so I did something stupid. I was trying to clean up my Grub entries, and accidentally removed all of my Linux kernels from Grub (they're still on the hard drive). So now, obviously, Grub doesn't give me any way to boot into Ubuntu; I can boot into Windows just fine, but Ubuntu isn't even listed. So I just want to run "sudo upgrade-grub" somehow to restore Ubuntu to the list. I can boot from a LiveCD, but once there how do I run that command? (My Ubuntu installation is on sda5, by the way.)

• /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with error after partitioning

  I just wanted to create a separate home partition on my Ubuntu 12.10 system. I booted the liveDVD, resized the sda2 partition (28gb of data resized to 30gb based on MiB [originally on a 100gb partition]) and made a new ext4 partition for the home folder. The drive is an SSD drive. I had changed the settings (noatime etc.) for SSD succesfully a week ago. On reboot I get the following error: /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with errors Inode 74669 has an invalid extent node (blk 6881289) fsd / [953] terminated with status 4 What would you suggest me to do? If I can avoid a clean install that would save me a lot of time (I had just done all the config). I was following this HOWTO, but I did not get to changing any of the files or configs other than those with gparted. I have a (two-week old) SSD Samsung drive which is functioning just fine (other specs see bottom of this question). Other specs: 64bit 12.10, i7, 8gb ram, nvidia.

  When handling collision detection / response and you need a Vector class, do you need to create that class yourself or is there a java class you can use? A vector class should have methods like: subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... At the moment it seems logical to use classes like java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? My question is not about how to implement collision detection, I know how that works. However I'm wondering what would be a correct and clean way to implement it in java since I'm fairly new to the language and to application development in general.

  There is this data structure that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate over it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the value is treated as "clean". This has come up in this answer on Stack Overflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.

• ClearTrace Supports SQL Server 2008 R2

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build. • usb keyboard works except in terminal window (SOLVED)

  I just installed 12.10 (clean install and updates). USB keyboard and mouse work fine EXCEPT the keyboard does not work in a terminal window (USB mouse is working in terminal). keyboard is Logitech MK320 and associated mouse. I'm typing in a mozilla window on the keyboard at this very moment and when I switch to the terminal window, nothing can be typed. Any ideas? I use terminal mode alot. Thanks matrixunloaded I didn't realize passwords do not show even an asterisk in terminal mode! I'd just installed 12.10 and was pasting a long sudo command and then typing my password (which looked like nothing appearing)

• How to batch remove spamming users and pages they created on MediaWiki?

  I'm trying to clean up a MediaWiki instance which has been subjected to spamming and vandalism for a period of time. The current status is that there are a large number of users which only created spam pages but typically not altered legitimate pages. And there is only < 10 users which I know are legitimate users and created a small number of legitimate pages. Abstractly, my idea of fixing the messy situation is to find the complete list of users that are not in that small set of legitimate users, and use RenameUser extension to rename them all to a Spammer user, and use Nuke extension to mass delete all pages it created. Any practical advice on how to proceed? Since there are hundreds of spammer users, how do I effectively rename them? It seems Renameuser extension does not support automated batch renaming of users by allowing users to be renamed with a list or file.

  Since github using webfront for icons, every time I open github website that tab will crash. But other websites are not crash. I did everything I can, like disable all extensions, clean all cache, even create a new user profile, still not working. I'm using Ubuntu linux 12.04, last stable google chrome browser, always up to date. I searched from google and not found any one has the issue like mine. And I found any website using Font-Awesome my chrome tab will crash if I open that website.
