How is this paradigm/style called?

I have the following situation: I'm developing an add-in for a UML modeling tool. The models that can be created by the user are stored inside the main application and a limited access to the models is given through its API. However, the add-in has a lot of callbacks for events that are triggered by the main application, when changes to the model occur by the user. Since the models are already stored once in the main application, I considered it not practicable to duplicate the models in the add-in, which leads to the fact that I have only behavior in the add-in, rather than having a state. This behavior is mainly expressed by static functions, that are organized in functional cohesive classes. The callbacks for the events have always references to the model elements relevant for the specifc event that ocurred. First, it seemed to me that this is a procedural style in general, but procedural style doesn't consider events/callbacks, so this boils down to the question. How is this programming style called?

Do games use threads?

I understand that the concept of how a game runs i.e while (game_loop = true) { //handle events // input/output/sound etc } But it has come to my attention while programming in another HLL is do some games use threads for certain operations? For example take any Pokemon game ; during interaction a textbox appears to display information. Now I've been trying to simulate that sort of textbox and the only way I could have got it to be exactly the same is by using a loop and yes once a loop is started there is no way to handle window events unless they are handled again inside the loop itself. I couldn't have used this loop inside a different thread other than the main one (due to a DirectX limitation) so the only option was to use it inside the main program thread. I was wondering if some games work like this ; do they only use the main program thread and handle events again if they're inside a loop? Infinite loop in regex in java

Hello, My purpose is to match this kind of different urls: url.com my.url.com my.extended.url.com a.super.extended.url.com and so on... So, I decided to build the regex to have a letter or a number at start and end of the url, and to have a infinite number of "subdomains" with alphanumeric characters and a dot. For example, in "my.extended.url.com", "m" from "my" is the first class of the regex, "m" from "com" is the last class of the regex, and "y.", "extended." and "url." are the second class of the regex. Using the pattern and subject in the code below, I want the find method to return me a false because this url must not match, but it uses 100% of CPU and seems to stay in an infinite loop. Installing Lubuntu 14.04.1 forcepae fails

I tried to install Lubuntu 14.04.1 from a CD. First, I chose Try Lubuntu without installing which gave: ERROR: PAE is disabled on this Pentium M (PAE can potentially be enabled with kernel parameter "forcepae" ... Following the description on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE, I used forcepae and tried Try Lubuntu without installing again. That worked fine. dmesg | grep -i pae showed: [ 0.000000] Kernel command line: file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- forcepae [ 0.008118] PAE forced! On the live-CD session, I tried installing Lubuntu double clicking on the install button on the desktop. Here, the CD starts running but then stops running and nothing happens. Next, I rebooted and tried installing Lubuntu directly from the boot menu screen using forcepae again. After a while, I receive the following error message: The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again. Hitting Enter brings me to the desktop. For what errors should I search? And how? Finally, I rebooted once more and tried Check disc for defects with forcepae option; no errors have been found. Now, I am wondering how to find the error or whether it would be better to follow advice c in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE: "Move the hard disk to a computer on which the processor has PAE capability and PAE flag (that is, almost everything else than a Banias). Install the system as usual but don't add restricted drivers. After the install move the disk back." Thanks for some hints! LightDM will not start after stopping it

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and in trying to install the nvidia CUDA developer drivers I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F5) and stopped lightdm (installation required that no X server instance be running) through sudo service lightdm stop. Re-starting lightdm with sudo service lightdm start did not work: A couple of * Starting [...] lines where displayed, but the process hanged. (I do not remember at which point, but I think it was * Starting System V runlevel compatibility. I manually rebooted my laptop, and ever since booting seems to hang, usually around the * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK] log line (not consistently at that point, though). From that point on, I seem to be able to interact with my system only through a tty session (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I've tried purging and reinstalling both lightdm and gdm, as well as selecting both as the default display managers (through sudo dpkg-reconfigure [lightdm / gdm] or by manually editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager) through both apt-get and aptitude (that shouldn't make a difference anyway) after updating the packages, but the problem persists. Some of the responses I'm getting are the following: After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (but not ... gdm) I get the following message: dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_NAME missing dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing After trying sudo service lightdm start or sudo start lightdm I get to see the boot loading screen again but nothing changes. If I go back to the tty shell I see lightdm start/running, process <num> but ps -e | grep lightdm gives no output. After trying sudo service gdm start or sudo starg gdm I get the gdm start/running, process <num> message, and gdm-binary is supposedly an active process, but all that happens is that the screen blinks a couple of times and nothing else. Other candidate solutions that I'd found on the web included running startx but when I try that I get an error output [...] Fatal server error: no screens found [...]. Moreover, I made sure that lightdm-gtk-greeter is installed but that did not help either. Please excuse my not including complete outputs/logs; I am writing this post from another computer and it's hard to manually copy the complete logs. Also, I've seen several posts that had to do with similar problems, but either there was no fix, or the one suggested did not work for me. In closing: Please help! I very much hope to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch! :) Alex @mosi I did not manage to fix the NVIDIA kernel driver as per your instructions. OIM 11g notification framework

OIM 11g has introduced an improved and template based Notifications framework. New release has removed the limitation of sending text based emails (out-of-the-box emails) and enhanced to support html features. New release provides in-built out-of-the-box templates for events like 'Reset Password', 'Create User Self Service' , ‘User Deleted' etc. Also provides new APIs to support custom templates to send notifications out of OIM. OIM notification framework supports notification mechanism based on events, notification templates and template resolver. They are defined as follows: Ø Events are defined as XML file and imported as part of MDS database in order to make notification event available for use. Ø Notification templates are created using OIM advance administration console. The template contains the text and the substitution 'variables' which will be replaced with the data provided by the template resolver. Templates support internationalization and can be defined as HTML or in form of simple text. Ø Template resolver is a Java class that is responsible to provide attributes and data to be used at runtime and design time. It must be deployed following the OIM plug-in framework. Resolver data provided at design time is to be used by end user to design notification template with available entity variables and it also provides data at runtime to replace the designed variable with value to be displayed to recipients. It defines what parameters are available in the notification creation screen and how those parameters are replaced when the notification is to be sent. Resolver class resolves the data dynamically at run time and displays the attributes in the UI. 8. The Param DataType element lists a set of parameters which allow user to add parameters that are data dependent. An example of the data dependent or a dynamic entity is a resource object which user can select at run time. A notification template is to be configured for the resource object. Corresponding to the resource object field, a lookup is displayed on the UI. When a user selects the event the call goes to the Resolver class provided to fetch the fields that are displayed in the Available Data list, from which user can select the attribute to be used on the template. Param tag is child tag to declare the entity and its data type with unique reference name. 9. Resolver closing tag 10 EventType closing tag 11. Events closing tag Note: - DataType needs to be declared as “X2-Entity” for User entity and “91-Entity” for Resource or Organization entities. The dynamic entities supported for lookup are user, resource, and organization. Once notification event metadata is defined, need to be imported into MDS database. Fully qualified resolver class name need to be define for XML but do not need to load the class in OIM yet (it can be loaded later). 2. Coding the notification resolver All event owners have to provide a resolver class which would resolve the data dynamically at run time. Custom resolver class must implement the interface oracle.iam.notification.impl.NotificationEventResolver and override the implemented methods with actual implementation. It has 2 methods: S# Methods Descriptions 1. public List<NotificationAttribute> getAvailableData(String eventType, Map<String, Object> params); This API will return the list of available data variables. These variables will be available on the UI while creating/modifying the Templates and would let user select the variables so that they can be embedded as a token as part of the Messages on the template. These tokens are replaced by the value passed by the resolver class at run time. Available data is displayed in a list. The parameter "eventType" specifies the event Name for which template is to be read.The parameter "params" is the map which has the entity name and the corresponding value for which available data is to be fetched. Grub 'Read Error' - Only Loads with LiveCD

Problem After installing Ubuntu to complete my Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 dual-boot setup, Grub just wouldn't load at all unless I boot from the LiveCD. Afterwards, everything works completely normal. However, this workaround isn't a solution and I'd like to be able to boot without the aid of a disc. Logging connection strings

If you some of the dynamic features of SSIS such as package configurations or property expressions then sometimes trying to work out were your connections are pointing can be a bit confusing. You will work out in the end but it can be useful to explicitly log this information so that when things go wrong you can just review the logs. You may wish to develop this idea further and encapsulate such logging into a custom task, but for now lets keep it simple and use the Script Task. The Script Task code below will raise an Information event showing the name and connection string for a connection. Now before somebody starts commenting that this is a security risk, I would like to highlight good practice for building connection managers. Firstly the Password property, or any other similar sensitive property is always defined as write-only, and secondly the connection string property only uses the public properties to assemble the connection string value when requested. In other words the connection string will never contain the password. I have seen a couple of cases where this is not true, but that was just bad development by third-parties, you won’t find anything like that in the box from Microsoft. Whilst writing this code it made me wish that there was a custom log entry that you could just turn on that did this for you, but alas connection managers do not even seem to support custom events. It did however remind me of a very useful event that is often overlooked and fits rather well alongside connection string logging, the Execute SQL Task’s custom ExecuteSQLExecutingQuery event. To quote the help reference Custom Messages for Logging - Provides information about the execution phases of the SQL statement. Log entries are written when the task acquires connection to the database, when the task starts to prepare the SQL statement, and after the execution of the SQL statement is completed. The log entry for the prepare phase includes the SQL statement that the task uses. It is the last part that is so useful, how often have you used an expression to derive a SQL statement and you want to log that to make sure the correct SQL is being returned? You need to turn it one, by default no custom log events are captured, but I’ll refer you to a walkthrough on setting up the logging for ExecuteSQLExecutingQuery by Jamie.

Cisco VPN Client Behind ASA 5505

I'm trying to get connected to another ASA via Cisco VPN Client. I am behind an ASA 5505 myself and I am tryihng to VPN to a 5510. I get the message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding. I can connect to the other ASA if I use a normal cheap Linksys. Logging connection strings

If you some of the dynamic features of SSIS such as package configurations or property expressions then sometimes trying to work out were your connections are pointing can be a bit confusing. You will work out in the end but it can be useful to explicitly log this information so that when things go wrong you can just review the logs. You may wish to develop this idea further and encapsulate such logging into a custom task, but for now lets keep it simple and use the Script Task. The Script Task code below will raise an Information event showing the name and connection string for a connection. Now before somebody starts commenting that this is a security risk, I would like to highlight good practice for building connection managers. Firstly the Password property, or any other similar sensitive property is always defined as write-only, and secondly the connection string property only uses the public properties to assemble the connection string value when requested. In other words the connection string will never contain the password. I have seen a couple of cases where this is not true, but that was just bad development by third-parties, you won’t find anything like that in the box from Microsoft. Whilst writing this code it made me wish that there was a custom log entry that you could just turn on that did this for you, but alas connection managers do not even seem to support custom events. It did however remind me of a very useful event that is often overlooked and fits rather well alongside connection string logging, the Execute SQL Task’s custom ExecuteSQLExecutingQuery event. To quote the help reference Custom Messages for Logging - Provides information about the execution phases of the SQL statement. Log entries are written when the task acquires connection to the database, when the task starts to prepare the SQL statement, and after the execution of the SQL statement is completed. The log entry for the prepare phase includes the SQL statement that the task uses. It is the last part that is so useful, how often have you used an expression to derive a SQL statement and you want to log that to make sure the correct SQL is being returned? You need to turn it one, by default no custom log events are captured, but I’ll refer you to a walkthrough on setting up the logging for ExecuteSQLExecutingQuery by Jamie.

Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? How do I get this to work. Thanks. Observing flow control idle time in TCP

Previously I described how to observe congestion control strategies during transmission, and here I talked about TCP's sliding window approach for handling flow control on the receive side. A neat trick would now be to put the pieces together and ask the following question - how often is TCP transmission blocked by congestion control (send-side flow control) versus a zero-sized send window (which is the receiver saying it cannot process any more data)? So in effect we are asking whether the size of the receive window of the peer or the congestion control strategy may be sub-optimal. The result of such a problem would be that we have TCP data that we could be transmitting but we are not, potentially effecting throughput. So flow control is in effect: when the congestion window is less than or equal to the amount of bytes outstanding on the connection. We can derive this from args[3]-tcps_snxt - args[3]-tcps_suna, i.e. the difference between the next sequence number to send and the lowest unacknowledged sequence number; and when the window in the TCP segment received is advertised as 0 We time from these events until we send new data (i.e. args[4]-tcp_seq = snxt value when window closes. So if you wish to change congestion control algorithm in Oracle Solaris 11, a useful step may be to see if congestion really is an issue on your network. Scripts like the one posted above can help assess this, but it's worth reiterating that if congestion control is occuring, that's not necessarily a problem that needs fixing. Recall that congestion control is about controlling flow to prevent large-scale drops, so looking at congestion events in isolation doesn't tell us the whole story. For example, are we seeing more congestion events with one control algorithm, but more drops/retransmission with another? As always, it's best to start with measures of throughput and latency before arriving at a specific hypothesis such as "my congestion control algorithm is sub-optimal".

Matplotlib pick event order for overlapping artists

I'm hitting a very strange issue with matplotlib pick events. I have two artists that are both pickable and are non-overlapping to begin with ("holes" and "pegs"). When I pick one of them, during the event handling I move the other one to where I just clicked (moving a "peg" into the "hole"). Then, without doing anything else, a pick event from the moved artist (the peg) is generated even though it wasn't there when the first event was generated. My only explanation for it is that somehow the event manager is still moving through artist layers when the event is processed, and therefore hits the second artist after it is moved under the cursor. So then my question is - how do pick events (or any events for that matter) iterate through overlapping artists on the canvas, and is there a way to control it? I think I would get my desired behavior if it moved from the top down always (rather than bottom up or randomly). I haven't been able to find sufficient enough documentation, and a lengthy search on SO has not revealed this exact issue. So, I enabled Drupal Themer to get a candidate name. for events page, it gave me page-node.tpl.php and it gives same for News page as well :( how can I separate these pages? I expected sth like page-event-node.tpl , but no... :/ Drupal Themer also give unique candidate name for event page like page-node-18.tpl.php but it doesnt mean anything since I can not create a general layout for all events by this node name. :( Appreciate helps so much!! What are good NoSQL and non-relational database solutions for audit/logging database

What would be suitable database for following? I am especially interested about your experiences with non-relational NoSQL systems. Are they any good for this kind of usage, which system you have used and would recommend, or should I go with normal relational database (DB2)? I need to gather audit trail/logging type information from bunch of sources to a centralized server where I could generate reports efficiently and examine what is happening in the system. Typically a audit/logging event would consist always of some mandatory fields, for example globally unique id (some how generated by program that generated this event) timestamp event type (i.e. user logged in, error happened etc) some information about source (server1, server2) Additionally the event could contain 0-N key-value pairs, where value might be up to few kilobytes of text. It must run on Linux server It should work with high amount of data (100GB for example) it should support some kind of efficient full text search It should allow concurrent reading and writing It should be flexible to add new event types and add/remove key-value pairs to new events. Flexible=no changes should be required to database schema, application generating the events can just add new event types/new fields as needed. it should be efficient to make queries against database. For reporting and exploring what happened. For example: How many events with type=X occurred in some time period. Get all events where field A has value Y. Get all events with type X and field A has value 1 and field B is not 2 and event occurred in last 24h

"Collection was modified..." Issue

Hey guys, I've got a function that checks a list of objects to see if they've been clicked and fires the OnClick events accordingly. I believe the function is working correctly, however I'm having an issue: When I hook onto one of the OnClick events and remove and insert the element into a different position in the list (typical functionality for this program), I get the "Collection was modified..." error. I believe I understand what is going on: The function cycles through each object firing OnClick events where necessary An event is fired and the object changes places in the list per the hooked function An exception is thrown for modifying the collection while iterating through it My question is, how to do I allow the function to iterate through all the objects, fire the necessary events at the proper time and still give the user the option of manipulating the object's position in the list? Adobe AIR: touch screen doesn't trigger mouse down event correctly

i have designed a gaming kiosk app in as3 i am using it on a Sony vaio l pc (like hp's touchsmarts) in windows 7 the app doesn't need any multi-touch gestures (only single touch clicks and drags) so i am using mouse events everything is fine (including mouse click and move events) except that a single touch to the screen (with no move) doesn't fire a mouse down. it is fired only after a small move of the finger outside the app, on my desktop, i see that the small windows 7 cursor jumps immediately to where a finger is placed, meaning this issue isn't a hardware or a windows problem but rather how internally the flash app receives "translated" touch-to-mouse events from the os. for example, in a windows Solitaire game, a simple touch to the screen immediately highlights the touched card. in my app, a button will change to the down state only if i touch it and also move my finger slightly (click events - down and up - are triggered fine) shouldn't the MOUSE_DOWN event trigger exactly like how a TOUCH_BEGIN would in the new touchevent class? any ideas?

What happens when I test the whole thing: - first user click on a day, then time of day. Popup opens with time and date indicated on the form. When user submits the form, dialog closes and calendar refreshes its events.... and the event added by the user appears several times (from 4 to up to 11 times!). The form has been processed several times by the receiving php script?! - second user click, the popup opens, user submit empty form. Form is submitted (validate function not triggered) and user redirected to empty page json-events.php (ajaxForm not triggered either) Obviously, my code is wrong (and dirty as well, sorry). Why is the submitted form, submitted several time to receiving script and why is the javascript function EventLoad triggered only once ? Thank you very much for you help. This problem is killing me !

problem with sqldatasource and data binding

I am trying to pull out data from the table I had from the database according to the id which is passed from the URL. However I always get data from id= 1? Why? Capture window close event

I want to capture events that close editor window (tab) in Visual Studio 2008 IDE. When I use dte2.Application.Events.get_CommandEvents(null, 0).BeforeExecute I successfully captured such events: File.Close File.CloseAllButThis File.Exit Window.CloseDocumentWindow and others. If code in window is not acceptable, I stop the event (CancelDefault = true). But if I click "X" button on the right hand side, "Save Changes"; dialog appears, tab with editor window close and I have no any captured events. In this case I can capture WindowClosing event, but can not cancel the event. Is it poosible to handle "x" button click and stop event?

Know any unobstrusive, simple GUI guidelines or design recommendations for notifications?

Hello again. I'm in the process of designing and testing various ideas for an application whose main functionality will be to notify users of occurring events and offer them with a choice of actions for each. The standard choice would be to create a queue of events showing a popup in the taskbar with the events and actions, but I want this tool to be the less intrusive and disrupting as possible. What I'm after is a good book or papers on studies of how to maximize user productivity in these intrinsically disruptive scenarios (in other words, how to achieve the perfect degree of annoying-ness, not too much, not too little). The user is supposedly interested in these events, they subscribe to them and can choose the actions to perform on each. I prefer books and papers, but the usual StackOverflow wisdom is appreciated as well. I'm after things like: Don't use popups, use instead X Show popups at most 3 seconds Show them in the left corner Use color X because it improves readability and disrupts less That is, cognitive aspects of GUI design that would help users in such a scenario.
