• Which is better jplayer or jwplayer?

  I need to make a video slideshow( slides to contain embedded video players and must play mp4 files), and I am kind of confused what would be the best free solution I can use? jplayer and jwplayer both seem good, but I can't find any comparisons between them, so I want some expert opinions and user experiences on these two. Also if there are any other free and open source solutions you can recommend, i am all ears ;) My requirements are: The player must be html5 with fallback to flash. Should support mp4 files as well as flv. Should also have the ability to double as an audio player(mp3) along with video capabilities. Should be lightweight and customizable easily in terms of looks.

  As of July 10, 2012, Stack Overflow contains 3,345,864 questions, out of which 20,840 questions are tagged as "Algorithm" - this is less than 0.6% ! I find it disturbing. Many programmers have several years of academic education in computer science / software engineering. Most of them are smart... When asked, most would say that they love algorithms. Computer programming is generally about solving problems using algorithms... Yet, only 1 of 160 questions is tagged as algorithm related. What does it say about our profession?

• Only MKV format available in HandBrake

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit. I have installed HandBrake rev5474 (i686), which I believe is the latest, and the Ubuntu Restricted Extras. I am able to play DVDs via VLC but when it comes to ripping them, so that I can back them up to my Twonky media server, I have issues. I launch HandBrake and find that the only format available for me to select is MKV. When I used to run Handbrake on this machine while I was running Ubuntu 13.10 and lower I had no issues and **lots of formats (including MP4 which is what I'm really after) but since reformating and installing 14.04 I've had this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

At the same time the proliferation and use of open source software seems to be greatly encouraged in many programming communities. Is my thinking that the full embrace of open source software everywhere will hurt the software industry a misconception? If it is not, then why do so many programmers love open source software?

  My friend and i are developing a android game. This is my first time develop android game, so we don't know how to code The game is 2d game and we develop it without 3rd party engine / framework. Now we got a few questions, hope you can help us. In game play, using 'Surfaceview' only to achieve it. Is it best practice? On 'Surfaceview', a lot of difference button(Menu, pause, game object..etc) is on it, but I don't know how to code it? (actually, i have already done, but...so stupid way. Detect the user touch position (x, y) to identify where they touch[rect(x1,y1,x2,y2).contain(x,y)] Is it right? Teach me how to do if wrong. View / Surfaceview / OpenGL, which is suitable for us? • Ars Technica .ars URL suffix -- Vanity or SEO Benefit?

  The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

  My question has two parts: 1) In your team or organization, do you ever do in-person code reviews with all or part of a team, as opposed to online reviews using some sort of tool? 2) How do you structure these meetings? Do you choose to focus on one person's code in a given meeting? Do you look at everything? Take a random sample? Ask people on the team what they'd like to have looked at of theirs? • Health problem of a programmer

  Hi all, I've been annoyed by this fingers ache for quite a long time, my fingers ache because of too much mouse clicking during office hour plus play games after work. I forget game for a while and my fingers are getting better, but still my right pointing finger would feel pressure when I click the mouse. I haven't go to a doctor because I afraid the fee would be high and he would just suggest me too get rest for the fingers, also, I don't know what kind of doctor should I go and see. My fingers get less pressure if I use my expensive deathadder ( what a shame, I bought this for gaming, but now I use it for rest ) at home because its buttons are softer, however I cannot have such expensive mouse at my office because I am afraid people would steal it. I use some trick when I am using the mouse such as single-click open a file, adding more shortcuts at desktop for common jobs, do you guys have some other tips for me? Thank you.

  Hi, does anyone know if there will be a Wrox Box 4? I would love to get something like that, but the latest collection of Wrox books seems to be the release for 3.5. I really need to get up to date with the latest version of .NET. I'm not sure if there will be a Wrox Box 4 though, because it looks like Wiley is now publishing Wrox books under Wiley, and not Wrox anymore. So it looks like I'm going to have to go with Professional ASP.NET 4 in C# Instead of the Wrox Box 3.5

• Recover personal PGP key from old home

  Many lives ago, I created a GPG key to sign the Ubuntu Code of Conduct on Launchpad. I haven't really used it since. Some time later, I backed up my home and started fresh. That was all back in 2009. I still have the backup but now I'm starting to play around with Quickly and upload things to Launchpad, I could really do with having my PGP key back. I don't really know how the key is organised or where it's stored, but I'd like to recover my old key rather than generate a new one. Any idea where to start?

• Secure login for a game that is open source

  I am making a game which i will be open sourcing. Its a simple arcade like game but requires a network connection because it is meant to be played with other people. The thing i am worrying about is how would i be sure that the client is the one that i put out for the end user to play with? Kind of a like of sv_pure for Team Fortress 2. I was thinking of different ways to combat this such as the server requesting the client's version or even it's md5 hash but people with simple java knowledge could just force a method to always return what the server wants.

• How are buttons made to be clicked?

  I just want to ask a general question. According to that answer, Ill continue thinking. You know in games there are lots of clickable items. Play button, exit, comboboxes maybe etc. My question is are those buttons drawn in same canvas with background and all other things, or for every different thing there is another canvas object? My question is about for general. Im not asking about a specific game, im asking how they are made generally. Im planning to start a game on Android, and Im confused actually how to design buttons, and other object. Probably Im going to use View/SurfaceView for now. I don't have much experience with OpenGL yet. Thanks in advance.

• Is paying programmers to "test" for bugs normal? [on hold]

  I recently hired a programming team to do a port of my iPad app to the iPhone and Android platforms. I also wanted them to implement a bunch of tips on how to play the app, similar like you would find in Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. They want to charge 12 hours @ $35/hr for the "Testing all of the Tips", telling me that normally it would take them more than 25 hours but that they will 'bear the difference'. I have never heard of this, but maybe it's a new practice? I am used to devs doing their own quality control, and then having a testing/acceptance period... Am I missing something? • Save match details to SQLite or XML?

  I'm making a (conceptual) system to simulate any kind of sports match (like soccer,basketball,etc) with actions (for example pass,pass,out,pass,score) so it will be like a real report. The main statistics (play time, number of actions etc.) I'm saving to a MySQL database, but the report itself, can contain more than 1000 actions per match. To avoid millions of records in my database I'm thinking of saving the detailled report in a SQLite database or a XML file. For every match played, a file will be created. When a user request the match details, I read the file for details. What is the best choice for this purpose? SQLite or XML?

• Why do I have to choose between "management" and "technical" tracks in my career?

  I was recently laid off, and although I found a new gig I'm a bit frustrated with how career tracks work in the land of software development. I really love doing a bit of everything: coding, testing, architect(ing), leadership/management, customer contact, requirements gathering, staff development, etc. Software companies, however, want me to fit into a niche: I'm either a coder, a tester, or a manager. When I try to explain to them that I'm best when I'm doing all of those at once, they seem very confused. I'm sympathetic to their interests, but at the same time frustrated that the industry works this way. Any advice? Do I just need to get with the program, so to speak?

• 12.04 Random sounds sometimes after startup

  I'm not quite sure what the sound is, but it has only started happening in the last two days. The only way I can describe it would be that it sounds like a wooden xylophone being tapped lightly. It will play at random intervals ranging between 1 second to a couple minutes for up to a half hour (from what I have noticed) after startup. If anybody has any ideas as to what is causing this or how to fix it I would appreciate it. • Change resolution in Waking Mars

  I purchased and installed the humble bundle game "Waking Mars" via the Ubuntu Software Center and it works really well except for some issues with changing settings, namely with the resolution. The in-game settings for changing resolution and entering/exiting fullscreen were easy enough to find and toggle, and when you do it asks to restart the application. When you restart it, all other settings you updated are reflected except for the changes to the resolution. (I'm trying to get it to play in windowed mode that fits onto one monitor, but it will only default to windowed mode with the full dual monitor resolution). I noticed that it writes these values to ~/.local/share/WakingMars/UserSettings.ini. When I change the resolution, it is properly written to in this settings file...but it never is reflected when you restart the application. Any ideas what's wrong?
