• how can i give other drives and partitions short, meaningful names (in nautilus)?

  I have 4 disk drives in my 64-bit ubuntu 12.04 LTS computer at the moment, plus one external USB drive. In nautilus and unity the external drive has a nice short descriptive name "mcat", but all partitions on the 4 internal drives are displayed as a size (834GB filesystem) or a huge 32-character string form of a GUID: I'm guessing the external drive is nice, short, sweet and readable because that drive may have no partitions (well, just one I guess) and that name may be the drive label, whereas partitions usually don't have names. That may explain my problem, but doesn't solve it. Is there some way to give reasonable names to these partitions in nautilus and unity?

• Mobile Apps for Oracle E-Business Suite

  Many things have changed in the mobile space over the last few years. Here's an update on our strategy for mobile apps for the E-Business Suite. Mobile app strategy We're building our family of mobile apps for the E-Business Suite using Oracle Mobile Application Framework.  This framework allows us to write a single application that can be run on Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. Mobile apps for the E-Business Suite will share a common look-and-feel. The E-Business Suite is a suite of over 200 product modules spanning Financials, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and many other areas. Our mobile app strategy is to release standalone apps for specific product modules.  Our Oracle Timecards app, which allows users to create and submit timecards, is an example of a standalone app. Some common functions that span multiple product areas will have dedicated apps, too. An example of this is our Oracle Approvals app, which allows users to review and approve requests for expenses, requisitions, purchase orders, recruitment vacancies and offers, and more. You can read more about our Oracle Mobile Approvals app here: Now Available: Oracle Mobile Approvals for iOS Our goal is to support smaller screen (e.g. smartphones) as well as larger screens (e.g. tablets), with the smaller screen versions generally delivered first.  Where possible, we will deliver these as universal apps.  An example is our Oracle Mobile Field Service app, which allows field service technicians to remotely access customer, product, service request, and task-related information.  This app can run on a smartphone, while providing a richer experience for tablets. Deploying EBS mobile apps The mobile apps, themselves (i.e. client-side components) can be downloaded by end-users from the Apple iTunes today.  Android versions will be available from Google play. You can monitor this blog for Android-related updates. Where possible, our mobile apps should be deployable with a minimum of server-side changes.  These changes will generally involve a consolidated server-side patch for technology-stack components, and possibly a server-side patch for the functional product module. Updates to existing mobile apps may require new server-side components to enable all of the latest mobile functionality. All EBS product modules are certified for internal intranet deployments (i.e. used by employees within an organization's firewall).  Only a subset of EBS products such as iRecruitment are certified to be deployed externally (i.e. used by non-employees outside of an organization's firewall).  Today, many organizations running the E-Business Suite do not expose their EBS environment externally and all of the mobile apps that we're building are intended for internal employee use.  Recognizing this, our mobile apps are currently designed for users who are connected to the organization's intranet via VPN.  We expect that this may change in future updates to our mobile apps. Mobile apps and internationalization The initial releases of our mobile apps will be in English.  Later updates will include translations for all left-to-right languages supported by the E-Business Suite.  Right-to-left languages will not be translated. Customizing apps for enterprise deployments The current generation of mobile apps for Oracle E-Business Suite cannot be customized. We are evaluating options for limited customizations, including corporate branding with logos, corporate color schemes, and others. • How do I record audio through M-Audio Keystudio?

  Hi, I'm trying to get my M-Audio Keystudio (which has an audio input as well as the keyboard) to record audio to Audacity. I'm in Ubuntu 10.10. When I look at the Sound Preferences I can select "M-Audio RunTime DFU Analog Stereo" as my input device. However, when I try to record in Audacity, Audacity remains frozen. The program seems to be running and recording, but the recording cursor won't advance. If I reset the audio input to the internal sound card, recording works normally. Any ideas what to look for?

Sometime back I posted Oracle's vision for layered SOA security Here is a quick summary: Use OWSM in Green Zone Use OEG in Red Zone (DMZ) If you need end-to-end security in which case they will want both OWSM and OEG. This is the topology I would recommend for most customers. If you need only Green Zone security - then use OWSM in conjunction with Oracle FMW products like SOA Suite, OSB, ADF, WLS, BI, etc both on the Client Side and Service Side (assuming you are using FMW technologies for both Clients and Services). If you need only Red Zone security - then use OEG on the Service Side. You can use OWSM for the Client Side if you are using FMW to build your clients.

• Outlying DBAs

  Read an interesting book recently, ‘Outliers – the story of success’ by Malcolm Gladwell. There’s a good synopsis of the book here on wikipedia. I don’t want to write in detailed review of the book, but it’s well worth a read. There were a couple of sections which I thought were possibly relevant to IT professionals and DBAs in particular. Firstly, ‘the 10,000 hour rule’, in this section Gladwell asserts that to be a real ‘elite performer’ takes 10,000 hours of practice. ‘Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good, it’s the thing you do that makes you good’.  He gives many interesting examples – the Beatles, Bill Gates etc – but I was wondering could this be applied to DBAs ? If it takes 10,000 hours to be a really elite DBA – how long does that really take ? 8 hours a day makes 1250 days. If we assume that most DBAs work around 230 days a year – then it takes around 5 and a half years to become an elite DBA.   But how much time per day does a DBA spend actually doing DBA work ? Certainly it’s my experience that the more experienced I get as a DBA, the less time I seem to spend actually doing DBA work – ie meetings, change-control meetings, project planning, liasing with other teams, appraisals etc.  Is it more accurate to assume that a DBA spends half their time actually doing ‘real’ DBA work – or is that just my bad luck ?   So, in reality, I’d argue it can take at least 5 1/2 and more likely closer to 10 years to become an elite DBA. Why do I keep receiving CVs for senior DBAs with 2-4 years actual DBA experience ? In the second section I found particularly interesting, Gladwell writes about analysis of plane crashes and the importance of in-cockpit communications. He describes a couple of crashes involving Korean Airlines – where co-pilots were often deferrential to pilots, and unwilling to openly criticise their more senior colleagues or point out errors when things were going badly wrong… There’s a better summary of Gladwell’s concepts on mitigation  here – but to apply this to a DBA role… If you are a DBA and you do not agree with  a decision of one of your superiors, then it’s your duty as a DBA to say what you think is wrong, before it’s too late…  Obviously there’s a fine line between constructive criticism and moaning, but a good senior DBA or manager should be able to take well-researched criticism\debate from a more junior DBA.   Is this really possible ?

• What is the ideal self hosted search engine?

  I have an internal (intranet) site that is comprised of several blogs and forums, hundreds of static pages, lots of PDF files and several other document types. Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.

• ubuntu 13.04 recognizes usb mobile broadband modem as ethernet connection

• How to Get Myself Up to Speed in Building a Java Web App

  I'm a new developer at a fairly large company and I'm working on a Java Web Application with a senior developer there. The Web App is built on top of an IBM stack (RAD, DB2, WebSphere) and basically uses JSPs and Servlets. The Web App is an internal tool to be used by employees to manage data coming from Excel files. So, there are lots of database interaction going around like SQL commands. My question is: I don't know much about JavaEE as a whole and only know a little about JSPs and Servlets and I would like to get myself up to speed so I can understand and contribute to the Web App as fast as I could. What resources (tutorials, links, etc) should I be looking at? Am I supposed to get a book about JavaEE or something that focuses just on JSPs and Servlets?

  One the best error messages I have seen in a long time and I've seen some doozies!  There have been a fare few internal emails flying over the past week about issues with the template builder for MSWord not working. The issue has been found, so if you are hitting some behaviour similar to this: I have installed BI Publisher Desktop 11.1.1.6 for 32 bit. I have to load the data from XML to RTF Template. As per instruction when I click on tab Sample XML nothing happen. When I click on any other tab from BI Publisher menu, I am getting one error in pop-up menu “Automation Error Unspecified Error. I am unable to open any of the tab of BI Publisher menu including help. Have no fear, it's for once, not a BIP issue but a Microsoft one! Check here for what you need to do to resolve the error.

• Working with CPU cycles in Gameboy Advance

  I am working on an GBA emulator and stuck at implementing CPU cycles. I just know the basic knowledge about it, each instruction of ARM and THUMB mode as each different set of cycles for each instructions. Currently I am simply saying every ARM instructions cost 4 cycles and THUMB instructions cost 2 cycles. But how do you implement it like the CPU documentation says? Does instruction cycles vary depending on which section of the memory it's currently accessing to? http://nocash.emubase.de/gbatek.htm#cpuinstructioncycletimes According to the above specification, it says different memory areas have different waitstates but I don't know what it exactly mean. Furthermore, what are Non-sequential cycle, Sequential cycle, Internal Cycle, Coprocessor Cycle for? I saw in some GBA source code that they are using PC to figure out how many cycles each instruction takes to complete, but how are they doing it?

• Can I install ubuntu on usb hdd without loosing data on it?

  I have live-usb stick that I can boot latest live Ubuntu from. Then I have 160GB external WD hdd with few GB free of space. My notebook can't have any internal hdd so I was wondering if I can use my external one to install and boot Ubuntu and install new programs, save settings etc. without loosing (or moving around) any data on this external hdd. The best would be if I can somehow use the live-usb. I'm traveling so any "complicated" solution might be bit hard to implement. I do have an access to the Internet.

  I have a Internal Audio Hardware card and my Laptop (Lenevo IdeaPad) presents a single slot as a combo Microphone and headphone jack. On Windows, I attach my ipod headphone to jack and speak directly to my computer. I assume there is a microphone which is listening to my voice and I can communicate two-way. On Ubuntu, the microphone always seem to be listening to random noise. So any input by speaking to the computer is not possible. What could be the reason and how do I troubleshoot this?

• What are some client-side sitemap generators?

  Most of the sitemap generators I've found all scan my internal files and base it on that. However using apache and htaccess I have many aliases for things for example: /brand/model/photos/ is empty directory wise, but on the web it relocates it to a zenphoto gallery using htaccess. http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ does What I need, but I'd like to have more control over it and I need it to be dynamic and run weekly or daily. Allow for specific change frequencies based on the file/directory. I also want to be able to make a "pretty" sitemap html file. Counting the photo gallery I have around 300 links, without the photo gallery more like 100. I have MySQL, PHP 5.3 installed.

In a startup or internal development team situation, where there isn't a dedicated documentation department, it can take a lot of resources to maintain screen shots and associated user documentation, such as on-line help or even printable manuals. What tools are available to assist in creating screenshots of all the "screens" within an application (be they winforms, wpf or aspx) to help automate the capture of screen shots, and associating with the relevant documentation? In addiiton, are there any that allow automation of annotations of a particular control (so use cases like: Draw a red box around the Username control with a callout to say "This is where you'd enter your user name, in the form '[email protected]'")?

• gnome-control-center can't set display resolution under openbox

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 with Openbox on my laptop. Since I need to plug different external displays into it and Openbox environment doesn't automatically pick them up, I thought the best solution I can come up with is to use gnome-control-center and it's display settings tool from within Openbox. But although this tool does detect monitors correctly, it can't do any change -- clicking Apply button just doesn't seem to do anything. So my questions are: 1) how to get this tool working? 2) how to run "Displays" tool directly from command-line, skipping control center? 3) is there a better way to automatically detect and set resolutions on internal/external monitors under Openbox? Please note I tried arandr too and it doesn't even work for my environment (doesn't detect external display plugging in at all). For what it's worth, my laptop is Lenovo G560, Ubuntu is x64 version with all the updates rolled over. Thanks for your consideration.

• Event Driven Communication in Game Engine - Yes or No?

  As I am reading book Game Coding Complete (http://www.amazon.com/Game-Coding-Complete-Third-McShaffry/dp/1584506806/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295978774&sr=8-1), the author recommend Event Driven communication among the all game objects and modules. Basicaly, all the living game actors and object should communicate with the key modules (Physics, AI, Game Logic, Game View, etc..) via internal event messaging system. This would mean designing efficient event manager as well. My question is, whether this is proven and recommended approach. If it is not properly designed, it might mean consuming a lot of CPU cycles, which can be used elsewhere. This is especially true, if the game is targetted for mobile platform. What is your opinion and recommendation, please?

Build iOS and Android apps with once code base and get it done! By Steven Chan (Oracle Development)  Many things have changed in the mobile space over the last few years. Here's an update on our strategy for mobile apps for the E-Business Suite. Mobile app strategy We're building our family of mobile apps for the E-Business Suite using Oracle Mobile Application Framework.  This framework allows us to write a single application that can be run on Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. Mobile apps for the E-Business Suite will share a common look-and-feel. The E-Business Suite is a suite of over 200 product modules spanning Financials, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and many other areas. Our mobile app strategy is to release standalone apps for specific product modules.  Our Oracle Timecards app, which allows users to create and submit timecards, is an example of a standalone app. Some common functions that span multiple product areas will have dedicated apps, too. An example of this is ourOracle Approvals app, which allows users to review and approve requests for expenses, requisitions, purchase orders, recruitment vacancies and offers, and more. You can read more about our Oracle Mobile Approvals app here: Now Available: Oracle Mobile Approvals for iOS Our goal is to support smaller screen (e.g. smartphones) as well as larger screens (e.g. tablets), with the smaller screen versions generally delivered first.  Where possible, we will deliver these as universal apps.  An example is our Oracle Mobile Field Service app, which allows field service technicians to remotely access customer, product, service request, and task-related information.  This app can run on a smartphone, while providing a richer experience for tablets. Deploying EBS mobile apps The mobile apps, themselves (i.e. client-side components) can be downloaded by end-users from the Apple iTunes today.  Android versions will be available from Google play. You can monitor this blog for Android-related updates. Where possible, our mobile apps should be deployable with a minimum of server-side changes.  These changes will generally involve a consolidated server-side patch for technology-stack components, and possibly a server-side patch for the functional product module. Updates to existing mobile apps may require new server-side components to enable all of the latest mobile functionality. All EBS product modules are certified for internal intranet deployments (i.e. used by employees within an organization's firewall).  Only a subset of EBS products such as iRecruitment are certified to be deployed externally (i.e. used by non-employees outside of an organization's firewall).  Today, many organizations running the E-Business Suite do not expose their EBS environment externally and all of the mobile apps that we're building are intended for internal employee use.  Recognizing this, our mobile apps are currently designed for users who are connected to the organization's intranet via VPN.  We expect that this may change in future updates to our mobile apps. Mobile apps and internationalization The initial releases of our mobile apps will be in English.  Later updates will include translations for all left-to-right languages supported by the E-Business Suite.  Right-to-left languages will not be translated. Customizing apps for enterprise deployments The current generation of mobile apps for Oracle E-Business Suite cannot be customized. We are evaluating options for limited customizations, including corporate branding with logos, corporate color schemes, and others.   I have got a (old) Samsung J700i. When connecting with a USB cabel to Wammu first the access was denied. Now it is oké... However, when I try to get info out from the phone... I get error message: Error whlie communicating with phone Desciption: Internal phone error. Function: GetNextMemory Error code: 56 I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Wammu 0.36 Running on Python 2.7.3 Using wxPython 2.8.12.1 Using python-gammu 1.31.0 and Gammu 1.31.0 How may I access data on the phone? • What is the state of the art in OOP?

  I used to do a lot of object-oriented programming and found myself reading up a lot on how to do it well. When C++ was the dominant OOP language there was a very different set of best practices than have emerged since. Some of the newer ideas I know of are BDD, internal DSLs, and the importing of ideas from functional programming. My question is: is there any consensus on the best way to develop object-oriented software today in the more modern languages such as C#, Ruby, and Python? And what are those practices? For instance, I rather like the idea of stateless objects but how many are actually using that in practice? Or, is the state of the art to deemphasize the importance of OOP? This might be the case for some Python programmers but would be difficult for Rubyists.

• Assign subdomains to separate ports on web server

  I have set up an Abyss web server as a little experiment, and I want to know if it is possible to assign subdomains to different ports on the machine the web server is running on. I have a couple webUIs that I'd like to assign subdomains: 192.168.1.1:8000 becomes example.com/webui1/ 192.168.1.1:8001 becomes example.com/webui2/ The webUIs are available by accessing their ports via example.com:8000. I have tried using a reverse proxy, but it seems that this is only usable on one internal IP at a time. What other options do I have? Answer is good, but my current set up doesn't meet the requirements. Abyss Web Server X2 is required to use Virtual Hosts with Abyss.
