• Unity Dash and top toolbar won't open after updating to 12.10

  Today, I updated to Ubuntu 12.10. After re-starting, like the updater suggested, the toolbar on the top of the screen, and the dash won't load. I seem to be missing other features, as well, like alttab to switch windows, etc. I am able to access the Terminal, by typing CtrlAltT, which is how I was bale to access Firefox. How do I fix this problem? Edit: 2:10 PM on 10/19/12 As Chris Carter suggested, I'm including the results of the teminal command lspci (Sorry... • DockbarX inside AWN, preview window shifted on dual-screen after shifting from single-screen.

  I've been running dockbarx in AWN for sometime now. I started using dual-screens and started seeing a problem with the window preview. When I hover over the dockbarx icon to see the preview it appears on the other monitor. I'm assuming that this is due to it still thinking there is only one monitor. I was hoping someone new of a gconf-editor setting that I could set with the rest of my screen that changes my laptop from internal monitor to my dual-screen setup. Thanks in advance.

• cannot add movie file to pitivi

  when i try adding this movie file to pitivie i get the error as follows (i can play the file in mplayer just fine tho): Problem: An internal error occurred while analyzing this file: Could not find GStreamer caps mapping for FFmpeg codec 'h264', and you are using an external libavcodec. This is most likely due to a packaging problem and/or libavcodec having been upgraded to a version that is not compatible with this version of gstreamer-ffmpeg. Make sure your gstreamer-ffmpeg and libavcodec packages come from the same source/repository.   I purchased a windows web host from Godaddy.com When I want to use an Email verification component (that wants to connect to the Internet) on my host, I get an error related to Web Permission denied. (ASP.NET 4) As I search, I found that Godaddy has changed web permission in ASP.NET and restrict some features of that. When I want to take web permission on my site, I get error 500 (Internal Server Error) Can I give permission to an assembly only or solve my problem in another way? • Ubuntu 12.04 crashing

  We have a server with 2x32gb sas raid 1 and 4x1tb raid 10 + 2x1tb hot spares. Whenever we try to copy the 1tb and 1.5e6 files to a backup location (even just using tty1 cp command) it fails. We have tried using backintime and dejadup, and resorted to a manual cp to an external usb2 HDD. When that failed, we tried installing an internal HDD on the mobo (not on raid) and another cp, which also fails. The failures lock up the system and we are left with an unfortunate hard reboot situation. After reboot, syslog tends to be empty (only containing newly booted data) and we haven't a clue where to start. It has been 3 weeks since our last successful backup and we are getting nervous... -using 3ware raid controller, 8gb ram and nvidia pciexpress graphics with a gigabyte mobo and xeon 4-core processor.

• OSB, Service Callouts and OQL - Part 1

  Oracle Fusion Middleware customers use Oracle Service Bus (OSB) for virtualizing Service endpoints and implementing stateless service orchestrations. Behind the performance and speed of OSB, there are a couple of key design implementations that can affect application performance and behavior under heavy load. One of the heavily used feature in OSB is the Service Callout pipeline action for message enrichment and invoking multiple services as part of one single orchestration. Overuse of this feature, without understanding its internal implementation, can lead to serious problems. This post will delve into OSB internals, the problem associated with usage of Service Callout under high loads, diagnosing it via thread dump and heap dump analysis using tools like ThreadLogic and OQL (Object Query Language) and resolving it. The first section in the series will mainly cover the threading model used internally by OSB for implementing Route Vs. Service Callouts. Please refer to the blog post for more details.

• A very useful custom component

  Whenever I am debugging a problem in WebCenter Content (WCC) I often find it useful to see the contents of the internal data binder used by WCC when executing a service. I want to know the value of all parameters passed in by the caller, either a user in the web GUI or from an application calling the service via RIDC or web services. I also want to the know the value of binder variables calculated by WCC as it processes a service. What defaults has it applied based on configuration settings or profile rules? What values has it derived based on the user input? To help with this I created a  component that uses a java filter to dump out the contents of the internal data binder to the WCC trace file. It dumps the binder contents using the toString() method. You can register this filter code using many different filter hooks to see how the binder is updated as WCC processes the service. By default, it uses the validateStandard filter hook which is useful during a CHECKIN service. It uses the system trace section, so make sure that trace section is enabled before looking for the output from this component. • Software Tuned to Humanity

  I learned a great deal from a cynical old programmer who once told me that the ideal length of time for a compiler to do its work was the same time it took to roll a cigarette. For development work, this is oh so true. After intently looking at the editing window for an hour or so, it was a relief to look up, stretch, focus the eyes on something else, and roll the possibly-metaphorical cigarette. This was software tuned to humanity. Likewise, a user’s perception of the “ideal” time that an application will take to move from frame to frame, to retrieve information, or to process their input has remained remarkably static for about thirty years, at around 200 ms. Anything else appears, and always has, to be either fast or slow. This could explain why commercial applications, unlike games, simulations and communications, aren’t noticeably faster now than they were when I started programming in the Seventies. Sure, they do a great deal more, but the SLAs that I negotiated in the 1980s for application performance are very similar to what they are nowadays. To prove to myself that this wasn’t just some rose-tinted misperception on my part, I cranked up a Z80-based Jonos CP/M machine (1985) in the roof-space. Within 20 seconds from cold, it had loaded Wordstar and I was ready to write. OK, I got it wrong: some things were faster 30 years ago. Sure, I’d now have had all sorts of animations, wizzy graphics, and other comforting features, but it seems a pity that we have used all that extra CPU and memory to increase the scope of what we develop, and the graphical prettiness, but not to speed the processes needed to complete a business procedure. Never mind the weight, the response time’s great! To achieve 200 ms response times on a Z80, or similar, performance considerations influenced everything one did as a developer. If it meant writing an entire application in assembly code, applying every smart algorithm, and shortcut imaginable to get the application to perform to spec, then so be it. As a result, I’m a dyed-in-the-wool performance freak and find it difficult to change my habits. Conversely, many developers now seem to feel quite differently. While all will acknowledge that performance is important, it’s no longer the virtue is once was, and other factors such as user-experience now take precedence. Am I wrong? If not, then perhaps we need a new school of development technique to rival Agile, dedicated once again to producing applications that smoke the rear wheels rather than pootle elegantly to the shops; that forgo skeuomorphism, cute animation, or architectural elegance in favor of the smell of hot rubber. I struggle to name an application I use that is truly notable for its blistering performance, and would dearly love one to do my everyday work – just as long as it doesn’t go faster than my brain.

• Ubuntu 13.10 not playing DVD videos

  I installed Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 on my computer yesterday, and everything seems to be working fine so far, except that it isn't reading video or audio CD's and DVD's. At first, I inserted a DVD video, and it played normally for maybe 30-45 seconds before coming up with a "internal read error" or something like that. I was using the Totem player when the problem occurred, so I tried installing the VLC media player. It wouldn't read the disc at all, so I uninstalled the player. Now, the Totem player won't even begin playing the DVD. The player sometimes doesn't even open up when I insert the DVD, and other times it will but says it can't read it. I've tried several different DVD's and CD's with similar results. The computer is recognizing the optical drive, because when I open "Files", it shows the drive and the disc, but can't play it. Previously, I ran Ubuntu 13.04 with the Gnome desktop installed from the software center, and I had no issues. Any help is appreciated!

• Mount encrypted volumes from command line?

  If I have an encrypted external disk (or an internal disk that is not in fstab), I see an entry for it in Nautilus -- with an entry like "X GB Encrypted Volume". I can click on this volume, and am prompted for a password to decrypt and mount the device. But how do I do this from the command line? This wiki page, and other docs I can find, only refer to GUI methods of decrypting the device; but this won't do in the context of headless servers or SSH logins. Is there a simple way to get devices to mount to automatic locations in "/media" just like they would with the GUI? (I'm not asking about encrypted home directories -- I'm aware of ecryptfs-mount-private. This question is about additional encrypted volumes.)

• Grub rescue after installing Ubuntu from USB

  I have Windows 7 installed in my internal HDD and wanted to try out Ubuntu so I have an USB to put Ubuntu LiveUSB on and installed Ubuntu on a external HDD and everything worked out fine. Now the problem. If I remove the external HDD and try to boot Windows normally it shows the grub rescue screen. The only way to boot into Windows is by having the external HDD attached. Is there any way I can make it so I won't have to have the external HDD attached to be able to boot my Windows 7?

• My ubuntu with unity not loading after last reboot

  I have asus u36sd and after last reboot I can't start up my ubuntu 11.10. Usually I suspend my notebook by closing cover but today I reboot it and it not starting up. Booting flowing by normal till to login screen but if I move mouse cursor after that image immediately switch to console (without any error; only normal loading startup processes) and back to login screen. I can type my password and boot continuing loading but after few moment it again switch back to dark console and switch again to login screen. I can load recovery mode but if I try touch my cursor (by mouse or internal notebook touchpad) it again switch back to console and to login screen. But if I use only keyboard it work fine. Where I can see detailed log information about my problem?

Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching. • Are unit tests really used as documentation?

  I cannot count the number of times I read statements in the vein of 'unit tests are a very important source of documentation of the code under test'. I do not deny they are true. But personally I haven't found myself using them as documentation, ever. For the typical frameworks I use, the method declarations document their behaviour and that's all I need. And I assume the unit tests backup everything stated in that documentation, plus likely some more internal stuff, so on one side it duplicates the ducumentation while on the other it might add some more that is irrelevant. So the question is: when are unit tests used as documentation? When the comments do not cover everything? By developpers extending the source? And what do they expose that can be useful and relevant that the documentation itself cannot expose?

• Switching to HTTPS - redirect question

  Following the recent Google announcements about improved ranking for sites running on https we have a number of clients asking about this. Is it safe to just 301 redirect all pages to their SSL equivalent, for example in a common PHP include file: if($_SERVER['HTTPS']!="on"){ $redirect= "https://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; header("Location:$redirect",true,301); exit(); } Obviously I'm aware this is also possible within a .htaccess file but that cannot be modified in our case. Obviously all internal links would be switched to https:// links but obviously we need to sort out incoming links from Google and elsewhere. Is this a sound approach? Are there any other gotchas to be aware of?

• Instantiate proper class based on some input

  I'm attempting to understand how "switch as a code smell" applies when the proper code path is determined by some observable piece of data. My Webapp object sets an internal "host" object based on the hostname of the current request. Each Host subclass corresponds to one possible hostname and application configuration: WwwHost, ApiHost, etc. What is an OOP way for a host subclass to accept responsibility for a specific hostname, and for Webapp to get an instance of the appropriate subclass? Currently, the hostname check and Host instantiation exists within the Webapp object. I could move the test into a static method within the Host subclasses, but I would still need to explicitly list those subclasses in Webapp unless I restructure further. It seems like any solution will require new subclasses to be added to some centralized list.

• How can I connect to a Windows (7) running in VirtualBox from the network with RDP?

  I have a Windows7 guest running in a VirtualBox hosted by Precise (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS). In the settings of the virtual machine I have activated the 'Remote Display' (Enable Server) with default settings (server port, authentication method). The network of the guest is attached to NAT. I try to use Remmina to connect from the host to the guest. I tried 127.0.0.1, 127.0.0.2, the internal IP of Win7 (10. ...). Did not work so far. Do I have to active something and what on Win7 (home premium)? I would like to connect to the Win7 remote desktop from the local network. Can I stay in NAT mode (preferred due to our network policy), or do I have to go for 'bridged'? Thanks!

  Is there any Document Management System in Ubuntu? I tried Alfresco, RavenDB, Owl, Document Manager. Alfresco, RavenDB are heavy. More than my requirements. Owl having source issues. Document Manager im trying to install. Should keep data on the same machine as I am looking for more of internal purpose. Should allow to upload Zip files as well. If it extracts Zip it will be a great + Should allow to send email to preconfigured email addresses Should allow to upload data of size around 100MB at one go Should maintain history of documents also deleted documents Should allow role based document access. • Speakers don't work in 12.10 but they work fine on windows7

When I boot the system they don't work, but(don't know why) when I restart once or twice they work fine. There is no problem with my laptop(dell xps) as they work well on windows7. The rapid growth and success of “Cloud” services makes some decisions easier and some IT projects more successful, while dramatically lowering IT risks and enabling rapid growth. This is particularly true for “Software as a Service” (SaaS) applications, which essentially are complete web applications hosted and delivered over the Internet. Whether SaaS solutions – or any kind of cloud solution - are actually, ultimately the most cost-effective approach truly depends on the organization’s business and IT investment strategy. This leads us to Enterprise Architecture, the connectivity between business strategy and investment objectives, and the capabilities purchased or created to meet them. If an EA framework already exists, the approach to selecting a cloud-based solution and integrating it with internal IT systems (i.e. a “Hybrid IT” solution) is well-served by leveraging EA methods. If an EA framework doesn’t exist, or is simply not mature enough to address complex, integrated IT objectives – a hybrid IT/cloud initiative is the perfect project to advance and prove the value of EA. Why is this? For starters, the success of any complex IT integration project - spanning multiple systems, contracts and organizations, public and private – depends on active collaboration and coordination among the project stakeholders. For a hybrid IT initiative, inclusive of one or more cloud services providers, the IT services, business workflow and data governance challenges alone can be extremely complex, requiring many diverse layers of organizational expertise and authority. Establishing subject matter expertise, authorities and strategic guidance across all the disciplines involved in a hybrid-IT or hybrid-cloud system requires top-level, comprehensive experience and collaborative leadership. Tools and practices reflecting industry expertise and EA alignment can also be very helpful – such as Oracle’s “Cloud Candidate Selection Tool”. Using tools like this, and facilitating this critical collaboration by leading, organizing and coordinating the input and expertise into a shared, referenceable, reusable set of authority models and practices – this is where EA shines, and where Enterprise Architects can be most valuable. The “enterprise”, in this case, becomes something greater than the core organization – it includes internal systems, public cloud services, 3rd-party IT platforms and datacenters, distributed users and devices; a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Through facilitated project collaboration, leading to identification or creation of solid governance models and processes, a durable and useful Enterprise Architecture framework will usually emerge by itself, if not actually identified and managed as such. The transition from planning collaboration to actual coordination, where the program plan, schedule and resources become synchronized and aligned to other investments in the organization portfolio, is where EA methods and artifacts appear and become most useful. The actual scope and use of these artifacts, in the context of this project, can then set the stage for the most desirable, helpful and pragmatic form of the now-maturing EA framework and community of practice.   I have got an Acer Aspire 7750G: More info It has been running Ubuntu since I bought the laptop (12.10 as of now), but a few updates ago, I lost my microphone. It doesn't recognise the internal mic or the mic jack (although alsa seems to recognise it). I have been looking around, and I fixed it, but this was only temporary, after a reboot my mic was gone again. I haven't been able to find the fix, so I wanted to know whatever you guys know what I have to do to fix this. Thanks in advance.

• Implementation of a Rules Engine in Your Business Applicaitons

  I'm for an experience driven answer from a few software engineers who have implemented a rules engine in their internal business applications. How has it affected your business in the following ways: Ability to launch and iterate over business driven logic Ability to have "business users" perform the actual modification of those rules rather than developers. Ability to comprehend the business rules in general. Quality of the software releases. More or less bugs from the end-user's POV? Speed of the applications. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? Lastly, I'm looking for a qualification of your answer w/ respect to the architecture. Would you do the same thing if you were deploying to a 1-machine setup vs. your architecture vs. a multi-tier cloud-based distributed architecture using 1000s of machines? How would it be different?
