How to you prevent someone from getting a "new free trial period" by just creating a new login?

I am considering several options for the Trial version of our web app. The one I favor the most is the classic trial period. Of course, it's a LOT easier for someone to hack this system. They can defeat the various methods of fingerprinting the user, thusly: Browser cookie: Clear their cookies completely (or just for our site) or use a different device. Although Evercookie may help with the former. Email address: Create a new login (with a new email address) I'm going to monitor things for a while and just see how it goes. If it's a problem I'll consider requiring a credit card number matched to a name and billing zip code. Each such "ID constellation" would be considered one user. Someone could still have multiple credit card numbers but we could flag the same name+zipcode coming up again. Are there any better ways to do this?

Google analytics - drop in traffic

Bit of a general question here. We are in the process of converting a number of our clients from older web sites to new ones. The problem we are getting, and sorry for being so general here, is we are getting a sharp decline in traffic as reported on Google Analytics. It's not a gradual decline, it seems to hit almost as soon as the new site goes live. I've just got a few questions to see if there is something we are doing wrong: a) We are using the same analytics accounts going from old to new site. Is this a bad idea? b) The actual analytics code is integrated into the pages using a server-side include. IS this a bad idea? c) We structure our sites differently to our old site. IE. The old sites would pretty must have all the web pages in the root directory, and hyperlinks would be linked to the page files: EG. <a href="somepage.aspx">Link</a> Our new sites now have a directory structure that pretty much reflects the navigation structure, and hyper links link to the pages directory instead of the actual page: EG. <a href="/new-items/shoes/">New shoes</a> Is this a bad idea. I'm really searching for a needle in a haystack here. Would appriciate any help or advice as to why we are getting such a sharp and sudden drop in traffic. Again, so this is such a general question. We're looking for a good place to host our custom Django app (a fork of OSQA) and its postgresql backend. Requirements include: Linux Python 2.6 or (ideally) Python 2.7 Django 1.2 Postgres 8.4 or later DB backup/restore handled by the hoster, not us OS & dev-platform-stack patching/maintenance handled by the hoster, not us SSH access (so we can pull source code from GitHub, so we can install python eggs, etc.) ability to set up cron jobs (e.g. to send out dail email updates) ability to send up to 10K emails/day good performance (not ganged up with a zillion other sites on one CPU, not starved for RAM) FTP or SCP access to web logs dedicated public IP SSL support Costs under $1000/month for a relatively small site (<5M pageviews/month) Good customer service We already have a prototype site running on EC2 on top of a Bitnami DjangoStack. The problem is that we have to patch the OS, patch postgres, etc. We'd really prefer a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering, like Heroku offers for Rails apps, where all we need to worry about is deploying our code instead of worrying about system software patching and maintenance. Google App Engine is closest to what we're looking for, but they don't offer relational DB access (not yet at least). Anyone have a recommendation?

Worth changing the URL structure to incorporate keywords?

I am migrating my blog from PHP to ASP.NET and while recoding the whole website, I figured I might as well improve the URL structure. This is how an url looks like now: example.com/blog/post/755/hakurei-reimu-cosplay-from-touhou-by-kishigami-hana and this is hould it will look after the change (cosplay being the dynamic main keyword of the post): example.com/blog/cosplay/hakurei-reimu-cosplay-from-touhou-by-kishigami-hana-755/ The website is a bit more than a half year old and receives around 650k page views a month, mainly from search traffic. Of course everything would be redirected with 301 redirects. Do you think it is worth changing to a new URL structure, or will it harm the ranking in the long run?

Domain files download upon opening

I'm having this wierd issue with my Domain. My domain is saoo.eu hosted on HostZilla. The issue is that whenever I open an html/php file it automatically downloads it instead of opening it into the browser. Example the saoo.eu/test.html page. Same thing happens with the index.html file. What is going on? Also if I want an PHP code ran into an HTML file I have to add an .htaccess file. But it doesn't seem to work. Tested it before.

Domain transfer and New Hosting Management

I wanted to migrate from my older registrar to GoDaddy. Main reason because current registrar/hosting provider doesn't support .NET. My old registrar gave me control over the domain and hosting account. So, basically I have everything I would need. ( I know theory only ) I applied for Transfer of domain, bought a hosting package from GoDaddy and uploaded new web site. So, I am waiting for domain transfer and it tells me that I have to wait for 5-7 days for approval. Okay. But today, my old registrar told/taunted me that I really didn't need to apply for transfer. What could possibly I have done differently? My domain expires on this 15th. Now I don't know much about how all of this really works, but I am guessing he meant, "you should have waited for 15 days and let it expire after which you should buy the domain as it is expired". Is it really so(I doubt) or there are some other ways I could have got same result but without transferring domain? (like, changing DNS entries) I have read like all of the documentation available on namecheap/GoDaddy/Whois about domain transfers. But maybe because I am new to this it is all confusing to me. I would also like to know what to do with DNS settings after transfer succeeds. I want to kill the old website. So, what nameserver settings I need to change, new one or old one or both? I have old host+old domain registrar + old working site on one hand, on the other hand, new site + pending domain transfer + new DNS settings.

At what visitor share do you stop supporting a given browser?

I'm lead dev for a large website which has a higher than average percentage of IE6 users - about 4.4% of our audience. Our new version is going to make use of progressive enhancement - including transitions and effects as well as rounded corners, gradients, web fonts and other CSS techniques. Obviously there are cross-browser ways to achieve most of these things which require various amounts of work to implement. What I'm currently looking into - and what I'd like your experiences of - is how to decide at what point we draw the line between providing an enhanced experience vs just supporting the functionality. FYI, I believe that this question meets the six guidelines for great subjective questions as defined in the FAQ. I'm after answers detailing why and how, not too short, with constructive comments, experiences, facts and references. Thanks! Adam

Unable to ping ip address between two locations

I have two locations office and home. From home I am unable to access my mail server. and from the office I am unable to access my personal web server. now these two locations are about 100 yards away and share the same connection from the isp. Its payed for on the same account. Also they both have different static public ip addresses. office is 216.248.94.xxx and home is 216.51.158.xxx. I cannot ping each address from each location.

Attaining credit card data

I've read the many posts on this site that say we are not allowed to store cc numbers if we are not pci-compliant. But, I'm wondering if it is possible to send a CC number through a form to an email address? Would that be still infringing on the standards? The reason I ask is that a local business owner wants to retrieve a number through a form on his website, so he can manually enter the cc info on his end. I'm assuming the only way to properly get a credit card number is to setup a merchant account? What's the best way to get a cc number without calling the actual customer? I'm thinking email is a bad idea as well.

Preface We have a number of sites that use the same redirect mechanism across the board. We recently transitioned one site from non-localised to localised and detected that the Google+ integration doesn't show up on the search results any more AND the PageRank is gone from 2 to 0. How the redirect works If the UA sends a cookie (e.g. lang=en), redirect the user to /language (e.g. /en) If the UA is a bot (.*bot.*), redirect to /en If the Accept-Language header contains a usable, non-English language, redirect to /language (English is the default on many browsers in non-English regions) If there is a valid GeoIP lookup and the detected region is linked to a supported language, redirect to /language Redirect to /en We do of course on all pages have the proper markup to indicate the alternate language: <link hreflang="de" href="/de" rel="alternate" /> As far as we can tell, we follow all publicly available guidelines from Google, so we are a bit at odds if this is a bug in Google or we have done something wrong. Should I get an SGC enabled SSL certificate?

I'm in the market for a new SSL certificate and am wondering if I should get an SGC enabled certificate or not? In the past I have just used cheap SSL certificates but since this is for a new company website I want to make sure I have the best but I am unsure whether it is worth paying the extra. The documentation states that it just enables older browsers to use 128 bit encryption when they would normally only be able to use 40 or 56 bit encryption. Would you pay the extra for older browsers which are likely to be extremely rare?

My domain PageRank shows as unavailable, why is that?

My domain, http://www.anovaordemmundial.com , has been snatched by some opportunist when I failed to renew the domain. I know, it's all my fault :/ . After I have being ripped off and bought my domain back, and everything is configured and working, the pagerank for that domain shows as unavailable. Also searches for "nova ordem mundial" (in portuguese), which used to show my domain as the first result in searches in any language, now don't show it anymore. Do you think this is something temporary and it will recover its pagerank after a full crawl by google? There exists hundreds of sites pointing to my domain, that is why I got the previous relevance in searches. The domain is back for more than 5 days already. In reality, bing already Is there anything I can do to help get my domain back to its pagerank??? Thanks for the help!

I want to consult you in an SEO matter which i am completely lost with, I've built a social mobile application that allows users to share text content and made all the content that appears on the application available via the web through dedicated links, however, those links cannot be navigated through the website but they are generated when users shares content through the app to social media networks. I've implemented this method on three applications with totally different content, and I've directed all generated URLs to be from the main company website which is http://frootapps.com so when users shares something, the url will change to http://frootapps.com/qareeb/share.aspx?data=127311. My question, which one is more preferable, a dedicated website for each app that uses such method? or it is ok to keep doing it the same way I am doing it?

It is written everywhere that lack of original content is has a negative impact on ranking. But what is lack of original content? (I am not talking about duplicate content) I guess if you copy other site's content, this makes sense. But, assuming one develops its own functionalities, but similar functionalities are already available on other sites, is this considered lack of original content? Can Google decide to not index such pages (i.e., not give them a chance at all)? Are there other definition of 'lack of original content'?

I see files in filezilla, but the internet denies their existance

I am doing some updates to a 10-year old site, and I am baffled. Everything worked great locally, so I uploaded a bunch of stuff to the server using filezilla. Within filezilla I can see all of the files, but for some reason I get a 404 when trying to view them. It seems as though (at least for the folder Im currently checking) this is happening for items which are "farther down the list" alphabetically. I tried to re-upload a file individually but it didn't change anything. Is this an indication that I hit some sort of limit with the hosting company? And if so why can I still view the files from filezilla? Please offer guidance. I am at a loss.

Dear folks, a question about appearing in search results in google: A page of mine has this extremely unique page title: Ein gutes Logo passt wie ein Handschuh auf Ihre Marke in die Hände Now, when I search the phrase: Ein gutes Logo passt wie ein Handschuh auf Ihre Marke in die Hände Then all kinds of other irrelevant pages show up having only 1 or at best two words from my unqie title appearing, although I have searched for the entire phrase! And when I search the phrase in between quotes: "Ein gutes Logo passt wie ein Handschuh auf Ihre Marke in die Hände" Then it finds 1 result, which is my page. What is going on? Why doesn't show the unique result without the quotes? Thanks: your ideas and suggestions are welcome and much appreciated
