• Remote Desktop between Ubuntu Machines

  My desktop and my laptop are connected to the same router. I want to be able to remote login from my laptop to my desktop. Laptop is 12.04 and desktop is 12.10. I tried putting xrdp on my desktop, but remmina wouldn't work with it. I also tried the default screen-sharing, but it was very slow. Also tried rdesktop but it was very slow. I am on 12.10, FreeNX looks like a good option but they don't have a 12.10 release. And when I tried to install the 12.04 release, I got errors about dependencies missing. How can I get local-feeling remote login speeds?

• How accurate is header information received?

  Please see What could keep a javascript from loading properly on a page? In the header it shows that it is coming from IIS 6.0. How accurate is this information? Also this vendor (which is the worst I have worked with) made us go through a huge server switch process. Did they "upgrade" to W2003 IIS6.0? What would be the reason for a "new" server to be running this old of a version of IIS? Am I missing something?

• VS2010 tip: Cannot find the HttpUtility on .NET 4.0?

  Now that Visual Studio 2010 is here with more options and better colors, there are a few things that have changed a little and might confused you a bit. For example the good HttpUtility, if you are creating a Windows Console application or a Windows Service and you want to use that awesome class full of goodies, you would try to go to reference and add System.Web.dll, yet in the list that dll will be missing. So did they removed that dll in .NET 4? Not really, still there however there are not profiles...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Using apt-get from Canada

  I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, and until yesterday, everything was quite peachy. I have installed several packages (MySQL, apache2) and to my knowledge have those configured correctly. Upon configuration of phpMyAdmin, I found that I was missing the directory path /etc/phpmyadmin, which got me thinking about the install. I am new to Ubuntu, so I guess I missed the message telling me that I did not download phpMyAdmin successfully. Anyway, trying to use apt-get yesterday/today results in "Failed to fetch..." messages, even if just to run sudo apt-get update. Some notable details: ···no GUI, command line only (sudo apt-get gksu fails, go figure) ···can ping 4.2.2.2, so I know the internet is out there (somewhere) ···this is a dedicated computer, using Samba to share files with Windows, which does work ···attempted to edit my /sources.list file, for various American/Canadian mirror, to no effect ···ensured I have correct DNS settings in /etc/networks/interfaces I'm not sure where along the way it happened, but I seem to have lost connections to repositories... :) Any advice (including GO BACK TO WINDOWS) is appreciated.

• Google map in MediaWiki not showing

  I have upgraded MediaWiki from 1.9.3 to 1.16.1 in a new server. However, the google map is not showing in the link. It's a blank in that page but in the old server with old version it is working fine. I am not a developer so I have no clue on this. • Finding the try for an except or finally [migrated]

  I'm dealing with some code that has fantastically long methods (10k lines!) and some odd use of try-finally and try-except blocks. Some of the latter are long by themselves, and don't always have the try at the start of the method. Obviously I'm trying to refactor the code, but in the meantime just being able to fix a couple of common pathologies would be much easier if I could jump to the start of a block and see what is happening there. When it's 20+ pages away finding it even with the CNPack rainbows is just tedious. I'm using D2010 and have GExperts (with DelForExp), CNPack and DDevExtensions installed, but I can't find anything that lets me jump from the try to the finally or back. Am I missing something? Is there another add-in that I can use that will get me this?

• Gnome Shell installed not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I had Gnome Shell working perfectly on my desktop, and I tried to install it on my laptop by the exact same method, (tried apt-get, synaptic and software centre), but it won't work. It seems to install fine with no errors. If I select "Gnome" at login, I get the "Gnome Classic" interface rather than Gnome Shell. My laptop has sufficient specs to run Gnome Shell. Am I missing something? EDIT: I have just discovered that under System Details Graphics, it says "Unknown". So, Ubuntu hasn't recognised my graphics card, and I'm guessing this is why Gnome Shell can't work. I have a nVidia GeForce GT 525M. How can I get it working? (as you may have realised, I'm a linux noob)

• Theme sometimes fails to load on some UI elements

  I have no idea if this error as been seen before or not, I have looked around and found people saying they have errors that sound the same but none of the fixes work, my issue is that sometimes the theme does not load some parts of the UI, (the buttons and icons in this case) but the rest is just fine (window bars e.t.c) so I have no idea what the issue is, it works just fine for the most part but sometimes has this bug, if you restart the system it tends to fix it for some time so its hard to see how it could be a graphic card error, however I am very new to linux systems so I may be missing someting very fundamental here. • How do I install PHP 5.4.8 on a Win XP workstation?

  I am trying to create a MediaWiki site on my WinXP workstation, and need to install PHP 5.4.8. I have downloaded and unpacked the binaries for PHP, but the install instructions are telling me to "Run the MSI installer and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard." Unfortunately there is no MSI file provided in the package! Am I missing something? Besides a clue, I mean. Edited to add: I will try to make this clear. I am not going to be able to work with Apache.

• Syncing objects to a remote server, and caching on local storage

  What's the best method of sycing objects (as JSON) to a remote server, with local caching? I have some objects that will pretty much just be plain-text with some extra meta-data. I was thinking of perhaps including a "last modified date" for both Local storage and Remote storage. This could then be used to determine which object is the most recent. For example, even though objects will be saved to both local and remote when they are saved, sometimes the user may not have internet access, or the server may be down, or any other number of things. In this case, the last modified date for remote storage would be reverted to its previous date. Local storage would remain as it is. At this point, the user could exit the application, and when they reload the application would then look at the last modified dates of the local and remote storages, and decide. Is there anything I'm missing with this? Is there a better method that I could use?

• Why does Ubuntu's webkit inspector look just like Safari?

  In older Ubuntu, the python-webkit inspector looked like Chrome, as you can see in these screenshots: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13132459 (It had some annoying bugs, too.) I see Midori's inspector also looks just like Safari, and still has some bugs. In the latest 14.04's python-webkit embedded browser, the inspector actually looks just like Safari - and also seems to still have bugs (icons missing, problems selecting). Is there a reason for this drastic change, or is it just a default configuration? Is there a recommended way to get the webkit-inspector fully working?

• totally stuck trying to SSHing remote server

  Hey guys, So i've been given access to ssh a server. I have the username/password, but server apparently requires a public key (now bear in mind that i am a noob in ssh). When I do: ssh -p 52 [email protected] terminal says Permission denied (publickey). So I went using ssh-keygen -t rsa and got myself the id_rsa and id_rsa.pub files in /root/.ssh. Chmoded /root/.ssh to 700 and /root/.ssh/* to 600. Tried sshing server.com again, same error. What am I missing? I've been given a Putty Pagant Key file (.ppk) by the SYSADMIN of server.com. Apparently, other users (all Windows) can connect using Putty Pagant.exe. Please help :)

• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site? [migrated]

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• Not enough components to start the RAID array?

  I'm trying to retrieve data from a "Western Digital MyBook World Edition (white light)" NAS device. This is basically an embedded Linux box with a 1TB HDD in it formatted in ext3. It stopped booting one day for no apparent reason. I have extracted the HDD from the NAS device and installed it in a desktop machine running Ubuntu 10.10 in the hope of accessing the files on the drive. Unfortunately, Ubuntu has not been able to mount the drive automatically. Having started up Disk Utility I see the drive as a multi disk device called "Array (Array)" showing Metadata Version 0.90.0. The device state is: "Not Running, not enough components to start". When I click the "Start RAID Array" button I get an error saying: "Not enough components to start the RAID array". Can you please tell me which components are missing and how to install them to get access to the drive's filesystem?

• In the world of .Net, managed code and the web is there still a place for VBA?

  Microsoft has moved away from the COM stack, VB6 is so last century and .Net rules the (MS) roost. Yet I find myself still banging out reams of VBA code - for a new project automating Excel seeing as you ask. I've tried to doing the same kind of thing using VSTO and it was just too damn buggy/hard/inefficient with a broken development model. I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm missing something, OTOH I really can't see a better way of solving this problem. What are your thoughts?

• Network Computers Not Showing up

  Alright, 3 machines running, two using Ubuntu 11.10 and one on Mac OS X. On the two Ubuntu machines, both have samba installed and configured on the same workgroup, "HOME". On machine 1, I can see all networked machines. On machine 2, I can only see the Mac OS X machine. It doesn't show the other Ubuntu machine. What am I missing on machine 2 to see all networked computers? Any suggestions are welcome. I'm pretty much stumped.

  I have a basic 2D tower defense game in C++. Each map is a separate class which inherits from GameState. The map delegates the logic and drawing code to each object in the game and sets data such as the map path. In pseudo-code the logic section might look something like this: update(): for each creep in creeps: creep.update() for each tower in towers: tower.update() for each missile in missiles: missile.update() The objects (creeps, towers and missiles) are stored in vector-of-pointers. The towers must have access to the vector-of-creeps and the vector-of-missiles to create new missiles and identify targets. The question is: where do I declare the vectors? Should they be members of the Map class, and passed as arguments to the tower.update() function? Or declared globally? Or are there other solutions I'm missing entirely?

• Determining the angle to fire a shot when target and shooter moves, and bullet moves with shooter velocity added in

  I saw this question: Predicting enemy position in order to have an object lead its target and followed the link in the answer to stack overflow. In the stack overflow page I used the 2nd answer, the one that is a large mathematical derivation. My situation is a little different though. My first question though is will the answer provided in the stack overflow page even work to begin with, assuming the original circumstances of moving target and stationary shooter. My situation is a little different than that situation. My target moves, the shooter moves, and the bullets from the shooter start off with the velocities in x and y added to the bullets' x and y velocities. If you are sliding to the right, the bullets will remain in front of you as you move so as long as your velocity remains constant. What I'm trying to do is to get the enemy to be able to determine where they need to shoot in order to hit the player. Unless the player and enemy is stationary, the velocity from the ship adding to the velocity of the bullets will cause a miss. I'd rather like to prevent that. I used the formula in the stack overflow answer and did what I thought were the appropriate adjustments. I've been banging at this for the last four hours and I just can't make it click. It is probably something really simple and boneheaded that I am missing (that seems to be a lot of my problems lately). Here is the solution presented from the stack overflow answer: It boils down to solving a quadratic equation of the form: a * sqr(x) + b * x + c == 0 Note that by sqr I mean square, as opposed to square root. Use the following values: a := sqr(target.velocityX) + sqr(target.velocityY) - sqr(projectile_speed) b := 2 * (target.velocityX * (target.startX - cannon.X) + target.velocityY * (target.startY - cannon.Y)) c := sqr(target.startX - cannon.X) + sqr(target.startY - cannon.Y) Now we can look at the discriminant to determine if we have a possible solution. disc := sqr(b) - 4 * a * c If the discriminant is less than 0, forget about hitting your target -- your projectile can never get there in time. Otherwise, look at two candidate solutions: t1 := (-b + sqrt(disc)) / (2 * a) t2 := (-b - sqrt(disc)) / (2 * a) Note that if disc == 0 then t1 and t2 are equal. If there are no other considerations such as intervening obstacles, simply choose the smaller positive value. (Negative t values would require firing backward in time to use!) Substitute the chosen t value back into the target's position equations to get the coordinates of the leading point you should be aiming at: aim.X := t * target.velocityX + target.startX aim.Y := t * target.velocityY + target.startY Here is my code, after being corrected by Sam Hocevar (thank you again for your help!). It still doesn't work. For some reason it never enters the section of code inside the if(disc = 0) (obviously because it is always less than zero but...). However, if I plug the numbers from my game log on the enemy and player positions and velocities it outputs a valid firing solution. I have looked at the code side by side a couple of times now and I can't find any differences. There has got to be something simple I'm missing here. If someone else could look at this code and determine what is going on here I'd appreciate it. I know it's not going through that section because if it were, shouldShoot would become true and the enemy would be blasting away at the player. This section calls the function in question, CalculateShootHeading() if(shouldMove) { UseEngines(); } x += xVelocity; y += yVelocity; CalculateShootHeading(); if(shouldShoot) { ShootWeapons(); } UpdateWeapons(); This is CalculateShootHeading(). This is inside the enemy class so x and y are the enemy's x and y and the same with velocity. One output from my game log gives Player X = 2108, Player Y = -180.956, Player X velocity = 10.9949, Player Y Velocity = -6.26017, Enemy X = 1988.31, Enemy Y = -339.051, Enemy X velocity = 1.81666, Enemy Y velocity = -9.67762, 0 enemy projectiles. The output from the console tester is Bullet position = 2210.49, -239.313 and Player Position = 2210.49, -239.313. This doesn't make any sense. • Why should I learn vi/vim/emacs? [on hold]

  I hear all the flame wars about vi/vim and emacs and which is better etc but honestly, I just use sublime. When I have to edit from the CLI I use nano (it's simpler to use). I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Should I put the time/effort into learning one of those text-editors thoroughly, and if so... why? What is it about these two editors that evokes so much adoration and devotion? Why would I want to use any of them over my nice, multi-caret, GUI text editor?

• error:unknown filesystem grub rescue help

  I'm trying to install ubuntu on my hdd which doesnt contain any operatin system, mbr or grub. (it has 3 partitions, 1st includes my data on ntfs file system, second is linux swap now, and third ex4 filesystem) Of course i don't want to lose my data on ntfs partition. Anyway i installed ubuntu on ex4 filesystem, selected sda as device for bootloader (not sda1,2 or 2). But i got error Error:unknown filesystem Grub rescue I tried ls command. It gives (hd0) , (hd,msdos1), (hd0,msdos2) and (hd0,msdos3). then tried ls (hd0)/, ls (hd0,1)/, ls (hd0,msdos2)/, ls (hd0,msdos3)/ to find the linux filesystem to boot. But i was unsuccessful. it all gave me unknown filesystem error. Am i missing or something?

  I'm trying to make an object rotate up on the Y axis 90 degrees, then stop. I've got the rotating up bit working fine, it's getting it to stop once it hits 90. • Google Analytics doesn't show the correct landing page for my Facebookd ads

  Most of the visitors to my site are supposed to come from external link with URL my-seite.com/en/var from Facebook ads but Google Analytics shows that most of the landing page is my-site.com/var without en which is the prefix for English version of my site. Am I missing something to configure Google Analytics ? or Facebook has sending the visitors to the wrong URL (by the preview page of the Facebbok ads the URL is set correct with the prefix en)? Any advise are appreciated. Thanks.
