  • Empty R environment becomes large file when saved

    - by user1052019
I'm getting behaviour I don't understand when saving environments. The code below demonstrates the problem. I would have expected the two files (far-too-big.RData, and right-size.RData) to be the same size, and also very small because the environments they contain are empty. In fact, far-too-big.R ends up the same size as bigfile.RData. I get the same results using 2.14.1 and 2.15.2, both on WinXP 5.1 SP3. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Thanks. a <- matrix(runif(1000000, 0, 1), ncol=1000) save(a, file="c:/temp/bigfile.RData") test <- function() { load("c:/temp/bigfile.RData") test <- new.env() save(test, file="c:/temp/far-too-big.RData") test1 <- new.env(parent=globalenv()) save(test1, file="c:/temp/right-size.RData") } test()

  • Rails: How to have dynamic association

    - by Aaron Dufall
I'll use an example to explain what behaviour I would like to achieve. If you had a project management app and you added a task, but not all the contributors are users of the app. So when you adding contributors to the task you can enter a user name or email address. Here is the part that I'm finding a little tricky. The task model has many contributors which are linked through the user model, but from this point on I want to achieve 2 things. Store the non members email(this would obviously be quite simple) If that email address was to create an account it would then link that user to the task and remove the temporally saved email. This way, when that user creates an account all the related tasks will already be associated with their email. Is this something that i could achieve with a polymorphic association? or is there something else I should be looking at?

  • .net c# datagridview populating with non database data/setup

    - by flavour404
Hi, I have never used the datagridview in any other scenario other than one where it is populating by a database so suddenly my mind goes blank... I have 10 tubes, each with 8 vertical positions within it, so I have a 10 by 8 grid basically. Each has of those slots has (or not) an image in a folder. How do I get a datagridview to reflect this information, draw a grid, check the folder and if the image exists paint it white, and if not paint it red? Sorry it if sounds a little odd, thanks, R.

  • Replace the callback for a GtkItem created from a GtkItemFactoryEntry

    - by rampion
I'm writing a plugin that's modifying an existing UI. One thing I want to do is change what an existing menu item does. This is all using the Gtk library. The menu item (a GtkItem) is created from a GtkItemFactoryEntry (which is out of my control), and has its current behaviour defined by the callback in the GtkItemFactoryEntry. I can get handle on the menu item using gtk_item_factory_get_widget() and attach further actions to the menu item using gtk_signal_connect(), but I can't seem to disconnect the original callback using gtk_signal_disconnect() or gtk_signal_disconnect_by_func(). Is there any way I can remove or replace the original callback?

  • Call a non member function on an instance before is constructed.

    - by Tom
Hi everyone. I'm writing a class, and this doubt came up. Is this undef. behaviour? On the other hand, I'm not sure its recommended, or if its a good practice. Is it one if I ensure no exceptions to be thrown in the init function? //c.h class C{ float vx,vy; friend void init(C& c); public: C(); }; //c.cpp C::C() { init(*this); } void init(C& c) //throws() to ensure no exceptions ? { c.vx = 0; c.vy = 0; } Thanks in advance

  • How do you get GWT 2.0 to accept clicks on two different Widgets added to a LayoutPanel?

    - by kerrr
Using GWT 2.0 I have an entry point that adds two Widgets to a LayoutPanel. The Widgets both handle click events and have click events ergistered to them. The problem is that only the last widget added to the LayoutPanel can actually be clicked. Switch the order in which the widgets are added switches the widget that works. Add mroe widgets and still the only you can click is the last one added to the LayoutPanel. Any idea why this is? Is there any reasoning behind the behaviour, or have I missunderstood what is happening under the covers? How do I gat all widgets in the LayoutPanel to accept events? Should I be using another panel class? I'm not too bothered if the LayoutPanel prevents anything below it from being clicked, but want all Widgets added to it to be clickable.

  • How can I create a profiler GUI in WPF?

    - by thehan
I am looking to create a task profiler in WPF with an UI similar to the one of incredibuild. Eg, timed tasks appear as strips on their respective line. Have a look at: http://baoz.net/wp-content/2009/06/ib1.png to see what I mean. I am unsure what the best way to tackle this problem is? Should I override the Panel class creating a custom layout panel for this or might there be an existing control/library out there that can fit my needs. I have so far had a look at various charting controls but am unsure of weither they can be tweaked to achieve this behaviour or not. I am really hoping for someone who has been using WPF for a while to help me narrow down my search. It is not exactly easy to know what to google for either :)

  • Can nohup change the result of a C++ code?

    - by Biga
I am having this very weird behaviour with a C++ code: It gives me different results when running with and without 'nohup' (reproducible in cygwin and linux). I mean, if I get the same executable and run it like './run' or run it like 'nohup ./run out.log', I get different results! I use std::cout to output to screen, all lines ending with endl; I use ifstream for the input file; I use ofstream for output, all lines ending with endl. I am using g++ 4. Any idea what is going on?

  • .NET CF 2.0: Stream implements IDisposable ... kind of?

    - by mvanbem
I've run into something odd in a .NET CF 2.0 project for Pocket PC 2003 (Visual Studio 2005). I was dealing with a System.IO.Stream object and found that the IDE wouldn't auto-complete the Dispose() method. I typed it in manually and received: 'System.IO.Stream.Dispose(bool)' is inaccessible due to its protection level The error is referring to the protected Dispose(bool) method. Dispose() is either private or not present. Question 1: How is this possible? Stream implements IDisposable: public abstract class Stream : MarshalByRefObject, IDisposable ... and IDisposable requires a Dispose() method: public interface IDisposable { void Dispose(); } I know the compiler won't let me get away with that in my code. Question 2: Will I cause problems by working around and disposing my streams directly? IDisposable idisp = someStream; idisp.Dispose(); The implicit cast is accepted by the compiler.

  • width:auto for <input> fields

    - by richb
Newbie CSS question. I thought 'width:auto' for a display:block element meant 'fill available space'. However for an <input> element this doesn't seem to be the case. For example: <body> <form style='background-color:red'> <input type='text' style='background-color:green;display:block;width:auto'> </form> </body> Two questions then: Is there a definition of exactly what width:auto does mean? The CSS spec seems vague to me, but maybe I missed the relevant section. Is there a way to achieve my expected behaviour for a input field - ie. fill available space like other block level elements do? Thanks!

  • How can I implement log4j logging to an existing J2EE Struts web application?

    - by Ruepen
I have recently inherited a J2EE Struts web app that was written back in 2002. There is no logging in the application other than the odd System.out.println(). I have added log4j logging so that I can write out some info to the console, but I'm concerned on how best to approach this. Any suggestions, tips, best practices would be welcome as I don't want to spend too much time adding logging to every method or class (or trying to find what places where logging would be best - ie. bad code blocks/defects). My current approach is to just add some logging to the few classes that I have been looking at to understand the code, but are there a few key places where I can add logging to maximize my use of adding log4j?

  • Can a thread call wait() on two locks at once in Java (6)

    - by Dr. Monkey
I've just been messing around with threads in Java to get my head around them (it seems like the best way to do so) and now understand what's going on with synchronize, wait() and notify(). I'm curious about whether there's a way to wait() on two resources at once. I think the following won't quite do what I'm thinking of: synchronized(token1) { synchronized(token2) { token1.wait(); token2.wait(); //won't run until token1 is returned System.out.println("I got both tokens back"); } } In this (very contrived) case token2 will be held until token1 is returned, then token1 will be held until token2 is returned. The goal is to release both token1 and token2, then resume when both are available (note that moving the token1.wait() outside the inner synchronized loop is not what I'm getting at). A loop checking whether both are available might be more appropriate to achieve this behaviour (would this be getting near the idea of double-check locking?), but would use up extra resources - I'm not after a definitive solution since this is just to satisfy my curiosity.

  • Abort early in a fold

    - by Heptic
What's the best way to terminate a fold early? As a simplified example, imagine I want to sum up the numbers in an Iterable, but if I encounter something I'm not expecting (say an odd number) I might want to terminate. This is a first approximation def sumEvenNumbers(nums: Iterable[Int]): Option[Int] = { nums.foldLeft (Some(0): Option[Int]) { case (None, _) => None case (Some(s), n) if n % 2 == 0 => Some(s + n) case (Some(_), _) => None } } However, this solution is pretty ugly (as in, if I did a .foreach and a return -- it'd be much cleaner and clearer) and worst of all, it traverses the entire iterable even if it encounters a non-even number. So what would be the best way to write a fold like this, that terminates early? Should I just go and write this recursively, or is there a more accepted way?

  • Help moving multiple images at once with touches

    - by daveMac
    Here is my problem: I am trying to move a puzzle piece around the screen and then connect to the other piece if they are in close proximity. I have achieved this, though it is perhaps a little odd the way I did. My problem though is that once they have connected, I can't figure out how to move them as one image, instead of two separate entities. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions. Here is a sample of what I have been doing: (void)touchesMovedNSSet *)touches withEventUIEvent *)event{ UITouch *touch = [touches anyObject]; [self dispatchTouchEvent:[touch view] toPosition:[touch locationInView:self.view]]; } -(void)dispatchTouchEventUIView *)theView toPositionCGPoint)position{ if ((CGRectContainsPoint([picture frame], position))) { picture.center = position; } if (CGRectContainsPoint([picture2 frame], position)) { picture2.center = position; } }

  • Mercurial - Files nog showing on server (ls command)

    - by Bumbolt
I'm trying to setup a java buildserver with jenkins, maven and mercurial. Now my mercurial server is working i can push, pull and commit. Running the command 'hg serve' on the server allows me to see commits from my clients. But when i go manually into the repository (cd in server-terminal) and do an 'ls' command i can't see any file. When i clone the repository onto a new client i DO recieve the files pushed by the other clients. This is somewhat strange behaviour. Does anyone recognize this? What should i do to fix this?

  • Simple haskell splitlist

    - by js7354
I have the following function which takes a list and returns two sublists split at a given element n. However, I only need to split it in half, with odd length lists having a larger first sublist splitlist :: [a] -> Int -> ([a],[a]) splitlist [] = ([],[]) splitlist l@(x : xs) n | n > 0 = (x : ys, zs) | otherwise = (l, []) where (ys,zs) = splitlist xs (n - 1) I know I need to change the signature to [a] - ([a],[a]), but where in the code should I put something like length(xs) so that I don't break recursion? Thank you.

  • MessageBox not shown when opened processing WM_CLOSE from taskbar thumbnail close button

    - by Katana
Trying to put up a "Do you want to save"-dialog when trying to close window with close-button in taskbar thumbnail in windows 7(with aero peek active). Using MessageBox() when processing WM_CLOSE does not work. MessageBox won't show until you move mouse cursor outside thumbnail so aero peek is disabled. Lots of applications have this buggy behaviour so it's probably a design flaw in Windows 7, but for some programs it works (Word, Notepad, Visual Studio, ...), so I'm wondering what trick they are using(or what it takes to "exit" aero peek-mode programmatically). The small "Sound Recorder" application that comes with Windows 7 has the same problem (if you have recorded something without saving and try to close it using thumbnail close-button)...

What would be the cause for this behaviour. is any other script changing the value of iframe height in between ? Help me

  • Commonly use Utility methods in projects

    - by Newbie
In many projects, we come across various utility methods, e.g. Email validation Convert from dd/mm/yyyy to mm/dd/yyyy or other date formats I would like to know as what are the varoius common utility method that we genrally use? I know that some methods are project specific but many will be common. I searched in net to get a list of as much as possible but none I found to be very informative. Could you please help? Well I am more interested in the method behaviour and not in their implementation. If I can get the method names and what it does e.g. ConvertMMDDYYYY to ConvertDDMMYYYY it will server my purpose. Thanks

  • variable scope in statement blocks

    - by fearofawhackplanet
for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Foo(); } int i = 10; // error, 'i' already exists ---------------------------------------- for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { Foo(); } i = 10; // error, 'i' doesn't exist By my understanding of scope, the first example should be fine. The fact neither of them are allowed seems even more odd. Surely 'i' is either in scope or not. Is there something non-obvious about scope I don't understand which means the compiler genuinely can't resolve this? Or is just a case of nanny-state compilerism?

  • How do i Convert a Select to a Checkbox

  • How do i get (is it possible to) a reference to the class that creates an instance of another class.

    - by Cadde
Odd situation... I need to create a new instance of a class that needs a member of the calling class. But i can't pass a reference to the calling class through the constructor. The solution i am looking for is something like this: Public Class ChildClass Public Sub New(args) _MyMember = GetMemberFromCallingClass() ... ... End Sub End Class I want this to work without having to manually pass any references or variables from the calling class to the new instance of ChildClass. Is this possible and if so, what should i look at to make this part of my code.

  • How to map one class against multiple tables with SQLAlchemy?

    - by tote
    Lets say that I have a database structure with three tables that look like this: items - item_id - item_handle attributes - attribute_id - attribute_name item_attributes - item_attribute_id - item_id - attribute_id - attribute_value I would like to be able to do this in SQLAlchemy: item = Item('item1') item.foo = 'bar' session.add(item) session.commit() item1 = session.query(Item).filter_by(handle='item1').one() print item1.foo # => 'bar' I'm new to SQLAlchemy and I found this in the documentation (http://www.sqlalchemy.org/docs/05/mappers.html#mapping-a-class-against-multiple-tables): j = join(items, item_attributes, items.c.item_id == item_attributes.c.item_id). \ join(attributes, item_attributes.c.attribute_id == attributes.c.attribute_id) mapper(Item, j, properties={ 'item_id': [items.c.item_id, item_attributes.c.item_id], 'attribute_id': [item_attributes.c.attribute_id, attributes.c.attribute_id], }) It only adds item_id and attribute_id to Item and its not possible to add attributes to Item object. Is what I'm trying to achieve possible with SQLAlchemy? Is there a better way to structure the database to get the same behaviour of "dynamic columns"?

  • Email delivery failure - bounceback address

    - by user808532
I've been looking for documentation on the standard behaviour for mail servers who fail to deliver their mail. I want the 'From' field to be different from the account that receives emails when there is a delivery failure. E.g. My program sends an email from '[email protected]', and on failure to deliver I want to be sent the delivery failure bounceback at '[email protected]'. Is this accomplished by setting the reply-to? Or should I login with the 'failedemails' account and therefore it will receive the email back? Thanks.

  • Dividing n-bit binary integers

    - by Julian
Was wondering if anyone could help me with creating a pseudocode for how to go about dividing n-bit binary integers. Here is what I'm thinking could possibly work right now, could someone correct this if I'm wrong: divide (x,y) if x=0: return (0,0) //(quotient, remainder) (q,r) = divide(floor(x/2), y) q=2q, r=2r if x is odd: r = r+1 if r >= y: r = r-y, q = q+1 return (q,r) Would you guys say that this general pseudocode algorithm would accomplish the intended task of dividing n-bit numbers or am I missing something in my psuedocode before I start coding up something that's wrong?
