• Convert Custom Firefox Setup to Firefox Portable?

  I have a pretty awesome firefox set up and spent a lot of time getting it perfect. Is there any way that anyone knows about to convert the entire configuration to portable? Programs like MozBackup are great for backing up the complete set up, but you can't restore a Firefox profile to Firefox portable (maybe there is a workaround to fake it out? or possibly another method?) In case anyone is interested here is the gist of the best add-ons I've found: Autopager (scroll down google and other multi page results without clicking next) Coral IE Tab (IE in firefox - in case a website 'insists' that you use IE) Cyber search (search google straight from the address bar - VERY HELPFUL) Download StatusBar (display progress of downloads in the bottom of ff - no annoying popups FireFTP (erases need for an external FTP client - opens in a tab) Gmail manager (if you use multiple gmail accounts) Session Manager (saving multiple sessions of tabs - ff session recover) Surf Canyon (pull relevant stuff out of the depths of search results - even from craigslist Tab Mix Plus (ESSENTIAL - tab behavior customization - have multiple rows of tabs I also have it set up so you can type 'g test' in the address bar and ff will pull up the google results for 'test'. Similarly have it set up for guitar tabs (tab), facebook (f), wikipedia (w), google maps from my house (gmhome), torrents (tor), ticketmaster (t), rotten tomatoes (rt), craiglist (c) plus about 20 other sites.

• SSH error 114 when connect with FinalBuilder 7

  I'm testing FB 7 and try to connect to my Mac OS X Snow Leopard machine. I can connect with paramiko (python SSH library) but not FB7. • Cannot run "Automation Anywhere" exe files from console (session 0) on Windows Server 2003 64 bit

  I have a simple exe created from an Automation Anywhere task that displays a message box saying hello world. I created this simple exe just for debugging the following issue. When I log in to the console (session 0), and run the Automation Anywhere created executable, it starts to run the task, it shows up in the applications and processes list in the task manager and it shows the two "loading..." windows briefly on the screen, just like normal. But after that, nothing happens... the "hello world" message does not show up. The exe is done and is removed from the application and process list in the task manager. The user I am logged in as, has admin rights and the machine uses "autologin" to automatically log in using this profile when it starts up. If I right click on the exe and "run as" another admin user, the exe runs properly, showing the "hello world" message. Also, if I log into the server in a new session, with the original user (the one that has the problems in session 0), and then run the exe, it runs properly and shows the "hello world". It works fine in any session other than the console session. There is something about the console session that is causing the exe not to run properly... even though it does appear to start running the exe. I should also mention that everything was working fine until Monday at midnight, after which none of the executables could be run successfully. Nothing was changed on the server and no updates were installed. I have since installed windows updates, but that didn't change anything. Looking for some advice on how to get these executables working in the console session again. Thanks!

• VsFTPd - pam_mkhomedir

  I am trying to set up a FTP server that authenticates against an LDAP server. This part is done and works. My server is VsFTPd on Ubuntu Server 11.04. But I have to create the home directories for my LDAP users. I am trying to user the pam_mkhomedir module but it is not working: when I add its line to the /etc/pam.d/vsftpd file, my users can not login anymore to the FTP server. The problem is that I have very few information on what is wrong. VsFTPd just responds 530: login incorrect and I could not find a way to get debug or error messages from pam_mkhomedir. Here are my different configuration files. • Drive XML returning Windows Volume Shadow Service Error

  I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?

• Open Office crashes, recovers, crashes again

  After completely reinstalling my laptop due to apparent registry corruption, I've encountered a problem with Open Office: I open a simple Calc spreadsheet, it comes up normally, but then after anywhere from 5 seconds to several minutes (without even touching the Calc window) OO crashes, then comes up through recovery. If I let it "recover" it will do so and bring the spreadsheet up again, only to repeat the crash scenario again. If I kept clicking "OK" it would apparently do this all day. I reinstalled OO once and the problem went away for awhile, but it came back. I then attempted to "reset" my profile (ie, rename the OO user directory in App Data), but OO crashed during the first startup after that, then resumed the original behavior. If I open the same file using Excel it complains of errors in the file, and "recovers" them, but the "error report" it generates contains no details. If I save the "recovered" file then OO Calc will open it, but the problem returns after saving again. Any ideas? (The system is Vista SP2, running OO 3.4.1) How to reproduce: Start Open Office Calc. Save workspace as "CrashTest.ods" From Task Manager kill Open Office (soffice.exe/bin -- one of each) Double click on the saved "CrashTest.ods" in Explorer. OO puts up a message that recovery will occur -- allow it. When the Calc window comes up, don't touch it -- just wait about 10 seconds. Calc window closes and OO puts up a message that recovery will occur -- from now on the sequence will repeat. I suspect this behavior is limited to a few (recent) versions of OO, and very possibly only Calc. Reported as Open Office Bug 1211094. Sigh!! As much as it irritates me, I'm having to switch over to Excel for several things I used to do with Calc. Excel has a miserable UI, but at least it says up for longer than 10 seconds.

• TomTom GO & Ubuntu Linux: impersonating a GPRS phone with dund

  Background: I've called TomTom support, and they don't support Linux. I can get my GO 730 to mount Mass Storage, and I found a shell script that will allow me to install maps (haven't tried it; will update when I do.). As of note: USB 2.0 only. 1.1 ports will not work. However--I still can't update the TomTom or take advantage of any traffic services. The GO will connect to a mobile phone, but I don't have one that supports tethering. However, I've found a site that claims to know a way to get a Linux Machine to impersonate a phone advertising GPRS services and it apparently works in Fedora as old as FC4. I'm having some serious trouble getting this to work on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, mainly because I think some of the built-in bluetooth stuff is getting in the way. Changing the class bits in main.conf (hcid.conf does not exist) doesn't crash..., and dund starts and listens, but the TomTom device never seems to want to connect to my machine. I haven't played around much with sdcptool (I think that's the name, not in front of a Linux machine right now) but maybe I have to advertise the DUN profile...I'm not very sure. My Question: I have no way to diagnose the problems. What are some diagnostic tools I can use to help dig down and figure out what's going on? Update: apparently dund is a legacy tool that's going away. What replaces it?

• Word documents very slow to open over network, but fine when opened locally - on one machine

  Windows XP, Word 2003, patched. The issue is happening with several Word documents stored on a network drive. The Word documents are clearly a bit wonky (i.e. one is 675k, but if you copy everything but the last paragraph marker into a new document, the new document is only 30k). But that's only part of the problem. On one weird machine, and one machine only, it takes ~20 seconds to open these Word documents from the network drive. Copy the file to C: on that werid machine? Opens immediately. Go to other machines (that are very similar - same patch level, etc.) and open the same document from the network? Opens immediately. Delete normal.dot? 20 seconds. Login with a different user on the weird machine? 20 seconds. Plug wonky machine into a different network port? 20 seconds. So the problem appears to be hardware related (i.e. wonky internal NIC) or related to a setting that is not profile specific. Any ideas? "Scrubbing" all the documents isn't ideal for several reasons. This is driving me nuts because I swear I ran into this before many years ago and eventually figured it out. But I appear to have lost my notes.

• Low CPU performance with low usage and clock - Windows 8.1

  I recently deleted everything from my PC and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from scratch. When I first booted into Windows everything was extremely slow though the CPU usage was very low (about 1%). After installing some drivers the problem seemed to be solved, I was able to use my PC normally. Today I installed a game and I noticed a strange behavior: the game was playable but the performance worsened more and more in the time. This is the situation BEFORE opening the game (normal): This is AFTER some minutes inside the game (low CPU usage and clock): Some information about my system: PC: Sony Vaio S13 (SVS13A1C5E) OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Intel Core i7-3520M 2.90GHz GPU(1): Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU(2): NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE I tried searching for new drivers and other solutions but noting worked and I don't know what is the cause. I did not checked the temperatures but the fans are not running fast and the PC does not look overheated. Update: Max CPU Temp: 66°C, Max GPU Temp: 61°C The strange thing is that the GPU load is 99% (GPU-Z) and the fan is almost silent. Update 2: I had troubles with Sony Vaio software, I can't get the FN keys and the STAMINA/SPEED switch to work (it is a physical switch to enable/disable the Nvidia card and change the Power Profile). I'm saying this because I remember that before reinstalling Windows there was an option in the Vaio Control Center (now it is not there anymore) that allowed me to choose from something like "priority to performance (ventilation)" or "priority to silence". The current behavior looks like a "priority to silence", but I can't get the stamina-speed switch to work and so I don't see similar oprions in the Vaio Control Center. I don't know if the problem is related to this.

• Can't start Bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04 + Plesk 10.1 - "named: no process found"

  I've installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, I didn't install bind when choosing what packages should be installed in the Ubuntu installer. I downloaded the auto installer for Plesk 10.1 and installed it successfully. When I logged into the Plesk control panel and tried to change the password, it failed because it couldn't restart bind. • Network monitoring tools with API features

  We use ks-soft's Advanced Hostmonitor package to monitor around 2000 items on our network. We think it's great, the chap that supports it is fantastic, the product is fast, stable and mature but I feel as as we grow as a company it's beginning to show some friction points in the area of integration with our back office admin systems. One of the things we'd like to do is be able to add new tests to whatever monitoring tool we use via an API. For example, when orders for servers come from our retail interface, the server gets built automatically, and as part of the automated build process we'd like to automatically add new tests to the network monitoring systems. Hostmonitor has some support for this via a feature called HM Script but we're starting to encounter some speedbumps - we can't add new operators/users we can't define new "Action Profiles" - these are the actions to be taken when a test goes good or bad. What we love about hostmonitor though are the Action Profiles. For example if a Windows IIS box goes bad our action profile for a bad test does something like: Check host again (one time) Wait another 30 seconds then test again Try restart app pool on remote machine (up to two times) Send an email to ops about the restart failure Try restarting IIS on remote machine (up to four times) Page duty admin (up to 5 times - stops after duty admin ACKS alert) Page backup duty admin (5 times - stops after duty admin ACKS alert) I'm starting to look around at other network monitoring tools and I'm looking for: a comprehensive API to be able to add/remove/control tests/test "action profiles"/operators (not just plugins, we need control and admin interfaces) the ability to have quite detailed action/escalation profiles (and define these via an API) I've looked at Nagios and Icinga but Ican't seem to glean from their documentation whether we could have these features or not, or if we could, how much work would be involved to implement/customise. Can anyone provide any advice, guidance or experiences?

  Ah, confusion. I'm trying to install a python library called lxml as needed by a python script. I've been through numerous SU quesitons and answers. I haven't been able to make much progress. (Which is 2.6.1) In Library/, there is: which are the lxml libaries I need, it appears, as well as requests. And whereis python gives me /usr/bin/python What do I do? How do I get python to use these libraries. And which python?

  Hi, I have a phpBB site running with Nginx (PHP via FastCGI). It works OK. However, some specific actions like moving or deleting a topic fail. Instead, I'm redirected to the forum index. I think it is a problem with the URLs redirection or rewriting. • Windows 7, network connection with no default gateway: any way to change the "Unknown network" statu

  Hi, I have a computer running Windows 7 Pro RTM. This computer has two network connections: A Wi-fi connection to the Internet (through a home router) which works just fine. An OpenVPN virtual network connection. More precisely, this is a virtual Ethernet connection which behaves exactly like a physical Ethernet wired connection. My problem is that the "Network and sharing center" shows "Unknown network" for the OpenVPN connection. After some research I found that logical networks (outside a domain) are identified by the MAC address of the default gateway of the connection. Problem is, the OpenVPN connection has no default gateway: it is a private network, so I don't need one... Consequently, the "Unknown network" is always considered public, so the firewall is always in "public mode", which I don't want. Plus, I can't rename "Unknown connection" or anything (which makes sense), so it is kinda ugly. My goal is to define a proper logical network for the OpenVPN connection with the private profile. I know of some workarounds (disable the firewall, modify security policy to make all unknown networks "private") but they're still workarounds. I just want my clients to connect to the VPN without having to disable their firewall settings, without changing global configuration with potential side-effects (the "security policy" solution) and without having to look at an ugly "Unknown connection" in the Network and sharing center. Is there any way I can do this? I tried to check what was going on in the registry (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList is interesting), but I still didn't find a way to "force" the OpenVPN connection to be assigned to a logical network.   At work I am forced by corporate policy to use IE6. Obviously this is not so good so I use FF for most of my browsing. However there is a problem once I have installed the Flash plug-in - FF locks up when trying to load Flash media. Looking at the status bar at the time of the lock up it appears this happens when the browser tries to get cross domain data. The Flash Active X plug-in in IE does not suffer this issue. I have tried it in a brand new profile in FF with Flash as the only plug in and it locks up. We have 2 different proxy servers and both exhibit the same problem. I have also tried Chrome and Safari and both lock up with the plug-in installed. So, has anyone else had this problem and solved it? Or, is there any way to disable cross domain data access in the flash plug-in? Or, is there any way to disable the "This site needs an additional plug-in" ribbon which appears when the plug-in is not installed. Many thanks!

• Outlook slow to open attachments

  When a colleague tries to open attachments in her email (Outlook 2003 talking to an Exchange 2007 server) they talk ages to open. The files are relatively small, all less than 1MB. We've tried creating a new Windows profile for the user and tried creating new Outlook profiles, however that hasn't made any difference. And we've tried accessing her account from someone else's PC, and the attachments open immediately there. The only thing that might provide a clue is that Process Monitor shows Outlook on her PC trying to write the file to a folder within the user's "Temporary Internet Files" folder with FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors. Can't find a lot of useful information on that message online though. What causes the FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors? And would that make opening attachments so incredibly slow that opening a < 1MB file can take a matter of minutes? UPDATE: Discovered that this isn't just an issue with Outlook. Other files being accessed over the network show the same FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors in Process Monitor. The problem is just more noticeable with Outlook, because although other applications take a while to open files it isn't a matter of minutes.

• Active Directory Domain Services - Network Name Cannot be Found

  I have really weird problem that I could not explain. I am trying to redirect all users home folder to the new server. I have copied all the files including the permissions to the new server. All I need to do is to update the user profile for home folder by changing the server name. However, I got this message when I enter the new server name: My server that serving as AD can resolve the name by ping and nslookup of the server name. The only thing that I don't understand why the MMC cannot resolve the name. I did change with the IP Address and I still get the same error message. Thank you so much for your help. UPDATE: I know what seems to be a problem, but I don't know how to fix it. The new server that will serve all Home folder is actually sitting in the cloud with different IP Address as the Domain Controller. The Domain Controller is sitting locally in the office with 10.0.0.0/24 IP Addresses. The new server that is sitting in on Data Centre is on 172.10.10.10/24 IP Addresses. The static route has been set up on both end, and the DNS as well. I believe this is the issue. Does anyone how to overcome this situation? Thank you.

• Server cost for smartphone app with web service

  Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!

• How can I erase the traces of Folder Redirection from the Default Domain Policy

  I've taken over from an IT outsourcer and have found a struggle now that we're starting a migration to windows 7. Someone decided that they would setup Folder redirection in the Default Domain Policy. I've since configured redirection in another policy at an OU level. No matter what I do, the windows 7 systems pick up the Default Domain Policy folder redirection settings only. I keep getting entries in the event log showing that the previously redirected folders "need to be redirected" with a status of 0x80000004. From what I can tell this just means that it's redirecting them locally. Is there a way I can wipe that section of the GPO clean so it's no longer there? I'm hesitant to try to reset the default domain policy to complete defaults. ***UPDATE 6-26 I found that the following condition occurred and was causing the grief here. I've already implemented the new policies for clients, and for some reason, XP was working great, 7 was refusing to process. The DDP was enforced. Because of this, and the fact that the folder redirection policies were set to redirect back to the local profile upon removal, it was forcing clients to pick up it's "redirect to local" settings. Requirements for to recreate the issue. -Create a new test OU and policy. -Create some folder redirection settings, set them to redirect to local upon removal -Remove settings on that GPO -Refresh your view of the GPO and check the settings. -You'll notice that the settings show "not configured" entries for folder redirection. -Enforce this GPO -Create another sub-OU -Create a GPO linked to this sub-ou and configure some folder redirection settings. -Watch as the enforced GPOs "not configured" setting overrides the policy you just defined. I've had to relink the DDP to all OU's that have "block inheritance" enabled, and disable the "enforced" option on the DDP as a workaround. I'd love to re-enable enforcement of the DDP, but until I can erase the traces of folder redirection settings from the DDP, I think I'm stuck.

• How to use my computer as a Headset device for my phone with Bluetooth?

  I want to extract the audio from my phone (the analog TV and FM/AM receiver mainly) and play it through my computer speakers. There is a headphone jack but it is of non-standard size (probably a micro-jack) and I do not have access to a shop that sells that kind of equipment in my area so doing this with Bluetooth is the only solution I can foresee. Both my laptop and my phone support A2DP but for some reason the service (from the phone) does not show up while I add a new connection and the phone does not let me initiate a connection with any other profile except FTP (although it detects other services in the service list like A2DP and works perfectly fine with other profiles like DUN, HID, OPP, SSP if the connection is started through the computer). I am currently using the latest version of the Toshiba stack, I have tried using WIDCOMM but it refuses to install drivers for both the internal Bluetooth (which is a Broadcom device) and the USB Bluetooth that I use on my desktop. The standard Microsoft stack (generic driver) does install but it does not work with both of my devices as they do not detect any Bluetooth devices when scanning. With BlueSoleil (the default stack that came with the USB Bluetooth) I could set my device as "headset" instead of only "laptop/desktop", and this allowed both my phones to detect my laptop as a device they can use as a headset, but the problem with this stack was that only the older phone could actually connect to my laptop and that the internal Bluetooth could not be used. Basically, I want to set the device type as a "headset" for my phone using the Toshiba stack like I did with BlueSoleil. Is there any way this could be done? Thanks. • Can I edit the snapshots of websites on most visited sites page in Chrome?

  I saw the previous chain of discussion, but did not find a way to continue the thread - I have found the "Preference" (I have Windows 7), but in that, I did not find clearly what to modify. I did find a section called 'URLs pinned" or something like this, but it did NOT match fully the ones I have. I have activated the 'profile sync' for Chrome - don't know if it has any effect. Can you manually edit the icons of the most visited sites, for the new tab page in Chrome? When you open a new tab in Chrome, I get the 'new page' tab, where I selected the 'most popular', so I have 8 icons with the 8 most popular sites I visited; I can also pin any one of those I see on screen, such that they remain 'permanent' there. We are missing one which would point to, say, "hotmail". So, I was looking for a way to add 'hotmail' to be one of the 8. (and, by the way, we ticked the 'X' on one of those 8, and now it remains grey / shows nothing in it). So, my double-question: How can I add a URL of my choice into one of those 8 spaces? How can I restore usage of the last one?

• Is there a way to extract a "private certificate key" from Chrome and import it into Firefox ?

  This is a classical Catch-22 situation. I was using online banking the other day under Chrome. I had to order a digital certificate so that I could extend my privileges. The stupid thing is that when I got approved and opened the certificate installation menu, I saw only versions for IE/Firefox available. What the heck, I said, and chose FF - the result I got was Error 202 - ERR:CERT:INVALID. I opened FF, got to the same page, and tried to install the damn thing from there, but got a message basically saying that I must have been given a private key which obviously FF doesn't find. I read a bit, and it turned out that I really must have been given such a key but only to the browser that I ordered the cert with, i.e. Chrome. The worst thing is that if I deactivate my order, and reissue a new cert, this time from FF, I MUST go to a bank office (!!!WTF), but I am currently studying abroad, so I can't just go back. Is there a way, that I could extract that key from Chrome's profile, and import it into FF under Windows ? I will be glad to know

• Is 30 calls / second a lot for one IIS server?

  We have a RIA application that 300 clients concurrently use in an intranet environment. Together they make 30 calls / second to IIS (asp.net) (actually it's 60 but calls are loadbalanced over two IIS servers). Half of the calls is getting an asset (Caching Profile is used so most of the time cache is hit), the other half is saving data to a sql server. Retrieving an asset is done with a aspx page. Saving the data happens via WebORB, asp.net and Sql Server. So some processing is needed by WebORB (amf decoding, GZIP, ...). We also use Spring.NET, and some of the container objects have a request scope (not a lot). IIS servers -- Virtual machines, 4 CPU, 2 gb RAM. They are based on Windows 2008 x64 SP2 Enterprise Edition. Sql Server 2008 is used. Apparently CPU of both IIS serers is constantly around 60-70%. Now, my question, is the load of 60-70% acceptable and how could we possible bring that down to less % (maybe using only one IIS server)? + Is 2 gb RAM enough? Assets can be up to 20mb, but on average, they are about 30kb. (the load of 60-70% is achieved with assets around 30kb). The data that gets saved with weborb is very small (2kb) and is just one object.
