  • How can I move windows in Windows with keyboard?

    I recently started using Linux and was floored by the ease with which windows can be moved and resized with simple keyboard combinations using Compiz. If I want to move a terminal to top-right of the screen a simple CTRL+ALT+Numpad9 does the trick for me, and it resizes the window at the same time. I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about. I would like to know if there is a way to do this in windows. Thanks.

  • How do I ask screen to behave like a standard bash shell?

    Just learned about the screen command on linux - it is genius. I love it. However, the actual terminal/prompt in screen looks and behaves differently than my standard bash prompt. That is, the colors aren't the same, tab completion doesn't seem to work, etc. Is there a way I can tell screen to behave just like a normal (at least, normal as in what I am used to) bash prompt ?

    I have a fresh install of Windows and a Linux OS that I can't access, how do I fix this? I do not have the .iso/disk for Linux anymore. So I figured, I can install Cygwin and through that install Grub, but I am used to Linux Mint, which uses apt-get. I have used CentOS before which uses rpm, but how do I install and use packages in the Cygwin terminal, and is it possible to install Grub through Cygwin?

However I have had a lot of difficulty installing it from the debian package, and by compiling it.   • cygwin åäö in emacs

    Hey I been bugging with this problem for some hours now. And I couldn't find the answer on google so I try it here. The problem is that when I run emacs in cygwin in -nw mode characters like åäö doesn't come out normally. However it is perfectly normal when I type those character in mintty terminal.   • Is it possible to prevent windows in Mac OS from opening below the bottom edge of the screen?

    When opening a new window in finder, the new window will go below the screen. This is not a big deal, but when using macvim or terminal it can be annoying since your command prompt is now hidden. Firefox seems to be smarter, it never overlaps below the screen. Same deal for the right hand side of the screen, windows often open with their right edge cut off. Is there any way to prevent this?

  • xmonad + urxvt issue: text disappears after resizing

    I'm using Arch Linux + xmonad + urxvt bundle and trying to resolve the conflict between xmonad and urxvt. Better to explain with shots: Firstly, open the terminal and get some full-length output. Secondly, create another window, which squeezes the first. And, finally, close it to find out that half of the output disappeared. Sometimes it behaves correctly, sometimes not.     I've got Chrome running on my Linux netbook, it's great and, unlike the Mac version, the 'Create Application Shortcut' option isn't greyed out. So I created one for Gmail. The 'applications' get stored at ~/.local/share/applications but I haven't managed to launch it yet. If I use Chrome in terminal $ google-chrome ~/.local/share/applications/google-application-reallylong-randomname.thing It opens the file in a new tab in Chrome and helpfully downloads it for me! Anyone got application shortcuts working in Linux?

  • Which version of emacs is best on Mac?

    On windows and ubuntu I just download the latest drops of emacs straight from the gun/fsf site, but they don't have Mac binaries there. I have a decent version that came with Snow Leopard, but just running in the bash terminal. Is there a version that runs in a standalone window and is more Mac friendly? I did try using ports, and downloaded one called emacs cocoa, but it didn't compile.

  • cygwin running commands with switches when ssh in

    When I SSH into a Windows 2008 R2 box and try to run a command with switches like /cygdrive/c/directory/Reports.exe /ReportID=1 /DateRange=LastWeek the command just hangs and never finishes. I can see the Reports.exe spawn a process under the user but never finishes. If I RDP into the box open cygwin terminal and run the exact command it works. Any reason why I can't run the command when I SSH in?

For example if I try git --version followed by entry keyboard typing, a blank line appear and wait until ever. If I type again the entry key on my keyboard the command line is again available but nothing appear. It's the same for all git function that I type.     I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. I'm a complete novice with programming and I'm trying to get started with this Ruby on Rails tutorial (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ruby-on-rails-tutorial-book?version=3.2) I have been trying figure this out for about 7 hours now and since I don't have any hair left to pull out I'm turning to these hallowed pages. I have searched for solutions here again and again. System: Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 I installed homebrew and have updated it multiple times I used homebrew to install rvm and have updated it multiple times I installed git The standard ruby on the system (checking with $ ruby -v) is 1.8.7 My problem is that every time I try to use rvm to install a new version of Ruby ($ rvm install 1.9.3) I get the following error: Ruby (and needed base gems) for your selection will be installed shortly.
