  • Can a programmer get too smart for their own good?

    - by P.Brian.Mackey
The more I learn about programming, the more things I see that could be improved by a great deal. Often, a companies process management is total SWAG or they have Frames based websites written recently, .NET 1.1 based code, no separation of concerns, poor quality control...I could go on and on and on... Projects can succeed, but there tends to be so much waste I am amazed at how much time and money a company can throw away. I've seen it happen at several companies. So is it that ignorance truly is bliss? UPDATE Question "How is it that top developers (I don't mean like Jon Skeet level, I mean guys who are dedicated enough to hit a forum and try for self-improvement) even want to code anymore after they see the often insurmountable sociological and technical problems they are told to fix, but then scolded for doing so? • Running 32-bit Firefox with sun-jre in 64-bit Ubuntu

    - by rojanu
I am trying to run juniper networks connect program to vpn into work and it only works on 32bit sun jre. All the things I have found with google failed so far. I can't use any scripts, like madscientists, as part of the authentication I need to provide some random characters from a grid. So to isolate this 32bit app install to a corner, I downloaded firefox and jre and unpack them to /opt. I run firefox with sudo as Juniper asks for root password. Here is Firefox plugins folder /ot/firefox32/plugins# ls -la total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 11 00:57 . drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Mar 10 23:48 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 Mar 11 00:57 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/32/jdk1.6.0_31/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so Firefox lists sun jre but when check it with "http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp" it either can't detect java or Firefox freezes Any Ideas? Thanks

  • IE6 Support - When to drop it? [closed]

    - by Scott Brown
Possible Duplicate: Should I bother supporting IE6? I'm thinking about IE6 support and when to give up on it. Do you have a percentage of total visitors figure in mind for when to drop support? Would you let a trend develop past this figure or are you just going take the first opportunity? I've seen a 44% drop in IE6 visitors in the past 12 months from 23%(ish) of visitors down to 13%(ish). Even if it was 5% it still seems too early to drop support to me (it's still 1 in every 20 users). What are people's thoughts on this?

  • Infrastructure and Platform As A Service in Private Cloud at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

    - by Anand Akela
Scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF)— the world’s largest laser, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)— need research environment that requires re-creating the physical environment and conditions that exist inside the sun. They have built private cloud infrastructure using Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c to provision such an environment for research.  Tim Frazier of LLNL joined the "Managing Your Private Cloud With Oracle Enterprise Manager' session at Oracle Open World 2012 and discussed how the latest features in Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c enables them to accelerate application provisioning in their private cloud. He also talked about how to increase service delivery agility, improve standardized roll outs, and do proactive management to gain total control of the private cloud environment. He also presented at the "Scene and Be Heard Theater" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and shared a lot of good information about his project and what they are doing in their private cloud environment. • How to mount a hidden NTFS WinRE which are on an external HDD

A friend have given me her external hard drive which contains a backup of his Windows data. The disk has two NTFS partitions, once of them tagged as WinRe. • Starting to make 2D games in C++

    - by Ashley
I'm fairly experienced with C and C#, but I've only ever created console/windows applications. I'm also experienced with AS3 and I've made some flash games. I want to make proper 2D games in C++, but I have no idea where to begin with graphics. There are entire books devoted to game development in C++ that only work with console applications and I'm finding the lack of resources and tutorials for proper 2D games frustrating... I'm also not particularly interested in using existing engines because I want total control of what I create. I've heard of the Allegro library; is it something important/popular that I should look into? How will I use DirectX? Any resources or links to tutorials or information is greatly appreciated.

  • How do I go about hosting facebook apps that are picking speed?

    - by Karthik
My situation is this. I coded in php and built a facebook app. After 3 days it has 13,000 users. I have my own server at hostmonster. It is a regular plan costing me about $70 per year. It has unlimited bandwidth. I did not anticipate hosting apps or that it could pick up so many users. Already 1 Gb of data was transferred in the last few days. I am planning to build a few more apps(around 10 - 20) and reach atleast a million users in total. Should I continue hosting on the same server or move to a VPS? I am a student and I don't have too much of a disposable income. So I want to move only if it is necessary. Right now it shows 1 Gb/infinity in data transfer. Any help/suggestions highly appreciated.

  • Where did my free space go?

    - by Ari B. Friedman
    I have a storage drive (2TB) and an OS drive (90GB SSD). I've run out of space on the OS drive: /$ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 72G 72G 0 100% / udev 5.9G 12K 5.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 2.4G 1.2M 2.4G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 5.9G 428K 5.9G 1% /run/shm /dev/sda1 1.9T 639G 1.2T 37% /media/StorageDrive So be it. But when I attempt to figure out where the space has gone, I cannot find it anything remotely approaching the capacity of the drive: /$ sudo du -h -d 1 du: cannot access `./media/StorageDrive/home/ari/.gvfs': Permission denied 675G ./media 2.3G ./var 0 ./proc 7.0M ./tmp 27M ./boot 4.0K ./lib64 12K ./dev 44M ./home 16K ./lost+found 8.0M ./sbin 223M ./lib 4.0K ./selinux 1.4M ./run 140K ./root 8.8M ./bin 4.0K ./mnt 38M ./etc 8.0K ./srv 4.8G ./usr 65M ./opt 0 ./sys 682G . Note the difference between the total (682G) and the mounted drives in /media (675G) is only about 9G. How are 72G being used? Where is this dark matter hiding?

  • Which of the following relational database management systems would a company adopt (for migration), if any, MS Access, MS SQL Server or MySQL?

    - by Hassan Hagi
Dear programmers, as part of my final year university project, I am conducting research into relational database management systems such as Microsoft Office Access 2007, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and MySQL 5.1. The description does not need to be detailed however; I am trying to find empirical evidence and professional opinion/fact to determine which of the three databases are best suited for the required size of company (stated or unstated). OS: Microsoft windows (XP or newer) Please consider the following, but full details are not necessary: Memory management Migration Design constraints Integrity (data and others) Triggers User constraints Ease of use Performance Crash Recovery (not the operating system) Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Also any info on Open source (to do with the three RDBMS) Thank you for your time and help. • JNI 'problmatic frame' causes JVM to crash

    - by HJED
Hi I'm using JNI to access the exiv2 library (written in C++) in Java and I'm getting a weird runtime error in the JNI code. I've tried using various -Xms and -Xmx options, but that seems to have no affect. • Getting work done in a small office

    - by three-cups
I work in an office area of ~450sqft. There are a total of 7 people working in the office. I've been finding it hard to concentrate on my work (writing code) because of the distractions going on around me. The distractions are both work-related and non-work-related conversations. I'm trying to figure out what to do in this situation. I want to be part of the team, and I want to get my work done to the best of my ability. I can easily think of two options that I don't like: Stay where I am, not be able to concentrate and get less work done Move somewhere else. (This is tough because I code on a desktop, so I'm not very mobile.) But what are other options? I'm going to talk this through with my team in the next couple days. Any advice or solutions would be great.

  • Is it possible to know impressions of other websites?

    - by Saeed Neamati
Google Webmasters's dashboard gives you a big number which is called impressions, and by definition that I've seen in Google Analytics, it means the total number of times your site has been become eligible for SERPs. I just don't have an idea how to invest on this number, and how much its increase or decrease mean to me, because I can't compare it with other websites. I mean, if the impressions of say site a.com is 150,000, and mine is 50,000, then maybe I can confer that I need to triple my efforts to reach to a.com. But by seeing 50,000 alone I have no clue at all of how to interpret it. Is there any service or other way to know about the impressions Google gives to other sites?

  • Jr developer report bug to potential future boss [on hold]

    - by Cryptoforce
I applied for a Web developer job in Quebec City, and they called me back for a phone interview. Everything went well, it last for over a hours, and at the end they ask me to send code simple and a portfolio, but in my research about the company and their products I found a PHP error(bug) in their app. Should I tell them or I would that make me look like a total jerk and blow my chance for a interview? I know it might sound stupid. As a junior developer I did 2 interviews they didn't go so well. I am very interested in this position part of my question is like a big lack of confidence so to make it short should I tell them about where is the error and how to fix it? Thanks

  • tail stops displaying in case of a log rotation

    - by Rudy Vissers
I have to tail the log of a server (servicemix) and the log rotation is enabled. As soon as the rotation happens, tail stops displaying. I did some investigations and it is a bug in Debian : Debian Bug Report. The bug has been around for a long time ago. Does anyone knows if this bug in Ubuntu is to be fixed? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I don't have to mention that this bug is total hell! Every time I have the problem, I have to interrupt the command tail and re-execute the command!

  • Can I remove "Free space" text from the Nautilus status bar?

    - by DisgruntledGoat
I want to remove the part in Nautilus that shows free disk space. In theory it may useful but it's so badly designed, every time I select some files my eye gets drawn to "15 GB" instead of the actual size of the files. And with no files selected, it says something like "24 items, Free space 15GB" which at a quick glance looks like the total size of the files. I've looked through the preferences and don't see anything. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Nautilus 2.32.0.

  • New to world of Ubuntu

    - by Michael Raymond Cheney
I've been running Ubuntu 13.04 since June 2013, and upgrading to 13.10 as we speak.(Note I own total 3 laptops.) My goal is to have one complete Linux machine and one dual boot, and third well (he is a newer Lenovo with Windows 8.1 and is touch screen.) but I want to learn Ubuntu life and further myself with using it for everyday use, but I'm not very fluid in Linux usage and hoping to find people who have a love for teaching others how to be one with the BEST OS IN THE WORLD! Hope I've got few people wanting to teach or give good instruction for success. ~Mike Cheney~
