  Hey, OK i want to start writing platform independent and open source code (mostly C++). What do i have to consider when doing so? Stop using IDEs and better use makefiles from now on? What do all the "professional" open source coders do (like the guys behind GNU) and what tools do they use? I'm special interested into developing shared libraries. How do you get the cross platform (so working as ".so" on Linux and as ".dll" on Windows)? I'm working on Windows so I'm not that much into all the Linux tools and words, are there good tools to get the same result on Windows as on ?Linux Thanks

• How do I get bison/flex to restart scanning after something like token substitution?

  Is there a way to force bison and/or flex to restart scanning after I replace some token with something else? My particular example would be with replacement for a specific word/string. If I want a word of hello to be replaced by echo hello, how can I get flex or bison to replace hello and then start parsing again (to pick up 2 words instead of just one). So it would be like: Get token WORD (which is a string type) If hello, replace token value with echo hello Restart parsing entire input (which is now echo hello) Get token WORD (echo) Get token WORD (hello) I've seen very tempting functions like yyrestart(), but I don't really understand what that function in particular really accomplishes. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

For example, in an attendance tracking system, an Occurrence refers to an Excused Absence, an Unexcused Absence, or a Tardy. In technical documentation (both in helper text and in user guides, etc), should these concepts be proper nouns, and as such, should they be capitalized in usage?   I need to implement a simple plotting component in C#(WPF to be more precise). What i have is a collection of data samples containing time (X axis) and a value (both double types). I have a drawing canvas of a fixed size (Width x Height) and a DrawLine method/function that can draw on it. The problem I am facing now is how do I draw the plot so that it is autoscaled? In other words how do I map the samples I have to actual pixels on my Width x Height canvas?

  I have a text file that I need to parse using regular expressions. The text that I need to capture is in multiline groups like this: truck zDoug Doug's house (123) 456-7890 [email protected] 30 61234.56 8/10/2003 vehicle eRob Rob's house (987) 654-3210 [email protected] For this example I need to capture truck followed by the next seven lines.In other words, in this "block" I have 8 groups. This is what I've tried but it will not capture the next line: (truck)\n(\w). NOTE: I'm using the program RegExr to test my regex before I port it to Java.

• Finding the best jquery plugins

  Is there a resource for finding the "best" jquery plugins, or at least just the most used ones? For example, I wanted to find a menu jquery plugin but when I goto the jquery website there are so many to look through and I don't see a way to see how popular each one is. For ruby there's the http://ruby-toolbox.com/ which lists many plugins, how popular they are, info about them, etc. Is there something similar or at least some way to filter through all the jquery plugins? EDIT 1: To shed some more light on this - the "most popular" link on the jquery page is useless. I can't find a way to search through it but even worse, the ratings don't seem to mean much. Ex - the first item, in other words the most popular plugin in that list has 5 stars and TWO votes. Doesn't seem like a very reliable resource to me.

• Is there a name for the technique of using base-2 numbers to encode a list of unique options?

  Apologies for the rather vague nature of this question, I've never been taught programming and Google is rather useless to a self-help guy like me in this case as the key words are pretty ambiguous. I am writing a couple of functions that encode and decode a list of options into a Long so they can easily be passed around the application, you know this kind of thing: 1 - Apple 2 - Orange 4 - Banana 8 - Plum etc. In this case the number 11 would represent Apple, Orange & Plum. I've got it working but I see this used all the time so assume there is a common name for the technique, and no doubt all sorts of best practice and clever algorithms that are at the moment just out of my reach.

• Forbid GridView to load all views at once

  I have about 700 items to display in the grid view. On a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 this is not a problem: it has enough memory. On a HTC Explorer the heap is overflown. So I want to load data dynamically regarding current scroll position (N rows for screen + 5 rows as a tail). And I want to show a scrollbar which represents the position in total rows. But I don't want to draw items that I don't see. In other words, I want to create something similar to UITableView in iOS. How can I do this?

  I tried to write reasonably short title but i failed i guess.. Hi everybody here's what i'm trying to do: I want to implement a web text editor able to recognize when the user drag a image file over it's editing surface and it automa(gically) starts the upload and insert the image near the cursor position. In other words i don't want the user to do the usual "insert-image-browse-ok". Atm i am not very good at javascript ... i know JQuery but i have not a clear idea about how to implement this... i don't know if there's an event handler able to help me in this situation... if not then there should be i think or web apps would miss some kind of interactivity. I've heard miracles about HTML5 could it help me? I've seen such things in Google Wave but that surface doesn't seem to be a form field... google lab's black magic i guess.... Thank you in advance.

• I want a machine to learn to categorize short texts

  Hello, I have a ton of short stories about 500 words long and I want to categorize them into one of, let's say, 20 categories: Entertainment Food Music etc I can hand-classify a bunch of them, but I want to implement machine learning to guess the categories eventually. What's the best way to approach this? Is there a standard approach to machine learning I should be using? I don't think a decision tree would work well since it's text data...I'm completely new in this field. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  I'm building a multiple webbrowser inside tabs( 1 predefine webbrowser control per tab) and I want them all to load at the same time or other words must run in thread. Unfortunately I feel a valid fact came from the error message that this is something not possible. Pls help me to check my simple program code below and its error in case i tried releasing 2 webbrowser controls but when I leave it to single web browser control it works fine. Any workaround? • Firefox, prevent rendering between javascript statements.

  I'm trying to create some kind of zoom around the mouse cursor feature on my website which ultimately runs these two lines (+ the same for height/scrollTop). canvas.style.width = someValue; canvas.parentNode.scrollLeft = someOtherValue; The problem is that in firefox(3.6) the page is re-rendered directly after the first row has been executed and since the view is depending on both values this means that every time i recalculate the view firefox will will render an invalid view before the correct one, in other words creating flicker. I've tried swapping the two rows but get the same problem. In chrome, opera and IE this doesn't happen. Both lines are executed before any rendering is done. Expression has no other elements like TAB, NEWLINE I don't need arithmetic expressions. I can do the evaluation but can somebody help me to convert the strings to prefix notation?

• Loading a DB table into nested dictionaries in Python

  Hi, I have a table in MySql DB which I want to load it to a dictionary in python. the table columns is as follows: id,url,tag,tagCount tagCount is the number of times that a tag has been repeated for a certain url. So in that case I need a nested dictionary, in other words a dictionary of dictionary, to load this table. • How can I debug or set a break statement inside an expression tree?

  When an external library contains a LINQ provider, and it throws an exception when executing a dynamic expression tree, how can I break when that expression is thrown? For example, I use a third party LINQ2CRM provider, which allows me to call the Max<TSource, TResult>() method of IQueryable, but when it throws an InvalidCastException, I fail to break on the spot when the exception is thrown, making it hard to review the stack-trace because it's already unwinded when the debugger breaks it in my code. I've set "break on throw" for the mentioned exception. My debug settings are: Clarification on where exactly I'd want to break. I do not want to break in side the LINQ Expression, but instead, I want to break when the expression tree is executed, or, put in other words, when the IQueryable extension method Max() calls the override provided by the LINQ provider. The top of the stacktrace looks like this, which is where I would like to break inside (or step through, or whatever): at XrmLinq.QueryProviderBase.Execute[T](Expression expression) at System.Linq.Queryable.Max[TSource,TResult](IQueryable`1 source, Expression`1 selector)

  Hi, I'm looking for a tool that checks JS code, which can be integrated into a Maven build. I need a tool that will check for errors such as use of reserved words as identifiers trailing semi-colon, e.g. var obj = { a: 1, b, 2, } JSLint seems like a perfect candidate, but the problem is that it is too strict, because it also checks for various coding patterns which are (arguably) bad style, but do not actually generate errors in a browser. Examples of such issues include Disallow ++ and -- and Allow one var statement per function If possible, I would like the errors to fail the build, and I would like the other rules to only print warnings (or disable them completely). Even I don't know how to see what dirs are on my PATH variable (and this is another good question that could be answered), what I'd like to know is: I come to shell and write: $ lshw I want to know a command on shell that can tell me WHERE this command is located. In other words, where this "executable file" is located? Something like: $ location lshw /usr/bin Anyone?

• Most efficient way for a lookup/search in a huge list (python)

  Hey guys, -- I just parsed a big file and I created a list containing 42.000 strings/words. I want to query [against this list] to check if a given word/string belongs to it. So my question is: What is the most efficient way for such a lookup? A first approach is to sort the list [list.sort()] and then just use the if word in list: print 'word' -- which is really trivial and I am sure there is a better way to do it. My goal is to apply a fast lookup that finds whether a given string is in this list or not. If you have any ideas of another data structure, they are welcome. Yet, I want to avoid for now more sophisticated data-structures like Tries etc. I am interested in hearing ideas (or tricks) about fast lookups or any other python library methods that might do the search faster than the simple 'in'.   I'm trying to determine how to find/retrieve/load objects efficiently in terms of a.) minimizing calls to database and b.) keeping the code as elegant/simple as possible (i.e. not writing hql etc.). Assume you have two objects: public class Foo { Bar bar String badge } public class Bar { String name } Each Foo has a bar and a badge. Also assume that all badges are unique within a bar. So if a Foo has a badge "4565" there are no other Foos that have the same badge # AND the same bar. If I have a bar ID, how can I efficiently retrive the Foo w/o first selecting Bar? I know I can do this: Foo.findByBadgeAndBar("4565", Bar.findById("1")) But that seems to cause a select on the Bar table followed by a select on the Foo table. In other words, I need to produce the Grails/Hibernate/GORM equivalent of the following: select * from foo where badge="4565" and bar_id="1"

• Jquery: How do I fire/play a sound file when I want?

  I have some code that basically inflates a 'balloon' through 15 or so stages and then makes it pop at the 16th stage. (yes, images are changed). What I'm wondering now is if it's possible to use Jquery to play a sound file whenever I reach that 16th stage (or when whatever var reaches whatever value) - in other words...when I want. I've found several jquery sound plugins but they all create this player which I must then click for it to play the file.
