• Return a URI for local resource from a webservice

  I want to design a webservice that returns a URI to a local resource on the webserver. What is the best (simplest) way to do this in C# using .asmx webservice? Or in other words - how can I get the URI for a physical file path in a webservice? Build a URI using the Uri class and the [WebService] namespace attribute? I know there is Server.MapPath(); that converts a virtual path into the corresponding physical path. I am looking for a way to do the opposite - having the physical path, I want to get not only the virtual path but the full URI. So if the webservice URI is http://some.server.com/services/example.asmx, the virtual path to the file I want to return is /Updates/file.xml and the physical path to that file is C:\Updates\file.xml what is the best way to get the URI http://some.server.com/updates/file.xml from that information? • Given an even number of vertices, how to find an optimum set of pairs based on proximity?

  The problem: We have a set of n vertices in 3D euclidean space, and there is an even number of these vertices. We want to pair them up based on their proximity. In other words, we'd like to be able to find a set of vertex pairs, where the vertices in each pair are as close as possible together. We want to minimise sacrificing the proximity between the vertices of any other pairs as much as possible in doing this. I am not looking for the most optimal solution (if it even strictly exists/can be done), just a reasonable one that can be computed relatively quickly. A relatively awful brute force approach involves choosing a vertex and looping through the rest to find its nearest neighbor and then repeating until there are none left. Of course as we near the end of the list the closest vertex could be very far away, but it is the only choice, therefore this can fail badly on the third point above.

• Sort database entries via a dropdown list

  Hello! I'm curious if anyone could possibly help me, because I can't find anything exactly related to it anywhere, and it's driving me nuts. I'd like to have a dropdown list on a page, that will give the visitor the option to sort all entries by year. I have entries from i.e. 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010. The years should be displayed in the dropdown, so the visitor can easily just select all entries dated 2001 if they want. The year for each entry is located in the one database table I have. In other words, I simply want a "sort by" dropdown that you can see on pretty much any shopping site nowadays. But with set years. Thanks in advance for any replies!

  Let's say I have a class public class MyObject { public int SimpleInt{get;set;} } And I have a List<MyObject>, and I ToList() it and then change one of the SimpleInt, will my change be propagated back to the original list. • Image gallery with a Lightbox in jQuery

  Hi. I'd like to create a jQuery image gallery of showcased products. It will show one product image at a time, with Next/Previous arrows, and a brief name and price as overlay on the image. If users click it, it will go to the order page. It will have an icon to show a larger, modal version (Lightbox style) of the image with full description, price, and a link to a page to order it. In other words, it's an inline gallery, about 250px X 150px, with next/previous option, but also with a little icon to fire it up in a lightbox type modal window that can have links. Here's an example which doesn't have the inline gallery effect. Here's another, also missing the inline gallery. Is there such a beast as what I'm looking for? Thanks.

  Hi all, I saw some questions raised about the folder structure of source codes, but I never see the question about folder structure of project documentation. I googled it and still do not see many articles talk about. For example, you might have directories for Feasibility, Business Analysis, Design etc. or whatever your phases are called. Organize by function so that the top directory level are functions. For example, Risks, Requirements, Scope, Change Control, Development. Most times a mix of both are used..." So any thought about it? I believe this is also an important issue!

• How to handle null {id} on route?

  What if a user hits my site with http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit rather than http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit/1000 In other words, they do not specify a value for {id}. If they do not, I want to display a nice "Not Found" page, since they did not give an ID. I currentl handle this by accepting a nullable int as the parameter in the Controller Action and it works fine. However, I'm curious if there a more standard MVC framework way of handling this, rather than the code I presently use (see below). Is a smoother way to handle this, or is this pretty mush the right way to do it?   I have a console application written in c++. It simply reads an integer from standard input(keyboard) and writes another integer to standard output(screen). Now I want to give some tests to that program and check its answers using another program. In another words, I want to write electron judge for that program. I want that program(which I want to test) to read from file and write to file without changing source code. How can I do that.   I've got addresses I need to clean up for matching purposes. Part of the process is trimming unwanted suffices from housenumbers, e.g: mainstreet 4a --> mainstreet 4. However I don't want: 618 5th Ave SW --> 618 5 Ave SW in other words there are some strings (for now: st, nd, rd, th) which I don't want to strip. What would be the best method of doing this (regex or otherwise) ? a wokring regex without the exceptions would be: a = a.replaceAll("(^| )([0-9]+)[a-z]+($| )","$1$2$3"); //replace 1a --> 1 I thought about first searching and substiting the special cases with special characters while keeping the references in a map, then do the above regex, and then doing the reverse substitute using the reference map, but I'm looking for a simpler solution.   I'm trying to create a regex that will look for french words whether a user specifies the accented characters or not. So if the the user has searched for "déclaré" but types in declare instead I would like to be able to match the text still. I'm having difficulty making this more dynamic so that it can be matched on any french word... Closest example from another user from a different post was: d[eèéê]cl[aàáâ]r[eèéê] Is it even possible to write a regex for something like this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

  Hi, I am developing an application using PHP but I am new to regular expressions, I could not find a solution to my problem. I want to replace all occurences of #word with a link, i have written a preg_match for this: $text=preg_replace('~#([\p{L}|\p{N}]+)~u', '<a href="/?aranan=$1">#$1</a>', $text); The problem is, this regular expression also matches the html character codes like &#039; and gives corrupt output. I need to exclude the words starting with &# but i do not know how to do that using regular expressions. Thanks for your help.

  I have a php variable that comes from a form that needs tidying up. I hope you can help. The variable contains a list of items (possibly two or three word items with a space in between words). I want to convert it to a comma separated list with no superfluous white space. I want the divisions to fall only at commas, semi-colons or new-lines. Blank cannot be an item. Here's a comprehensive example (with a deliberately messy input): Variable In: "dog, cat ,car,tea pot,, ,,, ;;(++NEW LINE++)fly, cake" Variable Out "dog,cat,car,tea pot,fly,cake" Can anyone help?

• Using Remote Web Server to Initialize iPhone App

  My iPhone app relies on a vendor's XML feed to provide data. But that feed is not locked down. The vendor could change the format of the XML at any time, although so far they've promised not to. Since I might want to tell my app to use a different URL for its data source, I'd like to set up a single "Command Central" Web page, on my own server, to direct the app to the correct data source. In other words, each time my app starts, in the background and unseen by the user, it would visit "http://www.myserver.com/iphoneapp_data_sources.xml" to retrieve the URL for retrieving data from my vendor. That way, if my vendor suddenly changes the exact URL or the XML feed that the app needs, I can update that Web page and ensure that all installations of the app are using the correct XML feed. Does anyone have any advice or examples showing this kind of approach? It seems as if this must be a common problem, but so far I haven't found a well-established design pattern that fits it.

  I'm trying to upgrade my doctrine ORM from 1.1.6 to 1.2.1 but i've enountered a BC issue with table names. Some of my table names have several words (e.g. t_foo_bar for class FooBar) where the t_ prefix is generated automatically with: $manager->setAttribute(Doctrine_Core::ATTR_TBLNAME_FORMAT, 't_%s'); This worked well in previous versions. In 1.2.1 however, it looks like doctrine is looking for t_foobar (instead of t_foo_bar with an underscore). Do you know how to solve this without changing the table names?

If you have a code that can be executed in either of the following complexities: (1) A sequence of O(n), like for example: two O(n) in sequence (2) O(n²) The preferred version would be the one that can be executed in linear time. Would there be a time such that the sequence of O(n) would be too much and that O(n²) would be preferred? In other words, is the statement C x O(n) < O(n²) always true for any constant C? If no, what are the factors that would affect the condition such that it would be better to choose the O(n²) complexity?

• hidden style affecting links in table?

  In a table of mine I have the table header, th which have two separate links in each cell. Each of them wrap to a new line which I don't want. If I remove all the style sheets it doesn't fix it. If i disable style sheets in the browser it fixes it but there are no inline styles that would cause the wrapping. If they are non-hyperlinked words they don't wrap. If i use the td tag it doesn't fix it either. There is too much code all over the shop to post but all I want is in a th cell a word with an image next to it with a different hyperlink. Hope that makes sense

• Submit jQuery UI dialog on <Enter>

  I have a jQuery UI dialog box with a form. I would like to simulate a click on one of the dialog's buttons so you don't have to use the mouse or tab over to it. In other words, I want it to act like a regular GUI dialog box where simulates hitting the "OK" button. I assume this might be a simple option with the dialog, but I can't find it in the jQuery UI documentation.   Is there any way to vertically align an image element generated by a "content" property as part of a ":before" selector, next to adjacent inline text? In other words, I have <a href="..." class="facebook">Share on Facebook</a> As I don't want to pollute my markup with unnecessary IMG elements that only have to do with style, I resort to adding a small icon to the left of the link, via CSS (except that it does not align properly, hence the question): a.facebook:before { content: url(/style/facebook-logo.png); } I tried adding a "vertical-align: middle" (one of the most notoriously difficult aligning concepts to grasp in CSS, in my opinion, is that very property) but it has no effect. The logo aligns with text baseline, and I don't want to hardcode pixel offsets, because frankly text size differs from browser to browser, etc. Is there any solution for this? Thanks.

• What Visual C++ references are worth a look for a Java programmer looking to get up to speed?

  I have a lot of experience with Java/OO. There are tons of C++ tutorials/references out there, but I was wondering if there are a few key ones that a Java programmer might find useful when making the transition. I will be moving from server-side J2EE to Windows Visual C++ desktop programming. I have googled and found tons of resources, but am overwhelmed and don't know where to best spend my time. I have only a few days to get a good start. Is Visual Studio Express / Microsoft Visual C++ the best IDE for me to start with? Also, any words of wisdom from others who know and work with both languages?
