  Team, can anyone please help me to understand what could be the problem in the below snippet of code? It fails after insertion 2 and insertion 3 debug statements I have the contentValues in the Array list, I am iterating the arraylist and inserting the content values in to the database. • Why does a conditional not affect query speed?

  I have a stored procedure that was taking a "long" period of time to execute. The query only needs to return data in one case, so I figured I could check for that case and just return before hitting the actual query. The only problem is that it still takes the same amount of time to execute with an if statement. I have verified that the code inside the if is not executing, and that if I replace the complex query with a simple select the speed is fine... so now I'm confused. Why is the query being slowed down by code that doesn't get executed when the conditional is false? • Avoiding anemic domain model - a real example

  I am trying to understand Anemic Domain Models and why they are supposedly an anti-pattern. Here is a real world example. I have an Employee class, which has a ton of properties - name, gender, username, etc public class Employee { public string Name { get; set; } public string Gender { get; set; } public string Username { get; set; } // Etc.. mostly getters and setters } Next we have a system that involves rotating incoming phone calls and website enquiries (known as 'leads') evenly amongst sales staff. This system is quite complex as it involves round-robining enquiries, checking for holidays, employee preferences etc. So this system is currently seperated out into a service: EmployeeLeadRotationService. public class EmployeeLeadRotationService : IEmployeeLeadRotationService { private IEmployeeRepository _employeeRepository; // ...plus lots of other injected repositories and services public void SelectEmployee(ILead lead) { // Etc. lots of complex logic } } Then on the backside of our website enquiry form we have code like this: public void SubmitForm() { var lead = CreateLeadFromFormInput(); var selectedEmployee = Kernel.Get<IEmployeeLeadRotationService>() .SelectEmployee(lead); Response.Write(employee.Name + " will handle your enquiry. Thanks."); } I don't really encounter many problems with this approach, but supposedly this is something that I should run screaming from because it is an Anemic Domain Model. But for me its not clear where the logic in the lead rotation service should go. Should it go in the lead? Should it go in the employee? What about all the injected repositories etc that the rotation service requires - how would they be injected into the employee, given that most of the time when dealing with an employee we don't need any of these repositories?

  What is the way to implement "business rules" in Rails? Let us say I have a car and want to sell it: car = Cars.find(24) car.sell car.sell method will check a few things: does current_user own the car? check: car.user_id == current_user.id is the car listed for sale in the sales catalog? check: car.catalogs.ids.include? car.id if all o.k. then car is marked as sold. I was thinking of creating a class called Rules: class Rules def initialize(user,car) @user = user @car = car end def can_sell_car? @car.user_id == @user.id && @car.catalogs.ids.include? @car.id end end And using it like this: def Car def sell if Rules.new(current_user,self).can_sell_car ..sell the car... else @error_message = "Cannot sell this car" nil end end end As for getting the current_user, I was thinking of storing it in a global variable? I think that whenever a controller action is called, it's always a "fresh" call right? If so then storing the current user as a global variable should not introduce any risks..(like some other user being able to access another user's details) Any insights are appreciated! UPDATE So, the global variable route is out! Thanks to PeterWong for pointing out that global variables persist! I've now thinking of using this way: class Rules def self.can_sell_car?(current_user, car) ......checks.... end end And then calling Rules.can_sell_car?(current_user,@car) from the controller action. • Applying for .net jobs as a "self learner"

  Hi All, I have recently started applying for .Net jobs. I currently work in a sales role with a large telco. I found out quite late that I like programming and as such bought my house and made commitments that mean college is not an option. What I would like to know is, is it harder to get a junior job as a self learner? I have gotten a few enquiries regarding my C.V but nothing concrete yet. I try to be involved in projects as I get the chance and tend to put up any worthwhile projects as I develop them. The other query is how much should I actually know? I've never used linked lists but I know that strings are immutable and I understand what that means. I am only touching on T-SQL but I understand things like how properties function in IL (as two standard methods :) ). I suppose I understand a lot of concepts but specific features need some looking up to implement as I may not know the syntax off the top of my head.

• Someone selling my GPL theme

  I'm having a tough time trying to figure out the best way to handle this. I've created a few themes last year, released them under a GPL license, and pretty much forgot about them. My goal was to put them out publicly as samples of my work. I've recently come across a site and was shocked they are selling one of my themes among several other themes (not mine) and other support and package systems. Anyway needless to say I'm not happy about this. I did not intend for those themes to be sold, and if they are to be sold, at least I would expect a percentage of those sales. I contacted the website asking how many they sold and that I'm the author of one of the themes they were selling. I eventually received a reply that my theme is a GPL theme and that this license allows them to sell it without compensation to me. WTF? Just the way the reply was worded pissed me off. There is no way to comment on the site to inform possible buyers that those themes can be downloaded from my site. What can I do about this? I realize now it was a bad choice to release them under that license. Is it possible to take back the theme from public distribution or is it out forever. Can I change it from GPL to another license at this point? Will that be sufficient to stop the sale of my theme in the future? Any insights are appreciated.

But what I want is that there has to be a webchart per user. So instead of a single webchart with all the users in it, I want multiple charts next to each other based on the data from the database. So instead of this: http://jsfiddle.net/CWSb6/ I want this (But then next to each other): http://jsfiddle.net/DReMD/ It has to be generated automatically with php and mysql. So if there is a new user starting this month, and the new user is saved in the database, the page automatically displays the new user with the related web chart.   I've got a fully custom PHP site with a lot of database calls. I just got injection hacked. This little chunk of code below showed up in dozens of my PHP pages. <?php /**/ eval(base64_decode(big string of code.... I've been pretty careful about my SQL calls and such; they're all in this format: $query = sprintf("UPDATE Sales SET `Shipped`='1', `Tracking_Number`='%s' WHERE ID='%s' LIMIT 1 ;", mysql_real_escape_string($trackNo), mysql_real_escape_string($id)); $result = mysql_query($query); mysql_close(); For the record, I rarely use mysql_close() at the end though. That just happened to be the code I grabbed. I can't think of any places where I don't use mysql_real_escape_string(), (although I'm sure there's probably a couple. I'll be grepping soon to find out) There's also no places where users can put in custom HTML or anything. In fact, most of the user-accessible pages, if they use SQL calls at all, are almost inevitably "SELECT * FROM" pages that use a GET or POST, depending. Obviously I need to beef up my security, but I've never had an attack like this and I'm not positive what I should do. I've decided to put limits on all my inputs and go through looking to see if i missed a mysql_real_escape_string somewhere... Anybody else have any suggestions? Also... what does this type of code do? Why is it there?

• Find out which row caused the error

  I have a big fat query that's written dynamically to integrate some data. Basically what it does is query some tables, join some other ones, treat some data, and then insert it into a final table. The problem is that there's too much data, and we can't really trust the sources, because there could be some errored or inconsistent data. For example, I've spent almost an hour looking for an error while developing using a customer's database because somewhere in the middle of my big fat query there was an error converting some varchar to datetime. It turned out to be that they had some sales dating '2009-02-29', an out-of-range date. And yes, I know. Why was that stored as varchar? Well, the source database has 3 columns for dates, 'Month', 'Day' and 'Year'. I have no idea why it's like that, but still, it is. But how the hell would I treat that, if the source is not trustable? I can't HANDLE exceptions, I really need that it comes up to another level with the original message, but I wanted to provide some more info, so that the user could at least try to solve it before calling us. So I thought about displaying to the user the row number, or some ID that would at least give him some idea of what record he'd have to correct. That's also a hard job because there will be times when the integration will run up to 80000 records. And in an 80000 records integration, a single dummy error message: 'The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value' means nothing at all. So any idea would be appreciated. Oh I'm using SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 3.

• ImageButton OnClick Event not firing

  Hi All, I am really confused about this one. I have some code that runs fine on my development server but I am now trying to get the site working on the sales guys new laptop. None of the image buttons on the website seem to be working for him (they just redirect me back to the websites homepage) whereas they used to on his previous machine. The only difference between each machine is that his old one was Vista and the new one is Windows 7. Has anyone come accross this issue? • Uncrackable anti-piracy protection/DRM even possible? [closed]

  I hope that this is programming-related enough. You have probably heard about Ubisofts recent steps against piracy. (New DRM requires a constant connection to the Ubisoft server) Many people including me see this as intolerable because the only ones suffering from it at the end are the paying customers. Now to the actual question(s): Ubisoft justified this by calling this mechanism "Uncrackable, only playable by the paying customers". Is a so called uncrackable DRM even possible? You can reverse-engineer and modify everything, even if it takes long. Isn't Ubisoft already lying by calling something not crackable? I mean, hey - With the game you get all its content (textures, models, you know) and some anti-piracy mechanism hardcoded into it. How could that be "uncrackable"? You can just patch the unwanted mechanisms out ---- "Pirates" play the cracked game without problems and the paying customers are the idiots by having constant problems with the game and being unable to play it without a (working) internet connection. What are the points Ubisoft sees in this? If they are at least a bit intelligent and informed they know their anti-piracy protection won't last long. All they get is lower sales, angry customers and happy pirates and crackers.

  Hi guys, I am writing a user security module using SQLServer 2008 so threfore need to design a database accordingly. Formally I had Userinfo table with UserID, Username and ParentID to build a recursion and populated tree to represent hierarchy but now I have following criteria which I need to develop. I have now USERS, ADMINISTRATORS and GROUPS. Each node in the user hierarchy is either a user, administrator or group. User Someone who has login access to my application Administrator A user who may also manage all their child user accounts (and their children etc) This may include creating new users and assigning permissions to those users. There is no limit to the number of administrators in user structure. The higher up in the hierarchy that I go administrators have more child accounts to manage which include other child administrators. Group A user account can be designated as a group. This will be an account which is used to group one or more users together so that they can be manage as a unit. But no one can login to my application using a group account. • Where can a self-teacher learn general good programming habits and conventions?

  A few mistakes and general childishness in early adulthood have left me in a situation where I work a menial job, with no possibility (in the near future) of attending school. I aspire to one day work in the programming field (gaming specifically), after proving myself on the indie end of things. I've gotten very confident in C++, java, and python, and I find I'm able to solve any problem I want either from previous experience, or from scouring the web for help. The solutions work, and with each attempt they become more readable, maintainable, and extensible. But this is because I'm learning from mistakes and bad programming and design habits I feel I might have avoided with actual schooling. General tips like: "if it's hard to read or getting long, or you're writing it twice, it should be in one or more functions." or "design all your classes before you start coding, so you don't have to rewrite classes later when you discover an unforeseen dependency" Is there a good book or website for learning general good programming practices and design habits? Also, naming and format conventions. I realize sometimes development houses have their own conventions, but things like "Classes in python usually have the first letter of each word capitalized". I'd like to be able to show some source code to a potential employer, and be prepared when for what's expected on a team. Is there some central database of naming and formatting conventions somewhere? Also, feel free to give any thoughts on whether or not the self-teach, garner some indie sales, use them as your resume' route is realistic

• Stupid newbie c++ two-dimensional array problem.

  I've no idea if this is too newbie or generic for stackoverlflow. Apologies if that's the case, I don't intend to waste time. I've just started working through C++ Primer Plus and I've hit a little stump. The rest of the code works fine: input is fine, individual yearly output is fine but I just can't get 3 years added together for one final total. I did have the total working at one point but I didn't have the individual totals working. I messed with it and reversed the situation. I've been messing with it for God knows how long. Any idea guys? Sorry if this isn't the place!

How can I get this data? I've tried queries like this: SELECT storeID, itemID, price FROM saledata WHERE itemID IN (SELECT itemID from itemmap) ORDER BY saledate DESC LIMIT 1 and then wrap that into an insert, but it's not getting the proper data.   Hello all, I've got a requirement to both read and write data via a .net webservice to a sqlserver database that's on a private network. this database is currently accessed via a vpn connection by remote client software (on standard desktop machines) to get latest product prices and to upload product stock sales. I've been tasked with finding a way to centralise this access from a webservice that the clients then access, rather than them using the vpn route to connect directly to the database. My question is related to my .net service's relationship to the sqlserver database. What are the options for connecting to a private network vpn from a domain host in order to achive the functionality of allowing the webservice to both read and write data to the database. For now, I'm not too concerned about the client connectivity and security (tho i appreciate that this will have to be worked out too), I'm really just interested in discovering the options available in order to allow my .net webservice to connect to the private network in as painless and transparent a way as posible. The option of switching the database onto public hosting is not an option, so I have to work with the sdcenario as described above for now, unless there's a compelling rationale presented to do otherwise. thanks all... jim

  I'm writing an interface to a web service where we need to upload configuration files. The documentation only provides a sample in C#.net which I am not familiar with. I'm trying to implement this in PHP. Can someone familiar with both languages point me in the right direction? I can figure out all the basics, but I'm trying to figure out suitable PHP replacements for the FileStream, ReadBytes, and UploadDataFile functions. I believe that the RecService object contains the URL for the web service. • Javascript: How to test JSONP on localhost

  Here is the way I test JSONP: I run XAMPP, and in folder htdocs I create a javascript folder . I create json1.json file contain some data to process. After that, I run this html file locally, and it will call a function in "other machine" (in this case is localhost) Here is my code : <head> <script> function updateSales(sales) { alert('test jsonp'); // real code here } </script> </head> <body> <h1>JSONP Example</h1> <script src="http://localhost:85/javascript/json1.json?callback=updateSales"></script> </body> But when I run, nothing happen. But if change to other real json on the internet, it will work. It means change line : <script src="http://localhost:85/javascript/json1.json?callback=updateSales"></script> to line: <script src="http://gumball.wickedlysmart.com/?callback=updateSales"></script> It will work smoothly. So, I don't know how to test JSONP by using localhost, please help me. Thanks :)

However, in one situation, I want to dismiss just the UIAlertView, the other, I want the UIAlertView to be dismissed and view to return to root view.
