• Warn user when new data is inserted on database

  I don't know how to search about this so I'm kinda lost (the two topics I saw here were closed). I have a news website and I want to warn the user when a new data is inserted on the database. I want to do that like here on StackOverflow where we are warned without reloading the page or like in facebook where you are warned about new messages/notifications without reloading. Which is the best way to do that? Is it some kind of listener with a timeout that is constantly checking the database? It doesn't sounds efficient... Thanks in advance.

• To change checkbox text or to not change?

  Hi, I'm having an argument with a co-worker, and I'm trying to convince him that it's a bad idea to change checkbox text (label) according to the checkbox state. For example, we have a combobox that automatically picks selected value (and is disabled) when checkbox next to it is checked and is enabled when checkbox is cleared. His idea is to show Autoselect when checkbox is checked and Manual select when it's cleared. I'm sure that this will confuse the user as users tend to think that checking a checkbox next to a verb will make it true, only to find that the label has changed to something else. What is your opinion on this matter? P.S. I remember reading about changing checkbox text somewhere, in a book or blog article, but can't remember where. It would be great to have this in writing :-)

• How to make form validation in Django dynamic?

  I'm trying to make a form that handles the checking of a domain: the form should fail based on a variable that was set earlier in another form. Basically, when a user wants to create a new domain, this form should fail if the entered domain exists. When a user wants to move a domain, this form should fail if the entered domain doesn't exist. I've tried making it dynamic overload the initbut couldn't see a way to get my passed variabele to the clean function. I've read that this dynamic validation can be accomplished using a factory method, but maybe someone can help me on my way with this? • Detecting the Loopback Adapter

  What is the best way for detecting whether a network interface is a loopback adapter? The windows API's GetAdaptersInfo and GetAdaptersAddresses state in the documentation that they will return whether an interface is a loopback through the Type (MIB_IF_TYPE_LOOPBACK) but neither of these do for the Microsoft Loopback Adapter at least, it is reported as a standard ethernet interface. I could try checking for the default MAC of the Loopback adapter but this can be easily spoofed. I could check for the name "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" in the description but this may have translation issues and may lead to other issues. IP addresses can also be changed. What is the most robust method for doing this?

• How to prevent application thievery?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with...

• Ruby - Is there a way to overwrite the __FILE__ variable?

  I'm doing some unit testing, and some of the code is checking to see if files exist based on the relative path of the currently-executing script by using the FILE variable. I'm doing something like this: if File.directory?(File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__),'..','..','directory')) blah blah blah ... else raise "Can't find directory" end I'm trying to find a way to make it fail in the unit tests without doing anything drastic. Being able to overwrite the __ FILE __ variable would be easiest, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible. Any tips?

• How can I relocate to a new repository address with TortoiseSVN?

  I have a working copy checked out from: https://oldserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch The server address has changed (actually, the repo was copied over to a new server) so I want to relocate my working copy to the new address: https://newserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch Note that only the address changed, not the path. But if I type that URL in TortoiseSVN's "Relocate" dialog box, I get the error "'https://newserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch' is not the root of the repository" ... well, of course it isn't, but so what? Then I thought maybe SVN wanted the repository root URL, so I tried giving it https://newserver/svn instead, but that produced the error "Relocate can only change the repository part of an URL". Are there any options besides backing up my changes and checking out a fresh WC from the new server?

• How to get information about a Windows executable (.exe) using C++

  Hi, I have to create a software that will scan several directories and extracts information about the executables found. I need to do two things: Determine if a given file is an executable (.exe, .dll, and so on) - Checking the extension is probably not good enough. Get the information about this executable (the company name, the product name, and so on). I never did this before and thus am not aware if there is a Windows API (or lightweight C/C++ library) to do that or if it is even possible. I guess it is, because explorer.exe does it. Do you guys know anything that could point me in the right direction ? Thank you very much for your help.

• What causes Apache Environment Variable set using mod_rewrite to have "redirect_" appended to name?

  I am trying to set Apache environment variables (for use in PHP) with the [E=VAR:VAL] flag on RewriteRule rules in an .htaccess file. I have already discovered the variables are accessed in PHP as server variables $_SERVER rather than $_ENV (which makes a certain amount of sense). However, my problem is for some rules the [E=VAR:VAL] flag works as expected and I end up with a variable $_SERVER['VAR'] but for other rules I end with a variable $_SERVER['REDIRECT_VAR'] or $_SERVER['REDIRECT_REDIRECT_VAR'], etc A. What causes an Environment Variable set in Apache using the [E=VAR:VAL] flag to get renamed by having "REDIRECT_" appended to the front of the variable name? B. What can I do to make sure I end up with an Environment Variable with an unchanged name so I can access it in PHP as $SERVER['VAR'] without having to resort to checking for variations of the variable name having one of more instances of "REDIRECT" appended to the front of it?

• Python: Best practice for including a version number in an app?

  I have a PyQt application that reads and writes data files. I am including a 'version number' in each file written. This is a simple number similar to: 1.2 or something (major and minor versions). I am doing this so that I can change the format of these data files in future versions and then still correctly parse them simply by checking to see what the version is inside the file. My question is what is the best practice for keeping this number stored inside the app itself. I.e. do I just hard-code the app version number into the class that is responsible for reading and writing files? Or should I have some sort of object/variable stored at the top-level of the app and somehow access it from the class responsible for reading and writing these files. If the latter, how do I store it and how do I access it? Thanks.

• An elegant / simple way to check whether internet is available or not.

  I did a quick search on how to check whether Internet is available or not. Most of them talked about making InterOp calls to wininet.dll. One of the answers pointed towards System.Net.NetworkInformation namespace. Exploring the namespace I found a class Ping which could be used to pinging to our servers from code, and checking whether server is available or not. What I want to ask is how this solution compares to other solutions?   I need to do some functions on some text field contents before submitting the form, like checking the validity of the customer registeration code, having the customer name as his code in customers table appending an incrementing number. I don't want to do it after the form is submitted becuase I need it to be displayed in the code field before submitting the form.   Hi, I much prefer using this 'embedded' style inserts in a pl/sql block (opposed to the execute immediate style dynamic sql - where you have to delimit quotes etc). -- a contrived example PROCEDURE CreateReport( customer IN VARCHAR2, reportdate IN DATE ) BEGIN -- drop table, create table with explicit column list CreateReportTableForCustomer; INSERT INTO TEMP_TABLE VALUES ( customer, reportdate ); END; / The problem here is that oracle checks if 'temp_table' exists and that it has the correct number of colunms and throws a compile error if it doesn't exist. So I was wondering if theres any way round that?! Essentially I want to use a placeholder for the table name to trick oracle into not checking if the table exists.

• deleting a large number of rows from a table

  We have a requirement to delete rows in the order of millions from multiple tables as a batch job (note that we are not deleting all the rows, we are deleting based on a timestamp stored in an indexed column). Obviously a normal DELETE takes forever (because of logging, referential constraint checking etc.). I know in the LUW world, we have ALTER TABLE NOT LOGGED INITIALLY but I can't seem to find the an equivalent SQL statement for DB2 v8 z/OS. Any one has any ideas on how to do this really fast? Also, any ideas on how to avoid the referential checks when deleting the rows? Please let me know.

So here's the question. Is it possible to pack an enum in C++, or can someone see why I would get the error? The error is: "semicolon missing after declaration of BeNeLux". I know, after checking and rechecking, that there definitely is a semicolon there, and in any places required in the rest of the code.

  Hello, I am creating a counter for unique number of visits on a post, so what I have until now is a table for storing data like this; cvp_post_id | cvp_ip | cvp_user_id In cases a registered user visits a post, for the first time a record is inserted with cpv_post_id and cvp_user_id, so for his next visit I query the table and if the record is available I do not count him as a new visitor. In cases of an anonymous user the same happens but now the cvp_ip and cpv_post_id are used. My concerns is that I do a query every time anyone visits a post for checking if there has been a visit, what would be a more effective way for doing this?

• best method for background uploader in Android

  Problem: I want to write a process that will allow a user to take photos with the device and for those photos to then be uploaded to some listener in the cloud. The user should not have to do anything to initiate the upload, a background listener would just watch the folder and as long as it finds files in it it would upload them and delete them. Two problems: 1) how to keep the program running in the background even after the user is no longer taking pictures (and if they reboot the device for it to wake up and finish the uploads, if any remain) 2) assuming the connection is spotty (as it always is) how to verify that a given image has completed its upload, and if not, to resubmit it. I don't need any code examples, I just would like opinions on the best strategy to get this implemented. I was going to use Apache commons and just do an upload to a PHP, but am not sure what sort of error checking exists to take into account a connection drop mid file. TIA.

• why i'm permanently logged off my be

  Hello i have a problem with BE in my system. I'm permanently and automaticly logged out it after some time. 10-15 seconds, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. It's not connected with beeing idle cause I can be logged off even when I'm checking page tree or saving records I've set lock ip on 1 but it didn't help. The problem is most common under Firefox or Chome, what is strange under internet explorer i don't see it as often Other strange thing is that I see it on my live version but when I'm working on my local copy it doen not occure TYPO3 version 4.6.4

  Hello guys! I'm creating an application for my company. And the goal is to create a universal installer that will be checking user's registry for specific apps installed and according to these apps would create a list of available installation components in "Select Components" window. And that's the particular problem I'm stacked with. I've already created the installer, but a user have to check/uncheck components he doesn't need because he doesn't use specific app. That is definitely not a good way of doing thing I guess...
