  • X window (or whole linux system) replace Caps Lock with ESC *and* Control

    on windows there are several key maps applications that replaces Caps lock with ESC on a single 'press and relase' and with a Control signal if hold and another key is pressed. Is there any way to do something similar on linux? Ideally on the whole system, but if it is only for X window it is fine too. i'm currently writting scripts with the xautomation package tools. but i guess there is already a better way to do that via configurations.

    Is there any way to kill or force closed a particular hanging window or hanging application by selecting it with some hotkey? Similar to Ctrl+Alt+Esc and select window in Ubuntu? (I may be misremembering the exact key shortcut used in Ubuntu; I just remember some key combination does that.)

  • How can I disable Control-W in Windows XP?

    I'm an Emacs/Mac user trapped on Windows at work and I often type Control-W from muscle memory to delete a word and thus by mistake kill the entire window, including everything that I was working on. This a particularly egregious problem for Console2 as I run GNU Screen and am often doing many things at once. Is there any way to completely disable Control-W or remap it to something that is far harder to type? Thanks!

  • OS X Enclosing folder shortcut?

    This may have been asked before, but I'm wondering whether there is a shortcut for navigating to the enclosing folder in OS X (Snow Leopard)? I find navigating Finder particularly frustrating since it's hard navigating back to the enclosing folder (especially when you jump to a folder and realize the back button is disabled)... I'm hoping for something other than Command+Up, since that's the key combination I use to navigate Spaces.

  • How to change key mappings in Cygwin's Vim

    I'm using Vim under Debian, Win Vista and WinXP (the latter two with Cygwin). To handle tabs more easily, I mapped <C-Left> and <C-Right> to :tab(prev|next). This mapping works like a charm on the Debian machine. On the Windows machines, however, pressing <C-Left> deletes 5 lines, as far as I can tell, and meddles with cursor position, while <C-Right> does this, too, and additionally enters Insert mode. Question: To put it in a nutshell, how can I find out, why Vim behaves as it does? Is there a way to backtrace the active commands and keystrokes? Could there be a plugin the culprit? (I didn't install one, perhaps a default include by the Cygwin distro...) If so, how can I find it? Edit 1: OK, it seems, that I got a first trace: The terminal sends for <C-Left> '^[[1;5D', and for right '^[[1;5C' (evaluated with the <C-V><C-Left> trick). If vim interprets this literally and discards the first characters, it explains the strange behaviour. Any ideas, how I could change this key mapping? Additional Diagnosis: This behaviour occurs regardless of any existing ~/.vimrc file (is therefore not related to my above mentioned mapings) and is not inherited of some /etc/vim/vimrc, since this doesn't exist in the default Cygwin installation. :verbose map doesn't yield any new insights. Either nothing or my mentioned mappings appear, based on the existence of the .vimrc file :help <C-Left> suggests, that the default would be a simple cursor movement, which is apparently not the case.   • Windows apps keep switching to accented text

    Somehow I keep hitting a shortcut key (or something similar) that enables the input of accented text. Whenever this accented text mode is enabled, pressing ' doesn't respond immediately; instead, the ' key is remembered, so if I press a vowel after that, I get the vowel with an acute accent mark, and if I press any other key, I immediately get an apostrophe followed by the other key. I don't want this to happen. It's very annoying. How do I disable this mode? I only remember seeing this in Firefox 3.6.3 and Pidgin 2.6.6, so maybe it's a GTK feature. It apparently happens on a per-application basis, and restarting the application fixes it. I checked Windows 7's "Region and Language" control panel and didn't see anything relevant (although I'm not intimately familiar with all of those settings, so I may have overlooked something).

  • Google Chrome "warn to quit" not warning on Cmd + Tab quit

    As a Mac poweruser, I often use Cmd + Tab to switch between applications. Tab is unfortunately close to Q, so I often end up jamming Cmd + Q as well by accident. On most applications, this isn't a problem; a popup appears confirming if I want to quit, and I just click "cancel." However, this isn't the case with Google Chrome. I checked "warn before quitting", and when I press Cmd + Q a box saying "Hold Cmd + Q to quit" pops up. But when jamming Cmd + Q while switching to Chrome using Cmd + Tab, it completely ignores the "warn before quitting" policy and quits immediately. Any way to fix this annoyance? Switching either of the shortcuts to something else would fix the problem, but I'm not able to find a way to do so.

    Sorry if this question exist already, I did some searches but could not find one myself. I am looking for the best programs to copy and paste stuff in windows more easily. So let's say instead of the default copy/paste one item at a time, I could have 5 different paragraphs that could all be pasted somewhere seperately. Hopefully this is not to confusing. Instead of bveing able to paste 1 item I would like to have a list of items that can be pasted or some similar functionality under windows. Please help make me more productive, I frequently need to copy and paste different sets of data. Here is a good exampl, let's say I need to be able to past my email somewhere but on another program or webpage I need to paste my home address.

  • WIndows Emacs Keybinding

    I know this is not a Windows site, so my apologies. I use Ubuntu all day, every day, and have finally convinced my buddy to try it. He is on Windows 7, so we installed this: http://www.ourcomments.org/cgi-bin/emacsw32-dl-latest.pl . It seems to be working great, but when he hits C-p ( prev. line ) it is trying to print the page for some reason. So, 2 questions. Is there a way to make it stop that, and is there a way to just run it from the command line, or without all of the fancy mouse stuff? Essentially as --no-windows? Thanks!

  • Remote Desktop and Num Lock

    Whenever I log into my Windows 7 desktop from my Windows 7 laptop using RDC, the Num Lock is enabled on the host computer and it is not disabled after disconnecting. What can I do to stop the Num Lock from being enabled or automatically disable it at the end of the session? (I do not know if this happens only on Windows 7 and have no way of checking, so I went with the generic windows tag)

  • Alt-Escape has different effect on different Win-XP machines

    This is really weird. On my desktop computer, I often use Alt-Escape to send the active window to the background. This is really useful for window management. However, when I try pressing Alt-Escape on my new laptop, it does something similar but not identical: It sends the active window back, but not all the way to the background. i.e., instead of giving it the lowest index number, it just decrements its index number, probably by 1. Both computers have the same Windows XP Professional. Why is this? And how can I make my laptop computer send the active window to the background instead?

  • How to change shortcut keys in Thunderbird 3 for Linux?

    I use Thunderbird on Ubuntu Linux and have just upgraded to Ubuntu 10 / Thunderbird 3. One of my gripes however is that Thunderbird uses a number of shortcut keys that have no secondary key requirements, for example, "Mark as Read" is M. Not ControlM. Just M. Worse, "Mark as Junk" is J. Which means I sometimes inadvertently mark messages as Junk. How can I customize Thunderbird's shortcuts so, for example, "Mark as Junk" is ControlJ?

  • Openoffice.org: Mouse wheel one row at a time possible?

    I noticed this in Excel, now in OpenOffice.org calc. One small change in mouse wheel leads to 3 rows (line) change. Is it possible to change in Calc OR/AND in Excel? EDIT: Yes, I know about system wide setting about the number of lines for one notch of scroll. But in some applications this setting is interpreted related to size in pixels so scrolling is predictable, but for some like spreadsheet is not. Since the height of line in a cell differ depending of the cell content, with other setting as 1 you will have a guarantee of unpredictable content before your eyes with only one notch.

    I work as a developer so I have to use key combinations a lot. And I have HP Envy laptop. And the Ctrl key is broken for the second time. First time I just took one from my friend. But I don't have any more friends who are willing to sacrifice their Ctrl key Anyone know where I can find one? (or rather a bunch because they are so weak and low quality) I tried to contact HP support but they did everything to prevent people from doing it. And it is impossible to reach HP support.     Is there any program (or code, any language) that will mute all of the microphones on my computer? If it is code, please make it as simple as possible, the only language I know is C# and I am still VERY new to it. I just want to setup some way to mute my microphones from a hotkey/shortcut, and if I can just find a program that can do, I will be set. As I said, I can also do a little bit if it is in C#, but the only code I have seen before for this, was miles long (atleast to me). My goal, is I just want a program that opens up, and toggles the mute on the microhpones (all of the system audio input) then closes. That is it, very simple. Thank you to anyone who trys to helps me! EDIT: Yes, I am using Windows. I am using Windows 7 32-bit. I already know that I can go into the volume mixer and do it that way, but I need to do this while running a full screen application, and it is a hassle to have to exit fullscreen, open the volume mixer, the click the mute icon, then go back into full screen and the the whole thing over again to unmute it. And I will be toggling back and forth quite often, so it just takes alot to do that so much.
