Yesterday at MIX Dean (general manager of the IE team) announced the availability of the first IE9 Platform Preview for developers. Dean also committed to updating the preview approximately every eight weeks. There is a good article on Beta News covering some of the technical details of the release. A key part of the announcements was the support for hardware accelerated HTML5 including supporting the video tag with the H.264 codec. ASP.NET MVC Cookbook – public review

I have recently started writing another book. The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC. This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end. It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series. Vdpau performance in Precise with Unity 3d

vdpau seems to be broken in Precise under Unity 3d. CPU usage ranges around 50-70% for 1080p movies while same movies utilizes around 5-10% in Natty with vdpau enabled (under Unity3d) The card is Nvidia G105m. It doesn't seem to be a Nvidia driver problem because in gnome-shell everything works as expected and I have tried different versions of Nvidia drivers (295.20, 295.33, 295.40 and the latest 302.XX from xorg-edgers) The results are all the same, works in Gnome Shell but not in Unity 3d. Disabling syn to vbank works if movie is not in full screen mode, but it doesn't work for full screen. I have searched around and haven't found much info. I am wondering if others are experiencing the same problem and if there are some known work around that I have missed. Unity 3d is otherwise very nice in Precise, but this is a show stopping issue for me (literally). Thanks. I have filed a bug here https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/993397

All day optimizer event....

I've recently taken over some of the responsibilities of Maria Colgan (also known as the "optimizer lady") so she can move onto supporting our new In Memory Database features (note her new twitter handle for that: https://twitter.com/db_inmemory ).To that end, I have two one day Optimizer classes scheduled this year (and more to follow next year!). The first one will be Wednesday November 20th in Northern California. You can find details for that here: http://www.nocoug.org/ .The next one will be 5,500 miles (about 8,800 km) away in the UK - in Manchester. That'll take place immediately following the UKOUG technical conference taking place the first week of December on December 5th. Incremental file system backups

I use Virtual Box a lot for distro / applications testing purposes. One of the features I simply love about it is virtual machines snapshots, its saves a state of a virtual machine and is able to restore it to its former glory if something you did went wrong without any problems and without consuming your all hard disk space. On my live systems I know how to create a 1:1 image of the file system but all the solutions I'v known will create a new image of the complete file system. Are there any programs / file systems that are capable of taking a snapshot of a current file system, save it on another location but instead of making a complete new image it creates incremental backups? To easy describe what I want, it should be as dd images of a file system, but instead of only a full backup it would also create incremental. I am not looking for clonezilla, etc. It should run within the system itself with no (or almost none) intervention from the user, but contain all the data of the file systems.

Programming language features that help to catch bugs early

Do you know any programming language features that help to detect bugs early in the software development process - ideally at compile-time or else as early as possible at run-time? Examples of well-known and effective bug-reducing features are: Static typing and generic types: type incompatibility errors are detected by the compiler Design by Contract (TM), also called Contract Programming: invalid values are quickly detected at runtime (through preconditions, postconditions and class invariants) Unit testing I ask this question in the context of improving an object-oriented programming language (called Obix) which has been designed from the ground up to 'make it easy to quickly write reliable code'. Besides the features mentioned above this language also incorporates other Fail-fast features such as: Objects are immutable by default Void (null) values are not allowed by default The aim is to add more Fail-fast concepts to the language. What is the best Video Conference integrated solution for Us? [closed]

we are trying to integrate a simple Video Conferencing (open source) solution into our existing application which is written in C++ and it runs on Linux. I am currently looking at using Ekiga (formely known as GnomeMeeting) or Homer Conferencing (short: Homer). My plan is to "integrate" an existing Video Conferencing client into our existing software. Please give me recommendation on which 3rd party application or library to use to add video conferencing feature to our application. PS: Please don't close this question. I asked it on StackOverflow and it got closed, so where am I supposed to ask this question? If not here, then whats the point of asking lol.

Learning to optimize with Assembly

I am a second year student of Computer Games Technology. I recently finished my first prototype of my "kind" of own pathfinder (that doesn't use A* instead a geometrical approach/pattern recognition, the pathfinder just needs the knowledge about the terrain that is in his view to make decisions, because I wanted an AI that could actually explore, if the terrain is already known, then it will walk the shortest way easily, because the pathfinder has a memory of nodes). Anyway my question is more general: How do I start optimizing algorithms/loops/for_each/etc. using Assembly, although general tips are welcome. I am specifically looking for good books, because it is really hard to find good books on this topic. There are some small articles out there like this one, but still isn't enough knowledge to optimize an algorithm/game... I hope there is a modern good book out there, that I just couldn't find...

Blogger widgets speed problem

Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons. Almost every post in this blog contains YouTube iframes which aren't nowhere near fast. Are there any well-known solutions for this type of problems? Should I use some jQuery plugins for speed optimization, how can I make the facebook/twitter boxes load faster?

Palm take-over watch

This is just in: HTC is said to be considering taking over Palm. Tales of a corrupt SQL log

Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database. A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file. Easy fix I said, I have daily backups so its just a mater of restoring a good copy of the database and log files. Well, I found out thats not exactly true.
