After a couple of minutes it started to sound similar to buying email marketing list which I know is not something you do.   • Is using HTML entities (for language-specific characters) in UTF-8 necessary?

    As in the subject-line. Saw the situation the other day on a page which felt weird to me. Except for markup-delimiting characters such as pointy brackets or the ampersand, escaping, say, German umlauts shouldn't be necessary, should it? Checked the encoding server-side, in-page and by way of HTTP headers, looks completely UTF-8 to me. What's your take on this and do you reckon it could adversely affect SEO or SERP placement?the page

  • Is the TCP protocol good enough for real-time multiplayer games?

    Back in the day, TCP connections over dialup/ISDN/slow broadband resulted in choppy, laggy games because a single dropped packet resulted in a resync. That meant a lot of game developers had to implement their own reliability layer on top of UDP, or they used UDP for messages that could be dropped or received out of order, and used a parallel TCP connection for information that must be reliable. Given the average user has faster network connections now, can a real time game such as an FPS give good performance over a TCP connection?

What is the best approach to make the system only update the automated data, not the manually edited ones?
