• ATI Catalyst setting to stretch Windows XP start bar across both displays

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? • HP Probook 6550b has issues with an external monitor

  I recently got a new HP Probook 6550b laptop for work. However, very often, when left alone (not put to sleep), the built in display will go dark. Not only that, but whenever I plug in an external monitor, the display will blank out as well. Sometimes after this happens, putting the laptop to sleep and then waking it up solves the problem. But only sometimes and only for a short time. The next time I plug in my monitor, it happens again. I know this isn't only my problem - 6 other people got the same laptop as I have at the same time, and we're all having such issues. Any suggestions as to the root of this problem and a way to fix it? It's driving me crazy!

• Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000 PC resolution slightly off

  I have a PC running two Nvidia 8500 GTs in SLI mode and I am trying to use my TV in dual mode. When I switch the TV to PC the screen is nearly centered with a slight offset. All resolutions are effected from 800x600 all the way up to the TVs native 1360x768. I have tried with SLI on and off and have PhysX turned off as well as I thought that might have an effect. I am running Windows XP 64-bit SP2 DirectX ver 9.0c Nvidia driver version 181.22 Any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance.

• Moving LiveMeeting admin functions to a different window

  I run a user group, and often host LiveMeeting sessions. I use a projector, with a crowd watching. How do I do the admin stuff (respond to Q&A, etc) on one window, and just have the video on the 'extended monitor'? I dont' want the people in the audience to see anything except the video feed, but I want to be able to watch questions come in, etc... Note: I don't have a problem extending the screen across the two monitors - I already have different stuff showing on my screen compared to the projector. I just want a way to put the LM video on Monitor 2 (projector), and the LM controls on Monitor 1.

• Burn more than one ISO to one dvd?

  I just turned 11 CDs with a total of 1gb of stuff into ISOs. Is it possible for me to just burn all the ISO videos into a DVD? Any alternative way for me to do it? Edit: I need to be playable on any DVD player. It's videos for my grandparents. Update: I read that DVD shrink should work (re-authoring software), but I didn't try it because when I imported the VIDEO_TS folders into the software, my video wasn't played widescreen, and I dont' know how to fix it.

• Can I use an nVidia Geforce 9600GT for triple-monitor?

  My work PC has (as you can guess from the title) a single Geforce 9600GT card. According to the spec page for this card, both DVI ports are Dual-Link DVI. Both are currently in use on Dell 19" 1280x1024 screens. I'm running Windows 7, with Aero enabled, for what that's worth. What I'm wondering is if I can use a standard DVI splitter cable to drive a third screen from one of the ports -- specifically a Samsung 22" 1680x1050. I'm really outgrowing the two-screen setup, and am strongly considering bringing in my home monitor (which is almost never used) to bolster my usable space. If I can't, then my alternative is to replace one of these Dells with that Samsung, to give me at least a "little" more space. (Before you ask, there's probably no chance I can get my company to spring for a second video card and third monitor. Even if I could, it would not be politically expedient, as a number of my other coworkers are already pretty jealous at my setup.)

  Working on stored procedure recently which loads records into a data warehouse I found that the existing record was being expired using an update statement followed by an insert to add the new active record. Playing around with the merge statement you can actually expire the current record and insert a new record within one clean statement. This is how the statement works, we do the normal merge statement to insert a record when there is no match, if we match the record we update the existing record by expiring it and deactivating. At the end of the merge statement we use the output statement to output the staging values for the update,  we wrap the whole merge statement within an insert statement and add new rows for the records which we inserted. • Switch monitor configurations on Windows 7

  I use one of my PCs for flight simulation as well as for home theater. In case one it has 2 monitors attached, and in case 2 (home theater) a HD TV is being used. All 3 monitors are attached at the same time to the graphics card. How could it best switch best between different configurations. In case 1 I'd like to have the configuration with monitor 1/2, alternatively I'd like quickly to switch to another config only with the HD TV as primary screen. A similar question has been asked 6 months back with no full solution yet, so I come up with it again. The comment there of Darius (Windows + P key) is the best so far.

• One server with multiple desktops "heads" with VNC

  I am managing a system of kiosks. Each kiosk currently is running a web browser with the application for the kiosk running in the browser. Each kiosk needs to be able to display separate content. At times, the application running in the web browser freezes. Thus, I have to go out to the site to refresh the page. I want to see if there is a way to have one central server that has multiple browser heads. Then each kiosk would run a program like VNC to display one of the heads. This way when the program freezes, I just have to login to the central server and refresh the page. Getting VNC or another remote desktop software installed on the clients is no problem. What I am looking for is a way to have VNC remote into a specific head of a head of a web browser. Does such a thing exist? Or do I have to run a VM for each kiosk to remote into? Any advice, pointers, or solutions would be helpful.

Because the amount of download content made by the iphone users is just too much, our program cannot handle them fast enough. The situation is, the amount of transaction made by users are double of the transaction processed by our program. Most of the running time of the program are dominated by DB transactions. I've search through the internet and browsed some sites ( for example: http://www.javaperformancetuning.com/tips/rawtips.shtml ) talking about java performace in DB, but I cannot find a suggestion suitable for us. these advices are not applicable/already used, for instance: 1)Use prepared statements. Use parametrized SQL Already used prepared statement. Each time will use different parameter by clear parameters and set parameters. 2)Tune the SQL to minimize the data returned (e.g. not 'SELECT *'). Sure, already used. 3)Use connection pooling. We hold a single connection during the program's execution. And I doubt that pooling cannot solve the problem because our program act as 1 user, so there are no problem for concurrent access to DB. If anyone of you think pooling is good, please tell me why. Thanks. 4)Try to combine queries and batch updates. Cannot do it. Every query/insert/update is depend on the database's information. For example, we look up the DB for the client's information, if we cannot find his usage, we insert the usage into DB, otherwise we do update. 5)Close resources (Connections, Statements, ResultSets) when finished Sure. 6)Select the fastest JDBC driver. I don't know. I've search on the internet about the type of driver available and I am very confused. We use oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver and we use thin instead of oci, that's all I know.   I have a laptop that runs Vista Mega Ultimate Amazing for Business 64-bit. When at work, I connect a monitor via USB (which totally rocks) to the "left" of the laptop monitor. It's identified as monitor 3. At home, I use an old CRT monitor that sits to the right of the laptop monitor. It's monitor 2. Monitor 1 is, of course, the inbuilt laptop monitor. Now at home I open a window, any window, on monitor 2. Then I come to work and plug in monitor 3. Anything I had open on monitor 2 is now stuck in unretrievable land. (Actually, it's probably anything that was minimised when I left home that belonged on monitor 2 will expand back onto monitor 2, even though it's disconnected) How can I get those windows back onto connected monitors?

  There's this string containing B, W and G (standing for black, white and gray). It defines the pre-ordered path of the quadtree I want to build. I wrote this method for filling the QuadTree class I also wrote but it doesn't work, it inserts correctly until it reaches a point in the algorithm it needs to "return". I use math quadrants convention order for insertion, such as northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast. • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

  I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

• Can't display at full resolution on an external monitor from my MacBook.

  I have a 24" Asus V246H and a new MacBook ($999 one). I am trying to display to display to my Asus at 1080p via VGA. So I boot up with the lid closed and the external monitor plugged in. Everything boots up fine, but the resolution is really low. So I go in and change the resolution to be 1920x1080. My monitor then has a blue box on it that says "OUT OF RANGE". Lower resolutions like 1024x768 work, but 1680x1050 doesn't. If I try mirroring my displays, the entire external monitor AND the entire laptop screen is completely garbled. I can make out some colors, but it is completely unusable. I am suspecting that it simply won't work via VGA, but I don't want to buy another adapter, and my PC is using the DVI port. Any solutions?

  My setup is two ISPs on a single interface and single network. I can either set my default gateway to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.250 and either work. My desire is to utilize both of them with some load balancing.   This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

• Set up multiple websites on a local web server

  I have spent the last few days setting up a CentOS 6 server on my local network so that I can host multiple projects that I'm currently working on. Everything has been set up so that I access the server by typing 192.168.1.10 and the Apache test page comes up. What I'm aiming to do is to access different projects by typing in 192.168.1.10/project, and then view the project as if it was on it's own standalone server. I have thought about just sticking these sites inside folders on the server then accessing them that way, but a lot of my projects use CakePHP so this isn't feasible. So what I need to do is create VirtualHosts in Apache to allow me to do this, but without using a domain name. I want to stick to using the IP address of the machine (which is static). Any ideas? EDIT I've followed Peter's suggestion, but now I have a new problem. In the httpd.conf file I have entered the following information: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /www/html/project1 ServerName local.project1.com ErrorLog logs/local.project1.com-error_log CustomLog logs/local.project1.com-access_log common </VirtualHost> And now Apache is saying: Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/www/html/project1] does not exist When it clearly does exist. I've disabled SELinux and I can confirm this isn't turned on. I've also checked the ownership of the folder, and its owned by root. I can also save files to these folders using a guest FTP account (which isn't associated to root), so the folders are being listed and can be written to. But when I try the folder in a web browser it doesn't seem to work either. I've also done a reboot of the server and the problem persists. What should I change in order to resolve this?
