• Objective-C library recommendation for AES-256 in CTR mode

  Hello, I'm looking for recommendations on an Objective-C library for AES-256 encryption in CTR mode. I have a database full of data encrypted with another library using CTR and seems the included CCCrypt only supports ECB or CBC with PKCS#7. Any idea on the best portable library I should use? I'm not looking to port the original implementation as I don't have the required knowledge in cryptography and hence, that's-a-bad-idea (tm). Thanks!

• Creating a semi-transparent blurred background WPF

  Hi guys, I have a border, i want the background of this border to be partially transparent (opacity 0.8) but i do not want the image behind it to be well defined. The effect i am after is similar to the Windows Vista window border effect, where you can see that something is behind it but you cant tell what it is. A few clarifications: I am working on Windows XP, so i cant use Vista Glass I need this solution to be portable across any windows platform Any help would be appreciated :)

• Changing the default UITabBarController background color.

  Hello, So I have an iPhone application running that is controlled at the highest level by a UITabBarController. It is the default black Tab Bar at the bottom that you see in many iPhone apps. I am kind of new to iPhone SDK programming, and I know I have seen other apps that have their own background color for the Tab Bar at the bottom. I am not sure if they are using this tab bar as I am, as the main controller for their app, but the question applies to this: How do I change the background color of the main UITabBarController in my application? I wanted to change it to a dark shade of green similar to the colors of the navigation bars and labels I have placed in my app. I find it weird how Apple makes it really easy to change the color of Navigation Bars (not controllers), and other things, but when it comes to controllers (in this case a Tab Bar Controller), I cannot find a single way to implement this cleanly and efficiently. • Get Local IP-Address using Boost.Asio

  Hey, I'm currently searching for a portable way of getting the local IP-addresses. Because I'm using Boost anyway I thought it would be a good idea to use Boost.Asio for this task. There are serveral examples on the net which should do the trick. Examples: Official Boost.Asio Documentation Some Asian Page I tried both codes with just slight modifications. The Code on Boost.Doc was changed to not resolve "www.boost.org" but "localhost" or my hostname instead. For getting the hostname I used boost::asio::ip::host_name() or typed it directly as a string. Additionally I wrote my own code which was a merge of the above examples and my (little) knowledge I gathered from the Boost Documentation and other examples. All the sources worked, but they did just return the following IP: 127.0.1.1 (Thats not a typo, its .1.1 at the end) I run and compiled the code on Ubuntu 9.10 with GCC 4.4.1 A colleague tried the same code on his machine and got 127.0.0.2 (Not a typo too...) He compiled and run on Suse 11.0 with GCC 4.4.1 (I'm not 100% sure) I don't know if it is possible to change the localhost (127.0.0.1), but I know that neither me or my colleague did it. ifconfig says loopback uses 127.0.0.1. ifconfig also finds the public IP I am searching for (141.200.182.30 in my case, subnet is 255.255.0.0) So is this a Linux-issue and the code is not as portable as I thought? Do I have to change something else or is Boost.Asio not working as a solution for my problem at all? I know there are much questions about similar topics on Stackoverflow and other pages, but I cannot find information which is useful in my case. If you got useful links, it would be nice if you could point me to it. • TFS and shared projects in multiple solutions

  Our .NET team works on projects for our company that fall into distinct categories. Some are internal web apps, some are external (publicly facing) web apps, we also have internal Windows applications for our corporate office users, and Windows Forms apps for our retail locations (stores). Of course, because we hate code reuse, we have a ton of code that is shared among the different applications. Currently we're using SVN as our source control, and we've got our repository laid out like this: - = folder, | = Visual Studio Solution -SVN - Internet | Ourcompany.com | Oursecondcompany.com - Intranet | UniformOrdering website | MessageCenter website - Shared | ErrorLoggingModule | RegularExpressionGenerator | Anti-Xss | OrgChartModule etc... So.. The OurCompany.com solution in the Internet folder would have a website project, and it would also include the ErrorLoggingModule, RegularExpressionGenerator, and Anti-Xss projects from the shared directory. Similarly, our UniformOrdering website solution would have each of these projects included in the solution as well. We prefer to have a project reference to a .dll reference because, first of all, if we need to add or fix a function in the ErrorLoggingModule while working on the OurCompany.com website, it's right there. Also, this allows us to build each solution and see if changes to shared code break any other applications. This should work well on a build server as well if I'm correct. In SVN, there is no problem with this. SVN and Visual Studio aren't tied together in the way TFS's source control is. We never figured out how to work this type of structure in TFS when we were using it, because in TFS, the TFS project was always tied to a Visual Studio Solution. The Source Code repository was a child of the TFS Project, so if we wanted to do this, we had to duplicate the Shared code in each TFS project's source code repository. As my co-worker put it, this "breaks every known best practice about code reuse and simplicity". It was enough of a deal breaker for us that we switched to SVN. Now, however, we're faced with truly fixing our development processes, and the Application Lifecycle Management of TFS is pretty close to exactly what we want, and how we want to work. Our one sticking point is the shared code issue. We're evaluating other commercial and open source solutions, but since we're already paying for TFS with our MSDN Subscriptions, and TFS is pretty much exactly what we want, we'd REALLY like to find a way around this issue. Has anybody else faced this and come up with a solution? If you've seen an article or posting on this that you can share with me, that would help as well. As always, I'm open to answers like "You're looking at it all wrong, bonehead, HERE'S the way it SHOULD be done.

• Fiddler not sniffing SOAP traffic from ASP.NET website

  So far I've been successfully using fiddler to sniff web service traffic from both test fixtures, console apps and web projects. Today I noticed I am not able anymore to sniff that kind of traffic if I am running my web application (it's a ASP.NET website, hosted locally on IIS). I see all the local traffic but the web service traffic is just gone (the service is being hit as I do see the response debugging into the code). I am still able to successfully sniff soap requests and responses from test fixtures or console apps in the same solution (exact same environment). If it was a windows (I am on Win7) security update or the likes it would never work I guess (unless it affects only traffic routed through IIS). What should I be looking for that could cause the emergence this behavior? Any pointers appreciated!

The application have a good internet connection and there is no problem reaching the app server-side api. I see in analytics that lots of startups and click-events the past few days are lost, even I know the traffic is normal since i can see statistics from the the server api. In the analytics reports I see a day by day under-reporting. So the problems seems to be spreading/growing to all the devices using this application. Im wondering why google does not answer this in their mail-groups - several people have complained about this...well, well... I found this thread relevant: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/682560/java-net-socketexception-broken-pipe But, I'm still not sure if there is anything I can do to fix it or not. If there is nothing I can do to fix it, I guess its not my fault that it got broken. But i got a feeling it is, since the problem got dramatically worse on the last deploy to Android market. • Silverlight 3 Offline Mode

  Has anyone found that the userbase is more reluctant to install Silverlight 3 Apps in offline mode because they have no control over "where" the app is installed to? I've had a few issues of a similar nature in the past, with 'power users' getting upset that they can't specify install directories. Are there any workarounds? Any way to get the Silverlight offline installs to prompt for specific install locations and the like? The specific reason given is that users want to install apps to remote storage, like a USB stick or something.

• Would the MSFT Report Viewer (rdlc) Work with MVC

  I am interested in learning MVC, and have experimented with a couple of the sample apps. As a project, I'd like to move part or all of my own office app to MVC. An important part of this app, and of ALL of my apps for customers, is the printing of invoices, purchase orders, inventory lists and so forth. In fact, one of their main criteria for judging what we do is the appearance of these documents and their incorporation into the app in a practical, intuitive way. It's impossible for me to get by without a report writer. The MSFT report viewer used to produce rdlc reports has been sufficient, and even comes up better than the competition in a couple of key areas. Does this control work with an ASP.NET MVC application?

• Odd Drag and drag bug in nested attributes Rails

  I've got this weird bug when trying to use drag and drag for two models (one nested within another). I've a category model which has many apps. In my category index page, I tried use "content_tag_for" to sort categories and apps within each category. But for some odd reason only the first element has drag, drop enabled. I can drag and drop categories all I want, but I can't drag the app in the second category, just the first category. Copy and paste gets ridiculously hopeless with HAML, so here's a Pastie instead. I made a sample app on heroku for you to check out here. Drag and drag work for both category and app, so I'm guessing it has to do something with the ul or li. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• What can't I build in Silverlight?

  First, I know that Silverlight needs to be embedded in a website, usually an asp page. I understand I need a delivery boy. My question is this; What types of apps/projects are so filled with technological hurdles as to make them ridiculous to do in Silverlight versus ASP.net? I know that with perseverance and flexibility I can probably make EVERY app in Silverlight, in some version or another, but which ones would be blatantly simple in, say ASP.net(or even WPF) but quite complicated in Silverlight? Basically what I am asking is if there is any reason I shouldn't consider Silverlight my first stop for every problem, obvious exceptions not with standing(a service or console). For me specifically, at this point, I am only building in house apps.

  Seems like this would be a common question, though I could not find it on SO. Which version of MSXML should I use in my applications, and more importantly, how should I decide? There is MSXML3, 4, 5 and 6. I recently posted some code in calling-wcf-service-by-vbscript that used MSXML v4. AnthonyWJones posted that I shouldn't use 4, but instead 3 or 6, but probably 3. Certainly not v5! Why? I'd like to know more about the criteria for selecting the version of MSXML to use in my apps. Bonus question: Does anyone have a summary of the differences between the various versions of MSXML over time? Summary so far: MSXML6 Should be first choice. was released in 2006, and includes perf and compliance fixes. Use this if you can. It's good. There are no merge modules; to bundle the MSXML6 runtime with your app, MS suggests packaging the MSXML6 msi file. MSXML6 is an upgrade from MSXML3/4 but does not replace them, because it discontinues some features. You can get the MSI here. MSXML3 Second choice. Most widely deployed version. Originally shipped in March 2000. Actively maintained, no new features. Currently supported, if you are on SP5 (shipped in 2005) or later. SP7 is current (also from 2005). MSXML5 was released only as part of MS-Office. Currently supported by Microsoft, but only as part of Office, not for building apps. Don't build apps that depend on MSXML5: Verboten. MSXML4 originally shipped? Currently in "maintenance mode". Microsoft is encouraging people to move off MSXML4 to MSXML6. Currently supported if you are on MSXML4SP2 or later, which shipped in 2003. download MSXML4SP2 here. Can be redisributed. Using the right version of MSXML in Internet Explorer is a good entry on the blog from Microsoft's xmlteam.

• Is there a simple way for opening one (or many) opengl window in mac OS X with C++ ?

  Yes, I hate Objective-c, plus my project will be portable, so I'd like to code as much of it in C++ as possible, ideally 100%. So I have a regular C++ project made with Xcode, and want to open some OpenGL windows. edit: Damn, Glut takes over the app's control with glutMainLoop(), pretty much as SDL does, I'm trying to break free from that schemes. Will try freeglut, although I can't find OSX binaries, and I always have such bad luck trying to compile someone else's code.

• Learn MacRuby or Objective-C?

  Well, my fisrt question was a bit too general so i ll try again and hope this one is better. The way i see it is: Ruby-MacRuby or IronRuby or Rails Obj-c-Mac Development So Ruby has clearly more potential in desktop and web platforms and now with MacRuby, OSX native (and commercial) apps are on the way. If i get it wrong please correct me. For me that i will do a fresh start should i go with the modern Ruby or start learning c+obj-c? Will a newcomer benefit much (in learning & coding time, frustration, complexity) by learning/using macruby for osx apps rather objective-c? Or its pretty much the same? I hope some day to hang around here and help others.

  I have read that boost iostreams supposedly supports 64 bit access to large files semi-portable way. Their FAQ mentions 64 bit offset functions, but there is no examples on how to use them. Has anyone used this library for handling large files? A simple example of opening two files, seeking to their middles, and copying one to the other would be very helpful. Thanks.
