• where does the professional sheen of a GUI application realistically come from?

  I have been playing around with php-gtk recently and in the past I have experimented with Java to make GUI 'hello world' apps. However both these types of applications have had a bit of a clunky (almost childish) look and feel to them. I cannot deny that they are handy for making apps for in-house use (and I totally respect the amount of community effort that goes into these projects). But I would not necessarily be proud to sell it as a commercial application with a price tag of, say, £450 or £1,000. If I wanted to make an application that had the look and feel of, say, Firefox for Windows, or Adobe xyz, what GUI/language should I use? Is the 'professional sheen' or smart look and feel down to the designer or is it the case that, no matter how good a designer is, picking the right GUI framework is essential to get that look?

• Building elf within Eclipse

  Hey guys, I'm having trouble building an Elf file within Eclipse. It seems that everytime I build, a PE / portable executable for windows is created. I've gone into the Binary Parser section and checked Elf Parser while making sure that everything else is unchecked. However, I continue to end up with a PE which I cannot run on Linux. Any ideas?   In my quest to improve my PowerShell skills, here's an example of an ugly solution to a simple problem. Any suggestions how to improve the oneliner are welcome. Mission: trim a huge icon library down to something a bit more manageable. The original directory structure looks like this: /Apps and Utilities /Compile /32 Bit Alpha png /Compile 16 n p.png /+ 10 or more files /+ 5 more formats with 10 or more files each /+ 20 or so icon names /+ 22 more categories I want to copy the 32 Bit Alpha pngs and flatten the directory structure a bit. Here's my quick and very dirty solution: $dest = mkdir c:\icons; gci -r | ? { $_.Name -eq '32 Bit Alph a png' } | % { mkdir ("$dest\" + $_.Parent.Parent.Name + "\" + $_.Parent.Name); $_ } | gci | % { cp $_. • Why is ARG_MAX not defined via limits.h?

  On Fedora Core 7, I'm writing some code that relies on ARG_MAX. However, even if I #include <limits.h>, the constant is still not defined. My investigations show that it's present in <sys/linux/limits.h>, but this is supposed to be portable across Win32/Mac/Linux, so directly including it isn't an option. What's going on here?

• NHibernate and SetSessionAuth audit columns

  We have audit columns set by triggers. For obscure security reasons predating my tenure and out of my control, we log in with a generic user, and do a 'set session authorization' to change the user to the db user of the user who is logged in. When we converted to NHibernate, it creates a whole new session and jacks everything up when we try to do a set session auth, so we turned the set session auth off... Now we are trying to find out a way to get NHibernate to let us do 'set session authorization' without recycling the session on us, so we can use our existing trigger based audit column stuff with both legacy apps, and our new NHibernate apps. It's not a ideal soloution, or the best way to do it even, but is it possible? I was hoping there was a alternate interface that allowed this kind of access. Does anyone know how to do it, or can you point me towards and good hints? Thanks, Eric-

• iPhone tethering app source

  I know there are a few apps that allow a jail broken iPhone to tether over WiFi to a computer so the computer can use the iPhone's 3G. What I want to know is if anyone knows of any open source apps that do this, or partial code to handle the majority of this that I could make in to a minimal app? I don't want to jail break since I do official development, but would like to be able to compile and sideload an app on my personal phone to do this. Even without jail broken privileges an app could use an existing wifi connection (adhoc created by the computer) to share its 3G.

• .Net OutOfMemory on Server but not Desktop

  Is it possible that the .Net framework behaves differently when it comes to garbage collection / memory limitations on server environments? I am running explicitly x86 compiled apps on a 64bit server machine with 32gbs of physical ram and I am running out of memory (SystemOutOfMemoryException) even though nothing but that particular app is running and the server/all other apps utilize 520mb total.. but I cannot reproduce that behaviour on my own (client win7) machine. Now I know that the app -is- memory intensive, but why is it causing problems on the server and not on the client?

• Is ORM (Linq, Hibernate...) really that useful?

  I have been playing with some LINQ ORM (LINQ directly to SQL) and I have to admit I like its expressive powers . For small utility-like apps, It also works quite fast: dropping a SQL server on some surface and you're set to linq away. For larger apps however, the DAL never was that big of an issue to me to setup, nor maintain, and more often than not, once it was set, all the programming was not happening there anyway... My, honest - I am an ORM newbie - question : what is the big advantage of ORM over writing a decent DAL by hand? • RAD Visual Web Application Creator/ Builder/ Designer for PHP

  Hi all, I want to see if any of you know a (free and open source will be ideal) tool/ app that can help build a php web application very quickly without investing too much time on writing codes, preferring drag and drop/ point and click work-flow designer for logic design (see Agile from Outsystems below). Plus, visual designer for the business logic is great since it can help a developer visualize the logic better. There are a lot of GUI builders, form builders out there, but I am looking for one app for the entire web application development process. My goal is to find an application that a team of developers can use together and use the build-in code of the app as much as possible. E.g. the app will provide a modular just for handle user login or a shopping cart; a developer just need to drag and drop the modular to the logic designer and the code will be generated. This way the functionality will be in a module and code will always be standard across developers. So if a new developer get on-board, he will just need to use the system and get up and running quickly. To explain this better: there is a lot php frameworks, e.g. cakephp, CodeIgniter, etc which I can use to help coding, but still I need to create (code) the GUI, writing quite a bit of codes. I am looking for a tool/ app that is a little more high level than those frameworks. Here is 2 examples apps I found during my google search which they have visual logic designer and gui builder in one single app. Also a single click deployment (but I need it to be php apps or at least I can deploy the (php) code to a LAMP/ WAMP server): Wavemaker: for JAVA Agile from Outsystems: for JAVA or .net (This one is really good, with work-flow drag and drop logic designer!) Talend: it is just an ETL tool, but the concept is what I want to bring up. Drag and drop, point and click logic design. Custom code can be added if it is needed, but the drag and drop process already finished the structure and most of the coding of the web app one needs to build. I want to list Adobe Flex, but it is more like a GUI designer + IDE, not exactly what I want to describe here. The drag and drop/ work-flow logic designer is a key for the app. I could go for the CMS route by learning how to extend them, but it is not that flexible for me and is a long learning curve. Anybody came across this type of app before? Or any idea of how can I find those apps? I googled them for long time, I don't see any of them for php and just few (just 2) for Java.   Never been a lisp user, so don't take me as too dense while reading this. But what is lisp used for today ? I know there are several variants of the language in existence, at least one which will keep it alive commercially for a while longer (AutoLisp, VisualLisp - pretty big support from Autodesk) ... but I don't meet everyday people using it. So if you can shed some light on the matter - what is it's primary target market nowadays ? And what do you believe its future will be ... will it become just another support language in few apps, or is it going somewhere ? Also, apart from "an editor whose name shall not be spoken" what other apps keep it as a support language ?

• Possibility to introduce iPad capability for iPhone-App via Update?

  Hi there. There has been a lot of talk around iPad-Apps / Approval / Store-related Questions. I've recently built an App which I'm just about to release / send to Apple for approval. I'm thinking about developing a dedicated iPad-App as well. Now, in order to not have two seperate Apps in the Store (one for the iPhone, one for the iPad) i want to create an universal-App for both platforms. However, i couldn't figure out if it is possible to first send in my iPhone-only app and later publish an update that enables my app to run on both platforms. • A Good Final High School AP Computer Science Programming Project?

  Hey guys this question might seem very specific but I am in need of some ideas for a project to do for my last month or so in my AP Computer Science class. I've been looking at some college final ideas and a lot of them just seem plain boring. At first I thought about writing a IRC client in JAVA but I wouldn't really be learning anything "new" that would help me in the future. Then I thought about doing IPhone/touch apps (I don't have an adroid phone and I can easily get my hands on an itouch) but I would need ideas to make apps for that. I want to do something that is going to feel trivial and need some explanation but will also help me in the long run learning new concepts in computer science. If you guys could help out I would greatly appreciate it. I really only have a month to do this project so try to keep the project inside of that range. Also, I don't mind learning new languages. • Function testing on Netbeans 6.8

  While not a torrent, but some articles can be found on the net about function testing (particularly http://blogs.sun.com/geertjan/entry/gui_testing_on_the_netbeans). However the tools mentioned by them do not seem to be maintained, or don't have a plugin working with the most recent version of Netbeans (6.8). Do you have any function test setup for GUI? What is your level of integration into the development process (IDE integration, ant, etc). Additional candy is that Netbeans is not only the IDE, but the GUI app is also developed for Netbeans 6.8 Platform (so I'm mainly interested in GUI testing NB-platform apps, but tips for any Swing apps in general would be a help too).

• Font choices in International scenarios: multilingual vs unicode

  I have a website that will eventually display multiple languages. I notice the common fonts used in web CSS (ex: Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, Tahoma) and even the newer Vista/Office 2007/VS2008 fonts (Calibri,Cambria, Candara, Corbel, etc) are significantly larger (~350K) than your average (US only?) TTF font (~50k) so these fonts contain most/all the major character sets that common languages (Spanish, French, German, etc) use. My question is, would somebody confirm that these fonts listed above are acceptable for international use of the major (let's say top 8) spoken languages? If so, then I'm guessing the only purpose of unicode fonts; such "Arial Unicode" (a massive 22mb) is only for dealing with extremely niche dialog, eastern glyphs (Chinese, Japanese) and dead languages? I'm just looking for some confirmation from developers that have their desktop apps/web apps rendering multiple languages and have a visual confirmation, I'm already in the 99% sure bin but you know what they say about assumption.
