• Dreamweaver 8 Not Starting on Ubuntu 10.04

  I've been trying to start Dreamweaver 8 in Wine with winetricks installed in Ubuntu 10.04LTS and it would simply show that it was loading and then stop, so I decided to try in the terminal to see what I would get and I recieve. wine Dreamweaver.exe err:module:attach_process_dlls "odbc32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\Macromedia\\Dreamweaver 8\\Dreamweaver.exe" failed, status c0000005 doxramos@doxramos-laptop:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8$ odbc32.dll is installed within the libraries and is in my System32 Folder inside of Wine. Does anyone know what could cause this issue? Thanks in advance.

• Why do we keep using CSV?

  Why do we keep using CSV? I recently made a shift to working the health domain and despite the wonderful work in data transfer standards, all data transfer is in CSV, both for reporting to external organisations, and for data migrations when implementing new systems. Unfortunately the use of CSV is the cause of the endless repetition of the same stupid errors, with the same waste of developer time. (bad escaping, failing to handle null fields etc.) I know we can do better, and anything between JSON and XML (depending on the instance) would be fine. (Most of the time this is data going from one MS SQLserver 2005 to another!) I feel as if each time I see this happening I am literally watching one developer waste anothers time. So why do we keep shafting each other? When will we stop?

• Why make JavaScript class based?

  JavaScript is a prototype language. To turn it into a class based language adds little value? I am not talking about best-practice here. I remember reading an article from way back, which claimed that the class-based worldview is perceivably more flawed than the one of prototypes. I am resisting to use the class-based jQuery add-on and other attempts at faciliating class-based JavaScript. Peer pressure is strong but is there a stronger theoretical or practical reason why I stop resisting?

• Network does not connect at boot

  I am on Ubuntu 12.04, fresh install. When I boot a machine, the boot screen says Connecting to network, later it is changed to something like Did not connect, trying for another 60s. However, the network does not connect at the boot. But I can then log in without a network connection, and if I start a network manager service manually from the terminal (sudo service network-manager start), the network is connected without any problems. Please, does anybody know where the problem could be? I don't want to wait more than two minutes every computer restart :-). I am new to Ubuntu (and also to upstart) so I am a bit lost. There is no /var/log/messages, in dmesg I found this record, though it may not be related: init: network-interface (eth1) pre-start process (492) terminated with status 1 init: network-interface (eth1) post-stop process (548) terminated with status 1 Thanks Daniel

• Migrating Virtual Iron guest to Oracle VM 3.x

  As stated on the official site, Oracle in 2009, acquired a provider of server virtualization management software named Virtual Iron; you can find all the acquisition details at this link. Into the FAQ on the official site you can also view that, for the future, Oracle plans to fully integrate Virtual Iron technology into Oracle VM products, and any enhancements will be delivered as a part of the combined solution; this is what is going on with Oracle VM 3.x. So, customers started asking us to migrate Virtual Iron guests to Oracle VM. IMPORTANT: This procedure needs a dedicated OVM-Server with no-guests running on top; be careful while execute this procedure on production environments. In these little steps you will find how-to migrate, as fast as possible, your guests between VI ( Virtual Iron ) and Oracle VM; keep in mind that OracleVM has a built-in P2V utility ( Official Documentation )  that you can use to migrate guests between VI and Oracle VM. Concepts: VI repositories.  On VI we have the same "repository" concept as in Oracle VM; the difference between these two products is that VI use a raw-lun as repository ( instead of using ocfs2 and its capabilities, like ref-links ). The VI "raw-lun" repository, with a pure operating-system perspective, may be presented as in this picture: Infact on this "raw-lun" VI create an LVM2 volume-group.   I am learning LWJGL so i can start working on my game. In order to learn LWJGL I got the idea to implement the map builder so I can get comfortable with graphics programming. Now, for the map creation tool I need to draw new elements or draw the old one's with different coordinates. Let me explain this: My game will be a 2D scroller. The map will be consisting of multiple rectangles ( 2 strip triangles). When I click my left-mouse button i want to start the rectangle and when I release it I want to stop the rectangle bottom-right at that position. As I want to use VBOs I want to know how to modify data inside the VBO based on user input. Should i have a copy of a vertex array and then add the whole array to the VBO at each user input? How is usually implemented the VBO update?

• watchdog/0 process using all my CPU suddenly

  I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04, I have been running it for about a week. Suddenly today I noticed my computer freezes every 5 seconds. I restarted the computer and I still get this. I believe it is a process called watchdog/0 that is using all the resources. See the attached pictures. How can I stop this? I can barely use my computer like this. UPDATE Well I just did a cold reboot, (shutdown, unplug, and plug back in, and turn on) and it seems to have fixed it. After looking at the man page for watchdog, it seems that this process may stay on during a restart? so it is more like a soft restart? Why that happens I don't know.

• Arabic disappeared after 12.04 upgrade!

  Well, I was amongst the 12.04 Beta upgraders, and since then I've lost the ability to write in Arabic, and I've been using Ubuntu since 2008 as an only OS without any issues, and been upgrading since then as well, except on this machine, which received one upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and it got messed up. I've added Arabic like usual, but it doesn't change with the keyboard's short-cut, and when I do it manually with the Mouse, then it just doesn't work, and it keeps writing in English instead. I've tried to install some iBus things, and added Arabic-kbd (m17n) but it still remains messy, let alone not having the same layout, and all I want is to get to NORMAL. So, please, is there any way to reset or initialize these keyboard related settings, so I can get back to normal and stop using the Mac just to type in Arabic, or so often using XP over Vbox? And please, no Re-install option! I just can't backup all my work right now, and there are a lot of tasks waiting for me to get them done. Thanks for any kind of support :)

• Just being hired as a senior developer, never even been a junior developer, what should I expect?

  I've been a freelancer and a coder by night for a while, and recently, I've been hired after several levels of interviews in a nice NY company, even though I've some lacks in specific fields. Is this common for companies to hire seniors with less experience? Will they wait some weeks to respect a certain learning curve? I don't know anything about working in a company, so that's why I worry. After one week, I'm still checking and exploring sources, but after one week of work, it seems that some coworkers are considering that I'm slow. I'm good in maths, physics, algorithms, but still I need to learn about all the templates used in this company. Anyone here already received a less-experienced senior member in his team? Is this acceptable? I'm planing on having a meeting with my boss to stop worrying about that. Sounds like a good idea?

• ubiquity "hangs" after hitting first "forward" button

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu but, no matter what I try (wifi connected, wifi not connected, disk blank, disk prepartitioned...), it just "hangs" at the first window (pick your language) with a non-stop hourglass after hitting "forward". This is on a Stinkpad T42. Shouldn't ubiquity at least tell me what's going on? I tried to find a log but /var/log/installer* isn't present. Initiating ubiquity from command line doesn't provide any debug info either. Even when using --debug or other combinations.

• webmaster tools 500 crawl error for asp faceted navigation that does not exist

  i am getting 2,500 type 500 url errors in google webmaster tools. These pages are faceted navigation results that can not be reached by a site visitor. These pages do not exist. We are using faceted navigation with the Volusion platform (asp.net, I think). I have specified url parameters in webmaster tools so that google will not try to index anything faceted. This does not stop the errors from generating. I am concerned about how this might effect seo (bleeding page rank). I can provide additional information if needed. I am not sure how to solve this. I have started down the path of creating 301's, but having some difficulty there as well.

• Cannot login via Unity login screen after upgrade to 12.04

  Logging in via the shell accessed through Ctrl+Alt-F1 and logging in as guest via the graphical user interface work 0O When I try to log into my standard user account via the graphical interface, the screen flashes to black for a couple of seconds and bumps me back to a pristine login screen. Entering a wrong password for my user account yields the standard error message - my user account and credential verification seem to be OK. I suppose that my individual graphics configuration causes problems ... I'm not sure how to reset that. I've tried stopping the UI via sudo service lightdm stop executed sudo nvidia-xconfig and restarted the UI sudo service lightdm start to no avail. My workstation has a Nvidia GeForce 560-448 graphics card. I've tried getting this fixed with the latest Nvidia 64-bit drivers (cURL'ed from the official website), that is 295.49 and the latest beta driver 302.07. Anybody have an idea how to get this fixed? Your help is appreciated :)

  I want to create to deploy a heartbeat service (a python script) as a service using Upstart. My understanding is that I've to add a /etc/init/myheartbeatservice.conf with the following contents. # my heartbeat service description "Heartbeat monitor" start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /path/to/my/python/script.py end script My script starts another service process and the monitors the processes and sends heartbeat to an outside server regularly. Are startup and shutdown the correct events ? Also my script create a new thread. I'm assuming I also need to add fork daemon to my conf file? Thanks.

• How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries. • 1 to 1 Comparison and Ranking System

  I'm looking to create a comparison and ranking system which allows users to view 2 items, click on the one that they feel is the better one and then get presented with 2 more random items and continue to do this until they decide to stop. In the background, I want the system to use these wins and loses to rank each item in an overall ranking table so I can then see what is #1 and what isn't. I haven't got a clue where to begin with the formula, but I image I need to log wins and loses. Any help/direction appreciated!

• Android, OpenGL and extending GLSurfaceView?

  This question is part-technical, part-meta, part-subjective and very specific: I'm an indie game dev working on android, and for the past 6 months I've struggled and finally succeeded in making my own 3D game app for android. So I thought I'd hop on SO and help out others struggling with android and openGL-ES However, the vast majority of questions relate to extending GLSurfaceView. I made my whole app without extending GLSurfaceView (and it runs fine). I can't see any reason at all to extend GLSurfaceView for the majority of questions I come across. Worse, the android documentation implies that you ought to, but gives no detailed explaination of why or what the pros/cons are vs not extending and doing everything through implementing your own GLSurfaceView.Renderer as I did Still, the sheer volume of questions where the problem is purely to do with extending GLSurfaceView is making me wonder whether actually there is some really good reason for doing it that way vs the way I've been doing it (and suggesting in my answers to others to do). So, is there something I'm missing? Should I stop answering questions in the meantime? Android openGL documentation
