• Windows 7 detects my 1 TB disk as a disk with only 31 MB space

  I've added another 1 TB Western Digital disk on my computer (there is a disk with 250 GB already), and after booting to Windows 7, it recognise the disk, but in the Disk Management panel, it says the disk has only 31 MB TOTAL space, so is what it shows in the EVEREST information. And when I rebooted the computer and entered BIOS, it said the new disk has 0 MB disk capacity. Is there any way to fix this problem?

• MacBook Pro battery capacity 65K mAh

  I have a 15" MacBook Pro 3.1 (that is Late 2007 model AFAIR). I've bought it new a couple of years ago. Recently its on-battery power lifespan became very short (30 to 10 minutes). When my notebook turns itself off due to "low battery" and I press the small button on the battery itself, all LED lights are alight, indicating full charge. When I plug in the power adapter, my Mac displays that "battery is fully charged, finishing charging process" (I have a Russian OS X 10.5.7, so that is a rough translation), but the LEDs on battery itself display (seemingly accurate) status that there are one or two "LEDs still not charged". My battery have as few as 37 recharge cycles (yes, I've neglected calibration over the time I've used it). Battery info programs like iBatt2 report battery capacity of 65 337 mAh (with by-design capacity of 5600 mAh). I get it that something went wrong with battery electronics. I've tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and SMC, it did not changed anything. Now I'm trying to recalibrate the battery, but looks like it does not help as well. Will try to recalibrate it several times in a row. I'd buy a new battery if I knew if it is battery fault, not a notebook's. Any suggestions? Update: After recalibration, my battery status now displays battery capacity of 1500 mAh. But with every recalibration (or simply when I use notebook without power adapter plugged in) this number changes in the range from 200 mAh to 1700 mAh. LEDs on battery now are synchronous with what nodebook thinks on the charge level. Also I've noticed that cycle count changes rather slowly. It is now 39, it was 37 when I've started recalibration, and I went through the process at least ten times... So, the main question is: does it look like that replacing the battery would help me (or does it look like this is notebook's problem)? I guess I should try replacing the battery.

• User Profile cannot be loaded - Windows 7

  After uninstalling an HP Vector Mouse driver, then rebooting, when Windows tries to auto log me in, i get an error message saying tyhe following: The User Profile Service failed the Login. User Profile cannot be loaded. Due to the fact that it is the only account on this PC, I cannot even go into another account. I rebooted the machine several times, before going into Safe Mode with Networking. For some reason, I cannot create a new account whilst in safe mode (I think it is to do with UAC, nothing with UAC is clickable). Thus, I am stuck. I cannot get into my account, nor can I create a new one to copy files over to. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ryan EDIT: System Restore was, for some reason turned off. Thus, I cannot restore to a working point.

It seems that Excel is using a question mark as a wild card and will turn all cells with at least one character in them red. How can i escape the question mark? These don't seem to work: "?" \? • Networked Parallel Port in Linux / KVM / QEMU

  What I want to use is the "-parallel" tcp or udp option from KVM / QEMU, but I don't seem to find any server for this client. I don't serve a printer but a hardware dongle. I checked ser2net, which does provide "/dev/lp0" sharing, but it doesn't seem to work for KVM / QEMU. I suspect KVM / QEMU requires "/dev/parport0". I did rmmod lp, modprobe ppdev, linked ser2net to parport0, but it didn't work out. Perhaps ser2net is not suited for this. I tried socat as well, and I tried netcat. No success. Does anyone know any KVM / QEMU compatible parallel port server? Or did any of netcat, socat or ser2net work for you?

• Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

  I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM). So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine. I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' 'Choose other options' 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch. Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device. Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

  I am going to build a full height server machine to be used for SQL Server 2008 64bit. I have $400 to spend for a CPU. Which CPU should I get among i5, i7, Xeon and Phenom in terms of performance. There are so many options and I am out of touch with the latest stuff. All I know I want something fast and works with DDR3 fast memory and works with some kind of fast system bus. I don't care about overclocking, 3D & gfx benchmarks. The machine is not used for games and gfx apps. Any recommendations?

• Windows Vista/7: Managing multiple audio playback devices

  I've got speakers (audio in) and headphones (USB headset with it's own soundcard) connected to my desktop computer. Under Windows 7, I can right-click the Audio Mixer and select Playback Devices and toggle between my these devices. Is there an easier way, perhaps a keyboard shortcut, that would make it easier to toggle? I'm working in an shared space were sometimes I want headphones to avoid annoying other people, but at other times speakers are OK. I want to be able to toggle quickly. In an ideal world, the solution to my question would work in Vista too.

• Windows 7 Reading Proper Disk Usage Statistics on Mounted Volumes

  I'm running windows 7 with 2 x 1.5 TBYTE Drives. The second internal drive is setup as a mounted volume as C:\Archives Clicking computer icon in windows explorer, it only shows capacity stats for C: and Not C:\Archives Also, the usage stats that do show for C: show to be 100% capacity red - yet the system runs fine. No warnings. Can someone explain this? I do have a lot of stuff on the c: drive, but I'm sure its not 1.5 TB worth and C:\Archives hardly has anything it. Thanks! Troy

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. • eMachine W5243 won't POST; fans run but optical drive will not open.

  Symptoms are what is described in the title. The machine reacts to the power button being hit by spinning up the two fans: CPU and PSU. The hard drive (SATA) spins up as well. No other reaction. This one symptom is particularly weird, though: the optical drive will not open with the IDE cable attached, but if I unplug it from the mobo it will. I can turn the PC on with it attached, won't open; then unplug IDE while it is still on, WILL open; then plug IDE back in with the PC STILL ON, WON'T open. I have disconnected every peripheral unnecessary to POST. These include: mouse/keyboard, PCI modem, the IDE optical drive (power and data), and the SATA HDD (power and data). Video is onboard. The only two things connected are DB15 video and power cable. There were 2 512 MB DDR2 sticks of RAM in it. I have tried running it with just one of them, then switched the other in. Currently seated is a completely different 1 GB stick that I keep around for troubleshooting purposes, and I have tried it in both slots. I have replaced the CMOS battery with a used one I had lying around, and which worked in the computer it came out of. I have tested the PSU with a tester to confirm it was good, then tried connecting another PSU just in case--same symptoms. I have even tried a suggestion I found elsewhere on this site wherein one disconnects power from the PSU and then presses the PC's power button twice, thereby "resetting" the PSU. Currently I am trying yet another suggestion: turn it on and wait an inordinate amount of time for POST. Any help would be appreciated.

• Java file manager won't load in Firefox

  I am using Webmin and I can't get the file manager to load in Firefox. It is a simple, Java based file manager. When I try to load it I get the following error: This module requires java to function, but your browser does not support java Internet Explorer works fine and I have yet to try on Chrome. Java is installed and I have the same problem on Windows and Linux. Java seems to work fine with everything else, with the exception of webcams. Any advice on the issue would be appreciated. Edit: I just checked and it doesn't work in Chrome either.

• How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

  One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. • Sony Vaio CPU fan runs at full speed after installing Windows 8.1 preview

  I installed the Windows 8.1 preview on my Sony Vaio E Series 14P (http://www.sony.com.au/product/sve14a27cg) and now my CPU fan is running at full speed all the time. When I first start my computer it runs normally, but a few seconds after reaching the Windows login screen the fan speed will suddenly jump up to max. It's pretty loud, so I'm hoping there's a solution! I've tried updating my bios to the latest version but that didn't help. I've tried programs like SpeedFan, but that wasn't able to detect my CPU fan at all. My CPU usage and temperature is normal and doesn't warrant the max fan speed.   When I ssh between different pcs I can omit my username (tom) and just type ssh pc_name instead of ssh tom@pc_name I like this feature, and have got into the habit of using it. Unfortunately, on one of my computers I went for the user name tommy. Everytime I connect to this computer I forget to write tommy@creative_pc and wonder why my password doesn't work. Is there a way to tell ssh what user name to use when the username is omitted? Edit: Just found the following question that is similar: How to make ssh log in as the right user?   I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you.
