  • Linux with winbind, disable local users while AD is available?

    Routers and switches with RADIUS authentication can be configured such that login is disabled for locally configured users as long as the RADIUS server is available. If the RADIUS server becomes unavailable, they fall back to allowing login as a locally configured user. Is it possible to achieve the same effect with Linux machines using winbind to authenticate Active Directory users? I have a feeling it could be done with the right PAM configuration, but I'm not very far along on the PAM learning curve...

    I've had a few issues where users have mistakenly created public synonyms which have led to people thinking some objects are in one schema when they're actually in another schema. Everyone knows they should be using private synonyms, but occasionally they forget or they make a mistake and someone gets burned. Is it possible to GRANT users the permission to create private synonyms but disallow public ones?

  • How would I prevent users from logging in a PC while software is installing?

    So I currently am looking for a solution to keeping users logged out while software is installing or activating a pop-up message that cannot be moved, closed, and is always on top, because sometimes when we deploy software to users (via SCCM), the parameters of the install require the user to be logged out for the duration of the installation. I've looked at trying to customize the group policy for account lockout but with no luck. Anyone know of any programs or scripts that do this? Thank you!

I ask this because: I plan to use Windows 8 on my desktop, and I want to get the full use of any applications I download. I want to ensure that if I ever release any application I develop to the windows store that there is a way for my users to get around this situation (no touchscreen for multitouch events).

  • SQL SERVER – Simple Example to Configure Resource Governor – Introduction to Resource Governor

    Let us jump right away with question and answer mode. What is resource governor? Resource Governor is a feature which can manage SQL Server Workload and System Resource Consumption. We can limit the amount of CPU and memory consumption by limiting /governing /throttling on the SQL Server. Why is resource governor required? If there are different workloads running on SQL Server and each of the workload needs different resources or when workloads are competing for resources with each other and affecting the performance of the whole server resource governor is a very important task. What will be the real world example of need of resource governor? Here are two simple scenarios where the resource governor can be very useful. Scenario 1: A server which is running OLTP workload and various resource intensive reports on the same server. The ideal situation is where there are two servers which are data synced with each other and one server runs OLTP transactions and the second server runs all the resource intensive reports. However, not everybody has the luxury to set up this kind of environment. In case of the situation where reports and OLTP transactions are running on the same server, limiting the resources to the reporting workload it can be ensured that OTLP’s critical transaction is not throttled. Scenario 2: There are two DBAs in one organization. One DBA A runs critical queries for business and another DBA B is doing maintenance of the database. At any point in time the DBA A’s work should not be affected but at the same time DBA B should be allowed to work as well. The ideal situation is that when DBA B starts working he get some resources but he can’t get more than defined resources. Does SQL Server have any default resource governor component? Yes, SQL Server have two by default created resource governor component. 1) Internal –This is used by database engine exclusives and user have no control. 2) Default – This is used by all the workloads which are not assigned to any other group. What are the major components of the resource governor? Resource Pools Workload Groups Classification In simple words here is what the process of resource governor is. Create resource pool Create a workload group Create classification function based on the criteria specified Enable Resource Governor with classification function Let me further explain you the same with graphical image. Is it possible to configure resource governor with T-SQL? Yes, here is the code for it with explanation in between.   • Emacs: methods for debugging python

    I use emacs for all my code edit needs. Typically, I will use M-x compile to run my test runner which I would say gets me about 70% of what I need to do to keep the code on track however lately I've been wondering how it might be possible to use M-x pdb on occasions where it would be nice to hit a breakpoint and inspect things. In my googling I've found some things that suggest that this is useful/possible. However I have not managed to get it working in a way that I fully understand.   • Should I group all of my .js files into one large bundle?

    One of the difficulties I'm running into with my current project is that the previous developer spaghetti'd the javascript code in lots of different files. We have modal dialogs that are reused in different places and I find that the same .js file is often loaded twice. My thinking is that I'd like to just load all of the .js files in _Layout.cshtml, and that way I know it's loaded once and only once. Also, the client should only have to download this file once as well. It should be cached and therefore shouldn't really be a performance hit, except for the first page load. I should probably note that I am using ASP.Net bundling as well and loading most of the jQuery/bootstrap/etc from CDN's. Is there anything else that I'm not thinking of that would cause problems here? Should I bundle everything into a single file?

  • How to share problem solving knowledge in a multiteam group?

    I've been working in multiteam groups for as long as I'm a webdeveloper, for me a team can be a lonely soldier or several people, generally a company will have multiple teams working in different projects and once the project is out in the wild, any team can perform the maintenance. This is a small picture since I'm not talking only about project wise knowledge, but "craft wise" knowledge, but it gives the picture of how I'm used to work, so: Since we work on modularised teams, sometimes I feel like the teams are too tightly enclosed in their projects, I've seen cases where after an hour of discussion, someone asked the question aloud and other person totally unrelated answered in a much simpler fashion. The problem is not so simple to solve as people tend not to be available all the time, also sometimes people can't afford the time to go through a problem with the "asker", but could do it alone. I've thought about software based solutions, something in the lines of SE, but I'd like to know other programmers opinions on the subject. EDIT I don't know if this is a wikipedia complex, but I feel that Wikis don't encourage the user to actually ask questions, but rather to write articles, and sometimes we don't know the knowledge we need, before needing it.

  • Disabling shutdown command for all users, even root - consequences?

    I would like to disable the shutdown command for all users, even root, on an Ubuntu Server installation. The reason I want to do this is to ensure that I don't get into the habit of shutting down the machine in this way, as I SSH into a lot of production machines at the same time as this one, and I don't want to accidentally shutdown one of the other machines by typing the command into the wrong window. The server I want do disable shutdown on only runs inside VirtualBox on my Windows desktop, and I only use it for local testing so it is not a problem if I can't shut it down from the command line. I have already mitigated the problem a bit by ensuring I have a different password on the VirtualBox image, but obviously if I am within the sudo 'window' on one of the production machines, I could still accidentally shut it down. My questions are: How do I disable the shutdown command? If I do disable the shutdown command, are there any consequences that I should be made aware of? Most specifically, will it disable support for ACPI shutdown that is the equivalent of pressing the power button on a physical machine? Could it affect other generic applications? For information, I just use this VirtualBox image for trying out shell scripts, running Tomcat and Java, and that kind of thing.

  • OS X Server - setting up a share for network home directories + fast user switching

    I'm nearly finished setting up my Open Directory master to allow users to be managed centrally and logged in on any of the client machines at home. I found discussion suggesting that using an AFP share for the 'Users' automount would result in network users (cf. users defined locally, or Portable Home Directory users) are unable to use fast user switching, as the first user logging in would trigger the automount and mount the 'Users' share with his permissions, preventing further users from using the mount. I've also found some suggestions to configure autofs such that the 'Users' share is mounted prior to any user logging in, but not great amounts of details along these lines. I'd greatly appreciate some instructions to set up autofs - ideally, on the OpenDirectory server rather than each client's etc/fstab or equivalent location, so that it isn't required per every client machine - to get fast user switching working with network users.

  • Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

    For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

    I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss. I found this article that explained a few things and even has a nice code snippet, except that I'm not sure where to plug it. Thanks all

  • How (and when) to move users to mysqli and PDO_MYSQL?

    An important discussion on the PHP "internals" development mailing list is taking place. It's one that you should take some note of. It concerns the next step in transitioning PHP applications away from the very old mysql extension and towards adopting the much better mysqli extension or PDO_MYSQL driver for PDO. This would allow the mysql extension to, at some as-yet undetermined time in the future, be removed. Both mysqli and PDO_MYSQL have been around for many years, and have various advantages: http://php.net/manual/en/mysqlinfo.api.choosing.php The initial RFC for this next step is at https://wiki.php.net/rfc/mysql_deprecation I would expect the RFC to change substantially based on current discussion. The crux of that discussion is the timing of the next step of deprecation. There is also discussion of the carrot approach (showing users the benfits of moving), and stick approach (displaying warnings when the mysql extension is used). As always, there is a lot of guesswork going on as to what MySQL APIs are in current use by PHP applications, how those applications are deployed, and what their upgrade cycle is. This is where you can add your weight to the discussion - and also help by spreading the word to move to mysqli or PDO_MYSQL. For example i would like to export a model of an human body and name each part in specifics vertex groups like: left hand, right hand, right foot, head, ears, ... and you got the idea; so i can have a single 3D model that i can explode in various parts if needed.   • Best way to determine surface normal for a group of pixels?

    One of my current endeavors is creating a 2D destructible terrain engine for iOS Cocos2D (See https://github.com/crebstar/PWNDestructibleTerrain ). It is in an infant stages no doubt, but I have made significant progress since starting a couple weeks ago. However, I have run into a bit of a performance road block with calculating surface normals. Note: For my destructible terrain engine, an alpha of 0 is considered to not be solid ground. The method posted below works just great given small rectangles, such as n < 30. Anything above 30 causes a dip in the frame rate. If you approach 100x100 then you might as well read a book while the sprite attempts to traverse the terrain. I considered doing a cache of all surface normals, but this lead to issues of knowing when to recalculate the surface normals and these calculations also being quite expensive (also how large should the blocks be?). Another smaller issue is I don't know how to properly treat the case when length is = 0. So I am stuck... Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated! Is my method the best possible one? Or should I rethink the algorithm? I am new to game development and always looking to learn new tips and tricks.

    Ok, I'm in the middle of building a saas system, and as part of that, the hosted clients need to be able to edit certain layout templates, baqsically just html, css and javascript files. I'm obviously going to be wanting to use a template syntax here as it would be dumb to let people execute PHP code, so in this instance template syntax does need to be used. I know that in the grand scale of things, this is a very minor thing, but what template syntax do you use, and why? Is there one that's considered better than others? I've seen all sorts being used with no real consistency, for example: Smarty Style: {$someVar} {foreach from="foo" item="bar"} {$bar.food} {/foreach} ASP Style: {% someVar %} {% foreach foo as bar %} {% bar.food %} {% endforeach %} HTML Style: <someVar> <foreach from="foo" item="bar"> <bar:food> </foreach> PyroCMS/FuelPHP "LEX" Style: {{ someVar }} {{ foreach from="foo" item="bar" }} {{ bar:food }} {{ endforeach }} Obviously these arent 100% accurate (for example, LEX is used alongside PHP for loops), and are only to give you an example of what I mean. What, in your opinion would be the best one (if any) to go with. I ask this bearing in mind that people using this are likely to be novice users. I did look around at a bunch of hosted CMS and E-Commerce systems as these seem to make use of user-editable templates, and most seem to be using some form of their own syntax. I should note that whatever style I end up going with, it will be with a custom template handler due to the complexity of the system and how template files are stored. Plus I'd not want to touch the likes of Smarty with a barge pole!
