  • How to best implement Version Control for Web Development?

    Version control systems are obviously important in development projects but there use in web development projects appears to be more complex, what with the requirement of having a web server to run all but the simplest of web applications. With that in mind, I have looked around and discovered a few different methods of using version control in web development projects: Provide each developer with a virtual machine which is a replication of the development server and have the developer run their working copy of the application in the virtual machine. Have each developer use a sub domain on the development server, e.g. john.project.com and checkout their working copy of the app to the directories the sub domain points to. Use the version control system to checkout code, make a change, commit the code and then check it on the development server (which points to the head of the repository). I can see a drawback of 1 being the added time required to create the virtual machines and ensure that the virtual machines are kept insync with the development server (also the need(?) to continuously change the developers host file to point at the virtual machine not the development server). I can see 2 possibly being a problem if absolute URLs are used within the site unless there is an easy way to update the configuration to use the new subdomains as well. 3 is the easiest to set up but is rather primitive and it will presumably become quite tedious for a developer to keep checking in the code after every time change. How have the users of stackoverflow used version control with web development projects and which method/workflow was most effective. Please also include extra methods I haven't thought of / read about.

I have tried writing db.articles.find( {'tags': 'geography'} ), but that doesn't appear to work. I've also thought about changing the search parameter to 'tags.geography', but am having a devil of a time figuring out what the search predicate would be.

  • Applications on the Web/Cloud the way to go? over Desktop apps?

    i am currently a mainly web developer, but is quite attracted to the performance and great integration with the OS (eg. Windows 7, Jump Lists, Taskbar Thumbnails, etc) something like WPF/C# can provide to the user, improving workflow and productivity. privacy and performance seems like a major downside of web/cloud apps compared to desktop apps. applications on the cloud/web work on the go, increased popularity of smartphones/netbooks majority of users may not benefit as much from increased performance of desktop apps, eg. internet surfing, word processing, probably benefit more from decreased startup times, lower costs and data on the cloud desktop applications increased performance benefits power users like 3D rendering, HD video/photo editing, gamers (i wonder if such processing maybe offset to cloud processing) integration with OS increases productivity (maybe such features can be adapted to a web version? maybe with a local desktop app to work with Web App API) more control over privacy (maybe fixed by encryption?) local data access (esp. large files) guaranteed and fast (YouTube HD fast enough most of the time) work not affected by intermittent/slow/availability internet connections (i know this is changing tho) what do you think?

    This is just a simple question. I'm currently using Mozilla's Rhino to develop a little webapp. As one step, I need to get a webpage and filter all of it's nodes. For doing that, I use E4X. I thought I could do this like that: var pnodes = doc..*(p); But that produces an error. How is it done right? (BTW: this is just a step for increasing performance. The code already does well, it's just a bit slow.)

Now We need to search inside that file and provide the result to the user, we need to provide that what is the best solution to implement text searching. I have just tried to identify it and got some reference like IFilter (API or interface) and Lucene.Net (open source), but not sure that is it a right solution. In initial phase it is expected to be around 50,000 resumes and it should be scalable enough if number increases.     Ok, so I'm trying to select an amount of rows from a column that holds the value 3, but only if there are no rows containing 10 or 4, if there are rows containing 10 or 4 I only want to show those. What would be a good syntax to do that? So far I've been attempting a CASE WHEN statement, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (My database is in an MS SQL 2008 server)

  • Filtering Wikipedia's XML dump: error on some accents

    I'm trying to index Wikpedia dumps. My SAX parser make Article objects for the XML with only the fields I care about, then send it to my ArticleSink, which produces Lucene Documents. I want to filter special/meta pages like those prefixed with Category: or Wikipedia:, so I made an array of those prefixes and test the title of each page against this array in my ArticleSink, using article.getTitle.startsWith(prefix). In English, everything works fine, I get a Lucene index with all the pages except for the matching prefixes. In French, the prefixes with no accent also work (i.e. filter the corresponding pages), some of the accented prefixes don't work at all (like Catégorie:), and some work most of the time but fail on some pages (like Wikipédia:) but I cannot see any difference between the corresponding lines (in less). I can't really inspect all the differences in the file because of its size (5 GB), but it looks like a correct UTF-8 XML. If I take a portion of the file using grep or head, the accents are correct (even on the incriminated pages, the <title>Catégorie:something</title> is correctly displayed by grep). On the other hand, when I rectreate a wiki XML by tail/head-cutting the original file, the same page (here Catégorie:Rock par ville) gets filtered in the small file, not in the original… Any idea ?     Hi All I have a custom module I made to show featured products on the homepage. I set it up to show products that are in a ‘featured’ category. It works fine in 1.3, but now in 1.4 I get the following error: SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column ‘e.category_ids’ in ‘where clause’ Here’s my code: $_productCollection = Mage::getResourceModel('reports/product_collection') ->addAttributeToSelect('*') ->addAttributeToFilter('visibility', $visibility) ->addAttributeToFilter('category_ids',array('finset'=>$featuredcategory)) $_productCollection->load(); The featured category is specified from the admin. Anyone any ideas what might be up?

  • How can I use System.Web.Caching.Cache in a Console application?

    Context: .Net 3.5, C# I'd like to have caching mechanism in my Console application. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, I'd like to use System.Web.Caching.Cache (and that's a final decision, I can't use other caching framework, don't ask why). However, it looks like System.Web.Caching.Cache is supposed to run only in a valid HTTP context. My very simple snippet looks like this: using System; using System.Web.Caching; using System.Web; Cache c = new Cache(); try { c.Insert("a", 123); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine("cannot insert to cache, exception:"); Console.WriteLine(ex); } and the result is: cannot insert to cache, exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at System.Web.Caching.Cache.Insert(String key, Object value) at MyClass.RunSnippet() So obviously, I'm doing something wrong here. Any ideas? Update: +1 to most answers, getting the cache via static methods is the correct usage, namely HttpRuntime.Cache and HttpContext.Current.Cache. Thank you all!

  • What should a developer know before building a public web site?

    What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification. This question is community wiki, so please feel free to edit that answer to add links to good articles that will help explain or teach each particular point.

    I have a directory full of log files in the form ${name}.log.${year}{month}${day} such that they look like this: logs/ production.log.20100314 production.log.20100321 production.log.20100328 production.log.20100403 production.log.20100410 ... production.log.20100314 production.log.old I'd like to use a bash script to filter out all the logs older than x amount of month's and dump it into *.log.old X=6 #months LIST=*.log.*; for file in LIST; do is_older = file_is_older_than_months( ${file}, ${X} ); if is_older; then cat ${c} >> production.log.old; rm ${c}; fi done; How can I get all the files older than x months? and... How can I avoid that *.log.old file is included in the LIST attribute? Thank you Stefan

    iam using swf file upload control in my application developed in asp.net & c#.net. i am having a dropdown box with file types like jpeg,.xls ,.txt etc. so when i select particular file type in the dropdown and clicking on the button would open a filedialog showing only the files of the type selected in the dropdown. The problem is that when i select "jpeg" for the first time file dialog shows only jpeg files. when i select ".xls" next time it shows again the prevoiusly selected jpeg files and not currently selected ".xls". but while debugging it was found the file type definition in the swf code has been changed to .xls . can any one guide why the file upload control not mapping the selected file for the second time

  • Coordinating the logging output from a web app installed in a SharePoint farm.

    We are deploying web parts to SharePoint 2007 and would like to include logging (log4net). The ideal solution would be to use a database appender to avoid the problems with knowing which actual server is executing the web part. This questions has been helpful: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/219668/sharepoint-and-log4net. I've got log4net working in a stand-alone web app using Visual Studio dev server using the web.config for the log4net settings and a file appender for the output. I'd like to transition to SharePoint and still use the log file output so I can make sure it's all working first, then change the config around to log to a database. Is this going to be too much trouble? How have other developers added log4.net into their solutions for SharePoint?

  • DSP - Filtering frequencies using DFT

    I'm trying to implement a DFT-based 8-band equalizer for the sole purpose of learning. To prove that my DFT implementation works I fed an audio signal, analyzed it and then resynthesized it again with no modifications made to the frequency spectrum. So far so good. I'm using the so-called 'standard way of calculating the DFT' which is by correlation. This method calculates the real and imaginary parts both N/2 + 1 samples in length. To attenuate a frequency I'm just doing: float atnFactor = 0.6; Re[k] *= atnFactor; Im[k] *= atnFactor; where 'k' is an index in the range 0 to N/2, but what I get after resynthesis is a slighty distorted signal, especially at low frequencies. The input signal sample rate is 44.1 khz and since I just want a 8-band equalizer I'm feeding the DFT 16 samples at a time so I have 8 frequency bins to play with. Can someone show me what I'm doing wrong? I tried to find info on this subject on the internet but couldn't find any. Thanks in advance.

    I'm using Disqus comments on my site. Users can comment on blog posts or on podcasts. So I have a page that lists all the blog-posts and one listing all of my podcasts. I'm using the combo-widget to display the most recent comments on each of these two pages. But I only want recent blog-post comments to show up in the list on the blog index page and likewise for podcasts. At the moment, the combo-widget lists all the comments, regardless of whether or not they were left on a blog post or a podcast... Is Disqus even built to be used in this way? [Site built with rails and I'm using norman's disqus plugin, although I doubt it matters...]
