  I was cleaning up my laptop hard-disk, running Windows 7, and as part of the process I ran the Disk Cleanup utility. To my surprise I saw 2 items in the list that were quite large (both ~300MB). Per user queued Windows Error Reporting System queued Windows Error Reporting I guess I had never noticed these, because they were never that big. So, what are these items? Any particular reason why they became so large all of a sudden? And finally, is it safe to remove them?

• Windows 7 Locking Executable Files

  Since I've been using Windows 7 RTM (as opposed to the Beta and RCs), I've been having a peculiar issue with executable files. I first noticed it whilst using Visual Studio, in that when building a project, it would often fail saying that the output file was locked - but the problem has stemmed further. When I've executed an application, closed it (cleanly), and attempted to delete/move/rename/overwrite said file, Windows 7 tells me that the file is locked/access is denied. I've made use of software like LockHunter/Unlocker but it is seemingly unable to remove these locks (most of the time, it shows no locks at all). After about 5-10 minutes, the respective files are unlocked again, but needless to say this is a bit of a workflow-breaker (as it's not simply constrained to VS). I've done the usual tasks of virus/malware scanning, and turned up with absolutely nothing. I've got no peculiar services running, and the problem was not present before I installed a Windows 7 RTM version. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Family server setup

  Hi all, I really hope some of you can give me some direction. I have setup a linux server at home and through samba I can access files from different computers in my home. I would like to use this server as a file-server for my family (brothers, sisters and parents who all live in their own homes). I really like the way it is set up right now with user and permission controls, but I've read that it is bad idea to open up the samba port to the world. The requirements are simple: 1) it should be easy to access, by using standard web browsers or mounting the drive (shouldn't have to use any VPN setup or use putty etc) 2) should be somewhat secure. We just want to share family pictures instead of putting them on facebook or picasa or other web server, nothing top secret. Here is what I've looked into: 1)Webdav. It seems decent but seems like it windows7 doesn't like it very much, even with digest mode authentication. User controls and permissions are not as flexible as samba (or at least to my knowledge). I really like the user and group permissions in samba, but if I could live with webdav if it worked seamlessly with windows, it should just work shouldn't it? 2) I read somewhere to stay away from ftp as it is outdated and that there are newer and better internet file-server setups? Was that a reference to webdav? I am so confused, please help... Manny

• Can Windows XP remember file icon position?

  Windows allows you to arrange icons however you like in a window. However after some time when I go back to the window, it has forgotten the icon positions and has completely rearranged the icons. Is there a way to preserve the icon positions? In the previous version of Windows I used, this would happen on rare occasions (about 6 months) and it might only move a couple of icons. Now it is happening practically every day and it is every single icon. Attempts to rearrange them manually are futile and it is increasingly maddening. Searching Google, I have found a number of programs that allow you to save and restore icon position on the desktop. But, this is just a regular folder window so I am not sure if any of those would even work. Some details: Windows XP SP 3 running in Parallels 5 virtual machine Auto Arrange and Align to Grid are NOT turned on Fresh OS install and only setting icon positions in one window

• After recovery to restore point, Windows 7 missing pinned items and favorites

  I believe a recent windows update was interrupted. The next day, I could not logon and was presented with the error "User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded". I followed some advice from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-security/help-user-profile-service-service-failed-the-logon/4ed66b21-c23e-42f1-98b2-706dcf931fae and logged in with a different admin account and used system restore to restore to a recent restore point. Most everything is working fine, but I have noticed two odd things: Any items that were pinned to my start menu or task bar were not accessible. I had to un-pin and re-pin the items. In Windows Explorer, my favorites are gone and I can't seem to add any favorites. If I browse to a folder and right click on the Favorites Icon and select "add current location to favorites" nothing is saved. I'd appreciate any explanation to understand why these things did not get recovered properly and any help fixing the favorite functionality.

• Windows 8 to 8.1 Pro Upgrade SecureBoot Error

  I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I have an Alienware Aurora R4 with the latest BIOS firmware version, A09. Ever since I did the upgrade, I get a watermark on my desktop saying, "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly"...I would like to get rid of this watermark the correct way (not by hacking system DLLs). My BIOS shows me booting in UEFI mode, and I see that SecureBoot is actually disabled from there. I cannot enable SecureBoot, in either UEFI mode or Legacy Boot mode. Note, I can't even get Legacy Boot mode working without re-formatting my system which I really don't plan on doing, so my question is this...what has changed in the way Windows handles SecureBoot? As far as I can tell, I do not have SecureBoot enabled, and it is trying to tell me that it isn't configured correctly. Why does it even care to check if my BIOS doesn't have it on anyways?! Its so frustrating!

• Connecting to Windows 7 from fedora is slow

  I use rdesktop command to connect to windows 7 machine remotely but I get a very slow reponse when I try and connent to it. The command that I used to connect to it is rdesktop -4 -C -x -b : -g 100% 192.168.1.100. I have tried using the rdesktop command to connect to the console port as well but the result is the same. I have even tried using the Terminal server client application the result is the same. I am trying to connect from fedora 14 machine to windows 7 professional is there any tweaking that needs to be done to overcome this issue either on fedora or Windows 7.

• How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

  I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

  I just restarted my laptop to finish installing a Windows update and now it is stuck on please wait. I have tried a system restore but there is only one restore point in the list and it does not work for some reason... I also tried to do a refresh but it asks me for media. I plug in the usb I used to install windows 8 a while and go and says that the media failed to load. I'm kind of stuck on options now. I can't boot and I can't restore and it seems I cant format either! Is there anything anything else I can do to get things going?! I'm running Windows 8 on a dell xps 14 ultrabook. Win 8 is installed on an msata drive and booting using EFi.

  I've installed windows 8 and during setup it wanted my email. I provided an alternative email (let's call it email_1) for the installation to complete. Then I've installed windows live (msn only), for which I use another email (email_2). Now, every time I start windows and open msn, I'm signed in with email_1. I selected "forget me" for email_1 address in the msn login window, but I'm somehow always signed in with email_1. Is there any way to completely remove email_1 from the msn?

• What is the best file system to use for a second hard drive when dual booting between WinXP and Win7

  I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

• Windows 8 FN key doesn't work for brightness

  I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 and fn+f5/fn+f6 keys (for brightness) doesn't work. In fact, they work, but they can increase/decrease the brightness only 1 time. I mean - after pressing fn+f5 once, nothing happens if I try to press fn+f5 again, before I press fn+f6. This only happens after logging in. At the login screen and during Windows boot I can adjust the brightness as I want, but after login I can't. I installed the latest ATK driver and NVIDIA graphics driver for Windows 8, and I think that my problem is related to conflict with drivers. I tried to reinstall/delete some drivers, but it didn't help. How can I detect where is the problem? Thanks.

  I have a very old application designed for Windows 3.1. I have been able to use this application on Windows 7, however, that was Windows 7 32bit. Now I have since re-installed Windows to 64bit, and this application does not work, saying it's incompatible. I have tried running the application (and its other side-applications) in Windows '95 mode, but still the same message. How can I run this old app on 64bit Windows? • Windows Vista to Windows7 upgrade

  I have a Windows Vista Home Premium and I tried installing SP2 on it and It prompted me to install SP1. Then it stopped working when I installed SP1. I don't have back up that I can use to restore it. When I use the Windows Repair mode I am unable to get access to few options none of which is working. I do have access to the command prompt. Is there way to restore this? If I am planning to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium what are the steps?

  I have a problem with my search in Windows 8. When I search through the Modern UI style (WinF) for files, it won't return a single result from none of my drives. Searching via Windows Explorer works fine. I had the same problem in Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but it worked in Developer Preview. And I looked on the net for other users with similar problems, but I haven't found anything. Is there someone who knows what the problem might be?

• Sign out of messenger on Windows 8

  I just installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Just going through the default procedure, I let it use my Xbox Live account to create a user. When I then went and turned on my Xbox, it now notified me that I was logged into Messenger in two locations. I went back to Windows 8, and turned my Live account into a local account on that machine. But when I then turned the Xbox again, I got the same message. Is there a way to just 'sign out of messenger' on Windows 8? Or is there a location to even see where I am signed in at?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes.   I was recently given an HP Proliant Server from a friend as a gift. It has Windows Server 2003 installed on it. When I go to boot the system however to log in to Windows Server 2003 it requires an Admin password. I can't figure out the password and my friend doesn't know it either as it has been years since hes used the machine. I don't care about any of the data on the machine I just want to have a new clean version of Windows server 2003 running on it. Any advice would be helpful?   I need a unixy environment for development purposes. I hate doing things on windows but it is more stable for daily use and I don't have a mac, so I'm having to use windows (7). I want to run freebsd in a virtual machine, configure it to be the localhost server, be able to connect using ssh (within my home-network) and be able to install vbox guest addons. If guest additions aren't the best, I can use solaris or linux flavours. I need no gui. I don't know anything about network stuff, so I need a detailed explanation from vise people here, or a nice doc to read. Edit : To be more specific as requested, I use following on unices: *django 1.4 *apache *python (2.7) *emacs *mysql *probably node.js *bash scripting I use windows to be able to do daily things easily, like connecting to my tablet, browsing and learning java. And I don't want to use linux as my desktop os, beacuse it gets broken a lot, it's annoying to maintain wlan problems and some more.

• How to schedule download of windows 7 updates?

  To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button. • How to force "Windows Explorer" to open new folders in the same window

  I have been searching for an answer to this question for a very long time. I have checked the "open folders in the same window" radio button in the general tab of folder options. I have also been told to uncheck the launch as seperate processes button in the view tab of folder options. I'm thinking some how this must be a registry issue. Anyone know a registry hack that will fix this problem and force windows explorer to open folders in the same window. I'm sick to death of having so many windows open.   I recently had a massive crash on my Windows 8.1 partition, which has rendered it (practically) unusable. I tried to do a refresh, but the problem is, I have a Windows 8 install disk, not 8.1, and thus it didn't work. I also do not have any system restore points/backups of any sort, but I have managed to move my files off. Also, I do not know where my product key is (and cannot find it online), so a clean reinstall would not work. My question is, is there any way to change my Windows 8 disc into an 8.1 disc to allow me to refresh/reset my PC, or is there any other way to do this (aside from repurchasing?) Thanks!

• windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) won't boot up, I've tried system repair startup

  I've been trying to get my computer to boot up in the last 2 hours. I've tried using the system repair at start up, but all that does is it sends me to a screen with the stock Windows background that is enlarged with a cursor on the screen. It's not frozen and I can move the cursor around, but there is nothing to click on. I've tried to get into Task Manager and such, but the shortcut doesn't work. I have no back ups of the OS as it came pre-installed on the computer. Is there anyway for me to get my computer to work (I don't mind starting fresh)? I do have access to another computer but it's my brothers and it has Windows XP (I'd like to keep my Windows 7).

• Windows 7 hangs at Welcome screen with "EXPLORERFRAME.dll" error

  I have a problem with my Windows 7 which fails to startup, and it happens frequently. I already tried to fix it, but nothing happened. I checked my hardisk and there is no badsector detected. Its stop in the Welcome screen and I get the following message: C:\Windows\System32\EXPLORERFRAME.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error. The Welcome screen then disappears and I get a totally empty screen with a cursor. What happened and how can I fix it?
