    I am using VB2005 and SQL SERVER 2000. I want to insert date and time.

    I've been pulling my hair out over some unexpected behavior from nullable integers. If I set an Integer to Nothing, it becomes Nothing as expected. If I set an Integer? to a String that is Nothing, it becomes 0! Of course I get this whether I explicitly cast the String to Integer? or not. I realize I could work around this pretty easily but I want to know what I'm missing. Dim NullString As String = Nothing Dim NullableInt As Integer? = CType(NullString, Integer?) 'Expected NullableInt to be Nothing, but it's 0! NullableInt = Nothing 'This works -- NullableInt now contains Nothing. How is this EDIT: Previously I had my code up here so without the explicit conversion to 'Integer?' and everyone seemed to be fixated on that. I want to be clear that this is not an issue that would have been caught by Option Strict On -- check out the accepted answer. This is a quirk of the string-to-integer conversion rules which predate nullable types, but still impact them.

  • Directory.GetFiles returning entire path, I only want the filename?

    This is the code I have set up to scan a directory of files: Dim fileArray() As String fileArray = Directory.GetFiles(System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory & "help\") And it successfully gets all files in the directory, but it gets their absolute paths aswell. For example, one of the entries in fileArray() is: F:\Project\Project\bin\x86\Debug\help\book_troubleshoot.html And I want it to just be: book_troubleshoot.html Is there a way to do this without parsing through all the array entries to trim off the path?     I have a list of controls that I change based on an event. The controls are contained within a table that is created dynamically. I traverse through a set of controls and if it is a RadioButtonList or a DropDownList I do the following: CType(cntrl, ListControl).SelectedValue = val The radio buttons set just fine but the dropdown list doesn't reset. Can anyone tell me why. The initial table is created on the first Page Load and stored in memory. It's values are changed during the eventhandling and reposted to a MasterPage's content holder.

    I'm doing some error debugging trying to get the errors on our website down to a minimum and there seems to be an error that is popping up quite a lot Conversion from string "" to type 'Double' is not valid. I'm unable to replicate this problem but I can see that it is happening. I've been looking through the code in one of the pages and strolled across this Dim varWeek As String If varWeek < 10 Then 'Do something' End If Could this be causing the problem as it is trying to see if a String is less than 10 which is an Integer? As I said before as I am unable to see this error in the first place so changing this to an Integer doesn't change anything on my system. Thanks.

  • Export GridView to Excel (not working)

    I've spent the last two days trying to get some bloody data to export to Excel. After much research I determined that the best and most common way is using HttpResponse headers as shown in my code below. After stepping through countless times in debug mode, I have confirmed that the data is in fact there and both filtered and sorted the way I want it. However, it does not download as an Excel file, or do anything at all for that matter. I suspect this may have something to do with my UpdatePanel or perhaps the ImageButton not posting back properly, but I'm not sure. What am I doing wrong? Please help me to debug this issue.     In my project I have it set up so that all the tables in the DB has the property "id" and then I have the entity objects inherit from the EntityBase class using a repository pattern. I then set the inheritance modifier for "id" property in the dbml file o/r designer to "overrides" Public MustInherit Class EntityBase MustOverride Property id() As Integer End Class Public MustInherit Class RepositoryBase(Of T As EntityBase) Protected _Db As New DataClasses1DataContext Public Function GetById(ByVal Id As Integer) As T Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault End Function End Class Partial Public Class Entity1 Inherits EntityBase End Class Public Class TestRepository Inherits RepositoryBase(Of Entity1) End Class the line Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault however produces the error "Class member EntityBase.id is unmapped" when i use VS 2010 using the 4.0 framework but I never received that error with the old one.   • Deploying a .Net App Source Control (SVN) over 32-bit AND 64-bit dev stations

    Here is the situation : Our Dev Team has heterogeneous OS systems, scattered between 32-bit and 64-bit. This is not ideal, we are actually planning to homogenize our infrastructure, but in the meantime we have to deal with it. The issue is that when a 32-bit developer checks out a 64-bit solution on SVN, he has to manually change the target platforms all over again to get it compiled (not to mention other side problems) My question is : What clean (though temporary) solution could be addressed in such situation, permitting each developer to keep his default project/platform settings while checking out and in from SVN. I guess that -at least for the first time a project/solution is checked out, a dev still has to tweak the setting manually to compile it properly. After that, according to relevant SVN filters, it is possible to ignore some settings files (which ones, by the way?) I am open to all clever and detailed suggestions. Thanks.

    Hi! I have a web app that has a base page. Each page needs to inherit from this base page as it contains properties they all need as well as dealing with the login rights. My base page has some properties, eg: IsRole1, IsRole2, currentUserID, Role1Allowed, Role2Allowed. On the init of each page I set the properties "Role1Allowed" and "Role2Allowed" Private Sub Page_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init Role1Allowed = True Role2Allowed= False End Sub The basepage then decides if the user needs redirecting. 'Sample code so not exactly what is going to be, bug gives the idea Protected Overridable Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) If Role1Allowed And Not Role1 Then 'Redirect somewhere End If End Sub The page then must override this pageload if they need anything else in it, but making sure they call the base pageload first. Protected Overrides Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load MyBase.Page_Load(sender, e) If Not IsPostBack Then BindGrid() End If End Sub The other properties (IsRole1, IsRole, currentUserID) are also accessible by the page so it can be decided if certain things need doing based on the user. As there are multiple people working on this project and creating pages some are forgetting to inherit from this basepage, or call the base pageload when overriding it.     I've created a custom clipboard because it's not possible to make my whole class map serializable - which is a requirement for the windows clipboard. However, I need to distinguish between users who are using my clipboard through a unique id. Basically, I want to be able identify a person who is sat at one PC with one or more copies of visual studio (or similar) open. How do I do that? ps: This is at design-time. pps: It's not critical that it should work between copies of visual studio. One copy would be fine, or even one design surface.

  • Accented character replacement for search then reinserted afterwards

    Basically my issue is that users would like to search for a french word that has accented characters but without typing in the accented characters and then have the actual accented word appeared highlighted if found... So for example they would type in "declare" but in the result sets it would look like "déclare" and if found "déclare" would be highlighted. My first thought was to just simply replace the characters with a regex but then I remembered that I would need to re-insert the replaced characters after the search... I was thinking of then using some sort of character map that would track position and the character so that when the search was finshed I could put the result set back to the way it was. This seems a little brute force to me and I was wondering if anyone had a better alternative? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 with this app. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks
