  I am a little bit puzzled about something. I am creating a ASP.NET MVC eCommerce application and currently I have written all the back end in ASP.NET MVC. I was thinking if its better to write all the management in WPF instead of HTML, as its probably even less prone to be exploited by hackers. I am a Windows user so I am not really bothered about using Linux/Mac at the moment so I am quite aware that having all the back-end written in HTML will allow users to have access to the admin area using other OS. I would like to see what are the advantages and disadvantages of having WPF to manage the content of the website as its probably much easier to develop and manage (think about Live Writer).

• What's the best way to debug AJAX to PHP calls?

  I'm having a miserable time debugging one small function on my new project. Essentially I'm having a user log out via an AJAX call to my log out script on my server called "userfFunctions.php" I'm using AJAX so that I don't have the headache of writing more regex to match my mod_rewrites. Anyway, every so often, it seems as though my Post data just flat out dies and since the PHP is running behind the scenes, I feel like I have no way of finding out where the data flow is being disrupted. BTW This function works 19 hrs of the day. • How do I use a custom select statement in Hibernate using the HibernateDaoSupport class

  I am trying to write a custom select statement in Hibernate using the getHibernateTemplate() method. I am having problems with the resulting mapping. Example Code: List<User> users = getHibernateTemplate().find("Select user, sysdate as latestPost from User as user"); for (User user : users) { assertNotNull(users.name); } The goal of the above line is to eventually have a join where I get the max(date) of posts made by the user. The problem I am having is that the resulting users list is not a list of User objects and I get a class cast exception. Hopefully that is enough code. It is a greatly simplified version of my problem and a combination of snippets from various parts of my application.

• count(*) vs count(column-name) - which is more correct?

  Does it make a difference if you do count(*) vs count(column-name) as in these two examples? I have a tendency to always write count(*) because it seems to fit better in my mind with the notion of it being an aggregate function, if that makes sense. But I'm not sure if it's technically best as I tend to see example code written without the * more often than not. count(*): select customerid, count(*), sum(price) from items_ordered group by customerid having count(*) > 1; vs. count(column-name): SELECT customerid, count(customerid), sum(price) FROM items_ordered GROUP BY customerid HAVING count(customerid) > 1;

• How do I make a TCP server work behind a router (NAT) without any redirection configuration needed.

  The scenario is the following. I have two machines A and B: A: Client (behind NAT) B: Server (behind NAT) I want B to be able to listen on any given port, so that A can send packets to B through that specific TCP port and receive any response. If both machines are not behind a NAT it is pretty straight foward process. However how do I make it work so that it works even when B is behind a router, without him having to go change the router configuration enable some port forwarding etc... For example, how do p2p program like torrent clients work without the user having anything to configure? Thanks and I hope my question is clear enough.

I'd like to select all columns from table A (having columns: id, name, description) and substitute the "A.name" column with the value of the column "B.title" from table B (having columns: id, table_A_id title, langcode) where B.table_A_id is 5 and B.langcode is "nl" (if there are any rows). • Average of a Sum in Mysql query

  I am having some problems creating a query that gives me the average of a sum. I read a few examples here in stackoverflow and couldn't do it. Can anyone help me to understand how to do this please? This is the data I have: Basically I need the average transaction value by cashier. I can't run a basic avg because it will take all rows but each transaction can have multiple rows. At the end I want to have: Cashier| Average| 131 | 44.31 |(Which comes from the sum divided by 3 transactions not 5 rows) 130 | 33.15 | etc. This is the query I have to SUM the transactions but don't know how or where to include the AVG function.   I thought I had this figured out but it turns out I'm just deleting the first record. The following returns the duplicate rows. All have a count of 2. I just want to delete the first one for each duplicate record. select scorestudentid, scoreadvisor, scorecorrect, count(*) from scores where scoretestid = 3284 group by scorestudentid, scoreadvisor, scorecorrect having count(scorestudentid) > 1 Which returns: scorestudentid scoreadvisor scorecorrect no column name 13033719 28059 3.0 2 13033777 28086 3.0 2 13033826 28147 3.0 2 13033960 28023 3.0 2 So I put this together thinking it would work: set rowcount 1 delete from scores where scoretestid = 3284 and scorestudentid in ( select scorestudentid from scores where scoretestid = 3284 group by scorestudentid having count(scorestudentid) > 1) It really seems like it should be a simple concept but I'm not getting it.

• How should flushing be handled in a doctrine EntityManager instance shared across different services in symfony2?

  I have defined several services in symfony 2 which persist changes to the database. These services have the doctrine instance as one of their dependencies: a.given.service: class: Acme\TestBundle\Service\AGivenService arguments: [@doctrine] If I have two different services and both of them persist objects through the EntityManager, which is obtained like this from the doctrine instance: $em = $doctrine->getEntityManager(); Would all services always share the same EntityManager? If so, how should I handle flushing if I wanted to handle all the changes in a single transaction? I have checked this: http://docs.doctrine-project.org/projects/doctrine-orm/en/2.0.x/reference/transactions-and-concurrency.html and it explains how to handle different transactions in a request, but I want to achieve the opposite, which is having different changes in different services handled as a single transaction. Is there a better approach to handle multiple changes in different services? For now my best bet is having a front-end service in charge of calling the other services and doing the flushing afterwards. Backend services would persist objects but would not do any flushing.

• Port a Rails App from Windows to Mac or Linux

  Hello I've been a Rails developer on Windows for quite some time now, but I recently completed my biggest project yet (it's quite extensive, took me over a year to build) but I am having trouble deploying it. The combination of it's size, complexity and a windows environment is making it needlessly complex to deploy. I am thinking about getting an old mac mini and using it just for rails development. Either that or install unix on another box. Is there any way I can port my app to this mac or linux machine, without having to start over? I can't find any resources on the internets about this.

• How to avoid Mercurial repo corruption when sharing a repository between Windows/Mac?

  I have several projects which are shared between Windows and Mac. The dev machine is a Mac running Parallels: the files are stored on the Mac side, and the source is shared to the Windows side. This is very convenient, as I can switch back and forth between Windows and Mac tools rapidly without having to sync files. Recently I switched from Subversion to Mercurial, and now I'm having problems with the Mercurial repository becoming corrupt if I use the Windows tools to add/update, etc. I have to be very careful about which operations on the Windows side are safe (mainly the read-only stuff) and of course I forget rather regularly. Does anybody know why the corruption occurs? I thought Mercurial repositories were platform-agnostic. Any ideas how to prevent it without removing the Windows tools entirely?

• Communication between Multiple Threads in a WPF Application

  I'm creating a WPF application that uses a custom object to populate all the controls. The constructor of that object is initiated by an EventHandler that waits for an API. The problem I'm having is when I try to access any information from that object using a button for example, it returns an error saying "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it". I'm assuming this is because the EventHandler creates a new thread which doesn't allow the Main Thread to have access to it. Any ideas on how to get around this? I'm basically having the error "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it" when trying to get or set a CollectionViewSource.

Someone is arguing about the use of code from a complete program just because "Java is Open Source". • boost variant static_visitor problem picking correct function

  I'm sure I'm having a problem with template resolution here, but I'm not sure why I'm having the problem. I have a static visitor I'm passing to boost variant where i've had to do template specialization for certain cases. The case for everything except for MyClass should throw in the static_visitor below. Unfortunately, when the visitor is applied to pull a MyClass out, it selects the most generic case rather than the exact match. I would type each case explicitly, but that will be rather long. • Why repeat database constraints in models?

  In a CakePHP application, for unique constraints that are accounted for in the database, what is the benefit of having the same validation checks in the model? I understand the benefit of having JS validation, but I believe this model validation makes an extra trip to the DB. I am 100% sure that certain validations are made in the DB so the model validation would simply be redundant. The only benefit I see is the app recognizing the mistake and adjusting the view for the user accordingly (repopulating the fields and showing error message on the appropriate field; bettering the ux) but this could be achieved if there was a constraint naming convention and so the app could understand what the problem was with the save (existing method to do this now?)

  How could I possibly implement a unit converter in Java??? I was thinking of having a abstract base class: public abstract class Unit { ... public void ConvertTo(Unit unit); } Then having each class like Meter Kilometer Inch Centimeter Millimeter ... derive from that base Unit class. All the units of length would be in a package called com.unitconverter.distance, then a package, com.unitconverter.energy, for energy etc. etc. So is this the best way to implement a unit converter? Or is there a better or more easier way?

• Game Objects Talking To Each Other

  What is a good way of dealing with objects and having them talk to each other? Up until now all my games hobby/student have been small so this problem was generally solved in a rather ugly way, which lead to tight integration and circular dependencies. Which was fine for the size of projects I was doing. However my projects have been getting bigger in size and complexity and now I want to start re-using code, and making my head a simpler place. The main problem I have is generally along the lines of Player needs to know about the Map and so does the Enemy, this has usually descended into setting lots of pointers and having lots of dependencies, and this becomes a mess quickly. I have thought along the lines of a message style system. but I cant really see how this reduces the dependencies, as I would still be sending the pointers everywhere. Thanks. PS: I guess this has been discussed before, but I don't know what its called just the need I have.

• IE 7 CSS problem with detecting mouse over on div

  I have a div inside an li as part of a top navigation for a website. I'm having trouble with IE 7 having "holes" in the box such that the drop down disappears when the user is still on the drop down. I started with a pure CSS solution (li:hover) and that works awesome in all browsers except IE 7. So I've now added a jQuery/javascript solution to detect when the mouse enters and exits the nav li and then add a class to show the drop down. It works better, but if the mouse is not over an image, p, h3, or a tag then it doesn't think I'm over the div that is the drop down. Very frustrating.   Hi public class TestClass { public static void main(String[] args) { TestClass t = new TestClass(); } private static void testMethod(){ class TestMethodClass{ int a; int b; int c; } TestMethodClass testMethodClass = new TestMethodClass(); } } I found out that the above piece of code is perfectly legal in Java. I have the following questions. What is the use of ever having a class definition inside a method? Will a class file be generated for TestMethodClass Its hard for me to imagine this concept in an Object Oriented manner. Having a class definition inside a behavior. Probably can someone tell me with equivalent real world examples. Thanks
