• "blue screen" occurs when using VPN

  I am using the VPN client "Tunnelblick" for getting access to the restricted sites of my university. This is working quite fine, until sometime out of a sudden a "blue screen" occurs which is telling me to restart the computer. I am using Mac OS X Lion on a 4,1 MacBook Air. The error report tells me, that the system crashed somewhere during processing the ipconfig thread. Is someone known to this or similar problems with Mac OS X Lion and VPN and has kind of a solution?

• Cannot login to XP SP3 in VMWarePlayer virtual machine in safe mode

  Hello, Here is my setup Host OS: XP SP3 Guest OS: XP SP3 (using VMWare) I checked the /SAFEBOOT option in System Config utility in guest for troubleshooting. Now the guest OS boots up in Safe Mode but I cannot login with my user id/password. Here is what I tried: [domainName]\[userid] for user name = Login Fails Administrator with blank password = Login fails Safe Mode with Networking = Login fails Safe Mode with Command Prompt = Login fails Last Known Good Configuration = starts in safe mode, login fails Start Windows Normally = starts in safe mode, login fails Don't have cd to get to the recovery console Any ideas?

• Postfix sends email to spam (gmail, hotmail)

  I recently installed a postfix + dovecot + dkim multi domain, multi user, multi alias mail server on my debian squeeze system. Everything works except for one big issue that basically makes the whole thing useless: Every single email sent by my server goes straight into spam. (gmail, hotmail) First thing i did is doing the well known allaboutspam test and all is checked (green) except for the BATV thing (yellow): Reverse dns: green HELO Greeting: green RBL: green BATV: yellow SPF: green DKIM: green URIBL: green SPAMAssassin: green Greylist: green I'm really confused and i can't see a way to solve this issue. • What is magento ecommerce plotting ???

  I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to to discuss this issue but I am a Magento developer and ever since they announced they were going to build magento as a PAAS platform, I began to not trust where they are trying to go with the company. As a business I respect where they are trying to go as a company, but as a developer who highly depends on their platform for my business, I feel that they will eventually become a player in their own game. Ebay has announced that they will be acquiring the license to the magento platform and this makes you wonder why a company like eBay would want to do such a thing. Ebay is known for their pre-built stores. it would seem they would only team with magento only to utilize their PAAS web stores. I dunno, maybe I am a little confused about the whole situation. that's why i would like to hear everyone else opinion.

• Nginx. How do I reject request to unlisted ssl virtual server?

  I have a wildcard SSL certificate and several subdomains on the same ip. Now I want my nginx to handle only mentioned server names and drop connection for others so that it'd look like nginx is not running for unlisted server names (not responding, rejecting, dead, not a single byte in response). I do the following ssl_certificate tls/domain.crt; ssl_certificate_key tls/domain.key; server { listen 1.2.3.4:443 ssl; server_name validname.domain.com; // } server { listen 1.2.3.4:443 ssl; server_name _; // deny all; // return 444; // return 404; //location { // deny all; //} } I've tried almost everything in the last server block, but no success. • SNMP keeps crashing

  We're using OpsView/Nagios to monitor our servers. We've added the SNMP service to all our servers and deployed the configuration via GPO, but one win2k3 server seems to have a problem; it crashes pretty regularly. The event log carries messages like: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: 6/11/2009 Time: 7:11:49 PM User: N/A Computer: HOSTNNAME Description: The SNMP Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). and also Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 6/11/2009 Time: 7:11:18 PM User: N/A Computer: HOSTNAME Description: Faulting application snmp.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x000417af. Now, I could probably set it to simply restart on crash in perpetuity, but I think it's better to fix problems like this. Is this a known problem? If not, what should I do to diagnose it?

• How to OCR PDF files with Old German Gothic (Fraktur) text?

  I have been successfully using Adobe Acrobat X to OCR many scanned documents which I use for my research. However I have begun studying old German documents which use the Fraktur script, also known as Gothic. SuperUser won't let me post an image of it, but you can find examples of what it looks like in the Wikipedia article (linked above). I have read about special programs which OCR the text, such as ABBY FineReader für Fraktur, but first it works on Windows (and I use a Mac), and second I'd like to find a Fraktur plugin for Acrobat to fit into my already-existing workflow. Are there any Fraktur OCR plugins for Acrobat? Generally, where should one look for Acrobat OCR plugins?

• Do 10m external SAS cables work?

  According to the Wikipedia page external SAS cables are specified for up to 10m length. However, I found it pretty hard to actually find places that sell cables of that length. This made me wonder: Are there any known problems with using cables that are as long as this? Will it be more fragile? Slower? And if 10m is not suggested, would 6m be any more stable? A little background: for several reasons we'd like to put a tape library physically separate from our main server and 10m would be enough to put it on a separate floor.

• Eliminating "phantom" or "ghost" clicks on my Mac Pro

  Recently on my Mac Pro I have been experiencing phantom clicks and other strange behaviors. I have been rummaging through my system preferences to try and root out possible causes, and recently came across a strange finding in the Exposé panel (the keyboard modifiers are there from my taking the screenshot): I have had a Logitech 2-button mouse with a mouse wheel for years, and have never had a problem with it in the past. In addition I am running OS X 10.6.8 and have not had any issues like this up to this point. Is this a known issue? Is the extensive mouse listing a red herring? Are there any fixes for either issue?

• Jan 2010 Microsoft update trashed my Win XP (64bit) PC

  I waited until this morning to install these 5 updates. My ancient Win XP (32 bit) PC has no problems but my Win XP 64 bit will not start. From the startup menu none of the 5 options given (e.g. safe mode, last known good configuration, etc) work. After selecting an option, the Windows Logo screen appears. About 9 seconds later a blue screen of death flashes [I can't read the error messages because it's there for about 100 ms] then it cycles through the reboot again. PS: This is a pretty cheap mobo (Ge Force) with an AMD 3 GH chip - but until today it did actually work. What should I do? Reinstall the O/S?

  I manage a bunch of VPSs with memory ranging from 1GB to 8GB. Most of these websites are Joomla websites, and the servers must support multiple sites/users/S-FTP. I use mpm-itk almost exclusively (mostly due to it's convenience in these shared environments). However, I'm aware it isn't known for performance, so I need some advice on making it faster. Due to the lack of documentation when I first went the way of mpm-itk, I included only one setting in the config, and that was to limit each user to 50 clients (the rest I left up to defaults): <IfModule mpm_itk_module> MaxClientsVHost 50 </IfModule> Are there any better alternatives available? Are there any settings supported in mpm-prefork or mpm-worker that are also supported in mpm-itk? Thanks!

• Applying flattened css to xhtml

  Hi, I try to apply flattened css to xhtml (which get from websites). I am using css4j-0.12.1.jar (from http://www.informatica.info/projects/css/) to process the url html content. For a few urls the code seems to be hang. Even no exception is thrown. For a particular stylableelement or style code doesnot return any value and hangs. For a few websites code hang in, CSSStyleDeclaration.getPropertyValue(style); and for a few websites code hang in, CSSStylableElement.getComputedStyle(); I am using the latest jar. Could you please update me, is there any known issue or fix for this. I am not sure where to post this issue. If anyone knows please update me. Thanks in Advance.

• use of Lsh and Rsh keys in windows 7 calculator

  Does anyone know the function of the Lsh and Rsh keys in Windows 7 calculator when it is in Programmer's mode. One would think it's meant to shift bits left and right, but that doesn't seem to happen: sometimes nothing happens, other times I get a 'Result not defined' message in the display. Has anyone figured it out yet, is this a known bug? While we're at it, does anyone have suggestions for a good calculator, one with a decent reference guide / user guide (windows help doesn't seem to give any hints on what any of the keys do, in any mode).

• IE8 complains about SSL name mistmatch

  When visiting an SSL protected website, IE8 complains about the certificate name not matching the website address, but gives no information about the certificate or what name it's looking for. Visiting the same site in IE9 (or IE9 in "IE8 mode"), Firefox, Chrome, and Safari shows no problems, and that the certificate matches the address. Certificate checkers indicate everything is installed and configured correctly. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Is this a known issue or bug in IE8? I've been Googling for similar issues, but due to the uncertainty as to what's actually going on, I'm not sure what to search for. My problem reads similar to this question. However, my server is running Apache2.

• No command window.

  Using 7 build 7600. Wen I try to open a command window, I just get returned to my previous folder/desktop. If I try to open an extended window I get to the UAC, answer yes and again am returned. A check in Sys info reveals the command prompt is running but I can't see the window. I can have multiple instances of cmd.exe running but still no window. My video adapter is GeForce 7600 and I have no other known problems at this time. Thanks in advance.

  we have a customer who is not willing to move from Office 2003 to Office 2010 but he now wants to use Office 365. As you know is Office 365 not compatible with Outlook 2003. Now he asked me if it's possible to buy and install Outlook 2010 and keep the rest as it is. I only found some guides for parallel installation of Office 2007 and Office 2010. So my question is if this solution will work. Or are there any issues known?

• Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • Lighttpd with FastCGI won't create /tmp/fcgi.sock on startup?

  I'm running lighttpd-1.4.19 on a debian 5 box and try to run web2py with fastcgi. The problem with that is, that lighttpd does not create the socket file /tmp/fcgi.sock. If I'm creating the file by myself touch /tmp/fcgi.sock lighttpd will start but will throw this error after some time running: unexpected end-of-file (perhaps the fastcgi process died): pid: 0 socket: unix:/tmp/fcgi.sock My config looks like this: fastcgi.server = ( "/handler_web2py.fcgi" = ( "handler_web2py" = ( #name for logs "check-local" = "disable", "socket" = "/tmp/fcgi.sock", "idle-timeout" = 20, "max-procs" = 1 ) ), ) Is there any known problem with running lighttpd on debian 5? • Too much free space on FreeNAS - ZFS

  I have a FreeNAS server with 3 x 2 To disks in raidz1. I would expect to have about 4 To of space available. When I run zpool list I get: [root@freenas] ~# zpool list NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT main_volume 5.44T 3.95T 1.49T 72% ONLINE /mnt I was expecting a size of 4 To. Also, used space as reported by zpool list does not match what's reported by du: [root@freenas] ~# du -sh /mnt/main_volume/ 2.6T /mnt/main_volume/ There are quite a few things that I dont yet completely understand about ZFS. But at the moment I am mostly worried that I misconfigured my system and that I dont have any storage redundancy. How can I make sure I did not do an horrible mistake ... • booting FreeBSD 9 from USB stick: boot error

  I am trying to boot FreeBSD 9 from a USB stick that I created following the official guidelines: dd if=FreeBSD-9.0-RELEASE-i386-memstick.img of=/dev/da0 bs=64k Booting fails with a simple 'boot error'. I have used this USB stick for quite a while for the very purpose of booting / installing new OSs, but I tried a different one anyway - same problem. I have also reproduced the issue on a different machine. I've acquired to image file over torrent which AFAIK has an md5 check built in, but I downloaded it again anyway directly from a FreeBSD mirror. Same result. Does anyone have any success with this ? I did not find anything related online which seems to suggest this is not a well-known problem. Does anyone have a thought where else to search for the cause of the problem ?

• Using TrueCrypt with File Replication on Windows Server

  We have a few folders that are set to replicate to a DR file server off-site. One of these folders contains a file that is a TrueCrypt volume container. When this file is mounted in TrueCrypt, the file won't replicate (fair enough!). I'm looking at alternatives to improve this situation. One solution I currently have is to have a scheduled task to unmount the volume and then every morning as the volume is needed, have someone mount it. This is a pain slightly because the password is known by a few people (I'm not one and neither are my colleagues who would be performing the mounting operation) so we'd need to continually get them to come over and type it in. The other I had was to have one TrueCrypt container on each server and replicate the contents when they are mounted. I wasn't able to get TrueCrypt to see the mounted volume so I guess this is a no go. Any other solutions I have missed or a fix for the above?

• Unlock file on Windows Server 2003 by remote desktop without rebooting

  We've several Windows Server 2003 machines running, each with its own purposes. There are scheduled jobs which synchronizes some files over SFTP using WinSCP. Very sometimes a newly copied file is left locked in the "inbox" folder without any reason. The machine's own background task (programmed in Java) can't move it to the "processed" folder anymore after processing it. Manually moving it only yields the well known error message Cannot move [filename]: it is being used by another person or program. The only resort is to reboot the machine, but we would of course like to avoid that. Any suggestions? I tried Unlocker which works fine locally at WinXP, but doesn't work at those Win2K3 machines by remote desktop (unlock option doesn't show up in rightclick context menu). I tried Process Explorer as well as described in this blog article, but it caused the server to crash (not sure if that's because it's executed through remote desktop).

• Any way to disable specific CPU sleep modes?

  I just got a new Toshiba Tecra S11 notebook, which has a Core i5 520M CPU, and it appears to suffer from a well-known problem: a high pitched noise when the CPU is idle. Googling around revealed that this is caused by a specific power-saving mode in the CPU. In most cases, C4 mode is blamed for the noise. So my question is: is it possible to disable C4 mode (or any other "sleep" mode) using some utility or BIOS setting? I don't mind if it hurts battery life. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter. It's driving me crazy.
