  I am making a website where users can vote on which category a page is. They can vote that the page is category, for example: a, b, c, or d. Please don't ask what I am using this for, it is not important, I just want to know how to do it. I need to find the most commonly occurring category in the mysql row out of all the votes. Each time a user submits their vote, it submits the "category" that they voted for, and the "page_id". I have this so far: select page_id, category from categories group by page_id You cannot simply use a "COUNT(*) where category = 'a'" then repeat it for each category because there is many more categories in the actual project.

• How to order by a known id value in mysql

  Hi, is it possible to order a select from mysql by using a known id first. Example: $sql = "SELECT id, name, date FROM TABLE ORDER BY "id(10)", id DESC Not sure if the above makes sense but what I would like to do is first start ordering by the known id which is 10 which I placed in quotes "id(10)". I know that cannot work as is in the query but it's just to point out what I am trying to do. If something similar can work I would appreciate it. Thanks.

  I know implementing database is a huge topic, but I want to have a basic understanding of how database systems work (e.g. memory management, binary tree, transaction, sql parsing, multi-threading, partitions, etc) by investigating the source code of the database. Since there are a few already proven very robust open source databases like mysql, sqlite and so on. However, the code are very complicated and I have no clue where to start. Also I find that the old school database textbooks are only explaining the theory, not the implementation details. Can anyone suggest how I should get started and if there are any books that emphasis on the technology and techniques of building dbms used in modern database industry?

  Okay, I thought my head hurt with regular regex, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for with regexp in mysql. I'm trying to look for situations in news articles where a Textile-formatted url has not ended with a slash so: "Catherine Zeta-Jones":/cr/catherinezeta-jones/ visited stack overflow is ok but "Catherine Zeta-Jones":/cr/catherinezeta-jones visited stack overflow is not. [just used Catherine as an example because I'm assuming an alpha search wouldn't catch the hyphen] One of these days I'll have to do that goat sacrifice so I can gain the proper knowledge of regex.   I want to write a MySQL statement like: SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (value1, value2, value3, ...) The trick here is that I do not know ahead of time how many values there will be in the IN(). Obviously I know I can generate the query on the go with string manipulations, however since this will run in a loop, I was wondering if I could do it with a PDO PreparedStatement. Something like: $query = $PDO->prepare('SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (:idList)'); $query->bindValue(':idList', implode(',', $idArray)); Is that possible?

  Say I have "user". It's the key. And I need to keep "user count". I am planning to have record with key "user" and value "0" to "9999+ ;-)" (as many as I'll have). What problems I will drive in if I use Cassandra, HBase or MySQL for that? Say, I have thousand of new updates to this "user" key, where I need to increment the value. Am I in trouble? Locked for writes? Any other way of doing that? Why this is done -- there will be a lot of "user"-like keys. Different other cases. But the idea is the same. Why keep it this way -- because I'll have more reads, so I can always get "counted value" very fast.

  So I've got some images stored in a MySQL database as BLOB's (I know it's better to just store the directory and do it that way, but this is what I need to do for now) and I need to display them on a webpage. Now, I know how to make a script and give it an image header and pull the img src from there, but I have a lot of images from different places for different uses, so I'd have to make a ton of these scripts and I'd rather not clutter up my files like that. Anyway, does anyone know of a function or something I can use to display the image that will run on the same page?

  I upgraded my Delphi to 2010 version and I tried to open and run application written in Delphi 2006. The app is using mysql by dbexpress with libmysql.dll and a second driver found somewhere on the Internet. I can't run it on 2010. I'm always getting "missing libmysql.dll library". I tried to get new version of it but it didn't help. Copying this library into almost all system directories didn't help. I'm out of any ideas what to do, how do I connect to database :(

  I have two mysql queries that return a column of phone numbers. I want am trying to end up with a list of phone numbers that are in one list, but not in the other. So the two queries I have are: SELECT phone FROM civicrm_phone phone LEFT JOIN civicrm_participant participant ON phone.contact_id = participant.contact_id WHERE phone.is_primary = 1 AND participant.id IS NULL and SELECT phone FROM civicrm_phone phone LEFT JOIN civicrm_participant participant ON phone.contact_id = participant.contact_id WHERE phone.is_primary = 1 AND participant.id IS NOT NULL And before anyone asks, the above two queries do not provide mutually exclusive results (based on using IS NULL and IS NOT NULL for the last WHERE statement), since we have related individuals in the database who use the same phone number, but do not necessarily all have a participant.id. All I could find was how to either create the databases by a DBA and grant the privileges on this database to the specific user: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON dbTest.* TO 'user'; or grant privileges on all databases to a user: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'user'; But neither is what I want, because it needs to scale and be secure.

In one of my form i have use rich text editor from the yahoo. now i want to store the data from that text area to mysql database. bcz user can enter anything in that textarea. as example user can enter many double quotes, or single quotes. so i need to store that data which may content many double quotes or many single quotes, so how to do that? normally we store by adding that data in one variable and then put that in sql then fire. but now variable contents many quotes and now i have problem to store. i can't remove that quotes bcz of my style which is generated by rich text editor.   On my site, I have a form that users fill out to become a member. They fill out name, bday, email, etc. Then when they click submit, the data gets into mySQL. But sometimes when a user clicks submit many times or refreshes the page, the data gets inputted to the database more than once. How can I prevent this? Is there a code I can use to only let one set of data get into the database? This is also a problem in my comment section. I allow uses to put comments on people's profiles. But when they abuse the refresh button or submit button, I get like 10 of the same comments. Thanks.

  I have a tb with this col: ein, los, id ... I whant to order the table by this index: win / ( win + los ) * 30 + win / SUM(win) * 70 and then to find the rank for two id's.   I am getting "too many connections" problem in an Asp .Net Mvc application which get fix when i manually kill process through Mysql v6.56 IDE, But on remote hosting computer where i can't kill process each time how can i fix this error. I have tried making a connection to information_schema DB's PROCESSLIST table but when connection is about to execute command there comes an error "access denied of root@loclahostto information_schema". I also have tried to grant all privileges to root@loclahost but still i am not able to fix this problem. I have been coding the same way from last two years but in this application i am getting this problem i have use close each connection in every method. • newbie: how to upload images from a form with PHP and mySQL

  I'm creating a web app (locally, so security doesn't matter) in PHP where the user uploads a set of information and a small .jpeg, which is then inserted into a mySQL table. I can do this no problem with all the text data, but I'm not sure how to cause the image to upload alongside it. I assume I will have to use the blob data type and input type="file", but I fooled around with that a little bit and the solution doesn't seem to be an intuitive extension of how input type="text" works. Do I need to do a lot more PHP scripting to get this to work? Is it possible to upload an image with a form, or is there a necessary intermediate step?
