• Cannot Delete an Empty Folder in Windows 7

  I've used this question's answer by user "Moab" to give myself permission to delete an empty folder, so that I no longer get "accessed denied". However, now when I try removing this folder, I get a message that says "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." This is merely my "eclipse" (IDE) folder that I totally emptied out and am trying to delete, but for some reason cannot. I've tried quite a few things: Via Windows Explorer: Right Click - Delete Via Command Prompt RD /S /Q eclipse del /F eclipse rmdir /S eclipse I'm out of ideas, and I'd really like to delete this folder without having to install any software. I've done a bit of research and this is all I found that I could try. Does anyone have any other ideas?

  I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command. Can you tell me how to do that?

• "Device Not Ready" when attempting to connecting an old (DOS) hard drive to windows 7

  I have an old Western Digital Caviar 2540 hard drive that I am attempting to connect to a Windows 7 machine by using a Bytecc BT-300 USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter. I'm connecting things in the right order (power, then sata, then usb) and the jumper settings on the drive are at present set to slave, but am still having an issue. I am recieving a message that the drive is not initialized. When I go into Computer Management I can see the drive (as "Disk 5, Unknown, Not Initialized"), but when I attempt to initialize it or right-click and select "Offline" It tells me that "the device is not ready". Is there something that I can to to get around this, connect the drive and copy the data that I need off of this drive? Is there a third party tool available that I can use?

• Workstation Build: Single 2.66ghz i-7 with overclock potential, OR Dual 5520 2.26ghz Xeons?

  There are probably better places to ask this, but I am used to the excellent quality of responses on stack overflow. I am rebuilding my desktop in a few months. Aside from normal lightweight internet usage, I use it to run sqlServer, mySql, 1-2 Ubuntu VMs from time to time, lots of IDE's, and a media server for my PS3. The two possible setups cost the exact same amount (within $50) and would both have 12gb 1333mhz ddr3 ram and a 500gb RAID-0 array (250x2). Now, If I go with a single i-7 920 2.66ghz quadcore, I can easily overclock it to 3ghz, and would have cash leftover to get a 160gb ssd (either the ocz vertex or the 120gb intel) for the main OS/Program install drive. Else, I could get a dual lga1366 motherboard with two e5520 Xeon's (2.26ghz),just use the disks I already have. So, do I go for 8 physical/16 virtual cores at 2.26ghz (No overclocking on server boards) with normal disk I/O, or a 4 physical/8 virtual cores at 3.0ghz with really outstanding disk I/O?

  Hi there, I'm a newbie Linux (Ubuntu) user and I'll like to know if someone can give some advices of where to install stuff, which folders don't touch, which is the meaning of each folder and so on. My first concern is, should everything go into my home folder? I've installed "manually" Komodo Edit (it's an IDE) and it has gone to my home folder, I really don't like the idea of having an application there. (in windows I used to have my workfiles/pictures/downloads... partition and then the OS partition with all the apps). So, is there any place where I could install this software? Any advice for having my home folder ordered? Maybe I should create an apps folder in my home dir? Thanks in advance. :) pd: most of the time I use apt to install stuff, but I don't always found the software I want there...

• AHCI on Windows if BIOS does not have the option but all hardware does support it?

  Is it somehow possible to use AHCI on Windows if the BIOS does not have the option to enable it? This is a known problem especially on mid-old Laptops that have chipsets and drives that perfectly support SATA and AHCI, but only provide the legacy IDE mode in BIOS. Especially with SSD's this can often be a problem. I know that Linux has no problems to run everything in SATA and AHCI mode on these machines. So, is there any possibility to also make Windows "override" the BIOS? Some kind of alternative BIOS's, drivers, etc? Or some kind of Linux-based boot module that emulates an AHCI-capable BIOS to Windows while booting up?

• Can you remap "C:\Program Files" like you can with "My Documents"?

  I'm not sure if this is possible, but I'm hoping you guys will know one way or the other! I'm going to be reinstalling windows xp, and the primary master IDE is a smaller 10 gig drive. I'm pretty sure that if I tried to install all my programs back onto the C:\ drive that they'd not all fit. Is it possible to get my Program Files directory to point to a partition on one of my larger drives, so I don't end up with some of my programs on C:\ and others on D:\, E:\, etc?

I used 7 Taskbar Tweaker (http://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker-v1-6) to remove the labels from the buttons, but now I'm looking at multiple identical icons. Is there any way to change the icons of these windows, even though they are the same application? This picture shows 5 windows, all from the same program, and 3 windows from Google Chrome. They all look the same!

• Do hard drives have to be mounted somewhere?

  I'm creating a cheap JBOD box with ~7 IDE hard drives. However when you take into account 3 existing drives + 2 CD drives that are installed as well, I am out of mounting places inside the server. Will I adversely affect or harm the drives if I just stack them on top of each other in the box? Before you ask if they are going to fall over, this box won't be moved and won't really be touched while its in use. Heat (should) be taken care of by the fans. However I am worried about the vibrations that each drive will put out. Is this an actual issue?

The problem is, I had my program pinned, which for some reason was causing the icons to not change. Make sure your program is not pinned for this to work!

• Google Chrome pinned to Windows 7 taskbar not opening under pinned icon

  I have both Google Chrome and Eclipse pinned to my taskbar in Windows 7 64-Bit. However, when I launch these programs, they don't appear to open under the pinned taskbar icon Eclipse behaves similarly. The Eclipse launcher/workspace selector is under the pinned icon, but once the IDE opens, it moves from the pinned icon, to a new group at the end of the taskbar. Unpinning/repinning doesn't seem to do the trick. It's bothersome to have taskbar space wasted on both the launcher icon, and the window button. Anybody have an idea how to get normal behavior out of the taskbar?

Ubuntu, Eeebuntu, Ubuntu netbook edition ? btw is it true that linux's grub overrides mbr so that hardware system restore doesn't work ?

• PC won't boot, even into bios

  Here's the deal: I cleaned a hard drive of some viruses (externally) and put it back into the original pc. This hard drive will boot in any other pc except the original pc. When I try other hard drives in the original pc, they are able to boot. The drive has Windows XP. What is the problem? How can I get this hard drive to work properly? The original hard drive works in other PCs. The PC boots with other hard drives acting as the master. If I boot with no hard drive, I still can't get into the BIOS These are all IDE hard drives The PC doesn't beep, it just boots into a black screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left of the screen

• Installing linux on computer with Marvell adapter

  I recently reinstalled my computer and decided that I want to have a native installation of linux side by side with windows (got tired of VMWare). The thing is upon installation (debian) everything goes fine until the disc detection section - linux can't find my western digital 1TB drive (IDE mode). I don't have the installation disc with me now, but I think that when i changed the mode to AHCI everything worked, though Windows couldn't boot so this is not an option. I have a Marvell 91xx controller. Any ideas?

  I have an ASUS Pentium-R Dual Core CPU running at 2.20Ghz. It has 4 gb of built in ram, currently running a 64 bit Windows 7 . I just started graduate school and Im wondering whether I should go in for a new laptop or just repair the nagging battery on my current one. My requirements include - -Ability to support IDE's - I may end up running Eclipse, Visual Studio's and the like to help with my work. - Ability to run multiple VM's (not concurrently). Im currently running a Ubuntu 12 and 9 as VM's (not sure if this is overloading the system) - I'm a non gamer so I really dont care about a minor glitch caused by running a uber heavy game. -In addition I will have heavy use of Office Application Software and will be using my computer to watch movies and stream media.   Hello All, I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: the database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it. When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it. I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CENTOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all! I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. Any and all input appreciated.

• How to make the Eclipse text editor background transparent?

  Is there a way to make the background of Eclipse IDE text editor transparent? I would like to adjust the alpha transparency of the background, but have the text still be opaque. Perhaps there is a plugin that accomplishes this? I haven't seen any options under preferences. And my search on Google has ended in vain thus far, although I did find some nice color themes. Example (Textmate): Note that the text is still solid. This is important, since making the whole window transparent could cause text to bleed into the desktop wallpaper (or whatever is under Eclipse). On another side note, I'm using the latest version of Eclipse (Helios), on both Windows 7 and Fedora 14. • For web development which is more important - CPU and Graphics card OR Ram and SSD Harddrive?

  Buying a laptop is always hard work and questions about specific models dont age well on forums. A popular dilema (especially with apple macbooks) is whether to spend more for a faster cpu and graphics card but settle for standard ram and hd OR drop down and spend the savings on more ram and a faster harddrive such as a ssd. Im wondering for web development i.e. ide, unit tests, photoshop work and some user testing screen capturing now and again what would provide better performance. ( No games, music production or spielberg standard video editing.) For examples sake the current apple lineup for their 15inch macbookpros. 2.66 cpu i7 4gb ram 5400rpm drive 4gig ram vs 2.4 cpu i5 8gb ram 124gb sdd roughly the same price.

  Building my FIRST computer. Will start with at least - one HDD, I purchased a WD SATA HDD a 10,000RPM VelociRaptor 500GB. I have read that if you use one of the settings, can't remember what it's called, that it would make an HDD rund at IDE speeds??? Could I or should I run it in RAID instead? Is RAID only for more than one HDD/ssd? I would like to get like a 64GB SSD later to maybe speed things up working together. Thanks

• Visual Studio 2012 intermittent lockup

  Visual Studio 2012 intermittently locks up on me. I notice that devenv.exe jumps to 50% CPU utilization. The CPU stays at this level for a few minutes and then drops. While its at 50% utilization I can still use the IDE. However, intermittently it stops responding (as though it was performing some sort of background process). It only lasts for a few seconds. Also this happens when debugging. I'm running under Windows 7 and I'm using Telerik controls. I've disabled add-ins and extensions and have had no success. Any ideas would be appreciated? Thanks

Unfortunately, the embedded glassfish is unable to start properly, as it tries to connect to a remote JMS Provider (at localhost:7676): $ ant test ...   My signed Java applet has been running fine until Java update 19. Now some but not all of our users on Java Update 19 report a java security message stating that our applet contains both signed and unsigned code. The process for creating our applet is as follows: 1: Clean and Build the applet project in Netbeans IDE. 2: Open the Applet jar file in WinRAR and add the required mysql JDBC driver .class files to the jar file. 3: Sign the applet jar file. Can someone please tell me how to determine what code is signed and what code is not signed in our applet? Is there a better way to include the mysql JDBC driver jar file in our applet other than copying the jar file contents into our applet jar file? Thanks
