  • Whats the best way to update Ubuntu 9.04?

    I have a Ubuntu 9.04 server which has no packase support anymore. If I want to update my package lists, I get th following errors: Err http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty-security/multiverse Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 141.30.13.10 80] W: Failed to fetch http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 141.30.13.10 80] .... I read at the official Ubuntu-Support-Page, that there is a update-manager-core-Package to upgrade to a new release. Unfortunately I dont have this package installed and I am unable to install it because of the lack of package sources. EDIT: Installing the package update-manager-core from another release doesn't work because it depends on a higher version of python-apt. (Tried with 10.04) $ dpkg -i update-manager-core_0.134.7_amd64.deb Selecting previously deselected package update-manager-core. (Reading database ... 28743 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking update-manager-core (from update-manager-core_0.134.7_amd64.deb) ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of update-manager-core: update-manager-core depends on python-apt (>= 0.7.13.4ubuntu3); however: Version of python-apt on system is 0.7.9~exp2ubuntu10. update-manager-core depends on python-gnupginterface; however: Package python-gnupginterface is not installed. dpkg: error processing update-manager-core (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: update-manager-core So, whats the best way to upgrade to to current Release without reinstalling the complete (virtual) server?

  • Installing a .deb file manually?

    apt-get install gitosis --fix-missing on my Linode still leads to a 404 (Failed to fetch http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gitosis/gitosis_0.2+20080825-2_all.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 130.89.148.12 80] ) . The correct file location seems to be http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gitosis/gitosis_0.2+20090917-11_all.deb Is there any way I can install this without apt-get, or point apt-get in the right direction somehow? Several other packages on my Debian Linode also point to 404, both from command line and virtualmin.   • X509 Certificates, DigitalSignature vs NonRepudiation (C#)

    We have been handed a set of test sertificates on smart cards for developing a solution that requires XML messages to be signed using PKI. Each (physical) smart card seems to have two certificates stored on it. I import them into the Windows certificate store using software supplied by the smart card provider, and then use code resembling the following to iterate over the installed certificates: foreach (X509Certificate2 x509 in CertStore.Certificates) { foreach (X509Extension extension in x509.Extensions) { if (extension.Oid.Value == "one we are interested in") { X509KeyUsageExtension ext = (X509KeyUsageExtension)extension; if ((ext.KeyUsages & X509KeyUsageFlags.DigitalSignature) != X509KeyUsageFlags.None) { // process certs here We have been told to use the certificates that have the NonRepudiation key usage flag set to sign the XMLs. However, the certificate that has the NonRepudiation flag has this flag only, and not for instance the DigitalSignature flag which I check for above. Does this strike anyone but me as slightly odd? I am in other words told to sign with a certificate that does not (appear to) have the DigitalSignature usage flag set. Is this normal procedure? Any comments? Thanks.

    After I built my iphone 2.2.1 application in sdk 3.0, I get a lot of errors of type §non_lazy_ptr. I am getting it on the CFFTPStream constants, like kCFStreamPropertyFTPPassword and kCFStreamPropertyUserName. Anyone know what causes this?

  • Too late to become a programmer?

    Hi, Working in IT for 5 years, I focused on system integration - testing, performance tests and analysis, automation etc. Altough I am working for one of the biggest IT companies, I have the possibility to come up with my own ideas and realize them - for example I have written C# (with SQL backend) bugtracker application with management elements...and I really liked it. I am very creative person but being 25 y/o, I am wondering whether it is too late. I understand the logic of programming but as I was never very good in math I assume I have no chance to become professional programmer in this age. What do you think? Thanks

  • [OffTopic] PhD is it worth it?

    So I'll be graduating next year (hopefully) and lately I started thinking about getting a PhD in computer science (to be more precise I was thinking about something related to "distributed systems", don't have any specific topics yet in mind), but is it really worth it? A PhD course here lasts 4 years and is free IF you're doing the "normal one" (which means you have class from monday to friday) OR you have to pay if you want to study on the weekends. So I've been thinking about getting a normal full time job (as a JEE programmer) and doing my PhD during the weekends OR doing the normal PhD course (mon-fri) and getting a part time job as a software dev (the main reason I want a job is simple - I need to eat). That would give me practical working experience and theoretical knowledge+a PhD, but it would also mean working 7days a week from 9 to 5 for 4 years straight (sounds like an overkill). Is it, job wise, really worth getting a PhD? As an employer do you prefer people with PhDs or MScs? This might be kinda important - I'm not from the US or western europe, how are PhDs from other countries (I am graduating one of the best, if not the best, school in my country but it's still a central european country...) seen? Are they useless? I won't hide it - after graduation I am thinking about moving abroad.

The database assemblies are already patched to Oracle recommended levels. Customers running EM 12c in online mode (i.e. connected to My Oracle Support) will see the assemblies in their EM console (screenshot below). They can then deploy the Assemblies using the Self-Service Provisioning outlined in the "Cloud Administration Guide". The EM12c agent will be deployed along with the assemblies, so the databases will be managed automatically from the onset. You can also get a general demo of the cloud management features (including assembly deployment) in http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/cloud-mgmt/index.html.   • What is the best database for my needs?

    I am currently using MS SQL Server 2008 but I'm not sure it it is the best system for this particular task. I have a single table like so: PK_ptA PK_ptB DateInserted LookupColA LookupColB ... LookupColF DataCol (ntext) A common query is SELECT TOP(1000000) DataCol FROM table WHERE LookupColA=x AND LookupColD=y AND LookupColE=z ORDER BY DateInserted DESC The table has about a billion rows with 5 million inserted per day. My main problem with SQL Server is that it isn't too easy to shard or spread out the datafiles. Also, exporting seems to max out at 1000rows per second (about 1MB/s) which seems very slow. Another problem I have is, with SQL Server, if I want to add a new LookupCol the log file grows enormously requiring a large amount of rarely used free space on tap. Are there any obvious better solutions for this problem?

  • The method split(String) is undefined for the type String

    I am using Pulse - the Plugin Manager for Eclipse and installed. I have the Eclipse 3.5 for mobile development(Pulsar) profile with a couple other profiles. I realized that the split() method called on a string from code such as below: String data = "one, two, three, four"; data.split(","); generates the error: "The method split(String) is undefined for the type String". I am aware that the split() method did not exist before Java's JRE 1.4 and perhaps could be the cause of the problem. The problem is I don't think I have jre/sdk versions installed. Perhaps there's one in-built with the Pulsar profile and needs editing - but I couldn't tell what settings (and where) needs tweaking. I have checked WindowsPreferencesJavaInstalled JREs and it's set to = jre1.4. Please help thanks.

  • Help me understand Inorder Traversal without using recursion

    I am able to understand preorder traversal without using recursion, but I'm having a hard time with inorder traversal. I just don't seem to get it, perhaps, because I haven't understood the inner working of recursion. This is what I've tried so far: def traverseInorder(node): lifo = Lifo() lifo.push(node) while True: if node is None: break if node.left is not None: lifo.push(node.left) node = node.left continue prev = node while True: if node is None: break print node.value prev = node node = lifo.pop() node = prev if node.right is not None: lifo.push(node.right) node = node.right else: break The inner while-loop just doesn't feel right. Also, some of the elements are getting printed twice; may be I can solve this by checking if that node has been printed before, but that requires another variable, which, again, doesn't feel right. Where am I going wrong? I haven't tried postorder traversal, but I guess it's similar and I will face the same conceptual blockage there, too. Thanks for your time!     Is there a way of running an ASP.NET website in a subfolder of the website? As an example, say I wanted to run the screwturn wiki (http://www.screwturn.eu/) in a folder called "wiki" on my website, can I alter the web.config of the screwturn website to tell it that it is running in the "wiki" folder? (like saying that "~/" = "/wiki/") The wiki would then find its assemblies that are in "~/bin" in "/wiki/bin" and the same for all other folders below the new root.

  • Handling Special char such as ^ÛY, ^ÛR in java

    Hi, Has anybody encountered special char such as ^ÛY, ^ÛR ? Q1. How do I do an ftp of the files containing these chars? The chars are not seen once I do a ftp on AIX (bi or ascii) and hence I am unable to see my program to replace these, working. Q2. My java program doesn't seem to recognise these or replace these if I search for these explicitly (^ÛY, ^ÛR ) in the file however a replace using regular expression seems to work (I could only see the difference in the length of the string). My program is executed on AIX. Any insights why java cannot recognise these? Q3. Does the Oracle database recognise these chars? An update is failing where my program indicates the string to be of lesser length and without these characters but the db complains "value too large for column" as the string to be updated contains these chars and hence longer. thanks in advance, RJ

  • Best way to store sales tax information

    When designing a stock management database system (sales / purchases) what would be the best way to store the various taxes and other such amounts? A few of the fields that could be saved are: Unit price excluding tax Unit price including tax Tax per item Total excluding tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total including tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Total tax (rounded to 2 decimals) Currently the most reasonable solution so far is storing down (roughly) item, quantity, total excluding tax (rounded) and the total tax (rounded). Can anyone suggest some better way of storing this details for a generic system? Also, given the system needs to be robust, what should be done if there were multiple tax values (eg: state and city) which might need to be separated, in this case a separate table would be in order, but would it be considered excessive to just have a rowID and some taxID mapping to a totalTax column?
