Copy Content from Sharepoint2007 to another Sharepoint2007

Hi There, I have a Sharepoint 2007 web farm installation with two site collections, one is a blank site and the other is a migrated Sharepoint 2003 site collection. I want to move some specific content from the migrated 2003 collection to the 2007 collection, however I also want to change the path of where it exists, an example is that in the migrated 2003 collection HR is under Admin HR, in the 2007 collection I want HR to appear before Admin. I've looked around but haven't found a lot of information regarding how to move specific content between sites, any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

RTF File Opens as Read Only from Document Management System (Does not happen for all users)

We have a third party system in place that as one part of its duties hosts RTF files that a user can open, make changes to, and save back into the document management system. Recently we have begun upgrading users to Office 2007 from 2003. We are now hearing that when some users open these documents, they open as Read Only (even though there is no document protection in place and the files are set for Unrestricted Access). Other users though, who also have Word 2007, report no problems. There were no problems for anyone when Word 2003 was being used. I'm sure it's a setting in Word but I'm having a lot of difficulty in identifying where the issue could be. Looking for any assistance on why these RTF files are opening as Read Only for some and not for others when using Word 2007. Thanks! Dave

Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer. Compatability error Installing Sharepoint w/ SP1 on Windows 2008 R2 RC

I am trying to install sharepoint 2007 enterprise with SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 RC 64 bit. I am getting a compatibility error. Here is the text: [Window Title] Program Compatibility Assistant [Main Instruction] This program is blocked due to compatibility issues [Expanded Information] You must install Office SharePoint Server 2007 - Please read Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 962935 with the most recent service pack. Office SharePoint Server 2007 - Please read Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 962935 without service packs has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. I can't find this KB article. I have the most recent SP installer available with my MSDN subscription. Any ideas?

Sharing files between multiple sites using only desktop software

Our organisation has three sites; a head office, where the master copies of company files are stored, plus two branch offices using only workstations and a NAS or two. Currently we're talking about <10GB. At the main office, we have no admin access to the file server, as this is entirely controlled by the larger institution where we are located. For the same reason, we have no VPN remote access to this network. Instead, we simply have access to a network share using over a Novell LAN. Question: how can we share files between offices in way that minimises latency, i.e. that gives us a mirror of the main network share at each site? (There is little likelihood of concurrent editing, and we can live with the odd file conflict now and again). Up to now branch office staff have had to use GotoMyPC-type solutions to remotely access files held at the main office. Or email. I was hoping to use Google Drive on a dedicated workstation at each office to sync the contents of the network share (head office) or NAS (branch offices) via the cloud, but at my last attempt (29 Jun '12), the Google Drive installer would not allow me to designate the remote network share as the "target" folder. (I chose Google Drive over Drobbox et al. as we already use GMail for corporate mail) The next idea was to use a designated workstation at head office to mirror the network share to a local drive, then use Google Drive to push that to the cloud. This seems a step too far. Nor do I have any good ideas about how to achieve this network/local mirroring, as we can't, for example, install the rsync daemon on the server. I do not want to use Google Drive locally on each workstation as this will inconvenience users, and more importantly, move files off the backed-up, well-maintained (UPS, RAID etc) network share at head office. Our budget is only in the £100's. Should we perhaps just ditch the head office server and use something like JungleDisk? At least this presents the user with what appears to be a mapped drive.

Error page for OWA users on a different server?

We are getting ready to do a network-wide upgrade to Exchange 2010. The url for the old 2007 mailboxes is at https://mail.example.com and users who have had their mail box moved will have to go to https://Email.example.com If a user that has a 2010 mailbox attempts to login at the 2007 OWA location, they get a standard 403 Forbidden page. We would like to show them a page of our own making, that includes a link to the 2010 OWA login page. I assumed we could do this with an IIS Custom Error page, but setting the 403.4 error page in IIS on the Default web site doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know how we could get around this? BTW, our OWA for the 2007 boxes in on Windows Server 2003, and IIS 6

Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version. PublishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation Missing

So recently I have had to make the transition from the SharePoint 2007 codebase to SharePoint 2010 codebase. Needless to say there hasn't been much difficulty in the changeover. However in a set of code that I was playing around with and transitioning I did find one change that might cause some pain to others out there that have been programming against the PublishingWeb object in the Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing namespace. The 2007 snippet of code that work just fine in 2007 looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) { PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web); publishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); publishingWeb.Update(); } The 2010 update to the code looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) { PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web); publishingWeb.Navigation.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); //--Had to reference the Navigation object. publishingWeb.Update(); } The purpose of the code is to keep a page from showing up on the global or current navigation when it is added to the pages library. However you see that the update to the 2010 codebase actually makes more "object" sense. It specifies that you are technically affecting the Navigation of the Publishing Web, instead of the Publishing Web itself. I know that this isn't a difficult problem to fix, but I thought it would be something quick to help out the general public. Michael

This is essentially a question about constructing an SQL query. The db is implemented with sqlite3. I am a relatively new user of SQL. I have two tables and want to join them in an unusual way. The following is an example to explain the problem. Table 1 (t1): id year name ------------------------- 297 2010 Charles 298 2011 David 300 2010 Peter 301 2011 Richard Table 2 (t2) id year food --------------------------- 296 2009 Bananas 296 2011 Bananas 297 2009 Melon 297 2010 Coffee 297 2012 Cheese 298 2007 Sugar 298 2008 Cereal 298 2012 Chocolate 299 2000 Peas 300 2007 Barley 300 2011 Beans 300 2012 Chickpeas 301 2010 Watermelon I want to join the tables on id and year. The catch is that (1) id must match exactly, but if there is no exact match in Table 2 for the year in Table 1, then I want to choose the year that is the next (lower) available. A selection of the kind that I want to produce would give the following result id year matchyr name food ------------------------------------------------- 297 2010 2010 Charles Coffee 298 2011 2008 David Cereal 300 2010 2007 Peter Barley 301 2011 2010 Richard Watermelon To summarise, id=297 had an exact match for year=2010 given in Table 1, so the corresponding line for id=297, year=2010 is chosen from Table 2. id=298, year=2011 did not have a matching year in Table 2, so the next available year (less than 2011) is chosen. As you can see, I would also like to know what that matched year (whether exactly , or inexactly) actually was. I would very much appreciate (1) an indication (yes/no answer) of whether this is possible to do in SQL alone, or whether I need to look outside SQL, and (2) a solution, if that is not too onerous.

What is a long-term strategy to deal with CPU fan dust in my home office?

There are numerous discussions of CPU overheating and how sometimes this can be corrected by removing the dust from the CPU fan. I have read many of these, but I can't find anyone expressing a long-term strategy to deal with this problem. There are some suggestions here, for example, about how often the inside of the computer should be dusted. But I find this generally unsatisfactory. As it stands, in my rather dusty house (heated by a wood stove, with no central air circulation), I need to vacuum out the CPU fan every 3 to 4 months. At high CPU load, this can make a difference between 65C and 100C. I'm tired of hauling out the vacuum every time I anticipate high CPU load. What steps can I take to deal with this systematically in the long-term? Moving my high CPU load computing to the cloud is not a realistic option. Neither is vacuuming my home office more than once a week! (Details: my computer is on the floor in a Cooler Master HAF922 case, and uses an Intel CPU fan on an i7 chip) EDIT: While this would definitely solve the problem (submerging motherboard in mineral oil), it is a bit of an expensive solution.

I am having a hard time with ADO.NET Data Services (formerly code-named Astoria) as it gives me a bogus exception when I try to insert a new entity from the silverlight client and trying in a clean project (the same code) doesn't. My question may seem somewhat odd, but I hope that my specifications will clarify EXACTLY what it is that I am after. I need some help choosing the right tooling for a particular endeavour. My background is in desktop application development and large back-end systems. I have worked primarily on the Microsoft stack using C# and the .Net framework. My goal is to develop a 2D, RTS style, interactive office simulation. The simulation will model various office spaces, office equipment, employees and their interactions with one another. The idea is to abstract the concept of an office completely. Under the hood the application will do many things that are nothing like a game. This includes P2P networking, VPN tunnelling, streaming video, instant messaging, document collaboration, remote screen sharing, file-sharing, virus scanning, VOIP, document scanning, faxing, emailing, distributed computing, content management and much more! A somewhat similar thing has been attempted by IBM, where they created a virtual office in second life. If their attempt was a game, the game-play would be notably horrible, to say the least! The users/players will drive and control my application through the various objects modelled in the simulation. A single application capable of performing all of these various tasks would be a nightmare to navigate for even the most expert user. Using the concept of a game, I can easily separate functionality by assigning them to objects that relate 1-1 with their real world counter-parts. This can greatly simplify computing for novice users, with many added benefits in terms of visibility, transparency of process and centralized configuration. My hope is to make complex computing tasks accessible to all kinds of users and to greatly reduce the cognitive load associated with using the many different utilities and applications inside office settings. The complexity is therefore limited to the complexity of the space in which you find yourself. I want the application to target as many platforms as possible and run on computers that have no accelerated graphics capabilities. The simulation won't contain any of the fancy eye-candy you find in modern games, to the contrary, my "game" will purposefully be clean and simple. The closest thing I could imagine would be an old game like "Theme Hospital" or the first instalment of "The Sims". All the content will be pre-created and not user-generated like Second Life. New functionality will be added via a plugin system. Given my background and nature of my "game", I would like to spend most of my time writing code that does not have to do with the simulated office, as the "game" is really just a glorified application menu. I have done much reading about existing engines, frameworks and tools. I need the help of an experienced game developer who has tried and tested various products over the years who can guide me in the right direction given my very particular needs. I would appreciate any help I can get!

CNAME to another domain fails on some office networks, why?

Our domain "aspenfasteners.com" is hosted by Volusion. We have CNAME records "find" and "search" which point to site indexing accounts on www.picosearch.com. These addresses fail on SOME private office networks which have their own DNS. We suspect the problem comes from Volusion's own name servers, n2.volusion.com and n3.volusion.com. Volusion support on problems this technical is non-existant. We have tried an NSLOOKUP on find.aspenfasteners.com with level 2 debugging info, and we got the results below. Is it possible that the local DNS is recursing to Volusion's name servers, and that while Volusion DOES return the canonical name, they do NOT resolve the address? Can anybody with expertise in this sort of stuff PLEASE look at the NSLOOKUP below and tell me if we are right, because Volusion is giving me absolutely NO support on this topic. SharePoint 2010 release date - is it that important?

There has been lots of excitement in the SharePoint community over the last few days as Microsoft have announced the official release date of SharePoint 2010. May 12th is the date for your diaries (RTM in April.) The twittersphere has been telling everyone for the last few days about this news and there is much excitement. The major conferences this year all seem to have a SharePoint 2010 focus and some are entirely focussed on the new product (e.g. SharePoint Evolution Conference.) Now by all accounts Microsoft have plugged some significant functionality gaps that exist in WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 and provided some exciting new functionality. You don't need me to tell you about these as the MVPs (and other community members) are doing a sterling job, after all that is why Microsoft has MVPs in the first place. Lets get real for a second though as there is a significant investment involved in moving to SharePoint 2010: Firstly you need 64 bit architecture across the board, now for some environments that is no inconsequential hurdle, that's a pretty significant roadblock. The development farm, test farm and UAT farm are all going to require the same infrastructure upgrades. To take advantage of the tooling for SP2010 you will need to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 and your development team is going to require 64 bit hardware/OS too. I would not recommend installing SP 2010 in client installation mode (i.e. for Windows 7) on your developer machines, I would use this for demo machines only. Something that lots of people seem to forget in all their whooping and hollering about the new release is that there is a large amount of end user training going to be required as the browser UI has now adopted the omnipotent ribbon interface and there are other new and more complicated features. SharePoint Designer has also entirely changed in both look and feel and some significant feature changes have taken place. Lest we should forget that some companies have not long upgraded to MOSS 2007 and are yet to see a significant ROI for that project. And the reticence that most companies feel about implementing v1 Microsoft products. This is only the surface of the deeper issues which would be involved in any upgrade process, so I guess I share a small part of the concern voiced by Mark Miller of EndUserSharePoint.com. Is SharePoint 2010 relevant? I don't share this sentiment in its entirety as I firmly believe that all companies should be looking at SharePoint 2010 from day one, however most large scale existing implementations of MOSS 2007 are going to be several years away from a serious upgrade project. So should the conference organisers and the SharePoint community as a whole be a little more understanding of the real world issues? It's easy to get carried away in the excitement of a new product and new tools to play with but there needs to be a focus on the real world issues that most people are facing day to day and at the moment and for the short term future (at the very least the next 12 months) that is fairly and squarely in the WSS 2.0/3.0 and SPS 2003/MOSS 2007 camps. Don't get me wrong, I am very very excited about getting to grips with SharePoint 2010 in the real world and I cannot wait for my first real project to come along, but for now I am just being realistic about the reality for most people who work with SharePoint. I have been spending a lot of time on www.sharepointoverflow.com recently as there is a community of people building up who are committed to answering the real world questions that folks are dealing with every day. I urge you to take a look and either ask or answer some questions direct from the front line of the SharePoint world.

What I've Gained from being a Presenter at Tech Events

As I've said before life happens and it gets in the way of best laid out plans. I thought about creating some type of watch with some app that basically dictates using dragon naturally speaking to Wordpress, but alas no time and the write processing capabilities just don't exist yet.So to get to my point Alison Gianotto created this blog post: http://www.snipe.net/2014/06/why-you-should-stop-stalling-and-start-presenting/. I like the message she has stated in this post and I want to share something personal.It was around 2007 that I was seriously looking into leaving the technology field altogether and going back to school. I was calling places like Washington University in Saint Louis and University of Missouri Kansas City asking them how I could go about getting into some type of post graduate medical school program. My entire high school career was based on Medical Explorers and somehow becoming a doctor. I did not want to take my hobby and continue using it as a career mechanism. I was unhappy, but I didn't realize why I was unhappy at the time. It was really a lot of bad things involving the lack of self confidence and self esteem. Overall I was not in a good place and it took me until 2011 to realize that I still was not in a good place in life.So in about April 2007 or so I started this blog that you guys have been reading or occasionally read. I kind of started passively stalking people by reading their blogs in the SharePoint and .Net communities. I also started listening to .Net Rocks & watching videos on their corresponding training for SharePoint, WCF, WF, and a bunch of other technologies. I wanted more knowledge, so someone suggested I go to a user group. I've told this story before about how I met Jeff Julian & John Alexander, so that point I will spare you the details. You know how I got to my first user group presentation and how I started getting involved with events, so I'll also spare those details.The point I want to touch on is that I went out I started speaking and that path I took helped me gain the self confidence and self respect I needed. When I first moved to NYC I couldn't even ride a subway by myself or walk alone without getting lost. Now I feel like I can go out and solve any problem someone throws at me. So you see what Alison states in her blog post is true and I am a great example to that point. I stood in front of 800 or so people at SharePoint Conference in 2011 and spoke about a topic. In 2007 I would have hidden or stuttered the entire time. I have now spoken at over 70 events and user groups. I am a top 25 influencer in my technology. I was a most valued professional for years in a row in Microsoft SharePoint. People are constantly trying to gain my time, so that they can pick my brain for solutions and other life problems. I went from maybe five or six friends to over hundreds of friends in various cities across the globe. I'm not saying it's an instant fame and it doesn't take a ton of work, but I have never looked back once at my life and regretted the choice I made in 2007. It has lead me to a lot of other things in my life, including more positivity and happiness. If anyone ever wants to contact me and pick my brain on a presentation go ahead. If you want me to help you find the best meetup that suits you for that presentation I can try to help too (I might be a little more helpful in the Microsoft or iOS arenas though). The best thing I can state is don't be scared just do it. If you need an audience I can try to pencil it in my schedule. I can't promise anything, but if you are in NYC I can at least try.

Today I had a little spare time during the morning hours and I decided that after checking MVA that I'm going to query the available course material over at Pluralsight. Wow, thanks to fantastic corporations and acquisitions there are lots of courses available. Nicely split by SharePoint version as well as particular interest group. Additionally, I found a couple of online blogs and community sites that I'm going to visit regularly during the next couple of weeks. Today's resource(s) Of course, I'm "all in" for the latest developer resources: SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 1 - Understanding the Platform and Developer Experience SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 2 SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 3 SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 4 SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 5 SharePoint 2013 Developer Ramp-Up - Part 6 I guess, I'm going to stick to the Pluralsight library until the end of this week. We'll see... Anyway, apart from the video material I came across a couple of other websites which I'd like to list here, too. That's mainly for personal reference instead of bookmarking in the browser, I'll use my own blog for that purpose. Takeaway First contact with the 'real stuff' in order to get an idea about software development in Microsoft SharePoint and beyond. Unfortunately and as already expected, the marketing department over at Microsoft seemed to have nothing better to do than to invent new names and baptise literally the same product with every release. Luckily, the release cycles between versions have been three years (roughly) - 2007, 2010, and 2013. Nonetheless, there will be a lot of version-specfic issues to tackle during this learning phase. Especially, when it's about historical expressions like 'WSS'* like I had it yesterday... It's going to be exciting and demanding to catch up with roughly 6-7 years of development and changes. Okay, let's face it. * WSS stands for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 which forms the 'core engine' of SharePoint 2007. Part 1 of Andrew Connell's series on SharePoint 2013 for developers provides a brief history and overview of the various product names and their relation to the actual SharePoint version. At the moment, the following two options seem to be my future fields of operation: Client-Side Object Model (CSOM) REST API and OData syntax As part of my job assignment, I see myself developing within Visual Studio 2012/2013. Most probably the client development in C# will be using CSOM but of course I'll keep an eye on the REST API, too. JavaScript has quite a momentum since a while and it would a shame to ignore this type of opportunity and possibilities.

'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' 64x Sql Server and 86x Office???

The error: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' cannot be used for distributed queries because the provider is configured to run in single-threaded apartment mode. And the answers I'm seeing is a conflict between 64 bit Sql Server and 32 bit Office. Is there a way to run an openrowset on Excel into Sql Server? insert into dbo.FiscalCalendar select * from openrowset('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Excel 12.0 Xml;Database=C:\Users\v-chrha\Desktop\fy11.xlsx;', 'Select * from [Sheet1]')

How to use the Automation object model of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, etc.) in "plain" C

I finally found the object model documentation for Microsoft Office. However it talks about interop assemblies and stuff that sounds like .NET. I don't use .NET directly, and I don't really want to learn much about it. Is there a way to just use plain COM/ActiveX classes/interfaces to automate MS Word/Excel?

Can I turn off inline syntax checking in the Office 2003 VBA editor?

As anybody who uses VBA in Office 2003 will know, it has the extremely frustrating tendency to do a syntax check every time you click off a line. For example, if I start writing a line of code, I might go > For Each application In And then think "crap, what's the application collection called?" So I'll hit "page up" to find it, and get (in this case) a "Compile Error". Can I turn this off?
