  • What is the state-of-the-art for using Broadcom Crystal hardware?

    I just bought a Dell Mini 1012, which comes with a Broadcom Crystal media accelerator chip. I'd like to know what is the current state-of-the-art with regard to using this hardware on Ubuntu? What I mean by this is, what is the best way to install drivers to make use of this hardware, and what media players currently support it? I've read that XBMC currently does, but what about gstreamer? Ideally, I'd like to find a solution so that I can accelerate Flash videos using the device. It seems like one strategy may be to download Flash videos to the hard drive and play them with an external, Crystal-enabled media player, and so that seems like one option, but I'm wondering if any of the free flash alternatives (Gnash and Lightspark) support hardware acceleration of flash video using the Crystal API? It seems like there is a lot of information about all of this on the web, but it's not consolidated, and seems like a rapidly moving target, so any insight anyone may have into this would be appreciated.

  • Using components in the XNA Game State Management example?

    In the game state management example at the App Hub, they say that if you want to use components in the example you can extend the GameScreen to host other components inside itself. I'm having a very hard time trying to tie this up. I tried extending the GameScreen class by adding a public property of public List<DrawableGameCompnent> components { get; set; } and then add my components to that list when I initialize the current screen as well as looping over the components in the LoadContent, Update and Draw methods. However, this doesn't feel like the correct way to go - mainly because it doesn't work when I get to the implementation of my GameplayScreen. Any thoughts?

  • Zip Code to City/State and vice-versa in a database?

    I'm new to SQL and relational databases and I have what I would imagine is a common problem. I'm making a website and when each user submits a post they have to provide a location in either a zip code or a City/State. What is the best practice for handling this? Do I simply create a Zip Code and City and State table and query against them or are there ready made solutions for handling this? I'm using SQL Server 2005 if it makes a difference. I need to be able to retrieve a zip code given a city/state or I need to be able to spit out the city state given a zip code.

    Given an instance of IDirect3DDevice9, what approaches are available to put it in its original render state (i.e. the state it was in when the device was initially created)? The cleanest way that I've come across is to create a state block via IDirect3DDevice9::CreateStateBlock just after the device has been created so that it can be applied later. Unfortunately, I'm operating under the constraints of an existing project such that I can't modify the device creation code; by the time my component gets the device, its default state has been modified.   • Why is not there a python compiler to native machine's code?

    As I understand, the cause of the speed difference between compiled languages and python is, that the first compiles code all way to the native machine's code, whereas python compiles to python bytecode, to be interpreted by the PVM. I see that this way python codes can be used on multiple operation system (at least in most cases), however I do not understand, why is not there an additional (and optional) compiler for python, which compiles the same way as traditional compilers. This would leave to the programmer to chose, which is more important to them; multiplatform executability or performance on native machine. In general; why are not there any languages which could be behave both as compiled and interpreted?

    Short story: syncing my iPhone music with banshee didn't work and what's worse is, banshee deleted or corrupted the existing music on the phone. I'm sick I tried to sync music at all. And I must admit, if I were not a developer I probably would have switched back to windows instantly. So my questions are these: What is the state of apple device support in ubuntu? iPhone and iPod in particular. Is there support for any version of iOS? For example is there support for iOS5? If not, will there be? When? What I can do to get support delivered quicker? What does jail breaking mean? You tend to read that quite a lot when troubleshooting, though I imagine most people don't understand what it means. And do you need to jail break the phone in order to sync it with ubuntu?

  • Rsync Push files from linux to windoes. ssh issue - connection refused

    For some reason I want to run a script to move files from Linux machine to Windows. I have installed cwRsync on my windows machine and able to connect to linux machine. When i execute following command: rsync -e "ssh -l "piyush"" -Wgovz --timeout 120 --delay-updates --remove-sent-files /usr/local/src/piyush/sync/* "[email protected]:/cygdrive/d/temp" Where 10.0.0.60 is my widows machine and I am running above command on Linux - CentOS 5.5. After running command I get following error message: ssh: connect to host 10.0.0.60 port 22: Connection refused rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(463) [sender=2.6.8] [root@localhost sync]# ssh [email protected] ssh: connect to host 10.0.0.60 port 22: Connection refused I have modified my firewall settings on widows to allow all ports. I think this issue is due to SSH Daemon not present on my windows machine. So I tried installing OpenSSH on my machine and running ssh-agent but didn't helped. I tried similar command to run on my widows machine to pull files from Linux and its working fine. For some reason I want command for Linux machine so that I can embed it in a shell script. Can you suggest me if I am missing anything. I am already having cwRsync installed on my widows and running it in daemon mode using --damemon option. And I am able to login using ssh from windows machine to linux machine. When I issue bellow command, it just blocks for 120 seconds (timeout I specified in command) and exits saying there is timeout. rsync -e "ssh -l piyush" -Wgovz --timeout 120 --delay-updates --remove-sent-files /usr/local/src/piyush/sync/* "[email protected]:/cygdrive/d/temp" After starting rsync on widows, I checked, rsyc is running. And widows firewall setting are set to minimal, and on Linux machine stopped iptables service so that port 873 (default rsync port) is not blocked. What can be the possible reason that Linux machine is not able to connect to rsync-daemon on windows machine?

  • Is dual-booting an OS more or less secure than running a virtual machine?

    I run two operating systems on two separate disk partitions on the same physical machine (a modern MacBook Pro). In order to isolate them from each other, I've taken the following steps: Configured /etc/fstab with ro,noauto (read-only, no auto-mount) Fully encrypted each partition with a separate encryption key (committed to memory) Let's assume that a virus infects my first partition unbeknownst to me. I log out of the first partition (which encrypts the volume), and then turn off the machine to clear the RAM. I then un-encrypt and boot into the second partition. Can I be reasonably confident that the virus has not / cannot infect both partitions, or am I playing with fire here? I realize that MBPs don't ship with a TPM, so a boot-loader infection going unnoticed is still a theoretical possibility. However, this risk seems about equal to the risk of the VMWare/VirtualBox Hypervisor being exploited when running a guest OS, especially since the MBP line uses UEFI instead of BIOS. This leads to my question: is the dual-partitioning approach outlined above more or less secure than using a Virtual Machine for isolation of services? Would that change if my computer had a TPM installed? Background: Note that I am of course taking all the usual additional precautions, such as checking for OS software updates daily, not logging in as an Admin user unless absolutely necessary, running real-time antivirus programs on both partitions, running a host-based firewall, monitoring outgoing network connections, etc. My question is really a public check to see if I'm overlooking anything here and try to figure out if my dual-boot scheme actually is more secure than the Virtual Machine route. Most importantly, I'm just looking to learn more about security issues. EDIT #1: As pointed out in the comments, the scenario is a bit on the paranoid side for my particular use-case. But think about people who may be in corporate or government settings and are considering using a Virtual Machine to run services or applications that are considered "high risk". Are they better off using a VM or a dual-boot scenario as I outlined? An answer that effectively weighs any pros/cons to that trade-off is what I'm really looking for in an answer to this post. EDIT #2: This question was partially fueled by debate about whether a Virtual Machine actually protects a host OS at all. Personally, I think it does, but consider this quote from Theo de Raadt on the OpenBSD mailing list: x86 virtualization is about basically placing another nearly full kernel, full of new bugs, on top of a nasty x86 architecture which barely has correct page protection. Then running your operating system on the other side of this brand new pile of shit.     I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard, and made some other changes that have caused my next Time Machine backup to be quite large. Previous to the upgrade my backup drive had filled up, so Time Machine was deleting old backups to make room for new ones. When Time Machine started the first backup after the upgrade, it displayed a message that it was freeing up space. But it wasn't able to free up enough: (The disk has 320 GB capacity.) How can I free up more space on the disk (without reformatting or deleting all the existing backups)? I don't want to recklessly delete files and take the risk of confusing Time Machine.

    Trying to write a python program to create a simulated data stream and feed it, through a named pipe, to a VMware virtual machine. The host is running Ubuntu 11.10 and VMware player 5.0.0. The Vm is running Ubuntu netbook 10.04.
