  I just want a little clarification concerning hosted CMS like shopify.com, solidshops.com (i learnt shopify runs on ruby on rails) so let me be specific about hosted CMS based on Drupal :: www.buzzr.com, www.drupalgardens.com and www.pagebuild.net etc.. What i want to know is 1) Do they use the Multi-Site feature in Drupal to automatically creates all those 1000's of sites they host when a user sign up? 2) Do they create those 1000's of sites as sub-sites(if you like let me say subdomains)? 3) Do they use a different way other than the Multi-Site in Drupal?

• SEO consequences for merging country sites in a .com

  I am in the process of refactoring a number of rental portals I've built for a company with locations in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Instead of the current setting of each country site running under its own domain name: www.companyname.de www.companyname.ch www.companyname.at I would love to merge them all in this way: www.companyname.com/de www.companyname.com/ch www.companyname.com/at with the country TLDs doing a 301 redirect to the respective .com address. However, I have been repeatedly told not to do this due to likely problems with SEO - the business is very SEO dependent, and being a rental chain, needs to be strong in local results. So the question is: Is there an unavoidable hit in Search Engine Optimization when redirecting to a central .com domain? What measures can be taken to soften the blow? What comes to my mind is explicitly specifying a lang attribute in the html tag. Are there any other ways to specifically point out geographical location for sub-directories?

• What do I need to get a job with a major game company?

  I've been recently working with DirectX and getting familiar with game engines, sub-systems and have done game development for the last 5 years. I have a real question for those whom have worked in larger game making companies before. How is it possible to get to into these big game creators such as Ubisoft, Infinity Ward or EA. I'm not a beginner in my field and I'm going to produce a real nice 2D platform with my team this year, which is the result of 5 years 2D game creation experience. I'm working with prepared engines such as Unity3D or Game Maker software and using .Net with C# to write many tools for our production and proceeding in my way but never had a real engine programming experience 'till now. I'm now reading good books around this topic but I wanted to know: Is it possible to become an employee in big game company by just reading books? I mean beside having an active mind and new ideas and being a solution solver.

  I was having some problem with Software center. So tried to reinstall it. But While removing it give me an error. (Reading database ... 150986 files and directories currently installed.)   I have a multi-language site for English and Chinese (Hong Kong). My previous setting for Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk) had: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh-hk" xml:lang="zh-hk"> Shortly, I began to notice browser with other Chinese language sub-codes like zh-tw and zh-cn were seeing my English site in search engines instead of Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk), which makes sense. I want to change my html lang to: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh" xml:lang="zh"> Would this cover all Chinese language settings? Also, would Google prefer to show pages that match language subcodes of the browser/country (zh-hk for Hong Kong, zh-cn for Taiwan) than a general language code (zh)?

  Our team of developers are going to start holding monthly meetings for the purposes of cross training and knowledge improvement. We're looking for ideas for topics to discuss. We've already made a list of some obvious ones, such as discussions/training on specific applications, proper usage of TFS for source control, bug tracking and code reviews, coding standards, and corporate architecture. The problem we're having is that we are a cross-platform development team so we don't want to look at topics that only apply to certain members of the team (Sql, .NET, reporting, third party apps, etc). We'll use sub-team meetings for those. So what other topics that would apply across a broad development team would be good for these training sessions?

• Architecture guidelines for a "single page web-app"

  I'm going to start a side project to build a "single page" web application. The application needs to be real-time, sending updates to the clients as changes happen. Are there any good resources for best-practice approaches wrt the architecture for these kinds of applications. The best resource I've found so far is the trello architecture article here: http://blog.fogcreek.com/the-trello-tech-stack/ To me, this architecture, although very sexy, is probably over-engineered for my specific needs - although I do have similar requirements. I'm wondering if I need to bother with a sub/pub at the server side, could I not just push updates from the server when something happens (e.g. when the client sends an update to the server, write the update to the db, and then send an update to the clients). Tech-wise, I'm probably looking to build this out in Node.JS or maybe Ruby, although the architecture guidelines should to some extent apply to any underlying server technologies.

  With the release of WebCenter Content PS5, a new folder architecture called 'Framework Folders' was introduced.  This is meant to replace the folder architecture of 'Folders_g'.  While the concepts of a folder structure and access to those folders through Desktop Integration Suite remain the same, the underlying architecture of the component has been completely rewritten.  One of the main goals of the new folders is to scale better at large volumes and remove the limitations of 1000 content items or sub-folders within a folder.  Along with the new architecture, it has a new look and a few additional features have been added.  One of those features are Query Folders.  These are folders that are populated simply by a query rather then literally putting items within the folders.  This is something that the Library has provided, but it always took an administrator to define them through the Web Layout Editor.  Now users can quickly define query folders anywhere within the standard folder hierarchy. The software/hardware environment I currently do development in is quite slow with respect to compilation times and time it takes the whole system to test. The system is quite old/complex and thus splitting it into a several smaller, more manageable sub-projects is not feasible in a neare future. I have realized is what really hinders the development progress is my code reading skills. How do I improve my code reading skills, so I can spot most of the errors and issues in the code even before I hit the "do compile" key, even before I start the debugger?

• Network Manager Applet menu freezes and does not respond

  Since the latest update in Ubuntu 10.10, the nm-applet has started doing some strange things. I boot up the PC, all is fine, internet works, etc... but after a period of time, approx and hour, the nm-applet menu in the Gnome panel fails to respond. when I click on the icon, the menu appears, all looks well, but when I select any option, eg DISCONNECT, nothing happens. Even the VPN sub menu disappears (no triangle to select the menu.) However I do not lose the network connection... If I Run this script: killall nm-applet /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart nm-applet all returns as normal, for a while... weird? i tried uninstall/reinstall... I even reinstalled Ubuntu, but once the latest updates are applied this issues arises... Any help?

• Unable to sync files not located in the Ubuntu One folder

  I have the option to sync files in nautilus, however when the option is selected nothing happens. I am able to SLOWLY sync files in the Ubuntu One folder (unless in sub-folders), but only there. Why give the option if it does not work? This really is still beta, so to charge for this service is terrible. I am a little frustrated at the moment, I have tried all sorts; removing accounts to a fresh Ubuntu install! I am at a loss :-( Can anyone else sync files outside the Ubuntu One folder, if so how? Thanks

• How to integrate game logic in game engines

  Recently I'm working on a 2d game engine example in .Net with C#. My main problem is that I can't figure out how I should include the game logic within the game. Currently I have a base engine which is a set of classes that they are running sub-systems like Render, Sound, Input and Core functionality. There is an editor which helps the user to add resources, build levels, write scripts and other stuffs. I came up with an idea to use Reflection and CSharpCodeProvider from my editor to compile the written code. This way I can get an executable of my product too. This way is quite well but I would like to know what's really the solution and architecture to do this. My engine's role is 2d platform. The scripting language is C# right now because I can't consist any other embeddable language for now. The game needs compilation and CSharpCodeProvider is the only way for me to do it meantime.

• LaTeX-like display programming environment

  I used to be a hobbyist programmer, but now I'm also a fairly experienced physicist and find myself programming to solve certain problems quite a lot. In physics, we use variables with superscripts, subscripts, italics, underlines, etc etc. To bridge this gap to the computer we usually use LaTeX. Now, I generally use MATLAB for handling any data and such, and find it very irritating that I can't basically use LaTeX for variable names. Something as simple as sy has to be named either sigma_y or some descriptive name like peak_height_error. I don't necessarily want full on workable LaTeX in my code, but I do want to be able to use greek letters and super/sub-scripts at the very least. Does this exist?

• Project planning and customer tracking system

  First off, sorry if this is the wrong 'stack' site, but it seemed like a good place to start. I'm happy to report that my services as a web developer are starting to be in quite a lot of demand, and I have a few existing and potentially new customers all lining up - but I'm finding it very hard to keep track of everything. What I'm hoping for is some (preferably web-based) system which I can use to keep track of who my customers are, the various projects that I've got going on for them, and (if possible) the individual sub-tasks that make up each project. What would be even better is if the relevant customer was able to log into the site, and see the process of their projects. I do hope you know what I'm talking about, and that you'll be able to offer some suggestions of either web-base sites that offer something along these lines, or of some open source solution or something like that? Our real world tests have produced mixed results as well, making it even more confusing.

• How can I best study a problem to determine whether recursion can/should be used?

  In some cases, I fail to see that a problem could be solved by the divide and conquer method. To give a specific example, when studying the find max sub-array problem, my first approach is to brute force it by using a double loop to find the max subarray. When I saw the solution using the divide and conquer approach which is recursion-based, I understood it but ok. From my side, though, when I first read the problem statement, I did not think that recursion is applicable. When studying a problem, is there any technique or trick to see that a recursion based (i.e. divide and conquer) approach can be used or not?

• Google Analytics - Unable to get GA Tracking

  We've been using GA for a few years with no probs. About 2-3 weeks ago we tried to clean up some of our tracking and on one of our profiles, it's not working anymore (since oct 10.) First, some context then some GA Debugging code. 1. Context. We have the following setup: different root domains AND different sub-domains on one of the root domains. www.website.com www.website.com.au www.anotherWebsite.com foo.website.com baa.website.com So what we're doing is the following: each root domain and each sub-domain get their own tracking code. This way we can allow separate people (from outside our company) to access only their own data. Eg. a manager for foo.website.com can only see data related to that domain .. and see data on the other domains. Have a last account which is the SUM of all the domains. this is for us. so we can see total numbers. So to do this, we have two trackers that fire off, on the page. the individual accounts all work fine - they seem to be tracking data ok. the 'global' account is not working and this gives us the = Tracking Not Installed error. This has been going on since oct 10. So the wait 24/48/72 hours thing is waaaaay over. 2. GA Debug code. Installing GA Debug chrome extension gives the following output. I've tried to hide anything that could be considered secret. UA-XXXXX34-1 == Global account (which isn't working any more). • How can I recursively change the permissions of files and directories?

  I have ubuntu installed on my local computer with apache / php / mysql. I now have a directory at /var/www - inside which I have several of my ongoing projects. I also work with opensource ( drupal, magento, sugarcrm ). The problem I am facing is changing file permission with terminal. Sometime I need to change the permission of entire folder and its subsequent sub-folders and files. I have to individually change using sudo chmod 777 foldername How can I do this recursively. Also why do I have to always do it 777, I tried 755 for folders and 644 for files, but that won't work.
