• Your experiences with TDD [closed]

  In your experience, does TDD prove to be a useful approach in all development projects? Do you take the approach of TDD even when working on an existing project? Also, how does mocking tie in with a TDD discipline? I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for developers' advice, tips and learning resources regarding TDD's usage based on their experience. I'm going to spend the day equipping myself with enough knowledge about TDD to start making small steps towards using it but I don't know to what extent I should be using it.

• Mouse and keyboard stop working after suspend or screensaver lock

  If I leave the computer and let it run into screensaver and lock the screen, the mouse left click won't go back to work. If I suspend the computer, the keyboard won't get back to work. It started after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04. Any tips to solve this problem? • Wheres my memory going?

  My machine keeps 'freezing' before eventaully logging out with all the programs exiting. This is rather annoying, and I think its because I keep running out of memory. I am not running any custom software, just netbeans, chrome etc. (Stuff I usually run on other ubuntu computers without issue). For some reason my memory usage is through the roof as seen here, but I can't quite figure out why. Here is a screenshot which may be useful with htop and gnome-system monitor open as user and as root. I notice that my console-kit-daemon is taking up about a gig of 'virtual memory'. Is that normal? Any tips/advice will be helpful. In the meantime I have ordered 2 x 4 gig ram sticks to try and just throw hardware at the issue.

• Getting "boot error" when trying to boot from USB

  I'm wanting to try out Ubuntu, so followed the instructions for how to install Ubuntu onto a USB. I downloaded the .iso file, then the pendrivelinux 3 part process to make the USB bootable. I can see what looks like a full list of files on the USB (including the wubi.exe application and the syslinux folder). When I try to restart the computer with the USB in, I get the Dell start up screen, and then a black screen with "Boot Error" in the top right hand corner. Setup options (default) are to boot from Removable Device, then Hard Disc. USB is brand new, straight out of the packet. Computer: Dell Inspiron 530S BIOS: 1.0.13 OS: Windows Vista Home Edition USB: EMTEC 8Gb, formatted to FAT32 I've tried some of the tips in other help topics (holding down CTRL key while restarting, removing all other USB devices). I tried to reformat the USB to something other than FAT32, but my only other options were NTFS or exFAT (not FAT16 which was suggested in another topic).

I like to learn from videos but most videos I've found on the internet are provided by people who do not follow good practices. My second option is to learn from books but I did not find a good book for starters in PHP! • I have a large number of links on every page, for design reasons I want to keep it but is it hurting my SEO

  The site is http://www.centralsaddlery.co.uk We have other issues which we are tackling in terms of content etc but the question I have is: "Is my main navigation hurting us in SEO?" Its a lot of links and it's on a lot of pages. If so - what is a way to get google to ignore links below the top level. I had thought google would see that the links are hidden by default and only shown on hover but I can't verify this at all. We absolutely want to keep the menu, our customers like it and so do we - we think it is pretty usable as we have a lot of products to look at. • Custom extensible file format for 2d tiled maps

  I have implemented much of my game logic right now, but still create my maps with nasty for-loops on-the-fly to be able to work with something. Now I wanted to move on and to do some research on how to (un)serialize this data. (I do not search for a map editor - I am speaking of the map file itself) For now I am looking for suggestions and resources, how to implement a custom file format for my maps which should provide the following functionality (based on MoSCoW method): Must have Extensibility and backward compatibility Handling of different layers Metadata on whether a tile is solid or can be passed through Special serialization of entities/triggers with associated properties/metadata Could have Some kind of inclusion of the tileset to prevent having scattered files/tilesets I am developing with C++ (using SDL) and targetting only Windows. • How can you become a real programming polyglot?

  I work as a Java programmer, but C and C++ were always my favourite languages during studies. Unfortunatelly I don't have an opportunity to work with them as often as I would like to. As a result I sometimes get realized that I don't remember something quite important (today example: inherited protected members cannot be accessed in derived class constructors). The other example could be Python and Haskell which I enjoy using but don't use everyday. I got an idea to write my own wiki with easy to forget things (e.g. bash tricks & tips) but I find no sense in writing there everything I can forget about coolest programming languages. I know that the best way would be having a side projects (I want to start working on some C/C++ open source project after graduation), but currently I have to write my graduation thesis and work so I merely don't have time to do this. How do you stay sharp in languages that you don't use everyday?

• Handling & processing credit card payments

  I'm working on program that charges customers on a pay as you go per month modal. This means that instead of the customers paying their invoices at the start of the month, they will have to pay at the end of the month. In order to secure the payments I want my customers credit card information stored so that they can be charged automatically at the end of the month. I do not have the resources, time, or risk to handle and store my customers credit card information on my servers and am looking for a third party solution. I'm a tad overwhelmed by all the different options and services that are out there and was wondering if anyone with experience have any recommendations and tips. I'm having difficulty finding services that allow me to to store my customers credit card information and charge them automatically. Most of them seem to offer an invoice styled approach.

• How do you stop yourself from programming?

  Lately I've started earning enough off my software to not have to do consulting to support myself. So I work full time designing and writing my own software products. The problem is that there are no boundaries between my work and my life any more. When I mostly did consulting, I was weary enough of work at the end of the workday to go home and do other things. But now, I sit down to program in the morning, and before I know it it's 11pm and I'm still writing software and not bored or tired at all. I have to force myself to go to sleep. I feel happy and fulfilled, but objectively, I know I need more balance and variety in my life. Any tips or suggestions on how to pull yourself away from the console?

• Screen resolution higher than monitor specs

  Is there any magical or non-magical way to increase screen resolution for my monitor that officially does 1366 x 768? With my graphics card, I could do 1920, and when I actually do that, the image is very "unclean" on the screen... I run Ubuntu 10.10, on an HP Pavilion with a GeForce 315. My monitor is a HD ready Samsung LE32C450... my smaller previous monitor had no problem showing a 1920 resolution, and my obvious mishap was to assume a much bigger screen would support at least this same resolution... Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
