• Live CD won't start with UEFI

  I'm trying to dual boot my Windows 8 machine with Ubuntu 12.04 but I cannot even get to the Live CD under UEFI. I've already set my UEFI boot loader to load from the DVD drive before anything else but it keeps on loading Windows 8 first thing. I've checked that the Ubuntu installer I am using is working by setting the BIOS to legacy boot; under this setting, I can get to the Live CD but it cannot detect Windows 8---something I do not want to happen. Just for the record, my boot order is as follows: ATAPI CDROM: HL-DL-ST DVDRAM GT51N USB CDROM: USB FDD USB HDD HDD: TOSHIBA [SERIAL NUMBER] Network Boot-IPV4: Network Boot-IPV6 Windows Boot Manager Has anyone ran into the same problems as me for UEFI? What am I missing here?

• The Dreaded Startup Repair Loop on Win 7

  For most people, upgrading to Windows 7 has been a relatively painless process.  Not me.  I am in the unlucky 1% or less who had a somewhat less pleasant experience.  First, I cloned my entire onto a larger (and much faster) solid state hard drive, only experiencing minimal problems. Then, I bought the Retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate, took a deep breath and... oh yeah, I almost forgot - BACK UP THE COMPUTER.  The next morning I upgraded to Win 7 and everything seemed fine, until... I rebooted the system, the nice Windows 7 launch graphics come up, it's about to launch and AWWW, are you kidding me?!?!  Back to the BIOS splash screen?  Next comes the sequence of failure - attempt repair - unable to repair - do you want to wipe your hard drive decisions. Because I purchased the retail version, a number is provided where I could call Microsoft Tech support.  When I did, they instructed me to click "Install" from my installation CD, which did not work.  When I tried the "Upgrade" option, it reaches an impasse, telling you that yoiu have a newer version of Win 7, and thus cannot Upgrade.  If you choose "Install" you willl lose everything... files, programs, EVERYTHING.  Or at least this is what it tells you.  I was not willing to take the risk. To make things worse, I had installed a new antivirus software application before I realized my system was unstable (Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security), and this was causing additional problems. One interesting thing, and the only saving grace as it turns out, was that my system WOULD successfully reboot into the OS if I chose to restart it, rather than shut it down.  If I chose to shut down, I would have to go through the loop again until I was given the option to restart. As it turned out, I needed to update my BIOS.  I assumed that since I had updated my BIOS a long time ago to settings that were stable under Windows Vista Ultimate x64, I incorrectly expected Win 7 to adopt the same settings and didn't expect there to be any problems.  WRONG. My BIOS had a setting to halt the boot cycle if various kinds of errors were detected.  Windows Vista didn't care about this, but forget it under Windows 7.  I turned immediately corrected that BIOS setting.  Next, there were the two separate BIOS settings: enable USB mouse and enable USB keyboard.  The only sequence of events that would work were to start my reboot process over from stratch with a hard-wired non-usb keyboard and mouse.  Whent the system booted under these settings, it doesn't detect any errors due to either the mouse or keyboard, and actually booted for the first time in a long while (let me tell ya, that's an amazing experience after fiddling with settings for two entire weekends!) Next step: leave your old mouse and keyboard connected, but also connect your other two devices (mouse, keyboard) that use USB connections.  During the boot cycle, the operating system will not fail due to missing requirements during startup, and it will then pick up the new drivers necessary to use your new hardware. If you think you are in the clear here, you are wrong.  The next VERY IMPORTANT step is to remember to change your settings in the BIOS upon next startup.  Specifically, yoiu will need ot change your BIOS to enable USB mouse and enable USB keyboard input.  If you don't, Windows will detect an incompatibility upon the next startup, and you will be stuck once again in the endless cycle of reboot/Startup Repair/reboot/Startup Repair, without ever reaching a successful boot. Here's the thing - the BIOS and the drivers registered in Win 7 need to match.  If they don't, you're going to lose another weekend worrying and fiddling, all the while wondering if you've permanently damaged your hard drive beyond repair. (Sigh).  In the end, things worked out.  I must note that it is saddening to see how many posts there are out there that recommend just doing a clean install, as if it's the only option.  How many countless poor souls have lost their data, their backups, their pictures and videos, all for nothing other than the fact that the person giving advice just didn't know what to do at that point? My advice to you, try having a look at your BIOS settings first and making sure Win 7 can find your BIOS settings, and also disabling in your BIOS anything that might halt your system boot-up process if it encounters errors.

I did not set a password so I have no idea what it could be.... username: other password: I have tried no password, no luck... I tried ubuntu, no luck Any Ideas why it has a password, and what it might be or how I can set the password?

• If I enable/disable my wireless device, my computer will panic

  Now, I use Debian 6.0.6 instead of Fedora 16/17. But I still sustain the problem of my wireless problem. If I enable/disable my laptop wireless device or my usb wifi adaptor, my laptop will panic. It seems like all the processes stop at that time and I have to restart my laptop directly. P.S. I think I installed the drivers correctly and the linux kernel may have some bugs. For example, when I unplug my usb wifi adaptor or I use this command, ifdown wlan0 I encounter this problem. • Installed Ubuntu using WUBI due to lack of CD Drive

  I have installed 12.04 via WUBI because my computer does not have a CD Drive. Is there any way that I can delete Windows 7 from my computer and use the whole HD for Ubuntu? I ask this question because for one reason or another I cannot boot from a boot-able USB stick (either in Windows or Ubuntu, however the USB port works because I am able to use my cell phone's tethering plan using all the USB ports to connect to the Internet). Edit: Just found out the problem. Eee PC Model 1018p's do not boot from any format other than FAT and FAT16 and not FAT32.

• How do I access an external drive mounted on a machine on my own network?

  I've got one desktop computer Ubuntu 11.04 with an external USB drive mounted on it on the home WRT54L Linux network (192.168.0.2), and when I arrive at home with my laptop, I want to be able to mount the external USB drive from my Ubuntu 11.04 laptop (192.168.0.3) to the desktop, without having to unplug it from the desktop, that is accessing it. Is it possible to send a remote mount command to the desktop usb drive from my laptop? Ideally something that creates a local mountpoint I can just call locally from the programs installed in my laptop, like: username@laptop ~ ./myprograminlaptop /my/file/which/is/actually/on/the/desktop/file.txt

• Ubuntu won't boot on windows starter

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS yesterday from a usb, but it only boots into Windows unless the usb is in, then it boots into the Ubuntu loader where I can choose Ubuntu vs. Windows. What's the problem? I run windows starter on a netbook with 1 gb ram and intel atom processor. I tried to install boot-repair but it won't work either. I follow the instructions for the Terminal and it seems to go right until I try launching it - then it says that it does not know the command boot-repair. I really like Ubuntu, it lets this netbook run smoothly and better than ever before but I don't think I want to boot from a usb every time.

• How do I get the wireless card on a Lenovo S205 working?

  I tried to install 12.04, 13.04, and now 13.10 on the machine and followed all the instructions that made sense that I could find and still have not gotten wifi to work. It keeps it hard blocked for some reason, not sure why and not sure anyone out there either has figured it out because I would have found it on Google. When I boot from the formatted USB drive, I have WiFi and everything working, why doesn't work after the USB drive is removed? What driver is the USB/wubi or whatever using so that I can install it and have things working? I could have used wubi and installed Ubuntu like that, but I want to make this machine a fully dedicated Ubuntu machine. The laptop is a Lenovo S205 in case anyone can help. I really would like to use 12.04 or higher, i don't want to downgrade to an older version of Ubuntu if at all possible.

• Computer crashes on resume from standby almost every time

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Core i5 2500K and ASRock Z68 Pro3-M motherboard (no graphics card, hd is a WD Green 1TB, and cd drive is some cheap lite-on drive). Since installing 12.04, my computer has been freezing after resume, but not every time. When I start to resume, it starts going normally with a blinking cursor on the screen and then sometimes it will continue on to the gnome 3 unlock screen. Most of the time, however, it will blink for a little bit and then the monitor will flip modes and shut off due to no signal. Pressing keys on the keyboard gets no response (num lock light doesn't respond, Ctrl-Alt-F1 fails to drop it into a terminal, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't work) and so I assume the computer is crashed. The worst part is, the logs look entirely normal. • BlueTooth not working on my HP Probook 4720s

  the blue tooth on my ubuntu 11.10 does not work. When i try to ad a device it scans indefinitely and never find anything. Wireless is working perfeclty and with windows 7 it is detected. As i read somewhere , the bluetooth is not listed in the usb devices.   This thing is lovely, very nice bluetooth keyboard that has nice feedback on the keypress, there is no mouse but you can use the stylus or get yourself a bluetooth mouse, me, I've opted for a Microsoft ARC mouse which is a delight to use, the USB doors are a pain to open for the first time if like me you don't have any finger nails. It came as a suprise that the slate shows four processors, Dual Core with multi-threading, I didn't really look at the processor I was more interested in the amount of memory and the SSD; you don't get the full 4GB even with the 64 bit version of Windows 7 installed (which I immediately upgraded to Ultimate through my MSDN subscription). The box is extremely responsive - extremely, it loads Winword in literally a second. I've got office 2010 and onenote 2010 on there now; one problem is that on applying all (43) windows updates since the upgrade the machine is still sat on step 3 of 3 on the start up configuring updates screen after about an hour, you can't turn this machine off without using a paper clip to reset it and as I have just found you need a paper clip :). Installing Windows 7 SP1 was effortless. One of the first things I did on it was to reduce the size of the font, by default its set at 125%, my eye sight is ok :) so I've set that back down. Amazon Kindle for the PC works really well, plenty of text on the screen when viewed portrait, the case it comes with also allows the slate to stand up in various positions - portrait, horizontal - seems stable enough. The wireless works well, seems to have a better signal than my other two laptop machines which is good news. The gadget passed the pose test at work :). I use offline files to keep a copy of all my work stuff locally, I'm not sure what it is, well, its probably my server but whenever I try and sync it runs for a couple of minutes then fails with network name no longer contactable, funnily enough its fine from my big laptop so I can only guess this may be a driver type issue on the EP121 itself - very odd and very annoying. I do a lot of presenting and need to plug into a VGA project because most sites that's all that is offered, the EP121 has a mini-hdmi output which is great except for this scenario, hdmi is digital, vga is analogue, you will struggle to find a cost effective solution, I found HDFury and also a device HP do, however, a better solution appears to be getting a USB graphics adapter for instance the one I've ordered is the ClimaxDigital USB 2.0 to DVI,VGA or HDMI Adaptor which gives everything I need - VGA and DVI output and great resolution as well - ok, so fingers crossed because I'm presenting next Wednesday in Edinburgh and not taking my 300kg lenovo w700 (I'm sure my back just sighed in relief) - it certainly works really well on my LED TV, the install was simple - it just works! One of the several reasons for buying this piece of kit was to use it on my LED TV to remote into my main machine to check stuff whilst sat in my living room, also to watch webcasts and lecture videos in comfort away from my office, because of the wireless speed and limitation I'm opting for a USB network adapter from Belkin - that will also allow me to take advantage of my home gigabit network, there are only 2 usb ports on the slate so I'm going to knock up a hub so connecting it in is straight forward and simple, I'm also going to purchase a second power supply so I don't have to faff about with that either.I now have the developer x64 edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, yes everything :) - about 16GB left to play with on the machine now but that will be fine, I'll put AdventureWorks on there so I can play and demo stuff which is all I'm after from this, my development machine is significantly more powerful and meets my storage needs too.Travel test this weekend and next week, I'm in Dundee for my final exam for the masters degree.

  I am using a Dell xps l702x and I am using ubuntu 10.04 because I need to use f77 (don't ask) and I wasn't able to get it working on later versions of ubuntu. I cannot use the wifi at all. I have tried to fix it and have had limited success (changed the output from rfkill list all from Hard blocked: yes, to hard blocked: no). When I restart Xorg everything is fine again and the problem doesn't occur until next reboot. I tried to upgrade the kernel from stock 2.6.32 to 2.6.39 from unstable repository but that didn't help. Booting with irqpoll option only seems to prolong the initial time period after which the problem occurs. I'm using latest NVIDIA drivers and Realtek firmware from firmware-realtek package. I have two GTX 560Ti that run in SLI. Disabling SLI or taking out one card completely doesn't solve the problem either. • How can I connect to Android with ADB over TCP?

  I am attempting to debug an application on a Motorola Droid but I am having some difficulty connecting to the device via USB. My development server is a Windows 7 64bit VM running in HyperV and so I cannot connect directly via USB in the guest or from the host. I installed a couple of different USB over TCP solutions but the connection appears to have issues since the adb monitor reports "devicemonitor failed to start monitoring" repeatedly. I was wondering if there is a way to connect directly from the client on the development machine to the daemon on the device using the network instead of the usb connection or possibly other viable options?

• Git repos over multiple machines - backups and keeping in sync

  I'm new to git so please feel free to RTFM me... I have multiple development sites (none of which can communicate via a network with each other) and am working on a few projects (with a few people) at any one time. What I would ideally have is at each site a centralized repository that can be pulled from but development would occur in our own (personal) repos. Then I would like to be able to sync across the centralized repos (via USB key for example). I want a centralized repo at each location as (1) I'm new to git and do break my (personal) local repo by playing around and (2) some projects get put on hold so I want to be able to free up disk space by deleting them. This is the "backup" part of my question. I was also hoping to be able to use 'git clone --bare' for my centralized repos (and the USB key repos to?) as we don't need the full checkout, just the git benefits. However I can't seem to get a bare repo to work as repo I can push from. I've used 'git remote' to set up an remote origin (similar to http://toolmantim.com/thoughts/setting_up_a_new_remote_git_repository) but I can't get 'git push' to work - it seems I need a checked-out repo. . Does anyone else use this sort of repo/development structure or is there something fundamental about git usage that I'm missing? . A solution that I thought about that might not work - If I had a 'git clone --bare' at each site and then use a git repo on my removable media which has remotes set up for each site then I could ('pull') sync my USB key with each repo. But then can I update the site repo from my USB key? Could I push from USB?

• Drivers for NVIDIA 520M not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am aware that this is nominally a duplicate question, however I've read the other questions and haven't been able to resolve my problem after many hours and attempts, so please don't delete it. Additionally, it seems like many answers to the other questions are specifically dependent on certain situations. My situation being different from the others I found represented, here's my question. Until last night, I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed with Wubi, and it ran ok, though slowly and with occasional hangs. So I partitioned the drive and installed 12.04 in its own partition. Now when I start it, I am stuck using 2D. I believe this is an NVIDIA bug. My NVIDIA card is a GT 520M and my machine has Optimus. Additional Drivers only displays my wireless driver. Going to System Settings Details Graphics shows Driver:Unknown, Experience:Standard. I downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA website, and ran the installer with no errors, except that the "distribution-provided pre-install script failed". After rebooting, my screen was stuck at 640X480, which was fixed by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf However, I still was stuck in 2D, and nothing else had changed either. A thread suggested something called Bumblebee. I tried that, and when I ran optirun firefoxI got a frozen blank screen. Following another suggestion, I checked the BIOS to try and disable Optimus. I found and ran myriad other commands to try and fix the problem and nothing changed. Now I have just done a clean re-install of Ubuntu. From there, I: Installed all the updates Downloaded the NVIDIA driver Installed it Got screen stuck at 640X480, fixed in xorg.conf. To recap the problem: I can't get the NVIDIA drivers working I am stuck using 2D I'm an idiot I think if the first one is solved, the solution to the second will naturally follow. If you need me to provide any other information, I'd be happy to.   As we've been having some problems with sporadic packet loss, I've been preparing a replacement router (also an SSG5) for our current Juniper SSG5. I've setup the new SSG5 identically to the old one. We have a /29 IP range with a single IP setup as a MIP map to a server and two others being used for VIP maps. Each VIP/MIP is accompanied by relevant policies. Long story short - we tried connected the new SSG5 and some things were not working as they should. No problem, I just reconnected the old one. However, some things are still broken, even when I reconnected the old one. I fear I may have inadvertently changed some settings while browsing through old settings in my attempt to reconfigure the new SSG5 unit. All inbound traffic seems to work as expected. However, the 192.168.2.202 server can't initiate any outbound connections. It works perfectly on the local network, but any pings or DNS lookups to external IP's fail. The MIP & VIP map to it works perfectly - I can access it through HTTP and RDP without issues. Any tips on what to debug, or where I've messed up my config? • Share 3G connection over WiFi-LAN network

  This is how I have established network between my PC and my laptop at home (being novice in networking, it took me few days to achieve the feat). And it is working perfectly. I can easily share files between them. Laptop IP Address: 192.168.1.4 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 Desktop IP Address: 192.168.1.5 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 ASUS RT-N10+ Router IP Address: 192.168.1.4 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.2 I have connected the Desktop PC to the router using a LAN cable, and laptop to router over WiFi. Both, PC and laptop are running on Windows 7 OS, are on same HomeGroup, have same username / password. Also, I have connected the Ethernet cable to LAN port 1 of the router. Now, what I want is use connect to Internet using a 3G USB modem on one device and share it over the network on the other. I tried Huawei and Micromax 3G USB modem. Both obtain a new IP address whenever I connect to Internet (means they have dynamic IPs). Rest, both have Subnet Mask as 255.255.255.255 and Default Gateway as 0.0.0.0. In that case, I cannot directly share Internet from the modem. Preferred DNS is blank for now in both, laptop and PC. What I am planning to do is to connect to Internet on laptop using the 3G modem and share the Internet connection over laptop's Wi-Fi (as hotspot) using Connectify, which I have done already. That, I suppose, will broadcast a static IP to connect to. Now what I can't figure out is that what changes should I make to the network settings of the router and the PC so that PC connects to the Internet broadcast by Connectify? Is that possible on the first hand? Please note that I am trying to implement the network without spending anything extra (for purchasing as USB WiFi adapter for PC, of course, which could have made the life lot easier for me).
