• IE8 Windows 7 (64bit) security certificate problem

  Hi, We have just received some new computers for use in the office (Dell Vostro). They seem to work fine in the main. When we use IE8 to go to some web pages such as yahoo mail it tells us: “There is a problem with this websites security certificate” If we have a look at the details it says: “This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority” This however works correctly in Firefox. I don't understand why I should get such an error message, should this not just work? I don't think its anything to do with the certificate itself as this is happening on www.yahoo.co.uk and other commercial (amazon I think?) sites. I think there is something off with the PCs setup. The PC has Windows 7 (64 bit) and Norton Internet Security installed. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks

• Digital Blue Digital Movie Creator 3.0 driver

  I'm having a complete 'mare of a time trying to use my schools Digital Blue cameras. We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do! • Instant database snapshot

  My product uses oracle 9 database in its backend. every week the new release of the product is launched which will want to fire some DML, DDL queries to the database. I usually test the product release in a dummy database before applying it in the main database. I create a database dump using exp command, then import them into dummy database using imp. then i test the product in the dummy database and checks if there are any errors. This exp and imp takes about 3 hours to complete. Is there any alternative as : instant snapshot of the live database (which will be independent of the live one)? or is there any option to keep dummydatabase in sync with the originl database always. Yhis can be done by making the product firing DML&DDL queries to both the databases.. but this will be a HUGE performance problem.. how can i overcome this?

• Is there a Windows 7 add-on that will put the PID in the title bar of a window?

  Occasionally I run many instances of something, like Chrome or Visual Studio. Rarely, but often enough to bug me, one of them gets hosed and starts to consume 100% CPU. I can fire up the task manager to see which process is using 100%, but if it just says chrome.exe or devenv.exe, I don't know which window is the culprit. I'd like to know before terminating the process, so I can activate the app and shut it down cleanly. The best I've found so far is to use Process Explorer's feature where I can right click a process and say "bring to front". But I am curious as to whether there is an app that will put the PID(s) right in the title bar of the window so I can tell which window matches the process. I am using Windows 7 64-bit.

• Looking for FTP server that allows user management from database

  I'm planning a server application that will handle files uploaded via FTP. The application must parse text documents that it receives and write them to a database (most likely a document-oriented database like Mongo). And the application must also relay all large binary files it receives to Amazon S3 for storage and hosting. I'd like to manage all aspects of the FTP server programmatically. For example, when a user registers via a web page the application should be able to create the user account in the database and provision a directory on the server for receiving files. I'm using a Linux server but am otherwise open to considering any programming language or framework. I experimented with VSFTPD but didn't like the way the application relies on config files and the creation of users and directories via the command line. Can someone please recommend what server framework I should consider? I'm a little biased toward solutions that leverage Javascript/Nodejs or Python. However, I'm open to anything that can run on a Linux box.

  My IIS apppool user is trying to create a folder but fails. How do I find out which User it is? Let's say I don't know much about IIS7 but need to trace whatever is happening through tools. Place of crime is WinSrv2008 with IIS7. So I fire up Sysinternals/ProcessMonitor to find out what is happening. I find Access denied on a folder just as I suspected. But which user? I add the User column to the output and it says IIS Apppool\Defaultapppool in capitals. Well... that isn't a user is it? If I go to IIS and its Apppools and Advanced settings and Process model and Identity I can see clues about which user it is but that is only because I know IIS. What if it had been Apache or LightHttpd or whatever? How do I see the user to give the appropriate rights to?

  Hi, I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• Are there any Pandora/Slacker like applications to create stations/play lists from personal mp3 library?

  I'm interested in having playlists created automatically much in the same way that Pandora and Slacker Radio "create" radio channels. I understand that iTunes has the Genius feature, but this requires that the files have been encoded with iTunes, which is not the case with my music, among other reasons I'm not considering iTunes. I'm running an Windows environment, but would consider Linux options as it would give me a reason to learn more about Linux. In the end the music files and play lists will end up on my Android phone and tablets. Working with Amazon's Cloud Player would be nice, but not required.

• IIS 6.0 FTP Folder Permissions

  I have a IIS Ftp website setup like so \ftp\users\domain\public\public Software that runs on clients computers logs into the FTP by specifying domain\public and moving to public, it then uploads or downloads files / folders into that area. I wan't to restrict the permissions on \ftp\users\domain\public so that nothing / noone can write files or folders here, only to \ftp\users\domain\public\public. I setup the NTFS permissions of the folder to remove domain\users, public and server\users to not have modify right, yet I can still upload / modify files. I have disabled inheritance from the parent folder of \ftp\users\domain\public as well. Any ideas on what I'm missing here? P.S I know this is a stupid setup and makes no sense, it's some bizarre legacy application that I need to migrate to a safer environment until it can be replaced, then I'm going to light it on fire -.- and dance around it.

• Digital audio input on Macbook?

  I have: a Macbook (not Pro), don't know the exact model but it's a Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz and probably what Wikipedia calls the "Late 2006" or "Mid 2007" model a DVD player, region-free, that has "Coax and TosLink optical digital audio outputs" I want to make an MP3 of the audio track of some DVDs (for learning a new language), and I can't use the Macbook's built-in DVD drive because it's a different region (ugh!). I'm sure I can connect the DVD player to the Macbook with an analog audio cable. However, if it's possible I'd prefer to keep the signal digital. I'm not even positive if my old Macbook has digital audio in, and if so what I need to connect to it. (I've done plenty of home audio geeking, but always in analog!) Will a "Toslink cable" plus a "Toslink Female to Mini-Plug Male Adapter" (found on Amazon) let me connect my things together? It looks like the pieces will fit but I'd like to hear someone confidently knowledgeable on the matter before I buy something. Thanks!

• What is the best way to configure Apache or AWS to support a Rails multi tenancy application that allows each customer to have their own domain name?

  I'm building a Rails 3 SaaS site that allows for multi-tenancy. When a customer signs up they put in their own domain name, e.g. example.com. I need example.com to point to my SaaS application and serve them their content. My questions are as follows: Do I need to create an Apache vhost for each customer using their own domain? Is there an easier way with CNAME's to just have the customer point to the IP address of my server(s) that then forwards the request onto my application through some catch all vhost? Would I be able to create the CNAME record for the customer so they don't have to do any setup? Would this be a case better suited to Amazon Web Services? Any help or explanation or corrections on my understanding of dns would be appreciated. I'm a developer so the server ops portion of this is a bit cloudy.

• How to setup a simple self-hosted dynamic DNS server

  I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server? Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options? I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

• USB microphone very quiet in Windows 7 64bit [migrated]

  My microphone input is very quiet. I record my voice and the recording comes out very faint. I can barely see the level indicator move when I'm 4 inches away, only when I'm 0.5 inches away does it pick up well enough.   I need to compare two binary files and get output in form for every different byte. So if file1.bin is 00 90 00 11 in binary form and file2.bin is 00 91 00 10 I want to get something like 00000001 90 91 00000003 11 10 what is the easiest way to accomplish the goal? Standard tool? Some 3rd party tool? inb4: cmp -l should be killed with fire,it uses decimal system for offsets and octal for bytes. "Consistency for losers" must be cmp's motto.

• Does stunnel prevent non ssl traffic to "the" specified port?

  So say I have an arbitrary tcp port 12345 and it's non ssl and I want to put stunnel to secure traffic to it. When stunnel is in front of it does it mean that this port is now tls/ssl only? Or can you still connect to it unencrypted? Basically I want to make sure that this port can only be accessed through ssl/tls and stunel and no other way. Clarification I want to make sure only stunnel port is open. Which is answered in the comments that the unsecured port should be fire-walled but preferably bound to localhost.

  I am doing log shipping between two Amazon EC2 instances running Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition. Both the instances are in the same domain and I can access the shared folders between the instances. The SQL server service account, agent service account are all running under a domain account. When I activate log shipping (with stand by mode restore in secondary server), the initial backup gets restored on the secondary. • Visual Studio 2008 Debugger really slow with SSD

  Hey guys, my setup is a laptop with Win 7 64bit, VS2008 SP1 on an intel x25-m 4gb RAM with page file turned off (no need) and 2.2 core duo What happens is weird: When i build my project and attach the debugger the symbols load REALLY slowly... like 1 every 5 secs Sometimes the symbols will fail to load at all. This is driving me crazy as this was a freshly installed win 7 box with default VS installation, working on ASP.net web applications... i've never had to use symbol servers or any of that jazz so i'm quite frustrated. With this SSD it should breath fire as it does with loading and doing everything else. Am i missing something?

• how can I effect DNS Caching on PHP/Memcache application

  In a very high loaded Ubuntu/PHP web server I found that the PHP line: $memcache-connect("int-aws_ec2.memcached.myapp.net",11211); sometimes takes ~5 secs. Replacing the url with the ip address decreases the server load from ~20 to 0 My question is - where are the settings that effect the DNS caching for this? Is it in the server level or the memcache library ? How can I change it ? Additional info: Ubuntu 10.04 lucid PHP: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Amazon EC2 Even more info per Celada's comment: The DNS handling for the memcache server is done by scalr (the platform I use to manage the cloud resources). They have a client located on the instances and their own DNS servers. /etc/nsswitch.conf - hosts: files dns /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 172.16.0.23 domain ec2.internal search ec2.internal The domain is not in hosts.conf To check if I run nscd I used /etc/init.d/nscd stop and received 'no such file' so i guess I dont run nscd.   Hi, I'm brand new to Apache so this might be a stupid question. I've been trying to follow a few basic tutorials explaining how to get Apache up and running (on ubuntu, running on Amazon). I've mostly come up blank, because all the tutorials told me to configure httpd.conf (to add DocumentRoot, etc.). I've now stumbled across one tutorial that told me to add site configurations to the sites-available directory (under /etc/apache), and then symlink to it from sites-enabled. Configuring this way seems to work. But now I'm confused - how am I supposed to configure Apache? Most tutorials still seem to say that I should be using httpd.conf. Which one should I be using? What's the difference? Why are all the tutorials "wrong" (if they are)? Thanks!

They can't see my access point. What I need is a gizmo that connects over-the-air to my access point in building A, talks WPA2, and converts the packets to and from a wired Ethernet port. Netgear-access-point in building A      (WPA2 WiFi) Wireless bridge device          <-- Looking for this.      (Cat5 ethernet) My devices in building B. I've looked for devices on Amazon, but the descriptions are infuriatingly unclear. It says it supports WPA2, but does it support it as a client? Grrr... Any recommendations please?

This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!
