• Entity Framework and consuming a WCF service

  I'm getting data where the database is hidden behind a WCF service. Is it possible to use Entity Framework in a scenario where I have custom objects coming from a web service? (No access to the external database, and no current plans for insert/update/delete logic) Starting with an empty EF model and adding an entity I get this error on compile: No mapping specified for instances of the EntitySet and AssociationSet in the EntityContainer .. Is it possible to make an entity this way, and fill it with data received from an object? (In this case a WCF, but could also be a predefined model class/xml data) If the web service retured a Customer object I could do something like this with a dataset: Make an unbound table and do a loop through the customer properties adding them to a temp row, add it with tbl_Customer.Addtbl_CustomerRow(customerRow) to get my view filled. thanks, nakori

  Hi guys, Here is my scenario. When anonymous user visits site collection's default site, custom login form panel is shown. This form is a webUserControl(.ascx file) that is embeded into page as webpart. Then user enters username and password. When submit button has been clicked, authentication will be handled by code behind of custom login form panel. Here is my question. How can I call SharePoint's authentication method with the username and password that is entered by user. Simply, I want users to login through my custom login form panel because default windows authentication window is looking really bad.

• "port forwarding": redirect calls to webservice at port 8081 to port 80

  Hi, a colleague of mine wrote a webservice that runs on port 8081 of our Windows 2008 Server. He uses the class ServiceHost, afaik this means its a standalone host (no IIS or ASP involvement). Note: I'm new into WCF ;) Now there are some issues with clients behind a firewall blocking the requests to remote port 8081 of our server (where the webservice runs). The easiest solution would be: run the webservice host at port 80 ... But: there is also a Apache 2.2 webserver running on the Windows Server, hosting some websites. By default it runs on port 80. My solution after some researching: use a virtual host to route requests to a virtual host (lets say http://webservice.[hostname]:80) to the webservice host (http://[hostname]:8081). Is this a good idea? Can Apache handle forwards to standalone webservice hosts? It would be nice if someone could lead me on to the right track :) Best regards, Niels

  I have come to a conclusion or realization that perhaps many developers I know including myself have a fanatical fascination with reading as many programming and technology blogs or listening to podcasts as humanly possible. I sometimes wonder if this time would be much better spent in actual coding and doing, rather than the incessant thinking and perhaps wondering what the "other guy" is doing? With a very large signal to noise ratio in most blogs and podcasts, is there real benefit in maintaining a huge and constant blog role.. or is this some primal fear or instinct to keep up the pace unless being left behind? Can they simply be relegated to Google search and just-in-time learning? • Silverlight DataGrid refresh problem

  Hi, I have encountered a problem when I refresh the observable collection behind my Silverlight DataGrid (the DataGrid binds to a PagedCollectionView with an ObservableCollection as source). When I clear the observable collection and add the new items to the collection the DataGrid repositions to the top. I want the DataGrid to keep the scroll position. This seems to somewhat happen if I remove the items in the collection one-by-one with the RemoveAt mehtod and the add the new items one-by-one. But why is there this difference between removing all the items at once with the Clear method and removing the items one-by-one with the RemoveAt method? Best Regards, Jesper

  I have a half dozen sites on my server and I would like to get some info from IIS7 to display in the footer of each page (as long as you are an admin of course). I am going through the ServerObject and found Sites but am not finding anything obvious for "this site". What should I do to get at the information for the exact site in IIS7 that the page is running on? • Ruby GUI (non-complex layouts)

  I've done quite a bit of research on Ruby GUI design, and it appears to be the one area where Ruby tends to be behind the curve. I've explored the options of MonkeyBars, wxRuby, fxRuby, Shoes, etc. and was just wanted to get some input from the Ruby community. While they're definitely usable, the development on each seems to have fallen off. There is not a great deal of useful documentation or user bases that I could find on any (minus the fxRuby book). I'm just looking to make a simple GUI, so I don't really want to spend hundreds of hours learning the intricacies of the more complex tools or attempt to use something that is no longer even being developed (Shoes is the type of application I'm looking for, but it's extremely buggy and not being actively developed.) Out of all of the options, which would you guys recommend as being the quickest to pick up and that still has some sort of development base? Thanks!

I have no experience with server-side caching, and my (possibly incompetent) google searches aren't returning anything basic enough to get me started.   A security review was done against one of our ASP.net applications and returned in the test results was a SQL Injection Exposures considered to be a high risk item. The test that was performed passed a SQL statement as the value of the __EVENTTARGET and the __EVENTARGUMENT. I am wondering since these 2 values are ASP.net auto-generated hidden fields used for the Auto-Postback feature of the framework and hold information specific to the controls initiating the postback, is there really the potential for SQL injection if you are never manually calling and or pulling values out of these parameters in your code behind?

  1.Here I am having a grid within a parent grid and there is a link button within the nested grid. 2.For the link button I need to use the item command event of the nested grid or I can use the item command of parent grid as well. 3.The issue is when I click on the link button within nested grid then item command event doesn’t get fired for the nestedgrid.But in case of parent grid its working fine. 4.I have tried handlers and item created event also to use handlers in code behind or in aspx.But nothing helped in getting me item command event hit for the nested grid. 5.Previously in case of repeaters there was one item command which was handling all the grids. I have tried different item command event for child and parent but it also didn’t work.

  Hello, I have a gridview control that has on onclick event bound to every cell. Once a user clicks on a cell it directs them to a booking confirmation page and passes 3 url variables. This booking page is behind a aspnet membership and thus if the user is not logged in they are served the login page. The login page has a redirect to https connection in the onload event using the IsSecure property. The issue is once the user logs in, then is returned to the booking confirmation page I lose 2 of the url vars. If I remove the https redirect, everything works fine, but the user logs on on a http connection, which is not cool. Appreciate and help thanks Reuben

  In a linux application I'm using pipes to pass information between threads. The idea behind using pipes is that I can wait for multiple pipes at once using poll(2). That works well in practice, and my threads are sleeping most of the time and only wake up if there is something to do for them. On the user-space the pipes look just like two file-handles. Now I wonder wonder how much resources such a pipes use on the OS side. Btw: In my application I only send single bytes every now and then. Think about my pipes as simple message queues that allow me to wake-up receiving threads, tell them to send some status-data or to terminate.

• Authenticating from a "child" application via CAS

  I have a portal application that loads external content (widgets) via an iframe. Users login to CAS via the portal itself. There are a few portal APIs, though, that need to be called from that external content. What information do I have to pass from the portal to the widgets that the widgets can use to make these calls without being rejected by CAS? UPDATE The more I investigate, the more I think that my question boils down to how CAS actually does what it's supposed to do. In other words, how can I go from one site where I've authenticated to another and tell it that I've already done the authentication thing. • Why do I lose my javascript from the browser cache after a full page postback?

  Hi, I have an external javascript file which I include to my page on the code behind (as seen below). My problem is, when I my page makes a postback (not partial one), I check the loaded scripts by using FireBug, and I cannot see the javascript file in the list after the post back. I asusmed once it is included to page on the first load, browser will be caching it so that I do not need to re-include it. What am I doing wrong?   Hi, I have a problem configuring apache tomcat ProxyPass directive for two applications that have two different Contaxt Pathes in tomcat. The tomcat is running behind an apache and I use the apache to proxy path the requests to tomcat. In apache I want to access both application via a hostname instead of a context path. Scenario: tomcat https://domain:8443/app1 https://domain:8443/app2 in tomcat the applications have the context path app1 and app2 in apache I want to enable both application as follow: https://app1.host/ https://app2.host/ In apache I have created a configuration for each domain: ProxyPass / https://localhost:8443/app1 ProxyPassReverse / https://localhost:/8443/app1 The strange thing is app1 is only available through apache using the context path: https://app1.host/app1 Is it possible to realize such a setup with apache ProxyPass module? • Is this the correct way of speaking to a "Content Manager" Class?

  I am creating a silverlight site. I am currently breaking out my ideas into pieces of functionality. One of the idea's I have is the concept of a content manager. This is essentially a UI control with 4 regions. Top, Bottom, Right & Left. I also have a collection of objects that are considered "Menu Items". These are controls that function as a way to navigate around, similar to links. The idea I have is to implement an IMenuItem interface. Among the standard pieces of information (Text, PageReference, etc) I was also going to hold a reference to the content manager. My idea behind this thinking is that I can pass the PageReference to a property on the ContentManager and then call a method which knows how to update the content manager accordingly. Is this the best way of implementing this or is their some sort of pattern for it?

But the problem is, the overlay view should be transparent so that the wheel behind it is visible. But the other application somehow does it even though the selection bar is not transparent. • Adding a subview to UITableCellView

  I want to add a subview to my UITableCellView subclass. However, non of the provided views in the class seem to be able to do exactly what I was looking for. I basically want to add my own background view, filling the whole cell. However, if I replace the backgroundView, the style from the grouped table view layout isn't displayed anymore. If I add a subview to backgroundView, the subview is not shown at all. If I add a subview to the contentView, I can't draw behind the accessory icon. What am I missing?

• Invalid UTF-8 for Postgres, Perl thinks they're ok

  I'm running perl 5.10.0 and Postgres 8.4.3, and strings into a database, which is behind a DBIx::Class. These strings should be in UTF-8, and therefore my database is running in UTF-8. Unfortunatly some of these strings are bad, containing malformed UTF-8, so when I run it I'm getting an exception DBI Exception: DBD::Pg::st execute failed: ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xb5 I thought that I could simply ignore the invalid ones, and worry about the malformed UTF-8 later, so using this code, it should flag & ignore the bad titles. if(not utf8::valid($title)){ $title="Invalid UTF-8"; } $data->title($title); $data->update(); However perl seems to think that the strings are valid, but it still throws the exceptions. How can I get perl to detect the bad UTF-8?
