• iPhone connect to MySQL database on local network computer

  I'm a bit of a noob to iPhone programming and I've read up on using PHP as the connection between an iPhone app and a remotely hosted MySQL database, but what I need to do is to connect directly to a MySQL database running on a local machine in my office. The machine is behind the same gateway and has an ip address similar to 192.169.x.x. Is that possible without PHP in the middle or anything else for that matter? Thanks in advance. • OpenGL - Frustum not culling polygons beyond far plane

  I have implemented frustum culling and am checking the bounding box for its intersection with the frustum planes. I added the ability to pause frustum updates which lets me see if the frustum culling has been working correctly. When I turn around after I have paused it, nothing renders behind me and to the left and right side, they taper off as well just as you would expect. Beyond the clip distance (far plane), they still render and I am not sure whether it is a problem with my frustum updating or bounding box checking code or I am using the wrong matrix or what. As I put the distance in the projection matrix at 3000.0f, it still says that bounding boxes well past that are still in the frustum, which isn't the case. Here is where I create my modelview matrix: projectionMatrix = glm::perspective(newFOV, 4.0f / 3.0f, 0.1f, 3000.0f); viewMatrix = glm::mat4(1.0); viewMatrix = glm::scale(viewMatrix, glm::vec3(1.0, 1.0, -1.0)); viewMatrix = glm::rotate(viewMatrix, anglePitch, glm::vec3(1.0, 0.0, 0.0)); viewMatrix = glm::rotate(viewMatrix, angleYaw, glm::vec3(0.0, 1.0, 0.0)); viewMatrix = glm::translate(viewMatrix, glm::vec3(-x, -y, -z)); modelViewProjectiomMatrix = projectionMatrix * viewMatrix; The reason I scale it by -1 in the Z direction is because the levels were designed to be rendered with DirectX so I reverse the Z direction.   I'm trying to open local file from Silverlight. I try Window.Navigate("c:\test.pdf", "_blank") and invoking JavaScript like this: window.open("c:\test.pdf", "_blank") Both give "Access is denied". However it works in plain HTML when I do <input type="button" value="test" onclick="window.open('c:\test.pdf', '_blank')" /> Is it Silverlight security restriction? Can I open a local file in a browser from Silverlight application? The reason behind this is that users store local paths and want to open those files from the app.

• jQuery UI Datepicker on a qTip

  I am trying to display a qTip containing a jQuery UI datepicker control (the version bundled with jQuery UI). However the datepicker's calendar opens behind the qTip. I tried manually setting the calendar's z-order from firebug, which does allow the calendar to open in front of the qTip. However, in this case clicking on the calendar has the effect of closing the qTip as (I assume) it is part of the page's content. I am still working through this but wanted to ask - has anyone run into this problem before? Any possible workarounds to get the datepicker to work?

• Programmatic use of ARP

  I have a need for some C or C++ code, compilable under Linux, to be able to take a list of IP addresses of some arbitrary number of remote hosts machines and obtain a ethernet MAC address for each one. These host machines may be on the same subnet or they could be on a different subnet behind a router. Its OK if the MAC address of some or all of the remote hosts is the address of the interface on the router. Ultimately, I want to hand off the IP address and MAC address to an FPGA who will use these pieces of information to format and send UDP/IP packets over ethernet to the hosts. Obviously, the FPGA will also be given its own MAC address and IP address to fill in the source MAC and source IP addresses in the packets. Is there some code I can be pointed to that can create and broadcast ARP packets to these remote machines and receive back the ARP response packets such that the destination MAC addresses can be extracted?

• ASP.NET 3.5 Web Site stopped importing System namespace by default

  I have a VB Web Site project that has recently (and mysteriously) stopped importing the "System" namespace by default. I'm having to either place a "Imports System" line at the top of each code behind, or preface everything with "System", which is fairly annoying, not to mention redundant. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the System namespace back to being imported by default. I've already checked to see that WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\web.config contains the <add namespace="System"/> line--it does. That was my best lead. I'm tearing my hair out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Fastest sort of fixed length 6 int array

  Answering to another StackOverflow question (this one) I stumbled upon an interresting sub-problem. What is the fastest way to sort an array of 6 ints ? As the question is very low level (will be executed by a GPU): we can't assume libraries are available (and the call itself has it's cost), only plain C to avoid emptying instruction pipeline (that has a very high cost) we should probably minimize branches, jumps, and every other kind of control flow breaking (like those hidden behind sequence points in && or ||). room is constrained and minimizing registers and memory use is an issue, ideally in place sort is probably best. Really this question is a kind of Golf where the goal is not to minimize source length but execution speed. I call it 'Zening` code as used in the title of the book Zen of Code optimization by Michael Abrash and it's sequels.

• Custom Silverlight button with <Path> content and visual states

  I would like to create a button control that has a Path element as its content--an IconButton if you will. This button should fulfill two conditions: 1. The Path element's stroke and fill colors should be available for manipulation by the VisualStateManager. 2. The Path element's data string (which defines it's shape) can be set in code or in XAML, so that I can create several such buttons without creating a new custom control for each. The only way I can see to do it would involve no XAML whatsoever. That is, setting all the visual states and animations in the code behind, plus generating the Geometry objects point by point (and not being able to use the convenient Data string property on the Path element). Is there a simpler way to do this?

• Update frequency for dynamic favicons

  I wanted to learn how to dynamically update the favicon using the Google Chrome browser and I've noticed that the browser seems to throttle how often you can update the favicon per second and that sort of makes things look sloppy. The test page I've made for this is: http://staticadmin.com/countdown.html Which is simply a scrolling message displaying the results of a countdown. I added an input field to tweak how many pixels per second are moved by the script and I've eyeballed the max to be about 5 frames per second smoothly in Google Chrome and I have not tested it in any other browsers. My question is what is the maximum frequency, are there any ways to change, is there a particular reason behind it? NOTE: I've also noticed that this value changes based on window focus as well. It seems to drop to about 1 update per second when the browser's window isn't in focus and returns to "max" when you return.

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. Various advantages are often cited: Speed of development Forces separation between presentation and logic Better integration between coders and designers UI changes don't require re-compilation Also, are there any downsides? A few potential areas of concern spring to mind: Execution speed Memory usage Added complexity Are there any other considerations that should be taken into account?

• problems with user control page

  I am starting to give up troubleshooting this issue I had... I had an .ascx page and had the following user control in it: <td> <Club:DatePicker ID="dp1" runat="server" /> </td> however in my code behind when I tried to write methods: public System.DateTime startDateTime { get { return dp1.SelectedDate.Add(tp1.SelectedTime.TimeOfDay); } set { dp1.SelectedDate = value; tp1.SelectedTime = value; } } It can't reference dp1(dp1 is underlined in red) as well as tp1... why is this?? I've tried to convert the solution to a web application and yet it doesn't work. • How to set a control ID in ListView Template dynamically?

  A have a ListView that is rendered with multiple items. Now I want to toggle some HTML attributes with JQuery. Therefore it would be best to have access to these elements via an unique ID. But trying to create a "dynamic" and therefore unique ID by <tr runat="server" ID='<%# this.GetUniqueID() %>'> </tr> results in an error that tells me that the ID needs to be simple and cannot be set by a call to a method. I know that I can dynamically create controls in the code-behind and set the ID there. But in this case, I'd rather like to let the content be rendered by the ListView itself. That brings me to the conclusion that the idea of setting a dynically ID in the Template is totally wrong. How can I achieve the desired behaviour?

• What is the best way to bind a repeater to an AJAX response?

  I am trying to bind a repeater after an AJAX response. Step 1 : Make an Ajax call to the fucntion in the code behind: Step 2 : Do some business logic and finally bind the data to the repeater Step 3 : Get the response back from the codebehind to the Ajax call Step 4 : Once we get the response back what is the right way to strip out extra HTML for example the head and body tags etc. One way is to put a "breaker" logic. for example : <html><body> #breaker REPEATER control HERE #breaker </html></body> and once I get the response back I use a JS function to find anything between the #breaker tags and strip out anything outside and I should get the required HTML response of only the repeated items. Is this the only / Best way to achieve this kind of functionality?

  Hey, I'm trying to create a game similar to this (Note:When you click 'play', there are SFX in the game which you can't seem to turn off, so you may want to check volume). In particular, I'm interested in knowing how the 'infinite' landscape is generated. Are there any tutorials/articles describing this? I came across procedural generation, but I'm not quite sure what topics I should be looking for (or if it's even procedural generation).   Hi, I just started practicing TDD in my projects. I'm developing a project now using php/zend/mysql and phpunit/dbunit for testing. I'm just a bit distracted on the idea of encapsulation and the test driven approach. My idea behind encapsulation is to hide access to several object functionalities. To make it more clear, private and protected functions are not directly testable(unless you will create a public function to call it). So I end up converting some private and protected functions to public functions just to be able to test them. I'm really violating the principles of encapsulation to give way to micro function testability. Is this the correct way of doing it?

In VS2008, I placed these files in the App_Code folder and intellisense worked fine. What can I do? Is there a specific folder I need to put these files in to get intellisense?

By enabling translucent system bars, your layout will fill the area behind the system bars, so you must also enable [fitsSystemWindows][4] for the portion of your layout that should not be covered by the system bars. My only concern is that I would like to use an ActionBar which sounds the opposite of what Google wants (both theme have NoActionBar: Theme.Holo.NoActionBar.TranslucentDecor Theme.Holo.Light.NoActionBar.TranslucentDecor As I don't plan to use some hacks or tricks to make it work, I just wanted to know if there was some correct way to achieve this or if this would be against Google guidelines.

  I have been working on many applications which run as windows service or scheduled tasks. Now, i want to make sure that these applications will be fault tolerant and reliable. For example; i have a service that runs every hour. if the service crashes while its operating or running, i d like the application to run again for the same period, to avoid data loss. moreover, i d like the program to report the error with details. My goal is to avoid data loss and not falling behind for running the program. I have built a class library that a user can import into a project. Library is supposed to keep information of running instance of the program, ie. program reads and writes information of running interval, running status etc. This data is stored in a database. I was curious, if there are some best practices to make the scheduled tasks/ windows services fault tolerant and reliable.

• Web/HTML: how do referrer work technically?

  I don't understand how comes webserver and trackers like Google Analytics are able to track referrals. Is it part of HTTP? Is it some (un)specified behavior of the browsers? Apparently everytime you click on a link on a webpage, the original webpage is passed along the request. What is the exact mechanism behind that? Is it specified by some spec? I've read a few docs and I've played with my own Tomcat server and my own Google Analytics account, but I don't understand how the "magic" happens. Bonus (totally related) question: if, on my own website (served by Tomcat), I put a link to another site, does the other site see my website as the "referrer" without me doing anything special in Tomcat?

• LinqDataSource wizard table list is not refreshing after updating LinqToSql classes

  I have changed my dbml file like this. I have deleted all the tables and stored procs. I added new tables and stored procs from a new database. In the code-behind, I can access the new tables and stored procs. However, in the LinqDataSource using the same dbContext when I'm trying to configure the LinqDataSource. I can see all the old tables in the wizard drop-down. How to refresh the the wizard drop-down so that I can select the newly added tables? Deleting the old LinqDataSourceand adding a new one is not working.

• Problem in Setting image in imageview inside ListView in Android?

  Hi, I have a listview which includes 2 textviews and 1 imageview. Now, the image in imageview will be set on certain conditions otherwise it should be left blank with no image. The problem is the images are not coming in proper rows. Say, for eg the image should be displayed at row 3 but its displayed at row 4. And, in some cases each row will have the same image. Has someone faced this kind of an issue? I am really clueless about the reason behind this. Can anyone point out the problem? Regards Sunil

• VS 2010 Server Explorer Database Showing No Tables

  I'm working on a .Net application that needs to read from an Oracle 10g database behind Siebel. In VS 2010 Server Explorer, I've created a connection using the OracleClient type connector with a reference to the Oracle TNS service name as the "server name." The "Test Connection" button shows that the connection is successful. However, in the Server Explorer, when I go to expand the Tables, no tables are shown. I know for a fact that there are 3000+ tables in the database (thanks Siebel). Anyone know what's happening here? I'd like to create an Entity Framework 4.0 Entity Data Model... Thanks for the help!
