  I've been using matrix = *((fxMatrix*)&d3dMatrix); for quite a while. It worked fine until my screen turned black and received a bucket of frustration on my desk. fxMatrix contains 4 fxVectors. fxVector used to be 16 bytes, but now it was suddenly 20. This was because it inherited fxStreamable, which added the vTable. So one solution is of course just to not inherit fxStreamable, and leave a comment saying that it must always be 16 bytes and never more. Another solution would be to make conversion functions, and copy the matrix completely. This makes it more secure, but has an impact on the performance. I suppose this is the best idea. Another solution is to not convert at all, and stick to D3DXMATRIX, but this makes the engine inconsistent and I personally really dislike this idea. What is your opinion?

• Changing colour of types for VB.net in VS

  I am currently working on a VB.NET project and the hardest thing that I am having trouble with is that everything is black and blue. Having worked a lot with C#, I really like the way that types are colored differently. I have tried going in and having a look at the "Tools > Options > Fonts and Colors" and the various "User Types" under "Display Items" is set to a different colour but its not reflecting that colour in the text editor. Any assistance would be appreciated.

  I'm finding it difficult to understand when it is necessary to create class methods. From what I've read, they are important for creating new objects, but I do not see how.   I've been using indexes on my mysql databases for a while now but never properly learnt about them. Generally I put an index on any fields that i will be searching or selecting using a WHERE clause but sometimes it doesn't seem so black and white. What are the best practises for mysql indexes? example situations/dilemas: If a table has six columns and all of them are searchable, should i index all of them or none of them? . What are the negetive performance impacts of indexing? . If i have a VARCHAR 2500 column which is searchable from parts of my site, should i index it?

  I am using Xcode's SplitView template as the base for my project and I only want to accept Landscape mode.   If we suppose that every fingerprint is made of concentric curves (ellipses or circles) - and I'm aware of the fact that not every fingerprint is - how can I find center of those concentric curves? Let's take this "ideal" fingerprint and try to find out its center ... My approaches were to try: Find the spectrum through columns/rows of the image and try to find columns/rows that maximize particular band of the spectrum. I thought that column going through the center would have most regular pattern of changing amplitudes - therefore, most recognizible harmonic. My second approach was to try to count the changes of black-and-white also through the columns and rows, and to maximize that amount among rows and columns also. While these methods work to the some extant, with some additional filtering, they fail, when fingerprint is "not ideal as this one is". Can you think of any different approach? Are there standard ways to do it?

• Develop iPhone application remotely?

  4 java developers are new to iPod Touch/iPhone app development. They have an idea for an app. They have never used Xcode or Macs before. Instead of spending money for a new iMac or Mac Mini for each of them, my boss would like to sell them a $999 Apple server, hosted at a facility connected a single T1 line, and have all 4 people work remotely in Xcode. Is this feasible? Is anyone doing anything like this? Specifically, is 1 T1 enough for realistic remote app development? Would they have to work in black & white via Logmein or Gotomeeting to get decent speed? Can four people work remotely together on an Xcode project at the same time? Do they absolutely need their own Macs to connect their iPod Touches or iPhones physically to, or can they connect to their existing PCs with iTunes and install their in-development apps that way?

  I am designing an image decoder and as a first step I tried to just copy the using c. i.e open the file, and write its contents to a new file. Below is the code that I used. while((c=getc(fp))!=EOF) fprintf(fp1,"%c",c); where fp is the source file and fp1 is the destination file. The program executes without any error, but the image file(".bmp") is not properly copied. I have observed that the size of the copied file is less and only 20% of the image is visible, all else is black. When I tried with simple text files, the copy was complete. Do you know what the problem is?

• I need a simple slideshow for images of different sizes

  I'm looking for a very basic slideshow which displays images of various sizes. For example, the first image could be a standard 800x600 but the next might be a taller portrait image and so on. The slideshow doesn't need to have any controls. The specification just states that the page will be black and in the centre there'll be the area where images will display. As far as I know, it will be very simple like this - www.jeffcutter.net. I'm limited on time here so I'm not able to look into writing a custom one or anything like that. • jQuery tabs work in Safari and firefox but show up as bullet point in IE

  I am using the jquery tabs . It shows up fine in Safari and firefox, however it will not load correct in IE. They show up as bullet points in stead of tabs.   I would like to know if the app icon on the iPhone can be slightly different than the one shown in a large version in Apple's App Store. • Make text appear briefly in a JPanel

  Hi, I am trying to make text appear briefly before it disappears. It would be along the lines of 1) Set color to black 2) wait x amount of seconds 3) set color to background color The method I call is repaint(), which then calls paintComponent(Graphics painter). repaint() is called only if I press the space-bar. I thought of trying repaint();Thread.sleep(1000);repaint(); (I do catch the Interrupt exception, just not shown), but it only calls paintComponent once per space-bar . Is there an easy way to do this or is this something that is a bit challenging?

• are Hierarchical SIngletons in Java possible?

  I've been toying with an interesting idea (No idea if I'll include it in any code, but it's fun to think about) Let's say we have a program that requires a large number of classes, all of a certain subclass. And those classes all need to be singletons. Now, we could write the singleton pattern for each of those classes, but it seems wasteful to write the same code over and over, and we already have a common base class. It would be really nice to create a getSingleton method of A that when called from a subclass, returns a singleton of the B class (cast to class A for simplicity) class A{ public A getSingleton(){ //Wizardry } } class B extends A{ } A blargh = B.getSingleton() A gish = B.getSingleton() if(A == B) System.out.println("It works!") It seems to me that the way to do this would be to recognize and call B's default constructor (assuming we don't need to pass anything in.) I know a little of the black magic of reflection in Java, but i'm not sure if this can be done. Anyone interested in puzzling over this?

  I have an input text in a form that has a problem in MSIE7. When the text field is filled and I continue typing, the background starts scrolling left along with the text. • What approach should be suitable for user authentification in simle client/server app

  My previous question was closed so I will be more specific. I need to create an application, desktop one written in C#, that will ask for user credentials and after verification opens the GUI allowing to work with DB (black box for users). It should be used from everywhere, not LAN or SQL domain. I assume I would need to do the following: Create a client and a server applications that will deal with authentification. That would mean a lot of socketing stuff.. Once the user is verified, the client queries would be sent to database (client-server-DB). The server would need to send the DB data sets back to the client. As you can see, this is just my guess but I have no idea whether its too complicated or completely wrong. The main thing is that it must be desktop app (not web based one) and accessible from everywhere. I am interested in main points how to design the system and will be extremely grateful for that.

  In Expression Blend 4, I want to change the Foreground of a custom button on different states. I'm just able to change the Background and BorderBrush. Just like this: If the state is "Normal", the color of text "Button" is Black, while the state is "Pressed", the color of text "Button" is White. On Brushes Panel under Properties Panel, there're 3 properties but no Foreground property: Who can help me? I'm so perplexed. Edit I find ContentControl have a Foreground property, but ContentPresenter haven't. Wether I should use ContentControl instead of ContentPresenter?

• viewForHeaderInSection - create header that would display properly in all cases

  I have an interesting problem/question and i'm not sure if it is even doable. So I have a custom header view for regular UITableView. But it's transparent and it doesn't fill fill table width. So it displayed properly when table is scrolled and this header view is displayed above cell content (sticked to the top). But when same header is displayed between two sections down - it looks ugly, because it's transparent and it's either displayed above black rectangle or above table background. I was wondering is there way to customize header view for when it's stick to the top and when it's not. Or... may be it's possible to specify what needs to be displayed underneath header view when it's between sections. Something like sectionSeparatorView?

• What's a very easy C++ profiler (VC++)?

  I've used a few profilers in the past and never found them particularly easy. Maybe I picked bad ones, maybe I didn't really know what I was expecting! But I'd like to know if there are any 'standard' profilers which simply drop in and work? I don't believe I need massively fine-detailed reports, just to pick up major black-spots. Ease of use is more important to me at this point. It's VC++ 2008 we're using (I run standard edition personally). I don't suppose there are any tools in the IDE for this, I can't see any from looking at the main menus?

• Converting a Matrix to a grid of colors

  I'm currently making a console application in C# (will be going to a Windows Form application in the future. Sooner if needed). My current objective is to have a matrix (current size 52x42) be exported as an image (bitmap, jpeg, png, I'm flexible) where each value in the matrix (0, 1, 2, 3) is portrayed as a white, black, blue, or red square of size 20px x 20px with a grid 1px wide seperating each 'cell'. Can this even be done in a console application, and if so how? If not, what would I need to get it working in a Windows Form application?
