• Remote desktop logs in with saved credentials when connecting from one computer but asks for username and password from another.

  I have two computers on which I recently installed windows 7 64 bit. Using VPN, they connect to remote network on which there is a Windows Server 2000 SP4 computer. User is supposed to connect to server using remote desktop. I set same VPN and remote desktop settings on both computers with Windows 7. I set Remote desktop to save connection credentials on both computers, but when I connect to server form one computer, it uses saved credentials and I don't get log-in prompt on server side. On the other computer with same settings using same username and password, I get log-in prompt once the remote desktop connects to server. I even tried copying the .rdp file from the computer on which everything is working fine to the other computer, but that didn't help. Note that I'm not trying to have both computers connected at the same time. What is causing this and how do I make the other computer skip windows server 2000 log-in prompt.

  I would like to achieve something whereby I have a spreadsheet such that the columns are: Column A - place name Column B - place name Column C - distance by road between places in columns A and B Column D - travel time by road between places in columns A and B I thought it might be possible using Google Docs' spreadsheet and its 'Google' functions, but I've not found any that might do the trick. In the end I could knock up an app to do it using the Google Maps API but would rather avoid it if I can.

• Google Apps claims my domain is registered but when I try to access it claims it is not

  Hi all, we have registered one of our domains with Google Apps 2 years ago. However, we didn't even use it. Now if I try to access: http://google.com/a/mydomain.com What I see is: Server error Sorry, you've reached a login page for a domain that isn't using Google Apps. Please check the web address and try again. Then I go to Google Apps Standard Edition signup page and type mydomain.com. However, what I get is: This domain has already been registered with Google Apps. Please contact your domain administrator for instructions on using Google Apps with this domain. Is there anyone who can explain me what this inconsistency is caused by and what I can do? Since Google Apps Standard Edition doesn't grant me to contact with Google, I can't even submit a bug report. Any help would be appreciated.

  I own a small business with two servers for webhosting. When setting up the primary (CentOS 5.5 + WHM, secondary is WHM DNS Only) server I kinda messed up the firewall, so the hackers could send stuff from my server. My primary IP is x.y.29.218. Anyway - I got blacklisted in several places, but now those blacklistings are gone. For a week or so, but Google still has my IP blacklisted. I handling serious damages because of that. • Search audio file for pattern?

  I want to split a very large audio file at certain points. At certain points a radio announcer comes on and says something like "deux radio" and it always sounds exactly the same (it's a recorded clip). So how can I find that bit of repeated audio through out the entire mp3? It would be nice if I could split at that point, but even if it spits out the times, I can split it with another program.

  Ever since FireFox 4, page tabs have been moved to the top of the window. This gets pretty irritating when surfing the net through a remote desktop session. Often when I want to switch tabs, if I accidentally move my mouse a little to much to the top, I get the remote desktop connection bar blocking the tabs instead, then I'd have to wait a few frustrating seconds before it disappears again. So, are there any methods to shrink or shorten the remote desktop connection bar or delay the appearance of it?

• How do I change the default corner of the Desktop?

  I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.8 and when I save things to the desktop, drop something there in Finder or take a screengrab with Cmd+Shift+3/4, it gets placed in the top-right corner. I tend to position my windows in a bottom-left to top-right diagonal fashion, meaning the top-right corner of the desktop is always covered, as such I'd rather that new things placed on the desktop appeared in the top-left, where there's a gap and I can get to them easily. Is it possible to adjust the "default" corner items are placed in on the Desktop? And if so, how would I go about doing so?

• How to install a desktop environment onto Ubuntu Server -- but without internet access or a CDROM?

  I am playing around with a computer which has no CDROM drive or internet access and I have installed Ubuntu Server onto it. I have that all up and running nicely but now I'd like to install Xfce, GNOME or something similar so I can load up a desktop environment from the command line if I wish. Obviously with internet access or a CDROM, this would be a simple task of using apt-get and it finding & retrieving the packages for me, I assume, but I do not have either. I do however have a USB drive and I have used Unetbootin to make it into a bootable drive with the Ubuntu Server disk image files on there. I have mounted the USB drive to /media/usb0 and tried the command "sudo apt-cdrom add -d /media/usb0" to get apt to recognise the USb drive as an "Ubuntu CD" -- a source of package files but apt-get doesn't seem to be finding Xfce.. I try "sudo apt-get install xfce" and "sudo apt-get install xfce4" but neither find the package.. I would prefer to have Xfce but GNOME would be OK too.. My question is, am I doing something wrong? I figured that the Ubuntu Server disk (or rather, my Ubuntu Server USB drive) might not have any desktop environment packages on there so I tried the Xubuntu Desktop disk too (again, from my USB drive). I tried "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" but it couldn't find the package - even though it is listed under the /casper/ directory in some MANIFEST file. Anyone see where I'm going wrong? Maybe apt-get install is looking somewhere other than my USB drive? Maybe my commands are wrong? Maybe the disks don't even have the desktop environments on!? • How to remove the dlinksearch browser search hijack

  Hi Gang, For the last few weeks all the machines on my home network are having the same problem whilst browsing the internet. When the user enters an invalid URL in the browser address bar, instead of the default browser behaviour, the request is sent to http://www1.dlinksearch.com/. As far as I can tell this is all machines and all browsers. It is so consistent I am wondering whether it has anything to do with our router. We use a DLink DIR-655 router so maybe the clue is in the name :) Anyhow, I cannot figure out how to disable/remove the offending behaviour. I've checked hosts files, spyware, AV etc. etc. Anybody have any ideas? Paul P.S. Apologies if this is not the right place to ask this type of question. I'm a bit stuck

• Is there a screen sharing/remote desktop app for mac that lets you use a different host screen resolution?

  Ok, there are tons and tons of questions about remote desktop for mac and they're all being closed as duplicates. I however am specifically looking for one that will let me use a different resolution than the host, the way you can with Remote Desktop for Windows. For instance, when I connect to my 11" Macbook Air booted into Windows7 from my quad-screen desktop, also booted into Win7 using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client, it blanks out the screen on the notebook, then virtualizes the video across all four of my desktop's monitors at their native resolutions (2560x1600, 2 x 1920x1200 and 1600x1200) and the notebook now acts as if it has four physical monitors connected to it. All of this from a notebook that only has a 1366 x 768 native resolution. Even when running OS X on the client running RDC, while it doesn't support multi-monitors like its Win counterpart, it still lets me run at the native resolution of the client screen of 2560x1600. Again, it just blanks out the host screen while doing so. However when using Mac's screen sharing, since that is just glorified VNC, it just mirrors what's already on the host's screen, meaning it will always be a single screen with the resolution of 1366x768. This of course makes sense since VNC is a mirroring solution, not a video-virtualizing one like RDC, but it means that on my quad-monitor setup, the remote window isn't even large enough to fill up a single monitor, let alone four (unless you have a client that can scale it up, but that's video scaling. It's still only 1366x768.) So what I'm looking for is if there is a solution on the Mac that lets me do the same thing as RDC in a Win environment. Don't care if I have to pay. I'd gladly pay several hundred dollars for this. I just need that specific feature. Note: People have suggested various VNC clients, but the VNC host still runs at 1366x768 so that will not work here. Ever. Also, people have suggested Synergy/Synergy+/Teleport and such which share the keyboard and mouse, not video. Completely different animal unrelated to what I'm looking for.

• Google account gives ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT errors

  A couple of days ago, I started being unable to connect to accounts.google.com, which handles logins to all kinds of google services. I get this error in Chrome: Error 126 (net::ERR_SSL_BAD_RECORD_MAC_ALERT): Unknown error. In IE I get this: I assume it is the same error, just wrapped up. I run Win8 RTM. On the SAME machine, using the same network card, in a VMWare workstation image running Win7, I am able to connect perfectly. On another of my machines on my network, I am also still able to connect with no problem. My girlfriend uses the same network and has also complained a couple of times about this error (google calendar) - but this is anecdotal, since her technical troubleshooting abilities stop at "xxxx is broken". Her machine runs Win7. ;) I have rebooted, cleared cookies, do not run any antivirus/firewall, have not changed network config. The first 3-4 days after installing Win8, I did not have any problems. I have also searched, and found a hint about enabling SSL2.0 in connection settings, which did not help. Anybody know something about this error and what I can do to fix it?

• Strange problem with Google Mail and IMAP on Outlook 2007

  I work for a small non-profit organization. We have about 35 administrative employees who use e-mail. We're on a Windows network with a domain. Everyone is running XP Pro and Office 2007 with all updates/patches. We used to use POP3 mail through a local provider. However, we recently signed-up for a free Google Apps account, and we switched to IMAP mail through Google. Everyone uses Outlook 2007 as the client. For about ten days, everything was working fine. Yesterday afternoon, we suddenly developed a strange and annoying problem. Every time you send an e-mail message, a copy of your outgoing message shows up in your inbox. It's as if you're adding your own address to the CC: line of every message. Nothing has changed on our end. I was hoping that the problem was a temporary glitch that would resolve itself, but here we are about 24 hours later, and it's still happening. I searched Twitter, and there were a handful of vague messages about issues with Google mail and IMAP, but I didn't see any references to this specific problem. Any thoughts on what's going on here and how to fix it?

How can I get a gauge over a 24 hour period of the exact amount of CPU and IO(reads/writes) that fulltext is responsible for, in relation to global SQL Server resource usage. Are there any perfmon counters, DMVs or profiler traces I can use to help answer this question?

• Notepad++ Search & Replace with Regular Expressions

  I know its simple, but I can't get it to work... I have a strings like {span style="display:none"}123{/span} and {span style="display:none"}456{/span} and {span style="display:none"}789{/span} in a file. I want to remove all of these string. So, I thought a simple regular expression replace in NotePad++ should be like {span style="display:none"}[(.)]{/span} but, this is not working. Thank for your help!

• 'The rpc server is unavailable' or 'access is denied' error when using Remote desktop Services Manager on Windows 7 (but mstsc.exe works!)

  I am trying to connect to a Windows XP workstation from a Windows 7 Ultimate workstation using Remote Desktop Services Manager. I am able to do a Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe) session from the Win7 machine to the WinXP machine with no problem at all. When running the Remote Desktops Admin (tsmmc.msc) too on a Windows XP box, I can also connect with no problem. However, when I use the new Remote Desktop Services Manager on Windows 7 and try to connect, I get the error: "The rpc server is unavailable" What could cause this? Has there been some fundamental change in Remote Desktop Services Manager, does it connect in a different way somehow? Update #1 Turned off firewall on the Windows XP box and the "The rpc server is unavailable" error went away; so RDSM seems to be using an entirely new port/connection/service compared to mstsc.exe or the old Remote Desktops Admin tool. Now... after disabling the firewall, I get a new error: Access is Denied. After doing some googling, I found some articles discussing this; basically, the error is very misleading - the actual problem is, if either side of the connection has dual monitors, and they are not both Win7 Ultimate, then you cannot connect using Remote Desktop Services Manager...the reason is, by default it uses the /multimon switch, and this switch requires a certain level of Windows license - and, there seems to be no way of changing this default (if anyone knows of a way to change this default, please post an answer or comment!). • how do I delete my alternate drive icon on the ubuntu desktop?

  I'm on a system with a Windows drive and an Ubuntu drive (both physical, not virtual). Under the Ubuntu Places menu, there is a "320 GB file system" which is the Windows disk. The same drive also appears as an icon on the desktop (but unlike everything else on the desktop, it does not appear in the directory listing of ~/Desktop). I think the icon was put on the desktop by accident and I never use it because the Places menu suffices. How can I delete this icon? Selecting then deleting does not work.

I have read that this is possible through indexing, but to get through the indexing steps I need to make files available offline. This network drive I speak of has about 2tb of files on it. How in the heck can I keep all this straight. I imagine there would be syncing errors everywhere if I were to make all of these files available offline. Not to mention not all files being current due to the large amounts of files. Anyone have suggestions?

• Is there a remote desktop or vnc app for the IPad that properly handles Bluetooth keyboard shortcuts?

  I've tried 4 or 5 remote desktop apps, the most notable being Jump Desktop and Splashtop Streamer. Most of these remote desktop apps have some sort of on-screen keyboard for typing with the IPad, including special keys like shift, control, alt. The special keys act like "sticky keys" meaning they stay depressed until another key is pressed, to make it easier to do key combinations. Even non-standard keyboard combinations like shift+enter work, in this sticky sense. When using a Bluetooth keyboard with the remote desktop apps, both Jump and Splashtop Streamer recognize the shift + letter combination for doing capital letters. However, generically pressing shift, cntrl, or alt does not depress the sticky on screen shift buttons or do anything at all. Only a few combinations are recognized (again like shift+letter, cntrl+C). Most combinations do not work (shift+enter, alt+tab). Even having the keyboard shortcuts work like sticky keys (press shift then enter, not both at once) would be much better than the limited functionality they have now. Is there an app, jailbreak app, or workaround that lets me use bluetooth keyboard properly with remote desktop on the ipad?

• Can the traditional remote desktop client be accessed in Windows RT?

  As mentioned in another question, I've been unable to connect through the Remote Desktop metro app to some computers, in particular those requiring VPN access or load balancers. I'm considering purchasing a Microsoft Surface RT, but given that the app store hasn't matured significantly yet and some niche software will likely never be ported to the Modern UI, I must have acess to remote systems somehow. Until Citrix fixes the receiver app for Windows 8, I'm stuck using remote desktop. Which doesn't work. I've heard that Windows RT comes with some of the Microsoft desktop programs built in, like Microsoft Office and File Explorer. Is the "normal" Remote Desktop Connection program available in Windows RT, and if so, is it 100% compatible with previous versions?

  i have a little question. I have a big html file and want to replace lots of things inside a lot of times. The only problem i cant solve is a replace with a variable. Example: <image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"> should be transformed in <a href="start_files\0002.jpg" target="_blank"><image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"></a> do you have an idea how to do it? I have a windows system with Notepad2 and Notepad++ and i could install a new tool if needed. (like Windows SED). The best solution would be a batch solution where i can add other transformations.
