• Which open source/free CMSs allow for staging content changes before putting live?

  I'm not sure that I've phrased the question all that well. What I'm really looking for is a feature of CMSs where content changes are made on a restricted access 'staging/preview' site, before being published to the live external site. The open source/free CMSs I've looked at so far (Textpattern, WordPress, Movable Type) don't seem to allow this, as far as I can see. Although they allow new content to be saved as draft/pending, viewable by users with appropriate privileges, this doesn't work with changes to existing content -- a post/page can't be live and also have a new version pending. (Do correct me if I'm wrong). I realise it should be possible to do this by making all changes on a staging site, and then replicating the contents of that database to a separate live site manually, but am looking for something a little more elegant. Edit: Just to clarify, both systems which involve synchronising a live database with a staging database systems which offer live/staging views of a single database would be of interest. Am sure I have seen both approaches in commercial/proprietary CMSs.

• Put Google Chrome, AVG on a flash drive

  I often install programs on others' computers such as LibreOffice, which, when they only have a dial-up connection, takes forever to download. So instead I keep it on a flash drive and install it from there. This works fine for LibreOffice. However, some programs, when you download them all you are downloading is a downloader - when you download ChromeSetup and open it, a installer window opens which actually downloads Chrome. Dial-up users then see that it will take 4 hours. Another example is AVG free antivirus - you download an installer, which when opened actually downloads AVG. However this doesn't work too well for dial-up users. How do I put the entire program of things like Chrome and AVG on a flash drive for fast installation on others' slow connections?

• In Linux, is there a way to get a warning if I forget to unplug my pendrive?

  I forgot my pendrive plugged in when leaving the computer lab yesterday, and I would have lost it if it wasn't for a kind soul finding and returning it. I want to avoid this in the future and apparently there are some tools you can use in windows that warn you if you are leaving a pendrive behind when logging off or shutting down the computer. Is there anything similar that works on Linux? I need this to work on Fedora 17 (GNOME 3 shell), and preferably without requiring administrator privileges.

• Why does my Microsoft Habu force me to unplug and replug in when booting up?

  I'm not too sure why, but every single time I boot my computer, I have to unplug and replug my semi-new Microsoft Habu, when I use Windows 7. Why does it do this? I've been through my BIOS, msconfig, and what-not.. It just seems to happen all the time. I've even looked in forums, with people resorting to changing their mouse because of the same issue.. It's stupid. Hopefully someone else can help... hopefully someone with experience with this mouse.

• Activesync wont connect to my Windows CE 6 device

  Hi! When I connect my Windows CE 6 device to my development machine I get Microsoft USB Sync to register in Windows Device manager. But I cant connect with ActiveSync for some reason. Any ideas on how to fix this? It worked with Windows CE 5, but when we upgraded ActiveSync-functionality disappeared.

• How long will a USB key with an OS installed on it last?

  I've heard numerous times that installing an OS on a USB key is a bad thing to do, as USBs typically have a certain number of writes before dying, and installing an OS on it will wear it out (unless it's used sporadically for rescue purposes). Nonetheless, I am very tempted to install some flavour of Linux (Ubuntu or Arch, I haven't decided yet) on a small, transportable, USB Key. My problem is, although you read a lot that it's "bad", you are never told how bad. How long would it last (provided, say, a pc that is 24/7 on)? A month? A year? Five years? Is there recipes to make it last longer? Is there any reason beside weariness that should prevent me from attempting this? I mean, if it can be calculated, then I could theoretically shield myself by doing regular backups on another key when the deadline gets close (for example). Notes I am not talking of using a USB as a live CD, but actually installing the OS on it.) When I say "USB Key", I refer to the little USBs with a flash memory, not an external USB hard drive. For the curious, my reason is that I work in a lot of different places, on different PCs, and I have a very customized session, with my own WM, my own key bindings, my own scripts, , a selection of plugins for firefox and chrome, etc, and currently I am synchronizing all this through a mix of dropbox, git, and transporting files on USBs, and and it's becoming a chore. It would be much simpler for me to just plug the USB and mount the hard disk of the PC I am using and use it's processing power without actually needing to install any OS on it.

• How to boot XBMC 10.1 ISO on USB via grub?

  I am trying to boot the XBMC Live image (http://xbmc.org/download/) as ISO from USB via grub 1.98. I have a Kubuntu 11.04 image there as well already and it works using the following configuration: menuentry "Kubuntu 11.04 64bit" { loopback loop /boot/iso/kubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/kubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso noeject noprompt initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.gz } However, if I try to boot XBMC in an analogue way, I always get an error "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system". I found different approaches to install XBMC, but they all are about installing the distribution on USB, or using grub4dos, or unetbootin. I already found out that XBMC 10.1 is based on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, so I tried those settings - even though they are quite similar to Kubuntu 11.04. Finally, the ISO contains a grub configuration as well in boot/grub/grub.cfg, but even with those parameters, I get the error above.   I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?   Hi Guys, I'm having an issue where after the server has been up for a period of time (~week/few days) the server will start reading corrupt data. For instance when I run a sha1sum of a file after a fresh boot it remains the same. However after a while I will start to get segfaults and from then on whenever I read this file I get a different sha1sum. UPDATE: I removed the usb soundcard and got rid of all alsa config. Everything is working as before the install but it sure feels fragile.

• How to use JQUERY to filter table rows dynamically using multiple form inputs

  I'm displaying a table with multiple rows and columns. I'm using a JQUERY plugin called uiTableFilter which uses a text field input and filters (shows/hides) the table rows based on the input you provide. All you do is specify a column you want to filter on, and it will display only rows that have the text field input in that column. Simple and works fine. I want to add a SECOND text input field that will help me narrow the results down even further. So, for instance if I had a PETS table and one column was petType and one was petColor -- I could type in CAT into the first text field, to show ALL cats, and then in the 2nd text field, I could type black, and the resulting table would display only rows where BLACK CATS were found. Basically, a subset. If 10 rows are returned after applying one filter, the 2nd filter should only apply to THOSE 10 rows. I've tried LIVE and BIND, but not working. Can anyone shed some light on where I'm going wrong? • How to install/upgrade to Windows 8.1 RTM without a Microsoft account

  When I installed Windows 8, I deliberately chose not to use a Microsoft account to sign in. I like to keep things separate, and just logon with a tradional local account. Any apps that require me to sign-in with my Live account, will have to prompt me to sign-in. Now, I just updated to 8.1, but towards the end of the setup process, I was asked to sign-in with a Microsoft account or create one. Unlike when installation Windows 8, there didn't seem to be any option to skip that step, or otherwise close the sign-in prompt and continue to my updated Windows installation. At least not that I could find. This is particular annyoing, when setting up computers for friends and family, whom I support. They may not have, or have any interest in getting, a Microsoft account and I'm reluctant to use my own. I realize I can disconnect my Microsoft account after the fact, but is there really no way to install, or upgrade to, Windows 8.1, without being forced to create a Microsoft account? If there is, how does one go a about that?

• MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender?) uses a lot of CPU at startup and runs two instances on a single core

  I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2 on a single core AMD64 processor, and I've got two instances of MsMpEng.exe starting up when I start up and log in. They use 64MB and 32MB of ram and 140MB and 80MB of virtual memory, and fluctuate around 80% CPU usage for about 5 minutes at start up. They are (I read) associated with Windows Defender, but I'm concerned about: There's two of them, everything I read generally has only one reported. They might be scanning each other, and I want that to stop. They might be getting scanned by avgrsx.exe (AVG Free 8) (uses about 16Mb v ram) They might also be scanning moe.exe (assosciated with ms live mesh, which I'm considering getting rid of) Lastly I have Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't know the process name associated there. The main concern of mine (apart from the double instances) is that these are all trying to prioritize scanning each other at once except maybe moe.exe. This might seem legitimate but is likely a useless drain on resources. Have I made a mistake in having all of these installed, or is there a way to inform them not to do whatever they're doing that's taking about 5+ minutes at start up? [I also have Google Desktop, but I'm keeping that.] Comment if none of this makes sense to you.

• Windows 8 folder to folder sync software

  I'm looking for direct folder to folder synchronization in Windows 8. I was previously using Live Mesh to accomplish this, but now it looks like that is no longer an option. Note that I'm talking about direct folder to folder sync between different computers, not syncing to the cloud. I'm aware of products like Google Drive, SkyDrive, Dropbox, etc. The problem with them is the space limitation. Basically, I was syncing important files before between my desktop and all of my laptops. One folder for example is My Pictures. This folder has almost 40 gigs of files, which is why the options listed above are not going to work for me. Just need direct syncing, nothing stored on the cloud. I was told by a Microsoft employee that SkyDrive would be replacing Mesh and would provide all the same functionality. So far this looks to be completely false, since the ability to remote desktop is gone along with folder to folder sync. Unless I'm just missing something?

• Messenger Thinks My Ip is Invalid

  Hello. I am using Windows Live Messenger 2009 on Windows 7. I am using a 3G modem (ZTE Propietary USB Modem) I connect to the Internet using a software my ISP provided me. In last three days, my Messenger started to disconnect. Here is what I observed and tried to do: 1- I can browse web, can do FTP transfer etc. and obiviously have a valid IP. 2- I can sign in to Messenger (appear offline) but when I change my status to anything other then appear offline, Messenger says my connection to service has been lost. (However, it exists.) 3- When I run, MSN Connection Troubleshooter, it says my IP is invalid. When I click repair, it says repaired and just after that, I run the troubleshooter again, and it says my IP is invalid again. (However, it is valid and I am browsing the net.) 4- If I connect the Internet through eterhet or wireless there is no problem at all. 5- I re-installed Messenger (deleting all settings manually through registry and folders), re-installed all drivers and software related to USB 3G Modem. It doesn't work. And then, I took a full backup then formatted entire computer, installed a fresh windows 7, after 5 minutes, the same problem occured. What do you recommend? What can I do? However this module seems to be beta and there is little documentation and no tests :-/ Has anyone used this module in production?
