  • Partitioning Windows 8.1 in order to have data partition first and system partitions at HDD end

    - by LivingSilver94
    How can I have recovery partition at the HDD end? My aim is to have data partition installed on fastest sectors of my hard drive, as I don't really care if restoring operations are slow... During Windows installation, when I create a partition, I get immediately created EFI and recovery ones just before the actual data partition. EFI position is good, I want my PC boot fast, but I want to move partitions I don't care about speed. I've also considered GParted, but I think I'm not able to use it :P

  • Moving files within an ext4 filesystem?

    - by HT74
    I'd like to decrease the access-time for some files by moving them to the beginning of the fs. Task 1: Clear a certain block range at the beginning of the fs (moving existing files to free space elsewhere). Task 2: Move the files in question to that block range (should be able to grow a bit). How would I do that?

  • Can I delay selection of a file name?

    - by Xavierjazz
    XP SP3 I have my system set up so that I do not need to double click on an item to open it. However, I find that items are selected when I move over them swiftly. This is a problem when I want to save a file and inadvertently pass over another file name. It immediately gets selected. Is there a way to delay this selection for, say, a second so that they are not selected so quickly? Thanks. Regards,

  • How do I group Quick Launch icons in Windows Vista?

    - by user39619
    My quick launch task bar has about 30 icons and is pretty unmanegable. What I would like is to create Quick Launch groups, so I can move my mouse over the "Design Group" icon and a pop-up/menu will appear that shows my icons for Illustrator, Photoshop, etc... I can almost get there by linking to a folder and having my Design icons in there, but I have to click on the icon. Can anyone recommend anything here?

  • Breaking out of first element in IHTMLTxtRange

    - by XwipeoutX
    I'm trying to do a rich text editor for a web application, and I need to be able to mark some elements in the text as uneditable by the user. The reason for this is they're placeholders for dynamic content (like created date) that I want to have a live preview for. Take the following Code as an example - there's no toolbar or anything in this one, for light weightness, but the textarea and html are synchronized. <!-- DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" --> <html> <head> <title>Hi</title> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script> $(function() { g = {}; g.iFrame = document.createElement("IFRAME"); $("#frameContainer").append(g.iFrame); g.iDoc = g.iFrame.contentWindow.document; g.iDoc.designMode = "on"; g.jTextArea = $("#textContainer textarea"); setTimeout(function() { g.iDoc.body.innerHTML = "<b class=\"notype\">Cannot type here</b>"; $(g.iDoc).trigger("keyup"); $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); }, 0); $(g.iDoc).keyup(function() { g.jTextArea.text(g.iDoc.body.innerHTML); }); g.jTextArea.keyup(function() { g.iDoc.body.innerHTML = this.innerText; }); var getSelection = function() { if (typeof g.iDoc.selection !== "undefined" && g.iDoc.selection.type !== "Text" && g.iDoc.selection.type !== "None") { g.iDoc.selection.clear(); } return g.iDoc.selection.createRange(); }; $(g.iDoc).keypress(function(event) { // If we're in a marked field, disable the operation. var sel = getSelection(); if ($(sel.parentElement()).hasClass('notype')) { sel.moveToElementText(sel.parentElement()); sel.collapse(); sel.move("character", -1); sel.select(); $("#log").append("<div>outside of thing</div>"); } }); $(testLink).click(function() { // Try and insert stuff at the front $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); var sel = getSelection(); sel.moveToElementText(sel.parentElement()); sel.collapse(); sel.move("character", -100); sel.pasteHTML("Before html?"); $(g.iDoc).trigger("keyup"); $(g.iDoc.body).focus(); }); }); </script> </head> <body id="#body"> <div id="container"> <div id="frameContainer"> <h1> Frame</h1> </div> <div id="textContainer"> <h1> Text</h1> <textarea rows="10" cols="80"></textarea> </div> <a href="#" id="testLink">Test</a> <div id="log"> </div> </div> </body> </html> In the keyup binding, I can successfuly detect if I'm inside another element, and move the cursor to the front of the text before inserting it no problem. However, since there is no text before the element marked as 'notype', it gets inserted inside the same element. This is double bad when the user presses "enter", as a new tag is genrated, and the "notype" tag is duplicated, obviously not required. I want the behaviour as follows: * If the user types while the cursor is in the 'notype' tag, the cursor is moved to front and the text goes there * If the cursor is at the last position inside the 'notype' tag, then the text appears after the tag * If the user types anywhere else, it's inserted as always. The link at the bottom tries to manually put the cursor at the front and insert the html. Obviously fails. I know this one can work by doing something like $(g.iDoc.body).prepend("before!"), but this obviously won't work in a real scenario (using keyup).

  • How to implement drag and drop in Flex Grid control?

    - by Bogdan
    I have a simple Grid control with some buttons that I want to be able to move around. The code below does work, but it takes a lot of effort to actually do the drag&drop and it is not clear where the drop will happen. I have to move the mouse around a lot to get to a state where the drop is not rejected. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to make this more "user friendly". <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical" verticalAlign="middle" horizontalAlign="center" height="200" width="200"> <mx:Script> <![CDATA[ import mx.containers.GridItem; import mx.controls.Button; import mx.core.DragSource; import mx.events.*; import mx.managers.DragManager; private function dragInit(event:MouseEvent):void { if(event.buttonDown) { var button:Button = event.currentTarget as Button; var dragSource:DragSource = new DragSource(); dragSource.addData(button, 'button'); DragManager.doDrag(button, dragSource, event); } } private function dragEnter(event:DragEvent): void { var target:GridItem = event.currentTarget as GridItem; if (event.dragSource.hasFormat('button') && target.getChildren().length == 0) { DragManager.acceptDragDrop(target); DragManager.showFeedback(DragManager.MOVE); } } private function dragDrop(event:DragEvent): void { var target:GridItem = event.currentTarget as GridItem; var button:Button = event.dragSource.dataForFormat('button') as Button; target.addChild(button); } ]]> </mx:Script> <mx:Grid> <mx:GridRow width="100%" height="100%"> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> <mx:Button label="A" width="40" height="40" mouseMove="dragInit(event)"/> </mx:GridItem> </mx:GridRow> <mx:GridRow width="100%" height="100%"> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> <mx:Button label="B" width="40" height="40" mouseMove="dragInit(event)"/> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> </mx:GridRow> <mx:GridRow width="100%" height="100%"> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> <mx:Button label="C" width="40" height="40" mouseMove="dragInit(event)"/> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> <mx:GridItem width="44" height="44" dragEnter="dragEnter(event)" dragDrop="dragDrop(event)"> </mx:GridItem> </mx:GridRow> </mx:Grid> <mx:Style> GridItem { borderColor: #A09999; borderStyle: solid; borderThickness: 2; horizontal-align: center; vertical-align: center; } Grid { borderColor: #A09999; borderStyle: solid; borderThickness: 2; horizontalGap: 0; verticalGap: 0; horizontal-align: center; vertical-align: center; } </mx:Style> </mx:Application>

  • jQuery: Highlight element under mouse cursor?

    - by Ralph
    I'm trying to create an "element picker" in jQuery, like Firebug has. Basically, I want to highlight the element underneath the user's mouse. Here's what I've got so far, but it isn't working very well: $('*').mouseover(function (event) { var $this = $(this); $div.offset($this.offset()).width($this.width()).height($this.height()); return false; }); var $div = $('<div>') .css({ 'background-color': 'rgba(255,0,0,.5)', 'position': 'absolute', 'z-index': '65535' }) .appendTo('body'); Basically, I'm injecting a div into the DOM that has a semi-transparent background. Then I listen for the mouseover event on every element, then move the div so that it covers that element. Right now, this just makes the whole page go red as soon as you move your mouse over the page. How can I get this to work nicer? Edit: Pretty sure the problem is that as soon as my mouse touches the page, the body gets selected, and then as I move my mouse around, none of the moments get passed through the highligher because its overtop of everything. Firebug Digging through Firebug source code, I found this: drawBoxModel: function(el) { // avoid error when the element is not attached a document if (!el || !el.parentNode) return; var box = Firebug.browser.getElementBox(el); var windowSize = Firebug.browser.getWindowSize(); var scrollPosition = Firebug.browser.getWindowScrollPosition(); // element may be occluded by the chrome, when in frame mode var offsetHeight = Firebug.chrome.type == "frame" ? FirebugChrome.height : 0; // if element box is not inside the viewport, don't draw the box model if (box.top > scrollPosition.top + windowSize.height - offsetHeight || box.left > scrollPosition.left + windowSize.width || scrollPosition.top > box.top + box.height || scrollPosition.left > box.left + box.width ) return; var top = box.top; var left = box.left; var height = box.height; var width = box.width; var margin = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "margin"); var padding = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "padding"); var border = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "border"); boxModelStyle.top = top - margin.top + "px"; boxModelStyle.left = left - margin.left + "px"; boxModelStyle.height = height + margin.top + margin.bottom + "px"; boxModelStyle.width = width + margin.left + margin.right + "px"; boxBorderStyle.top = margin.top + "px"; boxBorderStyle.left = margin.left + "px"; boxBorderStyle.height = height + "px"; boxBorderStyle.width = width + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.top = margin.top + border.top + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.left = margin.left + border.left + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.height = height - border.top - border.bottom + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.width = width - border.left - border.right + "px"; boxContentStyle.top = margin.top + border.top + padding.top + "px"; boxContentStyle.left = margin.left + border.left + padding.left + "px"; boxContentStyle.height = height - border.top - padding.top - padding.bottom - border.bottom + "px"; boxContentStyle.width = width - border.left - padding.left - padding.right - border.right + "px"; if (!boxModelVisible) this.showBoxModel(); }, hideBoxModel: function() { if (!boxModelVisible) return; offlineFragment.appendChild(boxModel); boxModelVisible = false; }, showBoxModel: function() { if (boxModelVisible) return; if (outlineVisible) this.hideOutline(); Firebug.browser.document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(boxModel); boxModelVisible = true; } Looks like they're using a standard div + css to draw it..... just have to figure out how they're handling the events now... (this file is 28K lines long) There's also this snippet, which I guess retrieves the appropriate object.... although I can't figure out how. They're looking for a class "objectLink-element"... and I have no idea what this "repObject" is. onMouseMove: function(event) { var target = event.srcElement || event.target; var object = getAncestorByClass(target, "objectLink-element"); object = object ? object.repObject : null; if(object && instanceOf(object, "Element") && object.nodeType == 1) { if(object != lastHighlightedObject) { Firebug.Inspector.drawBoxModel(object); object = lastHighlightedObject; } } else Firebug.Inspector.hideBoxModel(); }, I'm thinking that maybe when the mousemove or mouseover event fires for the highlighter node I can somehow pass it along instead? Maybe to node it's covering...?

  • Can't create admin user on Heroku

    - by Nick5a1
    I am new to rails and I have gone through Kevin Skoglund's Ruby on Rails 3 Essential Training course on Lynda.com. Through the course you set up a simple cms, which I did. It doesn't cover Git or deployment but I've pushed my simple cms to github (https://github.com/nick5a1/Simple_CMS) and deployed to Heroku (http://nkarrasch.herokuapp.com/). In order to deploy to Heroku I followed the Heroku setup guide (https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/rails3) and switched my database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. As instructed I changed gen'mysql2' to gen 'sqlite3' in my Gemfile and ran bundle install before pushing. I then ran heroku run rake db:migrate. I'm running into 2 problems. When I try to log in (http://nkarrasch.herokuapp.com/access) I get an error "We're sorry, but something went wrong". I should instead be getting a flash message with invalid username/password combination. This is what I'm getting on my test environment on my local machine. Secondly, when I log into the Heroku console to create and create an admin user, when I try to save that user I get the following error: irb(main):004:0> user.save (1.2ms) BEGIN AdminUser Exists (1.9ms) SELECT 1 AS one FROM "admin_users" WHERE "admin_users"."username" = 'Nick5a1' LIMIT 1 (1.7ms) ROLLBACK => false Any advice on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated :). Thanks very much, Nick EDIT: Here are my Heroku logs: 2012-06-27T20:36:44+00:00 heroku[slugc]: Slug compilation started 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Add shared-database:5mb add-on by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Release v2 created by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Add RAILS_ENV, LANG, PATH, RACK_ENV, GEM_PATH config by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Release v3 created by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Release v4 created by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:34+00:00 heroku[api]: Deploy 1d82839 by [email protected] 2012-06-27T20:37:35+00:00 heroku[slugc]: Slug compilation finished 2012-06-27T20:37:36+00:00 heroku[web.1]: Starting process with command `bundle exec rails server -p 45450` 2012-06-27T20:37:40+00:00 app[web.1]: DEPRECATION WARNING: You have Rails 2.3-style plugins in vendor/plugins! • 1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 0.? AS3 Flash Cs4 (Round 2)

    - by charmaine
    (I have asked this before but I dont think I was direct enough with my question and therefore it did not get resolved so here goes again!) I am working through a book called Foundation Actionscript 3.0 Animation, making things move. I am now on Chapter 9 - Collision Detection. On two lines of my code I get the 1135 error, letting me know that I have an incorrect number of arguments. I have highlighted the two areas in which this occurs with asterisks: package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.events.Event; public class Bubbles extends Sprite { private var balls:Array; private var numBalls:Number = 10; private var centerBall:Ball; private var bounce:Number = -1; private var spring:Number = 0.2; public function Bubbles() { init(); } private function init():void { balls = new Array(); ***centerBall = new Ball(100, 0xcccccc);*** addChild(centerBall); centerBall.x = stage.stageWidth / 2; centerBall.y = stage.stageHeight / 2; for(var i:uint = 0; i < numBalls; i++) { ***var ball:Ball = new Ball(Math.random() * 40 + 5, Math.random() * 0xffffff);*** ball.x = Math.random() * stage.stageWidth; ball.y = Math.random() * stage.stageHeight; ball.vx = Math.random() * 6 - 3; ball.vy = Math.random() * 6 - 3; addChild(ball); balls.push(ball); } addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, onEnterFrame); } private function onEnterFrame(event:Event):void { for(var i:uint = 0; i < numBalls; i++) { var ball:Ball = balls[i]; move(ball); var dx:Number = ball.x - centerBall.x; var dy:Number = ball.y - centerBall.y; var dist:Number = Math.sqrt(dx * dx + dy * dy); var minDist:Number = ball.radius + centerBall.radius; if(dist < minDist) { var angle:Number = Math.atan2(dy, dx); var tx:Number = centerBall.x + Math.cos(angle) * minDist; var ty:Number = centerBall.y + Math.sin(angle) * minDist; ball.vx += (tx - ball.x) * spring; ball.vy += (ty - ball.y) * spring; } } } private function move(ball:Ball):void { ball.x += ball.vx; ball.y += ball.vy; if(ball.x + ball.radius > stage.stageWidth) { ball.x = stage.stageWidth - ball.radius; ball.vx *= bounce; } else if(ball.x - ball.radius < 0) { ball.x = ball.radius; ball.vx *= bounce; } if(ball.y + ball.radius > stage.stageHeight) { ball.y = stage.stageHeight - ball.radius; ball.vy *= bounce; } else if(ball.y - ball.radius < 0) { ball.y = ball.radius; ball.vy *= bounce; } } } } I think this is due to the non-existance of a Ball.as, when reading the tutorial I assumed it meant that I had to create a movie clip of a ball on stage and then export it for actionscript with the class name being Ball, however when flicking back through the book I saw that a Ball.as already existed, stating that I may need to use this again later on in the book, this read: package { import flash.display.Sprite; public class Ball extends Sprite { private var radius:Number; private var color:uint; public var vx:Number=0; public var vy:Number=0; public function Ball(radius:Number=40, color:uint=0xff0000) { this.radius=radius; this.color=color; init(); } public function init():void { graphics.beginFill(color); graphics.drawCircle(0, 0, radius); graphics.endFill(); } } } This managed to stop all the errors appearing however, it did not transmit any of the effects from Bubbles.as it just braught a Red Ball on the center of the stage. How would I alter this code in order to work in favour of Bubbles.as? Please Help! Thanks!

  • lwjgl isKeyDown canceling out other keys

    - by AKrush95
    While trying to create a simple game where a square is manipulated via the keyboard keys, I have come across a small, rather irritating problem. I would like it to work so that when the opposite directional key is pressed, the character will stop; the character may move the other two directions while stopped in this situation. This works perfectly with LEFT and RIGHT held down; the player may move UP or DOWN. If UP and DOWN are held down, however, the player will not move, nor will Java recognize that the LEFT or RIGHT keys were pressed. import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Random; import org.lwjgl.*; import org.lwjgl.input.Keyboard; import org.lwjgl.opengl.*; import static org.lwjgl.opengl.GL11.*; public class Main { private Man p; private ArrayList<Integer> keysDown, keysUp; public Main() { try { Display.setDisplayMode(new DisplayMode(640, 480)); Display.setTitle("LWJGLHelloWorld"); Display.create(); } catch (LWJGLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } p = new Man(0, 0); keysDown = new ArrayList<>(); keysUp = new ArrayList<>(); glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); glLoadIdentity(); glOrtho(0, 640, 480, 0, 1, -1); glMatrixMode(GL_MODELVIEW); while (!Display.isCloseRequested()) { glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); checkKeys(); p.draw(); Display.update(); Display.sync(60); } Display.destroy(); } public void checkKeys() { ArrayList<Integer> keys = new ArrayList<>(); keys.add(Keyboard.KEY_A); keys.add(Keyboard.KEY_D); keys.add(Keyboard.KEY_W); keys.add(Keyboard.KEY_S); for (int key : keys) { if (Keyboard.isKeyDown(key)) keysDown.add(key); else keysUp.add(key); } keysDown.removeAll(keysUp); keysUp = new ArrayList<>(); int speed = 4; int dx = 0; int dy = 0; if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(2))) { System.out.println("keyUP"); dy -= speed; } if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(3))) { System.out.println("keyDOWN"); dy += speed; } if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(0))) { System.out.println("keyLEFT"); dx -= speed; } if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(1))) { System.out.println("keyRIGHT"); dx += speed; } //if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(0)) && keysDown.contains(keys.get(1))) dx = 0; //if (keysDown.contains(keys.get(2)) && keysDown.contains(keys.get(3))) dy = 0; p.update(dx, dy); } public static void main(String[] args) { new Main(); } class Man { public int x, y, w, h; public float cR, cG, cB; public Man(int x, int y) { this.x = x; this.y = y; w = 50; h = 50; Random rand = new Random(); cR = rand.nextFloat(); cG = rand.nextFloat(); cB = rand.nextFloat(); } public void draw() { glColor3f(cR, cG, cB); glRecti(x, y, x+w, y+h); } public void update(int dx, int dy) { x += dx; y += dy; } } } That is the code that I am working with. In addition, I am unsure how to compile an executable jar that is using the lwjgl library in addition to slick-util.

  • Feedback + Bad output

    So I've got an assignment I think I'm more or less done with, but there is something which is messing up the output badly somewhere down the line, or even the calculation, and I don't see where the problem is. The assignment is to make a game in which a certain ammount of players run up through a tunnel towards a spot,where they will stop and spin around it,and then their dizziness is supposed to make them randomly either progress towards goal or regress back towards start.And each time they get another spot closer to goal,they get another "marking",and it goes on like this until one of them reaches goal. The program includes three files: one main.cpp,one header file and another cpp file. The header file: #ifndef COMPETITOR_H #define COMPETITOR_H #include <string> using namespace std; class Competitor { public: void setName(); string getName(); void spin(); void move(); int checkScore(); void printResult(); private: string name; int direction; int markedSpots; }; #endif // COMPETITOR_H The second cpp file: #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <cstdlib> #include <ctime> #include "Competitor.h" using namespace std; void Competitor::setName() { cin>>name; } string Competitor::getName() { return name; } void Competitor::spin() { srand(time(NULL)); direction = rand()%1+0; } void Competitor::move() { if(direction == 1) { markedSpots++; } else if(direction == 0 && markedSpots != 0) { markedSpots--; } } int Competitor::checkScore() { return markedSpots; } void Competitor::printResult() { if(direction == 1) { cout<<" is heading towards goal and has currently "<<markedSpots<<" markings."; } else if(direction == 0) { cout<<"\n"<<getName()<<" is heading towards start and has currently "<<markedSpots<<" markings."; } } The main cpp file: #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <cstdlib> #include <ctime> #include "Competitor.h" using namespace std; void inputAndSetNames(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps); void makeTwist(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps); void makeMove(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps); void showAll(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps); int winner(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps, int nrOfTwistPlaces); int main() { int nrOfTwistPlaces; int nrOfComps; int noWinner = -1; int laps = 0; cout<<"How many spinning places should there be? "; cin>>nrOfTwistPlaces; cout<<"How many competitors should there be? "; cin>>nrOfComps; Competitor * comps = new Competitor[nrOfComps]; inputAndSetNames(comps, nrOfComps); do { laps++; cout<<"\nSpin "<<laps<<":"; makeTwist(comps, nrOfComps); makeMove(comps, nrOfComps); showAll(comps, nrOfComps); }while(noWinner == -1); delete [] comps; return 0; } void inputAndSetNames(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps) { cout<<"Type in the names of the "<<nrOfComps<<" competitors:\n"; for(int i=0;i<nrOfComps;i++) { comps[i].setName(); } cout<<"\n"; } void makeTwist(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps) { for(int i=0;i<nrOfComps;i++) { comps[i].spin(); } } void makeMove(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps) { for(int i=0;i<nrOfComps;i++) { comps[i].move(); } } void showAll(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps) { for(int i=0;i<nrOfComps;i++) { comps[i].printResult(); } cout<<"\n\n"; system("pause"); } int winner(Competitor comps[],int nrOfComps, int nrOfTwistPlaces) { int end = 0; int score = 0; for(int i=0;i<nrOfComps;i++) { score = comps[i].checkScore(); if(score == nrOfTwistPlaces) { end = 1; } else end = -1; } return end; } I'd be grateful if you would point out other mistakes if you see any.Thanks in advance.

  • Why is Java EE 6 better than Spring ?

    - by arungupta
    Java EE 6 was released over 2 years ago and now there are 14 compliant application servers. In all my talks around the world, a question that is frequently asked is Why should I use Java EE 6 instead of Spring ? There are already several blogs covering that topic: Java EE wins over Spring by Bill Burke Why will I use Java EE instead of Spring in new Enterprise Java projects in 2012 ? by Kai Waehner (more discussion on TSS) Spring to Java EE migration (Part 1 and 2, 3 and 4 coming as well) by David Heffelfinger Spring to Java EE - A Migration Experience by Lincoln Baxter Migrating Spring to Java EE 6 by Bert Ertman and Paul Bakker at NLJUG Moving from Spring to Java EE 6 - The Age of Frameworks is Over at TSS Java EE vs Spring Shootout by Rohit Kelapure and Reza Rehman at JavaOne 2011 Java EE 6 and the Ewoks by Murat Yener Definite excuse to avoid Spring forever - Bert Ertman and Arun Gupta I will try to share my perspective in this blog. First of all, I'd like to start with a note: Thank you Spring framework for filling the interim gap and providing functionality that is now included in the mainstream Java EE 6 application servers. The Java EE platform has evolved over the years learning from frameworks like Spring and provides all the functionality to build an enterprise application. Thank you very much Spring framework! While Spring was revolutionary in its time and is still very popular and quite main stream in the same way Struts was circa 2003, it really is last generation's framework - some people are even calling it legacy. However my theory is "code is king". So my approach is to build/take a simple Hello World CRUD application in Java EE 6 and Spring and compare the deployable artifacts. I started looking at the official tutorial Developing a Spring Framework MVC Application Step-by-Step but it is using the older version 2.5. I wasn't able to find any updated version in the current 3.1 release. Next, I downloaded Spring Tool Suite and thought that would provide some template samples to get started. A least a quick search did not show any handy tutorials - either video or text-based. So I searched and found a link to their SVN repository at src.springframework.org/svn/spring-samples/. I tried the "mvc-basic" sample and the generated WAR file was 4.43 MB. While it was named a "basic" sample it seemed to come with 19 different libraries bundled but it was what I could find: ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-jsptags-1.0.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar And it is not even using any database! The app deployed fine on GlassFish 3.1.2 but the "@Controller Example" link did not work as it was missing the context root. With a bit of tweaking I could deploy the application and assume that the account got created because no error was displayed in the browser or server log. Next I generated the WAR for "mvc-ajax" and the 5.1 MB WAR had 20 JARs (1 removed, 2 added): ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-core-asl-1.6.4.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-mapper-asl-1.6.4.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.0.5.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar 2 more JARs for just doing Ajax. Anyway, deploying this application gave the following error: Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.codehaus.jackson.map.SerializationConfig.<init>(Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/ClassIntrospector;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/AnnotationIntrospector;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/introspect/VisibilityChecker;Lorg/codehaus/jackson/map/jsontype/SubtypeResolver;)V    at org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax.json.ConversionServiceAwareObjectMapper.<init>(ConversionServiceAwareObjectMapper.java:20)    at org.springframework.samples.mvc.ajax.json.JacksonConversionServiceConfigurer.postProcessAfterInitialization(JacksonConversionServiceConfigurer.java:40)    at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.AbstractAutowireCapableBeanFactory.applyBeanPostProcessorsAfterInitialization(AbstractAutowireCapableBeanFactory.java:407) Seems like some incorrect repos in the "pom.xml". Next one is "mvc-showcase" and the 6.49 MB WAR now has 28 JARs as shown below: ./WEB-INF/lib/aopalliance-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/aspectjrt-1.6.10.jar./WEB-INF/lib/commons-fileupload-1.2.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/commons-io-2.0.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/el-api-2.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-core-asl-1.8.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jackson-mapper-asl-1.8.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/javax.inject-1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jcl-over-slf4j-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jdom-1.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/joda-time-1.6.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-api-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/jstl-impl-1.2.jar./WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.16.jar./WEB-INF/lib/rome-1.0.0.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-aop-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-asm-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-beans-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-context-support-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-core-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-expression-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-web-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/spring-webmvc-3.1.0.RELEASE.jar./WEB-INF/lib/validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar The app at least deployed and showed results this time. But still no database! Next I tried building "jpetstore" and got the error: [ERROR] Failed to execute goal on project org.springframework.samples.jpetstore:Could not resolve dependencies for project org.springframework.samples:org.springframework.samples.jpetstore:war:1.0.0-SNAPSHOT: Failed to collect dependencies for [commons-fileupload:commons-fileupload:jar:1.2.1 (compile), org.apache.struts:com.springsource.org.apache.struts:jar:1.2.9 (compile), javax.xml.rpc:com.springsource.javax.xml.rpc:jar:1.1.0 (compile), org.apache.commons:com.springsource.org.apache.commons.dbcp:jar:1.2.2.osgi (compile), commons-io:commons-io:jar:1.3.2 (compile), hsqldb:hsqldb:jar:1.8.0.7 (compile), org.apache.tiles:tiles-core:jar:2.2.0 (compile), org.apache.tiles:tiles-jsp:jar:2.2.0 (compile), org.tuckey:urlrewritefilter:jar:3.1.0 (compile), org.springframework:spring-webmvc:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework:spring-orm:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework:spring-context-support:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT (compile), org.springframework.webflow:spring-js:jar:2.0.7.RELEASE (compile), org.apache.ibatis:com.springsource.com.ibatis:jar:2.3.4.726 (runtime), com.caucho:com.springsource.com.caucho:jar:3.2.1 (compile), org.apache.axis:com.springsource.org.apache.axis:jar:1.4.0 (compile), javax.wsdl:com.springsource.javax.wsdl:jar:1.6.1 (compile), javax.servlet:jstl:jar:1.2 (runtime), org.aspectj:aspectjweaver:jar:1.6.5 (compile), javax.servlet:servlet-api:jar:2.5 (provided), javax.servlet.jsp:jsp-api:jar:2.1 (provided), junit:junit:jar:4.6 (test)]: Failed to read artifact descriptor for org.springframework:spring-webmvc:jar:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT: Could not transfer artifact org.springframework:spring-webmvc:pom:3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT from/to JBoss repository (http://repository.jboss.com/maven2): Access denied to: http://repository.jboss.com/maven2/org/springframework/spring-webmvc/3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT/spring-webmvc-3.0.0.BUILD-SNAPSHOT.pom It appears the sample is broken - maybe I was pulling from the wrong repository - would be great if someone were to point me at a good target to use here. With a 50% hit on samples in this repository, I started searching through numerous blogs, most of which have either outdated information (using XML-heavy Spring 2.5), some piece of configuration (which is a typical "feature" of Spring) is missing, or too much complexity in the sample. I finally found this blog that worked like a charm. This blog creates a trivial Spring MVC 3 application using Hibernate and MySQL. This application performs CRUD operations on a single table in a database using typical Spring technologies.  I downloaded the sample code from the blog, deployed it on GlassFish 3.1.2 and could CRUD the "person" entity. The source code for this application can be downloaded here. More details on the application statistics below. And then I built a similar CRUD application in Java EE 6 using NetBeans wizards in a couple of minutes. The source code for the application can be downloaded here and the WAR here. The Spring Source Tool Suite may also offer similar wizard-driven capabilities but this blog focus primarily on comparing the runtimes. The lack of STS tutorials was slightly disappointing as well. NetBeans however has tons of text-based and video tutorials and tons of material even by the community. One more bit on the download size of tools bundle ... NetBeans 7.1.1 "All" is 211 MB (which includes GlassFish and Tomcat) Spring Tool Suite  2.9.0 is 347 MB (~ 65% bigger) This blog is not about the tooling comparison so back to the Java EE 6 version of the application .... In order to run the Java EE version on GlassFish, copy the MySQL Connector/J to glassfish3/glassfish/domains/domain1/lib/ext directory and create a JDBC connection pool and JDBC resource as: ./bin/asadmin create-jdbc-connection-pool --datasourceclassname \\ com.mysql.jdbc.jdbc2.optional.MysqlDataSource --restype \\ javax.sql.DataSource --property \\ portNumber=3306:user=mysql:password=mysql:databaseName=mydatabase \\ myConnectionPool ./bin/asadmin create-jdbc-resource --connectionpoolid myConnectionPool jdbc/myDataSource I generated WARs for the two projects and the table below highlights some differences between them: Java EE 6 Spring WAR File Size 0.021030 MB 10.87 MB (~516x) Number of files 20 53 (> 2.5x) Bundled libraries 0 36 Total size of libraries 0 12.1 MB XML files 3 5 LoC in XML files 50 (11 + 15 + 24) 129 (27 + 46 + 16 + 11 + 19) (~ 2.5x) Total .properties files 1 Bundle.properties 2 spring.properties, log4j.properties Cold Deploy 5,339 ms 11,724 ms Second Deploy 481 ms 6,261 ms Third Deploy 528 ms 5,484 ms Fourth Deploy 484 ms 5,576 ms Runtime memory ~73 MB ~101 MB Some points worth highlighting from the table ... 516x WAR file, 10x deployment time - With 12.1 MB of libraries (for a very basic application) bundled in your application, the WAR file size and the deployment time will naturally go higher. The WAR file for Spring-based application is 516x bigger and the deployment time is double during the first deployment and ~ 10x during subsequent deployments. The Java EE 6 application is fully portable and will run on any Java EE 6 compliant application server. 36 libraries in the WAR - There are 14 Java EE 6 compliant application servers today. Each of those servers provide all the functionality like transactions, dependency injection, security, persistence, etc typically required of an enterprise or web application. There is no need to bundle 36 libraries worth 12.1 MB for a trivial CRUD application. These 14 compliant application servers provide all the functionality baked in. Now you can also deploy these libraries in the container but then you don't get the "portability" offered by Spring in that case. Does your typical Spring deployment actually do that ? 3x LoC in XML - The number of XML files is about 1.6x and the LoC is ~ 2.5x. So much XML seems circa 2003 when the Java language had no annotations. The XML files can be further reduced, e.g. faces-config.xml can be replaced without providing i18n, but I just want to compare stock applications. Memory usage - Both the applications were deployed on default GlassFish 3.1.2 installation and any additional memory consumed as part of deployment/access was attributed to the application. This is by no means scientific but at least provides an initial ballpark. This area definitely needs more investigation. Another table that compares typical Java EE 6 compliant application servers and the custom-stack created for a Spring application ... Java EE 6 Spring Web Container ? 53 MB (tcServer 2.6.3 Developer Edition) Security ? 12 MB (Spring Security 3.1.0) Persistence ? 6.3 MB (Hibernate 4.1.0, required) Dependency Injection ? 5.3 MB (Framework) Web Services ? 796 KB (Spring WS 2.0.4) Messaging ? 3.4 MB (RabbitMQ Server 2.7.1) 936 KB (Java client 936) OSGi ? 1.3 MB (Spring OSGi 1.2.1) GlassFish and WebLogic (starting at 33 MB) 83.3 MB There are differentiating factors on both the stacks. But most of the functionality like security, persistence, and dependency injection is baked in a Java EE 6 compliant application server but needs to be individually managed and patched for a Spring application. This very quickly leads to a "stack explosion". The Java EE 6 servers are tested extensively on a variety of platforms in different combinations whereas a Spring application developer is responsible for testing with different JDKs, Operating Systems, Versions, Patches, etc. Oracle has both the leading OSS lightweight server with GlassFish and the leading enterprise Java server with WebLogic Server, both Java EE 6 and both with lightweight deployment options. The Web Container offered as part of a Java EE 6 application server not only deploys your enterprise Java applications but also provide operational management, diagnostics, and mission-critical capabilities required by your applications. The Java EE 6 platform also introduced the Web Profile which is a subset of the specifications from the entire platform. It is targeted at developers of modern web applications offering a reasonably complete stack, composed of standard APIs, and is capable out-of-the-box of addressing the needs of a large class of Web applications. As your applications grow, the stack can grow to the full Java EE 6 platform. The GlassFish Server Web Profile starting at 33MB (smaller than just the non-standard tcServer) provides most of the functionality typically required by a web application. WebLogic provides battle-tested functionality for a high throughput, low latency, and enterprise grade web application. No individual managing or patching, all tested and commercially supported for you! Note that VMWare does have a server, tcServer, but it is non-standard and not even certified to the level of the standard Web Profile most customers expect these days. Customers who choose this risk proprietary lock-in since VMWare does not seem to want to formally certify with either Java EE 6 Enterprise Platform or with Java EE 6 Web Profile but of course it would be great if they were to join the community and help their customers reduce the risk of deploying on VMWare software. Some more points to help you decide choose between Java EE 6 and Spring ... Freedom to choose container - There are 14 Java EE 6 compliant application servers today, with a variety of open source and commercial offerings. A Java EE 6 application can be deployed on any of those containers. So if you deployed your application on GlassFish today and would like to scale up with your demands then you can deploy the same application to WebLogic. And because of the portability of a Java EE 6 application, you can even take it a different vendor altogether. Spring requires a runtime which could be any of these app servers as well. But why use Spring when all the required functionality is already baked into the application server itself ? Spring also has a different definition of portability where they claim to bundle all the libraries in the WAR file and move to any application server. But we saw earlier how bloated that archive could be. The equivalent features in Spring runtime offerings (mainly tcServer) are not all open source, not as mature, and often require manual assembly.  Vendor choice - The Java EE 6 platform is created using the Java Community Process where all the big players like Oracle, IBM, RedHat, and Apache are conritbuting to make the platform successful. Each application server provides the basic Java EE 6 platform compliance and has its own competitive offerings. This allows you to choose an application server for deploying your Java EE 6 applications. If you are not happy with the support or feature of one vendor then you can move your application to a different vendor because of the portability promise offered by the platform. Spring is a set of products from a single company, one price book, one support organization, one sustaining organization, one sales organization, etc. If any of those cause a customer headache, where do you go ? Java EE, backed by multiple vendors, is a safer bet for those that are risk averse. Production support - With Spring, typically you need to get support from two vendors - VMWare and the container provider. With Java EE 6, all of this is typically provided by one vendor. For example, Oracle offers commercial support from systems, operating systems, JDK, application server, and applications on top of them. VMWare certainly offers complete production support but do you really want to put all your eggs in one basket ? Do you really use tcServer ? ;-) Maintainability - With Spring, you are likely building your own distribution with multiple JAR files, integrating, patching, versioning, etc of all those components. Spring's claim is that multiple JAR files allow you to go à la carte and pick the latest versions of different components. But who is responsible for testing whether all these versions work together ? Yep, you got it, its YOU! If something does not work, who patches and maintains the JARs ? Of course, you! Commercial support for such a configuration ? On your own! The Java EE application servers manage all of this for you and provide a well-tested and commercially supported bundle. While it is always good to realize that there is something new and improved that updates and replaces older frameworks like Spring, the good news is not only does a Java EE 6 container offer what is described here, most also will let you deploy and run your Spring applications on them while you go through an upgrade to a more modern architecture. End result, you get the best of both worlds - keeping your legacy investment but moving to a more agile, lightweight world of Java EE 6. A message to the Spring lovers ... The complexity in J2EE 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 led to the genesis of Spring but that was in 2004. This is 2012 and the name has changed to "Java EE 6" :-) There are tons of improvements in the Java EE platform to make it easy-to-use and powerful. Some examples: Adding @Stateless on a POJO makes it an EJB EJBs can be packaged in a WAR with no special packaging or deployment descriptors "web.xml" and "faces-config.xml" are optional in most of the common cases Typesafe dependency injection is now part of the Java EE platform Add @Path on a POJO allows you to publish it as a RESTful resource EJBs can be used as backing beans for Facelets-driven JSF pages providing full MVC Java EE 6 WARs are known to be kilobytes in size and deployed in milliseconds Tons of other simplifications in the platform and application servers So if you moved away from J2EE to Spring many years ago and have not looked at Java EE 6 (which has been out since Dec 2009) then you should definitely try it out. Just be at least aware of what other alternatives are available instead of restricting yourself to one stack. Here are some workshops and screencasts worth trying: screencast #37 shows how to build an end-to-end application using NetBeans screencast #36 builds the same application using Eclipse javaee-lab-feb2012.pdf is a 3-4 hours self-paced hands-on workshop that guides you to build a comprehensive Java EE 6 application using NetBeans Each city generally has a "spring cleanup" program every year. • Add Your Own Domain to Your WordPress.com Blog

    - by Matthew Guay
    Now that you’ve got a nice blog on WordPress.com, why not get your own domain to brand your site?  Here’s how you can easily register a new domain or move your existing domain to your WordPress site. By default, your free WordPress address is yourblog’sname.wordpress.com.  But whether this is a personal or a company blog, it can be nice to have your own domain to really brand your site and make it your own.  Or, if you already have another website and want to use WordPress as a blog for it, you could even add blog.yoursite.com or any other subdomain. Adding a domain to your WordPress.com is a paid upgrade; registering and mapping a new domain to your account costs $14.97 a year, while mapping a domain you already own to your WordPress blog costs $9.97 a year. Getting Started Login to your blog’s dashboard, click the arrow beside Upgrades in the sidebar, and select Domains. Enter the domain or subdomain you want to add to your site in the text box, and click Add domain to blog.   If you entered a new domain you want to register, WordPress will make sure the domain is available and then present you a registration form to register the domain.  Enter your information, and then click Register Domain.   Or, if you enter a domain that’s already registered, you will see the following prompt. If this domain is a domain you own, you can map it to WordPress.com.  Login to your domain registrar account and switch your nameserver to: NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COM Your DNS settings page for your domain may be different, depending on your registrar.  Here’s how our domain settings looked. Alternately, if you’re wanting to map a subdomain, such as blog.yoursite.com to your WordPress blog, create the following CNAME record on your domain register.  You may have to contact your domain registrar’s support to do this.  Substitute your subdomain, domain, and blog name when creating the record. subdomain.yourdomain.com. IN CNAME yourblog.wordpress.com. Once your settings are correct, click Try Again in your WordPress dashboard.  The DNS settings may take a while to update, but once WordPress can tell your DNS settings point to it, you will see the following confirmation screen.  Click Map Domain to add this domain to your WordPress blog. Now you’re ready to pay for your domain mapping or registration.  Depending on your purchase, the information and price shown may be different.  Here we’re mapping a domain we already have registered, so it costs $9.97.  Select your method of payment, enter your payment information or signin with your Paypal account, and continue as usual. Once your purchase is finished, you’ll be returned to the Domains page on WordPress.  Try going to your new domain, and make sure it opens your blog.  If it works, then click the bullet beside the new domain, and click Update Primary Domain.  Now, when people visit your WordPress site, they’ll see your new domain in the address bar.  You can still access your blog from your old yourname.wordpress.com address, but it will redirect to you new domain. Conclusion Having a personalized domain is a great way to make your blog more professional, while still taking advantage of the ease of use that WordPress.com offers.  And, if you have your own domain, you can easily move to your site traffic to a different hosting provider in the future if you need to.  The process is slightly complicated, but for $15/year we found this one of the best upgrades you could do to your WordPress.com blog. • understanding evaluation function

    - by mish
    I am developing a chess program. And have made use of an alpha beta algorithm and a static evaluation function. I have successfully implemented both but I want to improve the evaluation function by automatically tuning the weights assigned to its features. At this point am totally confused about the policy suitable for updating the weights of the function. One policy I have in mind is to check whether a move is good or bad before updating weights but I really know how to implement it. Thus I need ideas and pseudo code please.

  • Unity Locks Up in Live CD

    - by user212883
    I'm trying to run from the live USB to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Windows Machine (as I've grown a touch sick of Windows). However, whenever I boot into the LiveUSB session after a few moments the Unity desktop locks up (except the mouse pointer, which I can move). Is this something to do with the fact I've got an NVidia 580 GTX? I've heard of issues with Ubuntu and this card. I've also got an SSD, but given that it's booting from USB I shouldn't think that's an issue. System Specs: Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHZ Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z Z68 Socket 1155 RAM: 8GB DDR3 GPU: ASUS NVidia 580 GTX

  • Add Zune Desktop Player to Windows 7 Media Center

    - by DigitalGeekery
    Are you a Zune owner who prefers the Zune player for media playback? Today we’ll show you how to integrate the Zune player with WMC using Media Center Studio. You’ll need to download Media Center Studio and the Zune Desktop player software. (See download links below) Also, make sure you have Media Center closed. Some of the actions in Media Center Studio cannot be performed while WMC is open. Open Media Center Studio and click on the Start Menu tab at the top of the application.   Click the Application button. Here we will create an Entry Point for the Zune player so that we can add it to Media Center. Type in a name for your entry point in the title text box. This is the name that will appear under the tile when added to the Media Center start menu. Next, type in the path to the Zune player. By default this should be C:\Program Files\Zune\Zune.exe. Note: Be sure to use the original path, not a link to the desktop icon.   The Active image is the image that will appear on the tile in Media Center. If you wish to change the default image, click the Browse button and select a different image. Select Stop the currently playing media from the When launched do the following: dropdown list.  Otherwise, if you open Zune player from WMC while playing another form of media, that media will continue to play in the background.   Now we will choose a keystroke to use to exit the Zune player software and return to Media Center. Click on the the green plus (+) button. When prompted, press a key to use to the close the Zune player. Note: This may also work with your Media Center remote. You may want to set a keyboard keystroke as well as a button on your remote to close the program. You may not be able to set certain remote buttons to close the application. We found that the back arrow button worked well. You can also choose a keystroke to kill the program if desired. Be sure to save your work before exiting by clicking the Save button on the Home tab.   Next, select the Start Menu tab and click on the next to Entry points to reveal the available entry points. Find the Zune player tile in the Entry points area. We want to drag the tile out onto one of the menu strips on the start menu. We will drag ours onto the Extras Library strip. When you begin to drag the tile, green plus (+) signs will appear in between the tiles. When you’ve dragged the tile over any of the green plus signs, the  red “Move” label will turn to a blue “Move to” label. Now you can drop the tile into position. Save your changes and then close Media Center Studio. When you open Media Center, you should see your Zune tile on the start menu. When you select the Zune tile in WMC, Media Center will be minimized and Zune player will be launched. Now you can enjoy your media through the Zune player. When you close Zune player with the previously assigned keystroke or by clicking the “X” at the top right, Windows Media Center will be re-opened. Conclusion We found the Zune player worked with two different Media Center remotes that we tested. It was a times a little tricky at times to tell where you were when navigating through the Zune software with a remote, but it did work. In addition to managing your music, the Zune player is a nice way to add podcasts to your Media Center setup. We should also mention that you don’t need to actually own a Zune to install and use the Zune player software. Media Center Studio works on both Vista and Windows 7. We covered Media Center Studio a bit more in depth in a previous post on customizing the Windows Media Center start menu. Are you new to Zune player? Familiarize yourself a bit more by checking out some of our earlier posts like how to update your Zune player, and experiencing your music a whole new way with Zune for PC.   Downloads Zune Desktop Player download Media Center Studio download Similar Articles Productive Geek Tips How To Rip a Music CD in Windows 7 Media CenterIntegrate Hulu Desktop and Windows Media Center in Windows 7Using Netflix Watchnow in Windows Vista Media Center (Gmedia)Fixing When Windows Media Player Library Won’t Let You Add FilesBuilt-in Quick Launch Hotkeys in Windows Vista TouchFreeze Alternative in AutoHotkey The Icy Undertow Desktop Windows Home Server – Backup to LAN The Clear & Clean Desktop Use This Bookmarklet to Easily Get Albums Use AutoHotkey to Assign a Hotkey to a Specific Window Latest Software Reviews Tinyhacker Random Tips VMware Workstation 7 Acronis Online Backup DVDFab 6 Revo Uninstaller Pro Bypass Waiting Time On Customer Service Calls With Lucyphone MELTUP – "The Beginning Of US Currency Crisis And Hyperinflation" Enable or Disable the Task Manager Using TaskMgrED Explorer++ is a Worthy Windows Explorer Alternative Error Goblin Explains Windows Error Codes Twelve must-have Google Chrome plugins

  • Use a Windows 8-Like Task Manager in Windows 7, Vista, and XP

    - by Lori Kaufman
    One of the new features in Windows 8 is the improved Task Manager, which provides access to more information and settings. If you don’t want to upgrade, there is a way you can use a simple Windows 8-like Task Manager in Windows 7, Vista, or XP. The Windows 8 Metro Task Manager does not need to be installed. Simply download the .zip file (see the download link at the end of this article), extract the files, and double-click the Windows 8 Task Manager.exe file. A window displays a list of tasks currently running with the status of each task listed. To end a task, select the task in the list and click End Task. • Hekaton – SQL Server’s in-memory database engine

    - by Christian
    Microsoft have just gone public at the PASS Summit in Seattle about a new SQL Server engine that they’re working on which is optimized for high-memory servers – an in-memory OLTP database engine which is built-in to SQL Server rather than a separate entity.  This means that you can move just the performance critical parts of your database to Hekaton. The new engine really pushes the performance boundaries by eliminating as many instructions as possible: Main memory optimized tables which are decoupled from on-disk structures; Everything is lock and latch free; More work is pushed to compile time so your T-SQL code is compiled natively into low-level code. We’re already working with a customer on an early adoption program so expect to hear from us on what we learn about implementing it!   Christian Bolton - MCA, MCM, MVP Technical Director http://coeo.com - SQL Server Consulting & Managed Services
