  • What is a 'good number' of exceptions to implement for my library?

    I've always wondered how many different exception classes I should implement and throw for various pieces of my software. My particular development is usually C++/C#/Java related, but I believe this is a question for all languages. I want to understand what is a good number of different exceptions to throw, and what the developer community expect of a good library. The trade-offs I see include: More exception classes can allow very fine grain levels of error handling for API users (prone to user configuration or data errors, or files not being found) More exception classes allows error specific information to be embedded in the exception, rather than just a string message or error code More exception classes can mean more code maintenance More exception classes can mean the API is less approachable to users The scenarios I wish to understand exception usage in include: During 'configuration' stage, which might include loading files or setting parameters During an 'operation' type phase where the library might be running tasks and doing some work, perhaps in another thread Other patterns of error reporting without using exceptions, or less exceptions (as a comparison) might include: Less exceptions, but embedding an error code that can be used as a lookup Returning error codes and flags directly from functions (sometimes not possible from threads) Implemented an event or callback system upon error (avoids stack unwinding) As developers, what do you prefer to see? If there are MANY exceptions, do you bother error handling them separately anyway? Do you have a preference for error handling types depending on the stage of operation?

  • Very basic beginner Ruby question to do with elsif and ranges [migrated]

    I've been trying to get to grasps with Ruby (for all of an hour) and this is my first language. I've got the following code: var_comparison = 5 print "Please enter a number: " my_num = Integer(gets.chomp) if my_num > var_comparison print "You picked a number greater than 5!" elsif my_num < var_comparison print "You picked a number less than 5!" elsif my_num > 99 print "Your number is too large, man." else print "You picked the number 5!" end Clearly the interpreter has no way of distinguishing between accepting the rule 5 or 99. How do I make it so that any number between 6-99 returns "You picked a number greater than 5!", but a number 100 or greater returns "Your number is too large, man!"? Do I need to specifically state a range somehow? How would I best do that? Would it by the normal range methods e.g. if my_num 6..99 or if my_num.between(6..99) ?

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 1: Why Build Smart Phone Apps

    This is part 1 in a series of post based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. Intro Most of us already carry smartphones. We play games on them. We keep up with what is going on with our friends and our favorite teams. We take pictures of our kids at their events. But the question is if that is all they are good for. Many companies have aspects of their business that lend themselves to being performed by mobile devices. Some of them lean toward larger device such as tablets, but many can be executed on smartphones. This and the following articles will discuss some of the possible applications of smartphone technology for businesses, the platforms that are available and the considerations you need to make when building them. I'll take a look at some specific scenarios and wrap up with a couple of capabilities that are just emerging that can be used in the future. Why Build Enterprise Smartphone Applications So what are some of the ways that you can leverage smartphone technology to gain efficiency in your business or a clients business. There are a few major areas that I have seen mobile platforms being an advantage to. Your mobile sales force is a key candidate for leveraging smartphone apps.  They can visit clients in their retail location and place orders on site. It is a more personal approach which can gain you customer loyalty.  A sales person may also gather information about the way a client does business or who their target market is. This allows them you to focus marketing information or build customized support for your customer. You may also have need to track physical inventory in a store. This is something that has historically been done with laser scanners, but with the camera capabilities in today's phones and tablets it is possible to use more general multi-purpose devices.  This can save costs on both hardware and telecommunication contracts. Delivery verification is another area that historically has been the domain of specialized devices but can now be accomplished with smartphones.  This also reduces costs because it is also used for communicating with the driver and other operations.  Add to that the navigation capability of smartphones and you can see how the return on investment increases. Executives are always on the go. They spend most of their time in meetings and yet they need access to decision making information at their finger tips. With a smartphone app they can get alerts when major sales are closed or critical accounting process are completed that may need their attention. They can also answer questions by instantly pulling up BI reports. I have often heard operations support people say that they need things like VPN and RDP from their phones. If they can also have notifications of outages or critical support requests they can be react to situations without needing to be tied to their desks.   • Are there specific benefits to using XNA for 2D development if you don't plan on releasing on xbox/windows phone?

    I've been using XNA for a while to tinker with 2D game development, but I can't help but feel constrained by the content pipeline when targeting PC only. Things like no vector fonts or direct use of graphics files make it a pain while other frameworks do these things with no problem. I like XNA because it's robust and has a lot of support, but what are the specific benefits that I'd get developing exclusively for PC, if there are any at all?

  • What is the best practice for reading a large number of custom settings from a text file?

    So I have been looking through some code I wrote a few years ago for an economic simulation program. Each simulation has a large number of settings that can be saved to a file and later loaded back into the program to re-run the same/similar simulation. Some of the settings are optional or depend on what is being simulated. The code to read back the parameters is basically one very large switch statement (with a few nested switch statements). I was wondering if there is a better way to handle this situation. One line of the settings file might look like this: #RA:1,MT:DiscriminatoryPriceKDoubleAuction,OF:Demo Output.csv,QM:100,NT:5000,KP:0.5 //continues...   • Should I be worrying about limiting the number of textures in my game?

    I am working on a GUI in XNA 4.0 at the moment. (Before you point out that there are many GUIs already in existance, this is as much a learning exercise as a practical project). As you may know, controls and dialogs in Windows actually consist of a number of system-level windows. For instance, a dialog box may consist of a window for the whole dialog, a child window for the client area, another window (barely showing) for the frame, and so on. This makes detecting mouse hits and doing clipping relatively easy. I'd like to design my XNA GUI along the same lines, but using overlapping Textures instead of windows obviously. My question (yes, there's actually a question in this drivel) is: am I at risk of adversely affecting game performance and/or running low in resources if I get too nuts with the creating of many small textures? I haven't been able to find much information on how resource-tight the XNA environment actually is. I grew up in the days of 64K ram so I'm used to obsessing about resources and optimization. Anyway, any feedback appreciated.

  • How do I get any number of links to space evenly? [migrated]

    Alright, so here is the situation... Say I have a navbar for a site, and I allow users to change the number of links they want on this navbar. This means they could have 3, 5, 10, etc. What I want to do is make it so that if one link is up, it only takes up, say, 1/5th of the space on the navbar. If I weren't using borders, I might do something like: width: 18%; padding: 0 1%; However, I have two problems with this: 1) For 4 buttons, that's fine that it doesn't fill up the whole row. It would look ugly if the links were too wide... but when I have 6 or 7 buttons, it's got huge overflow! 2) Since I have borders, I can't use a percentage value for the borders or the widths, because I can't properly estimate how much of the percentage it will be. Now, I know I don't have to use percentage values, but what I would ideally prefer is that the first button is the smallest possible size necessary for all the other buttons to fit properly, meaning that if I have 950px and 6 links, the first link can be about 150px while the others are 160px... that's fine. I want all the other buttons on the navbar to be equally sized, regardless of how many links there are. I also need for it to accept a border... I figure the way to do this is to put a border in the nested div, so that way it doesn't effect the overall width of the button? This is all well and good, but I'm still plagued by the issue of not being able to design a dynamic site using the style I want if I can't get all the nav buttons to fit the width properly. Are there some js tricks I could use? I don't even know... Thanks

  • Why does "return ERROR" only work with exceptions?

    In the struts.xml I use: <result name="error">error</result> Then in my action I use: addActionError("ERROR RETURNED"); return ERROR; When I submit the form then it just goes to a blank page and does nothing. However, if I FORCE an exception to be thrown in the action then it goes to the error page and shows the ActionError message. So am I doing this wrong? If so, how should I tell struts to show an error page using "if statements" instead of relying solely on expensive try catches?     I try to make a requestform for our school. But if I transmit this form I get a "Internal Server Error". I searched but I found nothing like that.   • GMail Phone dialer - shortcut key for pushing the hash or pound key?

    I use the GMall 'Call phone' feature a lot, and the numeric keyboard pad works great for entering conference codes, but most conference call services want you "Enter your conference code followed by the 'hash' or 'pound' sign. So I end up typing the 10 digit conference code using the keyboard but then I have to use my mouse to push the # or hash sign. Is their a way to push the # with the keyboard?

    As I understand, the Android phone can only sync with Google (GMail, Google Calendar, etc.) out of the box. I can imagine corporate users having a problem with their data residing on Google's servers — despite their "do no evil" credo. Is there any Android application that lets you sync with the desktop (either Linux or Windows) or corporate server applications (think Exchange)?

  • I want to replace a number with successive numbers, starting at 1 and going up.

    I'm aware that this is something people can easily program, but I'm not familiar with those things, so I was hoping there was an easier solution. I've edited a large database of questions, including sorting, and ended up getting all the question ID's mixed up. I'm trying to do this in Notepad++, but any other suggestions are welcome. I'm wondering if there's a way to search for a string (ex. "Question[any number]") and replace the numbers with first 1, then 2, et.c. For clarification, this is how one question looks like: TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Question'][63] = "Acronyms: What does WTT stand for?"; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Answers'][63] = {"Want To Trade"}; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Category'][63] = 7; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Points'][63] = 1; TriviaBot_Questions[3]['Hints'][63] = {}; and the next question, as is now, is not followed by 64. It might be 245 or 1029, and regardless of which number it is, I want it replaced with "previous number + 1", basically.

Do they use a basic protocol like FTP and then check with a Google digital signature? I do not own an Android.   • How to disable Power off/Power on sound on Android phone? [closed]

    My Android phone (Android v.2.1) produces loud sound both before Power off and after Power on (boot) is being completed. I don't want to turn the sound off before reboot/powering it off and to turn sound on after reboot every time I'm restarting my phone. I just want to get rid of these sounds forever :-) How can I do this (maybe executing some script, changing some properties... preferably without rooting my phone)? Update: Thank you Christopher Orr! I've also found some information that partially allows to achieve what I'm looking for (on androidforums.com): "if you are going into SettingsSound & displayNotification ringtone that sets your notification tone for app updates, power on (rebooting) etc. If you want to change notification for messages you would have to go into messaging and then hit the menu key for notification option. You can do the same for email accounts as well." So I disabled Power on/off sounds (plus something else... but I didn't notice undesired side effect yet...) with built-in settings.

  • Android: New app not showing on a sprint phone...

    I uploaded my app to the Android Market last week and people have been purchasing it with no problems. My carrier is T-Mobile. As soon as I uploaded my app to the Market I got on my phone (Nexus One), searched for it, and there it was - instantly! (Is that because I have a google phone?) My friends G1 found it instantly also. BUT, another friend has a Sprint Moment phone and when he tried to search for it - it just wasn't there - like it didn't exist. I then called T-Mobile and Sprint representatives and found some information that I didn't know. The Sprint dude said that Sprint goes to some sort of massive Android Market Database and that's how Sprint knows about new apps and is then able to list them. New apps are not instantly shown on Sprint phones, you have to wait till their database updates to Android's database. At least that is what I thought they were trying to say to me. Has anyone else come across this issue and/or does anyone know how long Sprint takes to update their database for new Android apps? Do other carriers follow these methods?
