  The answer to that is that if you need more than 3 levels of indentation, you're screwed anyway, and should fix your program. What can I deduct from this quote ? On top of the fact that too long methods are hard to maintain, are they hard or impossible to optimize for the compiler ? I don't really understand if this quote encourages better coding practice or is really a mathematical/algorithmic sort of truth... I also read in some C++ optimizing guide that dividing up a program into more function improves its design is a common thing taught at school, but it should be not done too much, since it can turn into a lot of JMP calls (even if the compiler can inline some methods by itself).

• Installing g77 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit)

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. I m struggling a lot to fix this.

• Root directory of the kernel

  A newbie here. I am trying to set up Eclipse for Linux Kernel Programming. The guide says set the project location as the root directory of the kernel. Where's the root directory of the kernel now? According to Linux file hierarchy system, it lists /lib as the root directory for shared libraries and kernel modules. I also see /lib32 and /lib64. However, I tried proceeding selecting /lib as the location and eclipse doesn't allow me to create the project.

• Single Full Name field in registration form user submits only first what to enter in my backend as last?

  On a registration form I have a single input called Full Name. The strings are parsed with http://code.google.com/p/php-name-parser/ so if a person enters their full name middle or any quantity of strings it's handled just fine and the app creates the user in a billing system with it's API. The form validates and checks for two strings in the field otherwise it won't post. I'd like to remove this validation but a last name is required by the API. You cannot post an empty last name to the API. Users are signing up for a trial so I don't want them having to deal with many form fields. The only place the last name shows up visible to the user is in their account settings page. If they end their trial and start a paid plan they'd have to enter their billing details which asks with two fields for their First, Last, and other billing information. What is an alternative to submitting "Doe", "Default", "Empty" in place of them not filling in their last name?

• No sound after updating from 11.10 to 12.04

  Hi I updated a friends computer from 11.10 to 12.04 and the sound stopped working in the built-in speakers. The computer is a Sony Vaio PCG-2J1L. • Should we design programs to randomly kill themselves?

  In a nutshell, should we design death into our programs, processes, and threads at a low level, for the good of the overall system? Failures happen. Processes die. We plan for disaster and occasionally recover from it. But we rarely design and implement unpredictable program death. We hope that our services' uptimes are as long as we care to keep them running. A macro-example of this concept is Netflix's Chaos Monkey, which randomly terminates AWS instances in some scenarios. They claim that this has helped them discover problems and build more redundant systems. What I'm talking about is lower level. The idea is for traditionally long-running processes to randomly exit. This should force redundancy into the design and ultimately produce more resilient systems. Does this concept already have a name? Is it already being used in the industry?

• First set up of a server need some help

• Installed Ubuntu using WUBI due to lack of CD Drive

  I have installed 12.04 via WUBI because my computer does not have a CD Drive. Is there any way that I can delete Windows 7 from my computer and use the whole HD for Ubuntu? I ask this question because for one reason or another I cannot boot from a boot-able USB stick (either in Windows or Ubuntu, however the USB port works because I am able to use my cell phone's tethering plan using all the USB ports to connect to the Internet). Edit: Just found out the problem. Eee PC Model 1018p's do not boot from any format other than FAT and FAT16 and not FAT32.

• Do 3d assets cost a lot more than 2d?

  I'm planning to create a game on my own and will most likely hire an artist in the future. I just want to know if making a game in 2d will a lot cheaper than making it on 3d? Here's my plan: If it will be a 2d game.. I'll probably make a platform game. More like a Braid level of graphics. If it will be a 3d game.. Closest of graphics I'll ask for will be far cry 1 or if possible oblivion. So any thoughts? I'm funding all of it on my own.   Hi, What are the best free CMSs or CMS plugins or ERPs or any other free tools available for developing a hospital management system? I want to develop it for a children's hospital run by my father. The hospital is small with two doctors. Currently, everything is done manually on paper. The main entities who will be using the system are: Receptionist, the two doctors, chemist and the medical laboratorist. They will use it majorly for keeping the records of the patient. The patients would not be interacting with the system directly. The system needs to be user friendly and should be easy to learn. I was thinking to develop such a system using a CMS or an ERP or any other free tool. I have used wordpress/drupal in past but never used an ERP. • Do I have to release the code of a MIT licensed software running a GPL library?

  Lets say I'm using Node-Webkit, an MIT licensed app runtime. Now, let's say I decide to include a Javascript library which is GPL licensed: while I do not modify the downloaded JS file, I do write my own code making use of the library's functions. I plan to sell the final obfuscated executable and I'm wondering: what's the final license of the complete software? Do I only have to release the GPL library or does the GPL license apply for all the code I wrote? What happens to Node-Webkit's MIT license?

• Trouble setting up openVPN/VPN

  I'm having trouble setting up a VPN on my VPS that's running Ubuntu 11.04. I'm been following this guide http://tipupdate.com/how-to-install-openvpn-on-ubuntu-vps/ I'm able to start the VPN, but the command it tell's me to do after I start the VPN doesn't work for me. I've tried it about 5 different way's and i'll show you what i get now. :~# iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables: No chain/target/match by that name. :~# iptables -A FORWARD state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT Bad argument `state' Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information. I just can't get that to work and the VPN doesn't seem to be workign with out it. Can someone help me fix this?

It promised to be a gamechanger, providing query visibility at a runtime and easily extractable information about heavy iterators in execution plan. So it has been announced but missing. Now in CTP2 it is finally here. So, singing one of my favorite Queen songs “… It finally happened - I’m slightly mad…” , I tried to observe query execution data at a runtime. And… nothing.   I already have php and apache installed on my ubuntu 12.04. I want to install codeigniter which is a php framework. I followed the link: How to install CodeIgniter? . But its too complicated and also I do not want to create symlinks and mount and all the stuff mentioned there. Installation instruction are also on the codegniter site i.e. http://ellislab.com/codeigniter/user-guide/installation/index.html , but those are not elaborative and little confusing. I will be very thankful if anyone can please provide a simple way to install codeigniter with apache server.

It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

• Visual C++, CMap object save to blob column

  I have a MFC CMap object, each object stores 160K~ entries of long data. I need to store it on Oracle SQL. we decided to save it as a blob. since we do not want to make additional table. we also thought about saving it as local file and point the SQL column to that file, but we rather just keep it as blob on the server and clear the table every couple of weeks. The table has a sequential key as ID, and 2 column of time. I need to add the blob column in order to store on every row that CMap. Can you recommend a guide to do so (read/write Map to blob or maybe a clob) ? Thanks.

• Disabling eth0 Module on a Macbook Aluminum

  The Ubuntu page for my device states the following at the bottom (Known Issues) PowerTOP reports that the module for the 10/100/1000 interface wakes the processor 100+x/sec, accounting for 50% of wakeups on an idle system. This dramatically shortens battery life. One potential solution is to unload this module if you only use wireless. I only use wireless, but I could not find instructions to "unload the module". I have a feeling if I try something related to this, but not the same, battery life will not improve and my eth0 won't work. Anyone have a good guide on this?

• configuring separate X screens instead of TwinView

  My Sony Vaio laptop is connected to an external Samsung monitor and my nVidia driver is configured in TwinView mode. Everything is OK with this, however, I can not adjust my displays individually so at the moment my external display is a little bit darker which disturbs me a lot. I tried the Separate X Screen mode but after restart, my laptop display was white with a black x sign mouse pointer and the external display normal desktop. Is it a bug or something I missed? The idea is that using Separate X Screen mode, I could adjust my displays individually. I would really appreciate someone would guide me out of this situation. Thanx in adv..

  Hi, I am new to PHP (Have good j2EE and ASP .net experience) and now want to kick start developing a simple website (A database connection and simple inserts is the max technical stuff i plan right now). I have signed up at zymic for a free hosting (MySql included). Now please suggest me: the available IDEs for developing on PHP on windows OS and any beginner level resources that you have come across, for a .net/java guy which may help me to quickly figure out the differences would you advice me to go for frameworks like joomla etc as a beginner? or is it better i start exploring these after im familiar with PHP?
