• Error Building Gem

  I tried to install the following gem: http://github.com/maxjustus/sinatra-authentication on Windows 7 running Ruby 1.9 from the One-Click Installer. I got the following error: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Joel>gem install sinatra-authentication Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing sinatra-authentication: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby- 0.7.5 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby-0.7.5/ext/gem_mak e.out I looked everywehere online, tried to install earlier versions, and attempted a manual install without success (it gave me a stack too deep error). I suspect there are problems with the yajl-ruby gem (http://github.com/brianmario/yajl-ruby), a dependency? (I think) The logs in gem_make.out show: C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Do you have any idea as to how to solve this? Thanks!

• Understanding how rpmbuild works

  Hi, For my work, I have to create a documentation on "How-to create a RPM package on Red Hat 5". I'm used to Debian and it's derivative (Ubuntu, and so on) and thus to Debian packages (aka. .deb files). It seems that the RPM logic is quite different from what I know already and I am having some issues understanding the "RPM logic". From what I read, it seems that ones need to be root to create a RPM package. While I understand why root could be required to install a package, I still don't understand why elevated privileges should be needed to just create one. If I try to create a RPM package as a user, changing the buildroot it fails on the %installstep because I don't have permission to write files into /usr/bin. Fair enough but... why does he want to copy my files into /usr/bin at this step ?! I just want to create the package, not install it ! I'm sure I'm missing something here. Is there anyone who could give me at least a basic understanding of how rpmbuild works and why ? Thank you very much !

• Having trouble setting up API call using array of parameters

  I am building a class to send API calls to Rapidshare and return the results of said call. • Guaranteed way to find the ildasm.exe and ilasm.exe files regardless of .NET version/environment?

  Is there a way to programmatically get the FileInfo/Path of the ildasm.exe/ilasm.exe executables? I'm attempting to decompile and recompile a dll/exe file appropriately after making some alterations to it (I'm guessing PostSharp does something similar to alter the IL after the compilation). I found a blog post that pointed to: var pfDir = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolders.ProgramFiles)); var sdkDir = Path.Combine(pfDir, @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin"); ... However, when I ran this code the directory did not exist (mainly because my SDK version is 7.1), so on my local machine the correct path is @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\bin". How do I ensure I can actually find the ildasm.exe? Similarly, I found another blog post on how to get access to ilasm.exe as: string windows = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.System); string fwork = Path.Combine(windows, @"..\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727"); ... While this works, I noticed that I have Framework and Framework64, and within Framework itself I have all of the versions up to v4.0.30319 (same with Framework64). So, how do I know which one to use? Should it be based on the .NET Framework version I'm targetting? Summary: How do I appropriately guarantee to find the correct path to ildasm.exe? How do I appropriately select the correct ilasm.exe to compile?

  The section Last links in the chain: Stashing and the reflog in http://ftp.newartisans.com/pub/git.from.bottom.up.pdf recommends stashing often to take snapshots of your work in progress. The author goes as far as recommending that you can use a cron job to stash your work regularly, without having to do a stash manually. The beauty of stash is that it lets you apply unobtrusive version control to your working process itself: namely, the various stages of your working tree from day to day. You can even use stash on a regular basis if you like, with something like the following snapshot script: $ cat <<EOF > /usr/local/bin/git-snapshot #!/bin/sh git stash && git stash apply EOF $ chmod +x $_ $ git snapshot There’s no reason you couldn’t run this from a cron job every hour, along with running the reflog expire command every week or month. The problem with this approach is: If there are no changes to your working copy, the "git stash apply" will cause your last stash to be applied over your working copy. There could be race conditions between when the cron job executes and the user working on the working copy. For example, "git stash" runs, then the user opens the file, then the script's "git stash apply" is executed. Does anybody have suggestions for making this automatic stashing work more reliably?

  I found some similar problems here on SO, but none seem to match my case (sorry if I overlooked). Here's my problem: I installed oauth-plugin gem to ruby gems dir, but trying to use it in rails app tells me that it's not being found.   Although I have seen dozens of forum questions relating to "Could not load type", none of the advice in them seemed to apply to my situation. I wrote a new web application using aspx.net VB 2005. It is tiny, with just 2 pages, 1 of which has no code-behind. It runs aok in the IDE but when I installed it on my pc (and also when installed on the production server), and tried to run it this error came up: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request.   I am trying to make my first AJAX Control and I get error. I probbly missed some steps but I cann't find them eventhough I read many tutorials, probbly since I am new in AJAX, so I need to be guided step-by-step. These are the steps I've already done: Downloading AJAX ToolKit. Adding These Controls to the ToolBox. creating new ASP.NET Website (I heard about AJAX-Enabled Option, but I dont have this option) Adding a AJAX Tool. And thats it. • How to stop tcpdump remotely using expect from a new telnet session

  I am trying to stop the tcpdump command from running on a remote terminal. If I telnet to the terminal, start tcpdump, and then send a ^c, tcpdump stops with no issues. However if I telnet to the same terminal, start tcpdump, and then exit the telnet session, when I reconnect to the same telnet session I am unable to stop tcpdump via a ^c. When I do this instead of stopping tcpdump it seems that it just quits the telnet session and tcpdump continues to run on the remote terminal. I provided my script below. Is it possible to get around this class-path size bug?

  I have a perl script (or any executable) E which will take a file foo.xml and write a file foo.txt. I use a Beowulf cluster to run E for a large number of XML files, but I'd like to write a simple job server script in shell (bash) which doesn't overwrite existing txt files. To clarify: so the simplest way to do what i'm asking is (in pseudocode) for i in `/bin/ls *.xml` do replace xml suffix with txt if [that file exists] add to whatsleft list end done

Because the value will be null.   I am trying to build Linux From Scratch, and now I am at chapter 5.4, which tells me how to build Binutils.   I want to share some class source files between two projects in Visual Studio 2008. I can't create a project for the common parts and reference it (see my comment if you are curious to why). I've managed to share some source files, but it could be a lot more neat. I've created a test solution called Commonality. The Solution Explorer of the Commonality solution which contains project One and Two: What I like: All class files under the Common folder of project One are automatically added to project Two by linking. It's mostly the same as if I would have chosen Add / Existing Item... : Add As Link on each new class source file. It's clear that these files have been linked in. The shortcut arrow symbol is marking each file icon. What I do not like: The file and folder tree structure under Common of project One isn't included. It's all flat. The linked source files are shown under the project root of project Two. It would look much less cluttered if they were located under Common like in project One. All I need is to build some cubes and let the end user play with dimensions, filter data, sort, etc, and once it's done being able to export it to excel... I've heard that many solutions available do have many restrictions when it comes to there community version. • Why is the Clojure Hello World program so slow compared to Java and Python?

  Hi all, I'm reading "Programming Clojure" and I was comparing some languages I use for some simple code. I noticed that the clojure implementations were the slowest in each case. For instance, Python - hello.py def hello_world(name): print "Hello, %s" % name hello_world("world") and result, $ time python hello.py Hello, world real 0m0.027s user 0m0.013s sys 0m0.014s Java - hello.java import java.io.*; public class hello { public static void hello_world(String name) { System.out.println("Hello, " + name); } public static void main(String[] args) { hello_world("world"); } } and result, $ time java hello Hello, world real 0m0.324s user 0m0.296s sys 0m0.065s and finally, Clojure - hellofun.clj (defn hello-world [username] (println (format "Hello, %s" username))) (hello-world "world") and results, $ time clj hellofun.clj Hello, world real 0m1.418s user 0m1.649s sys 0m0.154s Thats a whole, garangutan 1.4 seconds! Does anyone have pointers on what the cause of this could be? Is Clojure really that slow, or are there JVM tricks et al that need to be used in order to speed up execution? More importantly - isn't this huge difference in performance going to be an issue at some point? (I mean, lets say I was using Clojure for a production system - the gain I get in using lisp seems completely offset by the performance issues I can see here). The machine used here is a 2007 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, a 2.16Ghz Intel C2D and 2G DDR2 SDRAM.
