• Failure retrieving contents of directory

  Currently I have a couple of websites. My problem is that if I login on 1 specific domain with any of my programs (using notepadd++, FileZilla and Netbeans) the program stops at the content listing. I had it correctly running, (I'm working on a project on this domain for more than a year now) and suddenly I broke it somehow. This only happens on 1 specific domain, all other domains (from other hosts) are working. My colleague (next to me with same ip address) is able to login on this domain. Notepadd++ says: Failure retrieving contents of directory Filezilla says: Failed to retrieve directory listing Netbean popups: Upload files on save failed. (Because I have the setting upload on save enabled.) What I tried: First I thought it's my firewall, I disabled firewall but no result. Also notice that all other domain are working. Maby a blacklist with my ip address? No my colleague has the same ip address. Could anyone help me on this? • PowerShell Script to Create PowerShell Profile

  Utilizing a PowerShell profile can help any PowerShell user save time getting up and running with their work.  For those unfamiliar a PowerShell profile is a file you can store any PowerShell commands that you want to run when you fire up a PowerShell console (or ISE.)  In my typical profiles (example here) I load assemblies (like SharePoint 2007 DLL), set aliases, set environment variable values (such as max history), and perform other general customizations to make my work easier.  Below is a sample script that will check to see if a PowerShell profile (Console or ISE) exists and create it if not found.  The .ps1 script file version can also be downloaded from my SkyDrive here. Note: if downloading the .ps1 file, be sure you have enabled unsigned scripts to run on your machine as I have not signed mine.   $folderExists = test-path -path $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell if($folderExists -eq $false) { new-item -type directory -path $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell > $null echo "Containing folder for profile created at: $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell" }   $profileExists = test-path -path $profile if($profileExists -eq $false) { new-item -type file -path $profile > $null echo "Profile file created at: $profile" }     A few things to note while going through the above script. $Env:UserProfile represents the personal user folder (c:\documents and settings…. on older OSes like XP and c:\Users… on Win 7) so it adapts to whichever OS you are running but was tested against Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. “ > $null” sends the command to a null stream.  Essentially this is equivalent to DOS scripting of “@ECHO OFF” by suppressing echoing the command just run, but only for the specific command it is appended to.  I haven’t yet found a better way to accomplish command suppression, but this is definitely not required for the script to work. $profile represent a standard variable to the file path of the profile file.  It is dynamic based on whether you are running PowerShell Console or ISE.   Conclusion     In less than two weeks (Apr. 10th to be exact) I’ll be heading down to SharePoint Saturday Charlotte (SPSCLT) to give two presentations on using PowerShell with SharePoint.  Since I’ll be prepping a lot of material for PowerShell I thought it only appropriate to pass along this nice little script I recently created.  If you’ve never used a PowerShell profile this is a great chance to start using one.  If you’ve been using a profile before, perhaps you learned a trick or two to add to your toolbox.  For those of you in the Charlotte, NC area sign up for the SharePoint Saturday and see some great content and community with great folks.         -Frog Out

• Oracle WebCenter Portal: Pagelet Producer – What’s New in 11.1.1.6.0 Release

  Igor Plyakov, Sr. Principal Product Marketing Manager is back to share what's new in Oracle WebCenter Portal: Pagelet Producer. In February 2012 Oracle released 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.6.0) for WebCenter Portal. Pagelet Producer (aka Ensemble) that came out with this release added support for several new capabilities that are described in this post. As of 11.1.1.5.0 release the Pagelet Producer can expose WSRP and JPDK portlets as pagelets that can then be consumed in any portal or any third-party application that does not have a WSRP consumer. Now Pagelet Producer team is working on simplifying use of pagelets in WebCenter Sites. To expose WSRP portlets a new Producer should be registered with Pagelet Producer which can be done using Enterprise Manager, WLST or the Pagelet Producer Administration Console (for details see Section 25.9 of Administrator’s Guide for Oracle WebCenter Portal). If the producer requires authentication, Pagelet Producer allows you to select and use one of standard WSS token profiles.  After registration is finished a new resource is created and automatically populated with pagelets that represent the portlets associated with the WSRP endpoint.  For 11.1.1.6.0 release we completed extensive testing of consuming all WebCenter Services that are exposed as WSRP portlets by E2.0 Producer and delivery them as pagelets to WebCenter Interaction portal. In Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 release we added OpenSocial container that allows consuming gadgets from other OpenSocial containers, e.g. iGoogle, and expose them as pagelets. You can also use Pagelet Producer to host OpenSocial gadgets that could leverage OpenSocial APIs that it supports – People, Activities, Appdata and Pub-Sub features. Note that People and Activities expose the People Connections and Activity Stream from WebCenter Portal, i.e. to use these features Pagelet Producer requires connection to WebCenter Portal schema. Pub-Sub allows leveraging OpenAJAX Hub API for inter-gadget communication. In addition to these major new additions in Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 release we also extended several functional modules: The Clipping module was extended to support clipping of multiple regions on web resource page and then re-assembly of these separately clipped regions into a single pagelet. The auto-login feature can now be applied to web resources protected with Kerberos authentication; you would find this new functionality handy for consuming SharePoint web parts The logging module now supports full HTTP traffic between the Pagelet Producer and proxied web resource. At last, as the rest of WebCenter Portal stack the Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 can run on IBM WebSphere Application Server.

I then bumped on to a PostScript interpreter called GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/) and then the solution starts to get clearer and clearer.I managed to achieve a solution (maybe not be the simplest but efficient enough to achieve the least-maintenance-least-components goal) in 3-simple steps:Install GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/download/) - this is an open-source PostScript and PDF interpreter. Printing directly using GhostScript only produces grayscale prints using the laserjet generic driver unless you save as BMP image and then interpret the colours using the imageInstall GSView (http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/)- this is a GhostScript add-on to make it easier to directly print to a Windows printer. GSPrint automates the above  PDF -> BMP -> Printer Driver.Run the GSPrint command from SQL Server agent or Windows Service:"C:\Program Files\Ghostgum\gsview\gsprint.exe" -color -landscape -all -printer "printername" "C:\temp\print.pdf"Command line options are here: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/gsprint.htmAnother lesson learned is, since you are calling the script from the Service Account, it will not necessarily have the Printer mapped in its Windows profile (if it even has one). The workaround to this is by adding a local printer as you normally would and then map this printer to the network printer. Note that you may need to install the Printer Driver locally in the server.So, that's it! There are many ways to achieve a solution. The key thing is how you provide the smartest solution!

• Adding an expression based image in a client report definition file (RDLC)

  In previous posts, I showed you how to create a report using Visual Studio 2010 and how to add a hyperlink to the report.  In this post, I show you how to add an expression based image to each row of the report. This similar to displaying a checkbox column for Boolean values.  A sample project is attached to the bottom of this post. To start off, download the project we created earlier from here.  The report we created had a “Discontinued” column of type Boolean. We are going to change it to display an “available” icon or “unavailable” icon based on the “Discontinued” row value.    Load the project and double click on Products.rdlc. With the report design surface active, you will see the “Report Data” tool window. Right click on the Images folder and select “Add Image..”   Add the available_icon.png and discontinued_icon.png images (the sample project at the end of this post has the icon png files)    You can see the images we added in the “Report Data” tool window.   Drag and drop the available_icon into the “Discontinued” column row (not the header) We get a dialog box which allows us to set the image properties. We will add an expression that specifies the image to display based the “Discontinued” value from the Product table. Click on the expression (fx) button.   Add the following expression : = IIf(Fields!Discontinued.Value = True, “discontinued_icon”, “available_icon”)   Save and exit all dialog boxes. In the report design surface, resize the column header and change the text from “Discontinued” to “In Production”.   (Optional) Right click on the image cell (not header) , go to “Image Properties..” and offset it by 5pt from the left. (Optional) Change the border color since it is not set by default for image columns. We are done adding our image column! Compile the application and run it. You will see that the “In Production” column has red ‘x’ icons for discontinued products. • Using Pandora in Boxee

  Boxee is a very cool multimedia app that lets you access and stream your digital media in many different ways. There’s also a lot of extra apps included with it, and today we take a look at the Pandora application in Boxee. Pandora has been a favorite free music streaming service that’s been around for some time now. Though there are new services like Grooveshark and Spotify that are competing, Pandora is still a reliable choice. It’s now included in Boxee, and here we take a look at using it. Create a Pandora Account If you don’t already have a Pandora account, you can easily create one at their website (link below). Pandora in Boxee To start using Pandora from Boxee, launch Boxee and from the main menu select Apps. Now from the My Apps section select Pandora. When the Pandora app menu comes up, select Start. Now you need to log into your Pandora account. After signing in you can starting listening to your stations, viewing artist info, and cover art. All while enjoying some cool visuals in the background. From the controls at the top you can control playback, skip songs, control volume, get information on why a song was picked, and give a song a thumbs up or down. Of course you can also pull up your stations and switch between them and add more. The same features you’ve come to expect from Pandora are available. One thing we noticed missing is not being able to click on the band or artist to get additional information about them –which you can do on the Pandora site and desktop app. But that isn’t a deal breaker by any means, and we’re hoping the feature will be added in the future. Then while you’re checking out other apps, shows, and setting within Boxee, the cool visuals continue and the songs from you stations keep playing. Conclusion Pandora is a great streaming music service and a welcome edition to Boxee. If you’re a fan of Pandora now you can listen to it on your home theater system. Latest improvements in the configuration API enables developers to quickly get started and build a working simple system that uses messaging infrastructure. The goal of this session is to give a jump start with the framework, introduce basic concepts such as message handlers, Sagas, Pub/Sub, Generic Host and also create a working demo application that uses publish/subscribe messaging. The content of the session is addressed to developers that are interested in learning how to get started using nServiceBus in order to design and build distributed systems. Bio: Bernard Kowalski is currently a Software Developer at Microdesk, one of Autodesk's leading partners in providing variety of Geospatial and Computer-Aided Design solutions. Bernard has experience developing .NET framework-based applications utilizing Windows Forms, Windows Services, ASP.NET MVC, and Web services. In a recent project, Bernard architected and implemented a distributed system based on SOA principles using an open source implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus. • Angry Bird Makers: Developers Love iOS Over Android To Make Money

  These days web is buzzing with Apple iOS vs Google Android debates. Recently Fortune predicted that Android is going to explode in 2011 and it will surpass Apple’s iOS market share. Yes Android is set to spread its wings across all the devices – smartphones, TVs, set top boxes, in car entertainment devices, what not. Think of any device that requires operating system, Android can be used. On the other than iOS is only available on very selective Apple devices – iPods, iPhones and iPads. When it comes to the count of devices running on a specific OS, Android will be far ahead of iOS but when you consider a quality of devices and providing an eco system for business to make money iOS seems to be the winner. That is what experts and analysts are saysing. Here is an excerpt from Peter Vesterbacka, maker of the popular Angry Birds game, interview to Tech N Marketing site.  He says Apple will be the number one platform for a long time from a developer perspective, they have gotten so many things right. And they know what they are doing and they call the shots. Android is growing, but it’s also growing complexity at the same time. Device fragmentation not the issue, but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem. So many different shops, so many different models. The carriers messing with the experience again. Open but not really open, a very Google centric ecosystem. And paid content just doesn’t work on Android. Peter says developer prefer iOS over Android as it’s not very easy to make money on Android market. That’s why they released a free version of Angry Birds game with ads support for Android devices. Free is the way to go with Android. Nobody has been successful selling content on Android. We will offer a way to remove the ads by paying for the app, but we don’t expect that to be a huge revenue stream. • Hadoop growing pains

  This post is not going to be about SQL Server. I have been reading recently more and more about “Big Data” – very catchy term that describes untamed increase of the data that mankind is producing each day and the struggle to capture the meaning of these data. Ten years ago, and perhaps even three years ago this need was not so recognized. Increasing number of smartphones and discernable trend of mainstream Internet traffic moving to the smartphone generated one means that there is bigger and bigger stream of information that has to be stored, transformed, analysed and perhaps monetized. The nature of this traffic makes if very difficult to wrap it into boundaries of relational database engines. The amount of data makes it near to impossible to process them in relational databases within reasonable time. This is where ‘cloud’ technologies come to play. I just read a good article about the growing pains of Hadoop, which became one of the leading players on distributed processing arena within last year or two. Toby Baer concludes in it that lack of enterprise ready toolsets hinders Hadoop’s apprehension in the enterprise world. While this is true, something else drew my attention. According to the article there are already about half of a dozen of commercially supported distributions of Hadoop. For me, who has not been involved into intricacies of open-source world, this is quite interesting observation. On one hand, it is good that there is competition as it is beneficial in the end to the customer. On the other hand, the customer is faced with difficulty of choosing the right distribution. In future, when Hadoop distributions fork even more, this choice will be even harder. The distributions will have overlapping sets of features, yet will be quite incompatible with each other. I suppose it will take a few years until leaders emerge and the market will begin to resemble what we see in Linux world. There are myriads of distributions, but only few are acknowledged by the industry as enterprise standard. Others are honed by bearded individuals with too much time to spend.   In October 2011 I wrote a blog post entitled ObjectStorageHelper<T> – A WinRT utility for Windows 8 where I introduced a little utility class called ObjectStorageHelper<T> that I had been working on while noodling around on the Developer Preview of Windows 8. ObjectStorageHelper<T> makes it easy for anyone building apps for Windows 8 to save data to files. How easy?   “Big Data” offers the potential for organizations to revolutionize their operations. • Say goodbye to System.Reflection.Emit (any dynamic proxy generation) in WinRT

  tl;dr - Forget any form of dynamic code emitting in Metro-style. It's not going to happen.Over the past week or so I've been trying to get Moq (the popular open source TDD mocking framework) to work on WinRT. Irritatingly, the day before Release Preview was released it was actually working on Consumer Preview. However in Release Preview (RP) the System.Reflection.Emit namespace is gone. Forget any form of dynamic code generation and/or MSIL injection.This kills off any project based on the popular Castle Project Dynamic Proxy component, of which Moq is one example. You can at this point in time not perform any form of mocking using dynamic injection in your Metro-style unit testing endeavours.So let me take you through my journey on this, so that other's don't have to...The headline fact is that you cannot load any assembly that you create at runtime. WinRT supports one Assembly.Load method, and that takes the name of an assembly. That has to be placed within the deployment folder of your app. You cannot give it a filename, or stream. The methods are there, but private. Try to invoke them using Reflection and you'll be met with a caspol exception.You can, in theory, use Rotor to replace SRE. It's all there, but again, you can't load anything you create.You can't write to your deployment folder from within your Metro-style app. But, can you use another service on the machine to move a file that you create into the deployment folder and load it? Not really.The networking stack in Metro-style is intentionally "damaged" to prevent socket communication from Metro-style to any end-point on the local machine. (It just times out.) This militates against an approach where your Metro-style app can signal a properly installed service on the machine to create proxies on its behalf. If you wanted to do this, you'd have to route the calls through a C&C server somewhere. The reason why Microsoft has done this is obvious - taking out SRE know means they don't have to do it in an emergency later. The collateral damage in removing SRE is that you can't do mocking in test mode, but you also can't do any form of injection in production mode. There are plenty of reasons why enterprise apps might want to do this last point particularly. At CP, the assumption was that their inspection tools would prevent SRE being used as a malware vector - it now seems they are less confident about that. (For clarity, the risk here is in allowing a nefarious program to download instructions from a C&C server and make up executable code on the fly to run, getting around the marketplace restrictions.)So, two things:- System.Reflection.Emit is gone in Metro-style/WinRT. Get over it - dynamic, on-the-fly code generation is not going to to happen.- I've more or less got a version of Moq working in Metro-style.   I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04 x86 and I am trying to install the proprietary driver for my "Radeon HD 3200 Graphics" video card. I know that there are already many threads about this topic, but I did not find a solution for my problem: For the installation I followed exactly these instructions: What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers in 12.04 LTS? During the process I faced these problems: I executed ~$ debconf libstdc++6 dkms libqtgui4 wget execstack libelfg0 dh-modaliases and got: debconf: DbDriver "passwords" warning: could not open /var/cache/debconf/passwords.dat: Keine Berechtigung Can't exec "libstdc++6": Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden at /usr/share/perl/5.14/IPC/Open3.pm line 186. open2: exec of libstdc++6 dkms libqtgui4 wget execstack libelfg0 dh-modaliases failed at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/ConfModule.pm line 59 (translation of the German parts: "Keine Berechtigung" means: "no permission"; "Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden" means: "File or folder not found") Because I had no idea if it was a big issue, I just continued: ~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs There I got: Paketlisten werden gelesen... (Also there is not the possibility to enable these nice graphical features - the reason why I installed the proprietary driver) Because I worked with a completely fresh Installation I don't know how to fix the problem.   Yesterday at TechEd 2010 here in New Orleans I worked the front-booth, answering general SQL Server questions for the masses. I was actually a little surprised to find most of the questions I got were from folks that wanted to know more about Stream Insight and Master Data Services. In past conferences I've been asked a lot of "free consulting" questions, about problems folks have had from older products. I don't mind that a bit - in fact, I'm always happy to help in any way I can. But this time people are really interested in the new features in the product, and I like that they are thinking ahead, not just having to solve problems in production. My presentation was on "Database Design in an Hour". We had the usual fun, and SideShow Bob made an appearance - I kid you not. The guy in the back of the room looked just like Sideshow Bob, so I quickly held a "bes thair" contest, and he won. Duing the presentation, I explain the tools you can use to design databases. I also explain that the "Database Designer" tool in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) isn't truly a desinger - it uses non-standard notation, doesn't have a meta-data dictionary, and worst of all, it works at the physical level. In other words, whatever you do in SSMS will automatically change the field/table/relationship structures in the database. We fixed this in SSMS 2008 and higher by adding an option to block that, but the tool is not a good design function nonetheless. To be fair, no one I know of at Microsoft recommends that it is - but I was shocked to hear so many developers in the room defending it as a good tool. I think the main issue for someone who doesn't have to work with Relational Systems a great deal is that it can be difficult to figure out Foreign Keys. The syntax makes them look "backwards", so it's just easier to grab a field and place it on the table you want to point to. There are options. You can download a couple of free tools (CA has a community edition of ER-WIN, Quest has one, and Embarcadero also has one) and if you design more than one or two databases a year, it may be worth buying a true design tool. For years I used Visio, but we changed it so that it doesn't forward-engineer (create the DDL) any more, so it isn't a true design tool either. So investigate those free and not-so-free tools. You'll find they help you in your job - but stay away from the Database Designer in SSMS. Or I'll send Sideshow Bob over there to straighten you out. • XNA: Networking gone totally out of sync

  I'm creating a multiplayer interface for a game in 2D some of my friends made, and I'm stuck with a huge latency or sync problem. I started by adapting my game to the msdn xna network tutorial and right now when I join a SystemLink network session (1 host on PC and 1 client on Xbox) I can move two players, everything is ok, but few minutes later the two machines start being totally out of synchronization. When I move one player it takes 10 or 20 seconds (increasing with TIME) to take effect on the second machine. I've tried to : Create a thread which calls NetworkSession.Update() continuously as suggested on this forum, didn't worked. Call the Send() method one frame on 10, and the receive() method at each frame, didn't worked either. I've cleaned my code, flushed all buffers at each call and switched the host and client but the problem still remain... I hope you have a solution because I'm running out of ideas...
