• How to run RSA software fob on Ubuntu?

  I am using RSA software fob on windows. I want to use software fob on ubuntu. I didnot find any relevant software on RSA website for using software fob on ubuntu. I tried to use RSA firefox plugin but even that does not work properly. With firefox plugin I am not able to add my id file. The button doesnot work with my firefox version 3.6.3. Has anybody used RSA software fob on ubuntu? I have heard that it works with J2ME simulator but I dont want to use it for just for RSA.

  I have mirrored the ubuntu archive repository (I must say it's rather huge). Then, I can apt-get install with no problem, but it prompts with following warning: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! xxxx, xxxx, ... Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?

• Slow performance over network (Ubuntu)

  i did setup this NodeJs TCP Server and tested it with a message flooder. Just to see how the performance of the server is. While the message throughput is great if i run the server and the message flooder on the same computer (ubuntu), the throughput dramaticaly decreases if i start the server on computer1(ubuntu1) and the message flooder on computer2(also ubuntu). Both PC are on the same network. In fact, they are directly connected to each other. I started searching the internet for reasons and i suppose i need to tune TCP on both Ubuntu-pcs but until now i haven't been successfull at all. Has anyone experienced such problems, or could someone help me out? • A decent S3 bucket manager for Ubuntu

  I'm looking for a decent S3 bucket manager for Ubuntu (Gnome). I prefer it to integrate with Nautilus so it will look like just any other drive (a la WebDAV) but so far I haven't been able to find anything that I'd like to use on a daily basis. What bucket managers do you use for Ubuntu or what bucket manager would you recommend? UPDATE: S3FS seems to be what I'd really want to use since it lets me integrate my buckets directly into my file-system. However, when trying S3FS I do not get the impression that it's ready for prime time. I'm stunned by the fact that there are no decent bucket managers out there for Ubuntu/Gnome, guess I have to build it myself...

  I have installed Ubuntu Linux VM in my Win XP box. I am able to open http://google.com on Win XP but when I login to, ubuntu linux.. and launch this site: I am getting an error: Server not found. The network settings I have on LinuxUbuntu VM is : Adapter1 : attached to Bridge adapter. I tried NAT as well. But nothing seems to work. I am not in China. I provide google.com as mere example. We have a test website which cannot be launched inside Linux Ubuntu.

• losetup does not decrypt device in Ubuntu 11.4 as before

  I had an external volume mounted using losetup for about two years. It was created using Ubuntu 9.4 and I used the same Ubuntu installation throughout all dist upgrades. Now as I bought a new laptop I set up a fresh Ubuntu 11.4 installation on it. Problem is: losetup -e twofish /dev/loop0 /dev/sdb2 does not decrypt the volume anymore. The data in /dev/loop0 contains apparently random data. I am sure I entered the correct password. I modprobe'd cryptoloop and twofish. My question is: Has Canonical done some obscure changes to losetup like adding a salt? Does losetup depend on configuration files I did not know about? How can I decrypt the volume on my now laptop?

• Install latest kernel to Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel

  I have an installed Ubuntu Distro (Karmic 9.10) already. However, due to some problems with xorg ati driver, I cannot standby my computer. Some guy have suggested me to try the latest version of xorg driver which in turn requires a newer version of Linux kernel than the newest release available from Ubuntu Central Repository (2.6.33). I have searched though several articles on how to install a custom Linux kernel. However, these articles are so 2004/2005 and they were talking about lilo (???). Since then, I'm afraid that I cannot make the Grub Boot recognize the new Linux kernel properly (I'm just a newbie to Linux). I would love to know how to install the kernel into Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel.

• Can't run Ubuntu from disc

  When I place the boot CD in my CD drive and boot from it, I get the Ubuntu menu. I have these options Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer Install Ubuntu Check disc for defects Test memory Boot from first hard disk I can use the cursor keys to select them, and I can push F1 for help etc. However, I can not select an option. I've highlighted the first and tried enter, space bar etc. I do have a KVM, so I plugged in a 2nd USB keyboard and tried it but no go either. I can push escape and then got to the prompt. Am I doing something wrong?

I never had to use this format before. I went on ubuntu fourm they told me to use vlc media. I am using vlc media. mplayer, it still have error with that, sounds and video. • VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

  We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!

  I'm using kvm and I would like to run ubuntu server on it. My goal is to run db2 database instance for development. Is there ready to use ubuntu qcow2 images online for such purpose? Or should I install it from live cd? I've found this instruction UEC/Images, but at launch I get: $ kvm -fda ${floppy} -drive if=virtio,file=./disk.img -boot a ... Nothing to boot: No such file or directory (http://ipxe.org/...) No more network devices No bootable device. Solution: I havent found pre-installed ubuntu virtual machine image online, so solution is to install it by your self.

• Dual boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu?

  I've installed Windows 8 on a machine (lenovo x220 laptop) with Ubuntu 12.10 already installed on another disk. I am guessing that Windows 8 has convinced the laptop to switch to UEFI boot (rather than the BIOS boot that was there previously) as the Lenovo splash screen on startup now no longer has the options to interrupt the boot process (e.g. to choose the boot drive). Previously I had Windows 8 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other drive, so could choose my OS through the BIOS rather than through grub or other bootloader but now no longer have that option. How can I get back the option to boot Ubuntu? I would sort of prefer UEFI boot as it seems much faster than BIOS.

• Ubuntu: Alternative task-switcher to what is provided in compiz

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and really enjoying it. The task switcher default in Ubuntu shows a list of small icons for each running app much like the windows task switcher. It's fast and effective. I enabled Compiz and noticed that the task switcher changed to one with small thumbnails showing a smaller version of each window. Nice, but it slows the task manager down to about 0.5 seconds to display, which for me is far too long. Have googled the forums and it's a very common problem with ubuntu/compiz. I want to run compiz as it provides so many other features, but the slow task switcher is just not going to run with me. So was wondering if there is some way of NOT letting compiz override the task switcher, or, if there is some other task switcher that I can install which will not be slow like the compiz one. Any help would be appreciated.

  Hi, I have/(had) windows xp on one partition of my hdd. on second i installed ubuntu 9.10 yesterday. and after reboot of windows xp i get error "GRUB LOADING.". now i know that you can play around with that using live GRUB and all. putting GRUB on top of MBR or etc etc. something like that. i want to know - if i reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 which is available now - will it give me still the same error? or i will be able to use both OS? (i.e. is that problem solved in version 10.04 or still there? and if it is solved reinstallation of ubuntu will solve the problem or not?) anyhelp is welcome. Thanks

• Help with putting Ubuntu on an old laptop

  Hi I dusted off an old laptop from 2004 which has Windows XP. I want to put Ubuntu on it. So, I downloaded the CD image and then burnt it to a disc. I tried starting the laptop and booting from CD but no luck. The CD drive doesn't work in the laptop anymore! So I shared the files on the local server and then accessed the wubi.exe file from within Windows XP, and it proceeded to download something else and install. It then asked me to restart, which I did. I now have a folder C:\ubuntu with a bunch of files in it. How do I get the option to boot to Ubuntu? Sorry, I have never installed a Linux variant before!   I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop with only 756 MB of RAM, Pentium M 1.6 processor. I'm using Google Chrome 11.0 (dev channel) for web browsing, and it appears to be using up most of my memory and processor time. Does anyone know of a better browser than Chrome on Ubuntu, for an older computer like mine? I'm new to Ubuntu, so there may also be tweaks I can make to my existing system to have it perform better. • Ubuntu dual boot and grub error 18

  I've attempted to install 9.04 on an older toshiba laptop with a new 300GB drive and am getting the dreaded Grub error 18 that indicates that grub is looking beyond the bios readable area of the HD and failing. I just let ubuntu roll with its default selections when installing and ended up with this: Drive layout /dev/sda1 -ntfs 128GB -boot /dev/sda2 -extended 170GB -lba /dev/sda5 -ntfs 167.59GB /dev/sda6 -ext3 2.33GB /dev/sda7 -linux-swap 172MB I'd like make the system dual bootable without having to reinstall windows (real pain since I would have to go through an obstructionist IT dept). I know I can make windows bootable with a rescue disk and fixmbr but is there something I can do to make it dual bootable using the ubuntu livecd? Alternately, what should I have done at the partition stage of ubuntu installation to avoid this?

• Ubuntu firefox: some web-pages stuck on loading

  Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 beta, installation went fine and all programs are working smooth. Just this one weird network problem. Some sites simply are not opening and loading forever. For example, google.com and youtube are working well, but ubuntu.com and many other are not opening at all, or are loaded partly. One thing i noticed is that on all of those pages on firefox status bar is message "Looking up for www.google-analytics.com" (or similar remote resources) message appearing all the time (even on this page, but it somehow has loaded and working). I should mention that i tried those pages to open on windows OS on this same machine, and they opened without problems. So i am guessing that it has to be some sort of network configuration problems on Ubuntu. What could cause such problem?

• VMware 1.0.1 Windows7 - Ubuntu hostnames

  I'm trying to run Ubuntu as the guest OS using VMWware 1.0.10 with Windows 7 Ultimate as the host OS. I had this set up previously with Win XP as the host OS and in fact I'm using the same .vmx My problem is I can't get either Win7 or Ubuntu to be able to ping the other by hostname. After installing Samba and Winbind on Ubuntu, I was able to get this working when under WinXP, but for some reason I can't get it to work under Win7. I can ping by IP Address, and the guest OS even shows up by hostname under the Windows networking panel (but of course I can't do anything with it), but pinging using short hostnames just won't work. Also, Win7 firewall is turned off completely.

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors? • Poor CPU usage under Ubuntu

  Hello, I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 and I am now experiencing a strange problem. My computer has a quad-core processor, and when I am running several processes simultaneously, none of the cores is fully used. Before the upgrade, when I was running 4 processes, each of them was using 100% CPU (I could see that with the 'top' command). But now, CPU usage oscillates and is always pretty low. • Unusable Source for Ubuntu image on Xen 3

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a new VM in Xen 3, running Ubuntu 10.4 (32 bit) as the guest OS. Xen 3 is installed on a machine running OpenSuse 11.2. I downloaded the Ubuntu image from the ubuntu.com website and I mounted it on /dev/loop0. When I try to create the new VM in Xen with the given source, Xen complains the "source is unusable". I've also checked the md5 sum for the image. It's fine. Any suggestion or hint that could help me?
