• how to detect device type from connected device to router?

  i have a att router and there is an unknown device connected to my network. i cant seem to kick it off because of how att's router settings are created which is kind of dumb. i am able to see its local ip and mac address. i am on a mac with snow leopard. how can i get more information on the device with the information that i have? i want to see what kind of device it is, i have checked all deviced that are connected to the router and non seem to match the local ip that is connected. i have wpa encryption setup with a strong password.

• How to troubleshoot problems sharing internet connection via WiFi on Mac OS X

  I'm at a hotel, plugged into their network via ethernet on my MacBook. I want to share the connection via wifi to two other computers. I went to Prefs Sharing and set up internet sharing. I know it's working because my friend with a Mac access the net fine. My friend with the PC can see the network, but can't connect to it. In the sharing prefs, airport options, I chose these options: Channel: Automatic Enable encryption: yes WEP Key length 40-bit password length: 5 chars (as specified in the instructional text) Update: I tried it with encryption turned off, and it works. Of course, I'd rather not do that... Any ideas?

• Wi-fi signal with keeping the internet cable

  So the situation is that I have Ethernet cable which provides internet to my computer. Thing I want is to have wi-fi connection in my house and Ethernet cable (like I have before) to use for my PC. I will use wi-fi for my laptop and mobile phone. I think I need router for that and I'm looking at Asus RT-N16 (suggested in Coding Horror) for it, but I am not sure. Is it the right thing for me and I will be able to get wi-fi signal and keep the Ethernet cable? I guess the system will be that current cable goes into router, router provides wi-fi signal and gives back new cable... or something like that. Thanks in any advice!   I have an Ethernet connection that requires 802.1x authentication (TTLS, MSCHAPv2, name+password). My goal is to connect that to something that would then act as an WiFi AP, so I can use the connection on more devices (iPhone, notebook, etc.) Would it be possible/good idea to use Raspberry Pi for this purpose? Or are there better-suited devices to do this? EDIT: found some alternatives but because of low rep can't post more than two links... OpenWRT + wpa_supplicant guide Carambola - works with OpenWRT (but probably not standalone?) Hornet-UB - works with OpenWRT Asus RT-N10+ + OpenWRT how-to EDIT 2: probably going to try TP-LINK TL-WR740N. It's a classic router, but can be flashed with OpenWRT, and the price beats everything else I've seen.

  scenario of wifi : i'm using wifi in hostel which having cyberoam firewall and all the computer which uses that access point. that access point have following configuration default gateway : 192.168.100.1 primary dns server : 192.168.100.1 here, when i try to open a website the cyberoam firewall redirects the page to a login page (with correct login information, we can browse internet else not), and also website access and bandwidth limitations. once i've heard about pd-proxy which finds open port and tunnels through a port ( usually udp 53). using pd-proxy with UDP 53 port, i can browse internet without login, even bandwidth limit is bypassed !!! and another software called openvpn with connecting openvpn server through udp port 53 i can browse internet without even login into the cyberoam. both of softwares uses port 53, specially openvpn with port 53, now i've a VPS server in which i can install openvpn server and connect through the VPS server to browse internet. i know why that is happening because with pinging on some website(eb. google.com) it returns it's ip address that means it allows dns queries without login. but the problem is there is already DNS service is running on the VPS server on port 53. and i can only use 53 port to bypass the limitations as i think. and i can not run openvpn service on my VPS server on port 53. so how to scan the wifi for vulnerable ports like 53 so that i can figure out the magic port and start a openvpn service on VPS on the same port. ( i want to scan similar vulnerable ports like 53 on cyberoam in which the traffic can be tunneled, not want to scan services running on ports). improvement of the question with retags and edits are always welcomed... NOTE : all these are for Educational purpose only, i'm curious about network related knowledge.....

• Realtek "Microphone Effects" no longer working

  I have a mic plugged into my computer, and I was able to use the "microphone effects" tab here to enable/disable noise suppression and acoustic echo cancellation. Noise suppression off and acoustic echo cancellation on were the most recent settings I had on before the problem occurred. I disabled my mic in the windows 7 "recording devices" tab, then re-enabled it. When it came back, these options were grayed out, and remained so even after a reboot. I am not sure why this is or how to fix it, all other options are still the same (Settings are identical to when it was working). Any ideas whats wrong or how to fix it? edit: can't post image due to being new.

• Netgear genie says my Internet is off, while Windows claims I am connected

  I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? Is "netgear genie" the problem ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access.

  I was trying to play the game Warzone 2100 and the games runs fine, with nice speed, but the screen stays with a horizontal lines "flickering"... My PC have a integrated GeForce Go 6100 vga. • No internet on some devices, still on WiFi

  Ok, here's the situation. I live with 3 friends, and we often sit in the living room with laptops out. There's a WiFi router in the kitchen, and we have quite a stable connection. The issue, however, is this: sometimes, all of a sudden one of my friends loses internet connection. Even disconnecting/reconnecting to the WiFi network does not help. When we restart the router, though, it works like a charm again. The odd thing is, it happens just for this one Windows 7 laptop. We've switched routers (for a different reason) in the mean time, but the issue remained. This makes me suspect the laptop even more. I realise I've given little details, but I don't really know what to try/do. Any suggestions what it might be?

She claims that she didn't have any issues for months with everything working together, and suddenly everything stopped disconnecting. • Windows doesn't get access to internet though linux easily does

  We have a very interesting problem. The network is configured in this way: internet is connected to Trendnet switch TS DHCP server at 192.168.0.1 running on Ubuntu (S) is connected to internet switch DNS is also configured on 192.168.0.1 on S D-Link Wi-Fi boosters are connected to switch TS PCs use D-Link PCI-E Wi-Fi cards to get access to network PCs have both Ubuntu and Windows 7 There are about 40 PCs. When PC is booted to Ubuntu it easily gets access to internet. But when it's booted to Windows 7, it gets a valid IP-address, but doesn't get access to internet. The address, mask, DNS, GW-address are totally the same as when it's booted under Ubuntu. The S is reacheble and pingable. Sometimes when we are lucky the PC gets access to Internet, but after rebooting it can lose it. When PC under Windows has access, it has totally the same settings as when it doesn't. What can be done? UPDATE I shared a dropbox with 2 captures of traffic. Ping.pcap is a capture of pinging 8.8.8.8. And google-browser.pcap is a capture of opening a google.com in a browser, both of them are in tcpdump formats and made by Wireshark on Win PC. The MAC of Win PC ends on b7:63 and IP is 192.168.0.130. • PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

• Looking for a router with multiple WAN ports and load balancing

  I'm going to be moving in a few months. The location I'm moving to is great except it's on a road with very few people, so the internet access option is limited to DSL at 1.6Mbps down, 384kbps up. This is much slower than I'm used to. One option is to get at least two of the DSL lines. There's also good possibility that I'll be able to get WiMax or similar. I've been looking around a bit and it seems like what I need is a load balancing router with multiple WAN ports. Can anyone recommend some good ones? I could also go with a small power efficient Linux box with multiple NICs. What would be good software for that? It'd need to be able to handle around 10Mbps. Thanks for any help

• Wifi Works with Android and Windows 8 but not Linux and Win 7

  Support has told me that our company wide wifi network is setup to support mobile phones only. However it doesn't make sense to me that they can identify a mobile device rather they have setup the Access Point to use a protocol that is only supported on Android and Windows phones. Because the Access Point supports Windows mobile this means that laptops running Windows 8 can also connect to the Access Point (proven). So it stands to reason that since Android is based on Linux there must be a way to connect using Linux as well. iwlist shows IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : TKIP CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : 802.1x WIreshark seems to show that a connection is being made to a website to get a certificate and use a Domain Controller for authentication. Questions: 1) what protocol could they be using that is supported on Win Mobile and Android but not on Win 7 and Linux (Debian) ? 2) what tools can I use to help me discover what protocol i need to support ? I have used iwlist and wireshark but I was not able to glean to much useful information from them. I can post the results if needed. 3) is there an app i can use on my Android phone to help me understand what kind of network it is connecting to ? I can provide more information if you tell me how to get it. I just don't know what I am looking for.

• How to toggle wifi / bluetooth in Macbook Air with Windows 7 installed

  I'm writing this on a MacBook Air 13" (the ones just released), but I have a problem. BootCamp provides no easy way of turning off the bluetooth or wifi radios, and nor are there any hotkey combinations on the keyboard, nor any hard or soft switches on the body to toggle these radios. As I'll be travelling a lot with this machine, what's the best way for me to comply with the cabin service crews' instructions and disable the radios before takeoff, and reenable them after landing?
